Your church's "brand" is all about what your church believes, thinks, acts, and does. Although we as churches don't use the word "brand" and instead use words like "mission" and "vision," our churches have reputations in our community. That reputation often stems from what our members believe about the church and then how those members live out their daily lives.

To finish up our conversation around churches and branding, I break down how to take all the work we've done over the last 3 weeks and bring it into every aspect of our church's life.

The terms a "branded house" and a "house of brands" are used by marketers to describe the type of strategy a company will use when they are wanting to grow their reach. What is a branded house and a house of brands? Here is a quick definition for each:

Branded House: A company that uses the same logo mark and brand name but adds in the department or service to the company name.

House of Brands: A company that owns many other companies but each company is it's own standalone brand and has it's own brand assets.

So what do these terms have to do with your small church? That's what this episode is all about.

Although your church is plenty more than your logo, people from the outside instantly judge, categorized, and determine if they connect with your church just by your church's logo! So although the logo isn't the only thing that we need to worry about, it's an essential piece of our church's brand.

In this episode, we talk about the 3 truths of logos and then uncover 3 lies, all with the end goal of asking the question, "so should we stress about our church's logo so much?"

Simply put, a brand is how a company visually and verbally presents itself to the world. A brand consists of logos, color pallets, verbiage, and mission statements all with the goal of telling people their "why" they exist, "how" they seek to fulfill their why, and "what" they will do to put feet to the vision. But branding isn't all about how a company presents itself, it also consists of how people view and perceive the company.

Whether you want to admit it or not, every church has a brand. Every church presents itself in such a way with a logo, a mission statement, services and ministry, and churches also have a reputation in the community.

Rather than being scared of the marketing term, "your church brand," churches need to think through and be prepared to create a brand for themselves in order to make sure that people know what they are about and have a great reputation in the community.

It has been said that social media is the greatest mission field of all time because everyone is on social media. As much as I agree with this statement, I believe that this statement often misleads small churches to believe that they should be on all social media platforms at all times.

After spending time on social media, small churches often feel frustrated, confused, and exhausted that their efforts seem to go in vain.

In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, I give 4 hard truths about social media and what it means for your church.

Advent is a Christian Christmas tradition that seeks to helps Christians look forward to the coming of Jesus. Since the 4th Century, the Western Church sets aside the four weeks leading up to Christmas as a time to reflect, remember, and look forward to Jesus’ second coming.

To help your church members focus on Jesus' birth and 2nd coming, you and your church can and should create Advent-related content. To help you out, I have created four social media graphics (to match the 4 weeks of Advent) and 5 Advent readings, including a non-traditional Week 5 reading for Christmas Morning.

In this episode of the podcast, we talk about 3 different ways to use these readings to create content, develop automated email sequences, and create at-home advent kits for your church family.

Sure, most of the time, visitors come to your church website, but if you're paying good money for a great website, you might as well use it to serve your church members! There are many things in church life that our church members need to get info on: events, sign-ups, ministries, giving, past sermons, announcements, etc., and rather than send them to multiple places all over your website, why not create a one stop shop for all things for your church members.

Creating a central hub on your website is a simple way to get better response, follow-up, and trust from your congregation. In this episode, we talk about how to build one, what should be in the HUB, and how to get people to actively use it.

In the 18th Century, Sunday School was created to fill a need in people's community. What was the need? Education. Since the evolution of society and ministry, Sunday School switched from being a place where children and adults were given a basic education to a place where people were being taught about the basics of the faith. However, in recent years, Sunday School numbers have be dwindling, leaving churches asking the question, "How do we get people to come back to Sunday School and the church building to grow their faith?"

In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, Marc talks about how we need to flip our focus from getting people to come to the church to learn more about their faith and instead get out to our congregation. How do we do this? Through podcasting. This episode is the first of many episodes talking about the benefits of podcasting for your church, how it can help grow the faith on your congregation throughout the week, and how, if done correctly, can succeed in the same goals for which churches still do Sunday School.

Every church has a mission and vision. Granted, it may be as simple as the Great Commission or the 2 Greatest Commandments or a full blown development statement with values and graphics to match. But either way, every church has a reason for its existence and its purpose in its community, but sadly, many churches don't tell people those mission, vision, and values. In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, Marc talk about what each of these statements/ideas are and how you should craft a webpage on your website to inform website visitors what your church is all about!

