Ep85 – Recently, I started feeling off but couldn’t pinpoint why. Within a short period of time, I was experiencing anxiety attacks and knew I had to call the doctor. After consulting with my regular doctor, naturopath and therapist, I’m starting to feel better, but it’s made me question how much I’ve been doing. After taking time to reassess, I’ve realized I need to cut way back. I feel my mission is too important to completely take the summer off, so, instead, I’m scaling back my efforts to 20%. In this process, I’ve decided to rebuild that 20% from scratch.

I know I’m not alone because so many artists have shared with me that they are overwhelmed or burnt out. Just like me, they can’t keep up their current pace. Something has to change. So, part of that 20% is determining how to help this amazing community of artists. What I’ve been teaching for the past several years is incredibly valuable, and I don’t want to give it up, so I’ve been working on a simplified version that not only teaches you how to have a distinctive voice but how to simplify your own art career and revive your spark.

Listen in to learn more about my upcoming workshop series and why you don’t want to miss it!

However, Agnes is trying to have a stronger online presence and is looking to bridge the significant gap between her online sales and her in-person events.

She knows social media can be a useful tool for artists, but she struggles to allow herself to be vulnerable with her audience after a difficult online experience.

Ep83 – Jessica Singerman is a multidisciplinary artist and an outdoor athlete whose work is highly informed by the time she spends outdoors. Her work is all about connecting with people in that slower space and taking responsibility for the changes in the environment.

Two years ago, Jessica took a full-time teaching position in the school of film at a local university, a change that greatly impacted her art business. While she loved her teaching job, the additional income lessened the pressure to sell her work, and that lack of pressure had a two-faceted effect. On the one hand, the amount of work Jessica sold was greatly reduced, and that meant that her studio was filling up with unsold pieces. On the other hand, she was able to give herself some grace creatively, exploring different media and techniques she had always wanted to try. The latter allowed her to hone skills that improved her practice.

Overall, the last two years have been a positive experience for Jessica, but she’s ready to get back to selling more of her work. Her biggest problem seems to be generating leads. She knows how to move forward with the sale once someone expresses interest, but she’s considering hiring someone to help get her to that point.

Listen in as we talk through a strategy that will help Jessica get back to selling more work.

Ep82 – Robyn Ready Voth is a portrait painter who captures the milestone events of life in heirloom paintings. She has seen many changes in her art down through the years, and due to her diligence as a student, she regularly takes her art to a new level. As Robyn’s knowledge of art has grown, so has her understanding of why she creates, revealing the reasons behind her work as the years have passed.

Robyn learned that before she could connect with others, she had to learn to connect with herself. She did so through meditation, which also allowed her to define the mission that she desires to serve. Robyn loves connecting one on one with people and strives to encourage and help them find their place, adding value to their lives by defining what is most important to them. This led Robyn to create heirloom paintings. Her paintings capture the defining and pivotal events in life that are important to save for future generations.

At this point in her master’s program, Robyn is trying to define her plan, not only for her artmaking but for herself as well. She is currently looking for an execution partner, or accountability partner to hold her to her goals. However, finding the right person is proving to be tricky due to scheduling conflicts.

Listen in as we talk through the value of introspection, building our energy and holding ourselves accountable while I give Robyn some actionable tips on following through with her plan.

Inge Flinte is an abstract artist currently living in Australia. Inge has been painting seriously for about 8 years now, but it wasn’t until just a few years ago that her career in fine art took off. She gave some work to a friend's gallery just to get it out of the house, and to her surprise her originals began selling so fast she had a hard time keeping up with the demand. Prior to this experience, Inge never thought it was possible to create an income around her art, and it took someone else believing in her for Inge to begin believing in herself. Her art business continued to grow as she had fun acting on her ideas and seeing where they would take her.

Over the past couple of years Inge has seen a lot of change, to include moving continents twice and uncertainty with her husband’s job along with the normal change that occurs as life happens. She managed to adapt but not without making changes in her business as well. When she became concerned that selling her original art wouldn’t bring in the income she needed, Inge decided it was time to create a few new streams of income.

Listen in to hear more about how Inge adapted and the pivots she has made in her art business.

When Emiko Venlet started out, she spent a lot of time trying to do what other painters were doing by mimicking their style and the actions they were taking. Instead of creating an identity and a painting style of her own that would sell, Emiko realized she had lost herself in the process.

