As a site built in homage to our culture’s storytellers, theGrio’s literary coverage is not only intended to highlight the work, process, and themes of Black wordsmiths but preserve and elevate our place as truth-tellers who have always ensured the word is passed. Writing Black centers this focus by magnifying writers across genres—literature, poetry, journalism, playwriting, songwriting, and more—to discuss the intersection of identity, culture, and craft. Each week, Maiysha Kai talks with Black storytellers across the diaspora, speaking candidly about process, popular culture, publishing, and how race inherently inspires and informs their work. Writing Black is more than a literary podcast; it’s an exploration of storytelling as both a Black tradition and a cultural necessity.