Is the church bulletin dead? When you ask churches from all across the country this question, the response is pretty varied. Some churches have both a physical and printed bulletin, some churches say that stopping their printed bulletin was the best decision their church ever made, and some say that they will only and ever do a printed church bulletin.

So what should your church do regarding the printed church bulletin?

In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, I list out the pros and cons of having a physical, printed church bulletin, digital alternatives if you decide to drop the printed bulletin, ways to save money on printed bulletins, and my open and honest thoughts regarding the use of bulletins in the worship service.

When I was taught how to preach, I was told that you have to have three things attached to each point that you give in a sermon . . . or the whole sermon for that matter. Those three sections are:

  1. Explanation
  2. Illustration
  3. Application

You tell the congregation what the text is saying, you use an illustration to bring that explanation to life, and then you tell people how to apply it to his or her every day life.

Although the explanation and application of a text and bullet point are arguably the most import pieces of your sermon, the illustration is what helps people remember what you taught and breathes life into the words you're saying.

When it comes to creating social media posts for your church, you might as well repurpose the content you have already put a ton of time into! I believe the illustration is the best piece of sermon content that you can repurpose and recreate to grow your social media presence . . . without having to figure out what you should create next!

In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, I talk about three different ways that you can repurpose your sermon illustrations to help your illustrations last all week long in the minds of your people.

Chad Harms is the lead pastor of Creekside Bible Church, a church of 100 people on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon. Over the last many years, Chad has started viewing media as a part of the church's mission and how media can help his local church carry out it's core values, impact his congregation, and reach his community.

Do pastors have to be on social media to have influence in today's world, and if so, what are the best ways for pastors and small church leaders to show up?

In today's episode, I interview Dr. Jen Bennett to talk about how pastors can be leaders who are worth following on social media. From tips to tricks and method and systems, Dr. Jen Bennett shares her personal experience and practices to show small church pastors that they can have influence online, too!

If you look around at your city, you may start seeing VR Arcades (virtual reality arcades) pop up! This fun and new exciting technology is able to let people actually FEEL like they are in a real life game. From roller coaster rides, escape rooms, racing, and first person shooter games, Virtual Reality is giving consumers an experience like never before!

Virtual Reality, though, is not a new concept; however, because of recent technology improvements, virtual reality is now able to be a common household experience where companies and game creators are able to create open spaces where people can step in, create an avatar, and experience life like never before! Like literally, think of the blue Avatar people from Disney. Just like the human took on the form of an avatar and lived in that reality, though he body stayed on earth, we now are able to sit in our homes and enter into a whole new world and live a life like never before.

And just like companies and game creators are stepping into this new open digital world, church are beginning to step into this virtual world, have worship services, small groups, and even baptisms! What do we call this new virtual world? The MetaVerse.

So what should we do with this new phenomenon called the MetaVerse and should small churches step into this new world? Let's talk about it!

Now more than ever, church media focused companies, personalities, and agencies are pushing churches to grow their online platforms because you can reach more people than ever before online! Which is 100% true!

But as a small church, we often don't have the goal of growing our online followings because that's not our purpose. Our purpose is to reach our people and to reach our local communities. If this is the case, what should your media goal for 2022 be?

In this episode, we talk about what your ONE GOAL FOR 2022 should be, and then I will give you three ways for you to accomplish this one goal!

Since the 1920s churches have been using modern technology and media outlets to broadcast their services and messages to their communities and the country, but gone are the days of radio and televised services. Now, churches both small and large are able to livestream their worship services and sermons without having to have TV and radio deals, and since the COVID pandemic, small churches all across the country have started livestreaming their services.

In this episode, we'll cover five ways to instantly improve your church's livestream. If your church doesn't livestream its services, we have three things that you can do instead to digitally reach your congregation and encourage them in their faith journey.

Since the invention of the iPhone and the app store in 2008, people have started using their phones to do more than just make a phone call or text someone. There are now millions of apps where people are able to connect, share photos, and play games. Which may lead you to think, "Should our church get a phone app?"

Many church technology and media companies will tell you "yes," but is that the wisest move for your church? Let's talk about it.