Focusing on positivity and exploring her own likes helped Emiko become more confident in her art and develop a style all her own. She then used the marketing skills she was learning and a little courage to connect with others about her art. As a result, Emiko went from bringing in $0 to $1500 a month and more!

For the first eight years of Deeann Rieves’ career as a fine artist, she felt as though she was flying by the seat of her pants without much of a plan.

That all changed at the beginning of 2020 when Deeann determined that “intention” would be her word for the year. She mapped out the entire year, planning the collections she wanted to create as well as the details of her releases. Obviously, some adjustments had to be made due to Covid, but she was actually able to stick to the plan she created. Deeann credits the growth of her business to that intention.

Kayla Gale is an oil painter and a mother of two from the Canadian prairies of Saskatchewan. Kayla started painting about eight years ago, and for the last five years she has grown her art business into a full-time income. When she is not painting, she is homeschooling and spending time with her beautiful children.

Kayla has a free-spirit outlook, preferring not to make specific goals but simply following what feels like a natural progression with her art business. She is passionate about her work and creating art that will become a part of her buyers’ lives. Witnessing a buyer make a deep connection with one of her paintings really lights her up. However, finding those buyers through marketing makes her feel very uncomfortable.

Lately, Kayla has considered taking her business in a different direction, working with designers and tradespeople. She hopes this will lead to more opportunities to create larger pieces and find the perfect home for each of them while avoiding the icky feeling that selling gives her.

Listen in as I teach Kayla how to reframe marketing her art and see that selling and marketing are both about connecting.

Have you ever experienced love at first sight? I think we all have. It doesn’t have to be a romantic love, just a connection that is instantly made with another person. Love at first sight is when you see someone across the room and your first instinct is to say, “Yes, you’re my people!”

That’s what your ideal art buyer is. They’re someone that you make a connection with, someone that feels like your people. They might be someone who buys art from you, but, more importantly, they’re someone who helps you grow.

Ideal art buyers are just one of four different types of people that you need to build relationships with in your business. Putting effort into building these relationships helps your business grow faster, better and stronger.

In today’s episode I share some ways that you can learn how to identify the four types of people you need to be building relationships with, so listen in!

Are you determined to make change happen in the New Year?

Are you willing to set aside what you know and love and step outside of your comfort zone in search of more?

So much of the messaging out there today says to be happy with what you have. Be thankful and grateful. And we should all be thankful for what we have, but I believe we are all meant for more.

However, not everyone will achieve it. It’s reserved for those who really want it and are willing to go after it, no matter how many obstacles they face along the way.

This is how I want to inspire artists to live their lives.

I don’t want you to settle for the good or even the great. My desire is to help you realize your destiny, learn all you need to know and experience everything you’ve ever dreamed of.

There will be some bumps along the way, but if you keep moving forward, you’ll get there. Don’t forget to be willing to recognize signs of encouragement that are set before you on your journey.

I truly believe if you work hard to make your dreams come true, those dreams will become your reality!

How do you know what activities to be doing in your business to create revenue now?

First, It depends on where you are in your business. Maybe you have a great strategy for building consistent income in the long term, but at times you struggle to fill the gap, to bring in money in between launches. On the other hand, maybe you have yet to figure out how to make $1,000 to $1,500 a month, every month, and you’re doubting that it’s even possible.

If you’ve been in the art business very long, you know that your time is limited, but how do you know the wisest way to spend that time? There are several projects you can spend time on that won’t bring in money today, tomorrow, this week or even this month, but they will lead to revenue in the long run. I call those consistent income activities. Then there are actions you can take that have the possibility of putting money in your pocket today, and I call them money now activities.

These two types of activities, those that will create consistent income and those that will bring in money now, actually work together beautifully. You can combine them to create a steady stream of revenue.

Listen in to learn how to determine which one you need to be spending your time on today!

Do any of these statements describe you: you have no idea what you're doing, you're worried about what other people think, or you feel as though you’re in over your head.

Congratulations! Experiencing these feelings means you’ve reached the next level.

Believe it or not, these feelings are a sign of growth. It means you’re willing to go bigger, take up space, follow your inspiration and do things your way.  You’re no longer in a place where you're so comfortable you can do everything on autopilot. And let’s face it, if you’re staying in that spot, it means you’re not growing anyway.

Yes, you have to learn new skills, new mindsets, and new tricks of the trade to survive, but that’s a good thing! It’s a clear indication you’re on the path to getting what you want.
