Devin recently was on Wheel of Fortune! So he's a local celebrity now! Devin was born and raised in Halifax. He has 15 years experience in summer camps, which helps him with his current endeavor. Building Buddies is a Lego building club that Devin started.
He left Halifax, but came back, noting that "the best medicine for anything is being back home."
He loves the supportive community that the Halifax are provides.
His goals for Building Buddies is to expand to adults and families, and introduce a "Sip and Click" program.
Alyssa asks Devin what it's like to be a role model and Devin explains that his biggest lesson he learned about starting a business is that you can't do it yourself.
Devin's end goal is to have Building Buddies become a franchise.

He's been in South Boston since 1986, when he started in the propane and fuel business. He's done a lot in his life, like teaching community college and overseeing 105 people on his team. On episode 20 we are joined by Denise Barksdale, assistant manager for the town of Halifax. Denise is a Halifax County transplant and has been with the town of Halifax for 14 years.
She describes her job as "fun, challenging, and never a dull moment." Her leadership style is open to change, teaching and learning. She describes herself as easy to get along with and always open to suggestions.
Denise describes a day in her life, talks about her current goals and shares her career advice. "Always do your best," and "it pays to listen."

On today's episode we are joined by Amy Huskin, Halifax County Public School Superintendent. Amy always knew she wanted to be a teacher. 30 years later, she is still serving kids. Amy makes it known that she is always down for a challenge and was super excited to accept this new leadership role as superintendent. Amy states that she is "all about learning, observing and seeing what is working." Her advice for those in leadership roles is to "put really good people in place and let them do their job," and to "stop talking about it and be about it." Amy notes that being in the teaching world is the hardest job ever, but is also the best job ever. Her life lesson to those listening is to always "stay in the truth." To wrap up this episode, Alyssa asks what Amy's life motto is. Her response; "when you know better, you do better."
Today, Alyssa has the pleasure of speaking to Petrina Carter, the President and CEO of Tri-County Community Action. Tri-County Community Action gives ample resources to those in need in the community. Petrina holds both a Bachelors and Masters degree (training and development) and wanted to work in social services so badly that she interviewed three times until she was offered the position. (Now that's persistence!) Petrina describes her leadership style as engaging, and puts emphasis on the fact that she needs the help and perspective of others to be able to do her job. Her advice for the younger population just graduating and starting out: "Relax, and don't be a passenger in your life."
On this episode of the Rogers Radio Podcast we are joined by 9 year-old Frankie Martinez. Frankie is an up and coming business man. He started Frankie's Spicy Farm by accident. Frankie suffers from seizures and while in the hospital he ordered some fries and ketchup. His dad forgot the ketchup and gave him hot sauce instead! He ended up loving it and wanted to make his own version; and that was the catalyst for Frankie's Spicy Farm! Frankie and his mom make the hot sauce out of their kitchen and sell it at their local Farmers Market. His advice for people getting started in business is "once you start, try to keep going, you'll eventually be successful." Tracy Quackenbush Martin didn't always want to pursue law. In fact, she originally wanted to be a veterinarian. She quickly realized that pursuing animals would distance herself from people, something she did not want to do.
Tracy Quackenbush Martin attended law school at Washington and Lee University School of Law. She enjoys the small town feel of Halifax County. She didn't always enjoy being noticed, but says that is what makes Halifax County so great. Everyone knowing everyone and willing to help is what makes Halifax county so great.
Her advice is "whatever you do, be the best, decide to have a positive impact and you cannot please everyone (trust me, I've tried)."
On this episode we are joined by Stanley Jeffress of Jeffress Funeral home. Stanley came to South Boston in 1980. He has an associates in Mortuary Science and went to BCU where he pursued business. He grew up in the funeral home business and always wanted to run a business, but never thought it would be a funeral home. He is semi-retired and would like to travel to all 50 states!
His advice for first time business owners is "you need to be prepared, do your homework, and be thorough."
His motto is to be yourself and when asked who he would love to have dinner with if he could pick anyone, Stanley said The President but specifically Barack Obama.
Welcome to our 10th episode! Double digits! Jamie Lynn Lindley is our Office Coordinator here at Rogers and Dolly Parton Super Fan. She has a background in HR and leadership and she got married not that long ago. Jamie Lynn has always wanted to give back to her community, so she joined Rogers.
She loves all the training opportunities she is given and describes working with Rogers as "controlled chaos."
As Office Coordinator, Jamie Lynn Lindley is in charge of the call center, the CSR's and the dispatchers. Her goal in this role is to become the Chief People Officer of Rogers.
Her advice for all those listening? "Not knowing means you're learning, in order to get better and be better, you have to help and invest in others, and take each day as it comes."
On this episode we are joined by Ryan Garrett of Edward Jones in South Boston. Ryan has a background in sports and farming and in this episode, he explains how he came to be a financial advisor and how it was always something he wanted to do. (even if he had to sell baby shoes first.)

Very recently Dale was promoted to Service Coordinator (yay Dale!) He is appreciative of this new opportunity and is excited to lead. When asked about advice he would give Dale said, "Be a sponge, work hard, and be honest!"

Dr. Betty Adams says she always has had a good mind for business. She attended East Carolina University where she received her MBA.
She describes her leadership style as "transformational." She believes that it is important to have a good work ethic and never give up. She wraps up this episode by saying, "take risks and fail if necessary, set the example and chase what brings you joy."
