Happy Labor Day!
Sorry for this bleak reminder but, we’re going back to The Office. Turn in your WFH laptops and get a new ID card. This week we’re clocking in at Dunder Mifflin for our shift on the sales desk.
From the mind of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant comes an American re-imagining by now comedy power writer Greg Daniels. Admire the documentary film style that has its claws so deep in Hollywood studios you can hardly make a comedy show in a different style. We get a nobody-turned-somebody cast led by Steve Carrell and future stars John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, BJ Novak, Oscar Nunez, Leslie David Baker, Angela Kinsey, Brian Baumgartner, Phyllis Smith, and Melora Hardin.

Welcome to the Pitt! A phrase probably no one wants to hear outside of this context. Join us as we strap to the gurney and wheel into arguably one of the most chaotic shows of all time. From the mind of ER and JAG alum R. Scott Gemmill, The Pitt takes us to a mid city hospital run by ER star Noah Wale, Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa and so many more terrific actors.
What drives the fervor of the Pitt fandom seems to be the realistic stakes and nature of the ER, combined with the linear time of the entire season taking place on one shift. So who better to talk to than Friend of the Pod Dr. Raul Flores as our official Chief Medical Examiner. Pull up a chair, we have a very busy day in Pittsburgh.

We have a saying here on the island: “leave us a 5-star review!”
Aloha friends! This week we’re taking you to the island of O’ahu for some prime-time soap TV to compliment the Fox smash hit The OC. Does it work? Well… try finding the pilot anywhere other than YouTube and let us know what you think.
Jason Matthews (Kristoffer Polaha) runs the Grand Waimea Hotel and Resort in this prime-time soap. Arriving to shake things up is his ex, Nicole Booth (Brooke Burns), who takes a job as the resort's director of guest relations. Resort owner Vincent Colville (James Remar) keeps an eye on his employees (Jason Momoa and Amanda Righetti) to make sure their past history doesn't affect their work.

Obviously we’re talking about the Netflix Original series The Umbrella Academy!
Starring Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher as kids born under extremely mysterious circumstances who developed super powers as they aged. Inspired by the 2006 movie Stick It, MIOBI is the brainchild of showrunner Holly Sorensen who wanted to make a drama centering around “The Rock” training center in Colorado. The show features actors Josie Loren, Ayla Kell, and Cassie Scerbo as the big three gymnasts setting their sights on the gold medal, while newcomer Emily Kmetko represents an unforeseen threat to those dreams. Can they gel as a team or will it tear them apart?

While you can probably take a wild guess that Max, Geoff, and Rich are all big fans and that they will just gush over this show. There are a lot of things to unpack. With tremendous cast and writing comes a complicated legacy and bizarre network choices that make this show rise to peak fandom on uncertain ground. While it’s easy to look back on this truly A++ cast and say “duh of course this is a hit” this show took a lot of chances and was the launching pad of some massive careers. Donald Glover, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Joel McHale, John Oliver, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Audi, Jim Rash, Dan Harmon, and Chevy Chase… hard to imagine all those big names together at once now.

This week on TVPL the Pilots discuss the TV show 'You'. Not “you” per se, but maybe all of “us?” Like categorically “you” could be “me?” No, not “you” specifically, “you” in the sense of really anyone, the royal “you?” No, that’s not the right “you.” Actually maybe it’s not “you” like “us” maybe it’s just “you” as the seasonal hyperfixation of “you”. Third base.
Anywho, they cover everything from the show's origin and creators Sara Gamble and Greg Berlanti, the portrayal of the main character Joe Goldberg by Penn Badgley, the stylistic choice of internal dialogue, and the unsettling and charming nature of the show. Joe's manipulation tactics, some outdoor activities and the expert camera work in the show. It's the End of Year Spectacular! Thank you all for staying with us as we watched more TV than we did during lockdown.
While we objectively LOVED every show we covered this year, unfortunately there were some shows that came out in 2023 that weren't up to snuff! Can you believe it?? BAD television??
Well it's true, and the guys watched three shows that sadly will not see the bright lights of 2024! Geoff and Max got bit by the IP bug choosing to do the TV show versions of National Treasure and Grease, with Disney+'s 'The Edge of History' and 'Rise of the Pink Ladies' respectively. Rich went the route of the frenzied social media critic and chose a chaotic pick of HBO's 'The Idol' starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp.

Wow, looking back on this episode from way back in July, we were so different then. So young, so naive, so nervous about doing this narrative focused podcast only about cartoons and reality TV. Well anywho, here's our episode about the pilot of Scandal. We're talking about the episode that launched 1,000 binges. Scandal is our next foray into the Shonda Rhimes universe and who better to lead us there than our Ambassador to Shondaland Korama Danquah (check her out on our Grey's Anatomy and Glee Episodes!)
So come with us and get your Olivia Pope power suit on, it's time for Scandal!

This week the TV Pilots are joined by the hilarious Gianmarco Soresi (Netflix, Comedy Central, Seeso even!) to discuss CW’s insane Archie universe murder mystery sex romp. We talk about turning Sunday morning cartoons into gritty TV shows, the legitimate theater, and why the entire town of Riverdale is so horny!!
We also tackle the subjects you’ve been curious about like if implied twincest is ever okay in TV, psychotically-timed lesbian kisses and high schoolers with 2% body fat. Come aboard and buckle up it for this slightly uncomfortable, horny, tongue-in-butt-cheek ride from Greg Berlanti.

Hey everybody! Brendan is back!!
clears throat
A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the federation in
To maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar-Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the Queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy
Oh my, my this here Anakin guy
Maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
He left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye

Set course for romance, our all-new episode has something for everyone! We're talking about the 70's classic "The Love Boat" on a special cruise ship-sized edition of TV Pilot's License! It wouldn't be "The Love Boat" without a special guest, and we're thrilled to welcome comedian, musician, and real-life former cruise employee Zach Pyke ("All Bassists Are Cool," "The Bachelor Zone") to help us recap.
Grab yourself a tropical drink and a seat by the pool as Zach recounts his tales from the high seas, Max & Geoff geek out about 70's tv stars, and Rich asks a very important question the week.

The midterm elections are days away, and we've decided to contribute to democracy the only way we know how: by looking back on a sitcom that lasted a mere 13 episodes! Unlike their ballots, the pilots didn't mail this one in. We'll be discussing fire safety, US trade policy (really), presidents playing sports and more! What happens when a Broadway star, an Obama administration speechwriter, and one of the hottest directors in tv get together? Will this pod save America? Are people prepared to imagine a world where Bill Pullman plays the president...again?! We analyzed our tv screens as intently as Steve Kornacki, and we're bringing the results to you!