I would say that most churches today use a projector in order for their congregation to read the lyrics during worship. Many churches still use hymn books, but as technology prices decrease and usability increases, many churches are finding that it's cheaper and more efficient to put their worship slides on the screen.

But with great power, comes great responsibility.

Even though most churches are taking advantage of being able to put the lyrics on the screen, I believe that many churches, with good intentions, do more harm than good. In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, I am going to give you four quick ways that you can instantly improve the look of your worship slides for next Sunday.

We are living in the digital era which means more and more platforms, places, and things are moving online. Everything from shopping to ordering food to watching TV is all done digitally and from the comfort of your own home.

In the recent years, church leaders have started having debates if the church should step into this online arena and have digital platforms. Many pastors and churches have risen to the challenge and have created large online ministries, online worship experiences (full of pre service content, news-like banner reels, and amazing videography), and social media presences. Others, have pushed back and said, "the church should never be online."

And then there are people who are in the middle. These are the people that know that online is here to stay, but understand that the church is supposed to be the gathering of the called out ones. These are the people that know that they can reach more people online, but they may not think that they have the time, energy, and budget to do it.

If this is you, you're going to love today's episode because in this episode, we are going to break down some of those barriers to getting your church's online presence established. We are going to go over a few quick ways that your church can start an online ministry, and WHY you should think about this moving into the new year. And let me say that when I say "online ministry," I'm talking about starting an online ministry for YOUR CHURCH PEOPLE.

A few months ago, I was able to teach two different workshops at the 2021 Illinois Christian School Teacher's Convention, this being one of those workshops! Although this workshop was designed for teachers and school administrators, there are still many practical takeaways for churches when it comes to how a website can make or break your school.

Your church is on Facebook and instagram, you have a website, texting platform, giving platform, church management software, etc., and you're excited for all the digital media and program that your church uses, but have you ever stopped and wondered WHY you have these different media platforms, WHAT are their purpose, and IF you're using them well?

So many churches have a website because they're supposed to. So many have facebook because it's a good tool. Many church have instagram because "that's where the millennials are," but unless you know WHY you are doing what you're doing and HOW you will accomplish your goals, you could be wasting your time and efforts. You need to have a mission and a vision for your media, digital content, and online programs.

So as we begin to close out 2021 and look forward to 2022, I want to help you think through your media this past year and prepare yourself and your church for what's next!

So here are the 5 Questions that you need to ask in order to Prepare your Church Digital Media for 2022:

1. What is the church's overall mission and does our media support the mission?

2. What is the purpose of each platform you're on and using?

3. What is considered a "win" on this platform?

4. What will help your people grow?

5. What will help your church grow?

In this episode of the podcast, we break down these five questions and if you can answer them all, you can be sure that you are ready for 2022.

FOMO, the fear of missing out, is what causes so many people to do what they do, whether good or bad. In fact, many business people and musical artist have been able to use FOMO as a way to make sure that their events are well attended, that people are engaged while at the event, and then have people talk about that event for months for come. I believe that the church can use FOMO as a way to do just this with the Christmas season: have hire attended events, keep people engaged while at the event, and then talk about the event for months to come!

In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, I give three ways that you can lean into the FOMO culture and create some amazing events for your church people and then use digital media to use those events as a catalyst for excitement and engagement of your people, and in doing such, hopefully create opportunity to see new people walk through your church doors.

A church website is the key piece of your online presence, and a bad website will actually hurt more than help. A website needs to be designed well and look modern, but there is also certain things that website visitors are looking for. In this episode, we are talking about the three types of questions that people are asking and are hoping your church's website answers. If you answer these questions, that chances of them being comfortable enough to walk through your doors greatly increases.

Whether we're talking about a small church or a large church, PowerPoints or teaching notes on the screen is a central media piece of the worship service. Since PowerPoints first came to the scene, pastors and teachers have discovered the power behind using them to help solidify their messages by not only saying their points but showing their points.

However, many pastors seem to hurt their messages when they use a PowerPoint, rather than helping their messages. In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, I give four ways PowerPoints can hurt the message and provide 5 actions that pastors should take to make sure their PowerPoints serve them and their church.

What's more important? Having a facebook page or having a website?

Now obviously, I'm going to say "both," but I have heard it said from many people that the website isn't as important as the church's facebook page. So let's talk about it!

Facebook lets people see, in real time, what is happening with your church. Photos of events, families, services, and everything else shows the community that cool stuff is actually happening at the church!

Your website systematically tells people your beliefs, your mission and vision, the layout and times of your ministries, and introduces them to the life of your church. Your website is also your central hub for putting your sermons in one location as well as an easy way for people to give online.

So which should you focus on? Well, in my opinion, your website is the bedrock of your online presence but facebook is what lets people actually see what's going on in your church in real time.

Now, I can't see which one will bring in the most people because honestly, people don't just come to church because of a good website or a strong social media presence. People bring people to church. You can actually have no online presence at all and still have a healthy church!

However, when people are invited to your church, they are going to check you out to know what to expect.

As a small church, you may not have time to keep up with social media as much as you'd like. A website though? You only need to update every so often with new pictures and text to keep up with any changes.

So if you ask me, for a small little church, I would say make sure you have a great website in place and have your Google my Business up and running!

If you have the time, use facebook, too! We talked the other week about types of social media posts you can create, so I encourage you to check out that video here: https://youtu.be/da4BrR6nYNE

But if you ask me, which is more important? Facebook or a website? I would say that a website is more important longterm.

Getting your church's sermons online is nothing new, but have you ever thought about the best way to get your sermons online? In this episode of the Small Church Media Podcast, I break down the four ways that churches are able to get their sermons online, and what I recommend is the best practice for you to use.

Here are the four ways that your church can post your sermons online:

  1. Use your own website
  2. Use a shared sermon library like sermonaudio.com
  3. Use a website company that offers sermon library hosting
  4. Use a podcast platform to host your sermon

There are so many social media platforms out there right now, but every church AT LEAST needs to be on Facebook and Instagram and here's why: this is where the core people are who are active members in your church.

So what should you be doing on these platforms?

You should be sharing content that people will (a) want to share to their friends and (b) encourage your followers. You can post announcements, but honestly, people in your church don't want your social media to be a news bulletin. They want your social media to speak to them.

On Facebook and Instagram, you should be focusing on 4 different kinds of posts:

  1. Sermon Points/Recaps

  2. Encouraging quotes or Bible verse

  3. Mini Sermons

  4. Pictures from church life

We know that you don't have a lot of time as a pastor, so we wanted to give you two different posts for the first three categories (since we can't take picture of your church). Each post comes with a graphic (or multiple graphics for one post) and text that you can copy and paste into your post.

Your church needs to be on Google My Business. Why? Because if your church isn't on Google My Business, then people will have a hard time finding you! In this episode, I talk about about 4 main reasons why you need a Google My Business for your church.

Here's the TL;DR version:

  1. It helps people find your church because you are telling Google that you're real
  2. It gets you onto Google Maps
  3. When you add pictures, it helps people quickly see the outside and inside of your church
  4. It lets your people review your church...which helps more people find it.

In this episode, we break down the four reasons why your church needs a Google My Business page.

Welcome to the Small Church Media Podcast!

My name is Marc. I am a podcaster over at Real Talk Christian Podcast, the creative behind Marc Hyde Creative, and for the last 8 years, I've worked in the church world as a children's minister, youth pastor, creative director, and teaching pastor.

This podcast, unlike many other church media podcasts and YouTube channels is designed to quip and train pastors and church leaders of small churches....small meaning churches of 100 or less...fulfill their roles as pastors. Seeing as the average church size is 75 people, and I've been a part of many of those church, I thought, "hey! maybe I can help you guys!"

Getting back to pastors. As many already know, the pastor's role is to equip their people for Kingdom work, encourage their flock in the faith, and teach those in their care.

So in this podcast and YouTube channel, we're going to teach you how to do all of those things for as cheap as possible while still being as effective as possible. We're going to teach you how to understand church media, make better sermon powerpoints, start new ministries that are fueled by digital media, and maybe even bring some people in to chat with you about church media for small churches.

Starting August 17 and every Tuesday after that, I'll be posting a new episode everywhere podcast can be seen and heard. I promise that I'll do my best to keep them under 10 minutes so that you can take in the content quickly and in a time efficient manner, but I'm a Baptist Pastor....which means they may go longer.

I'm looking forward to learning alongside you and help your small church equip, encourage, and teach your congregations in ways that you never thought possible.
