In this episode of L&D Go Beyond podcast, Amit Garg, Founder & CEO of Upside Learning Solutions speaks with Arun Pradhan, Co-Founder, ModelThinkers on Secrets to Being Smarter, Faster.

Arun says that ModelThinkers is a buy-in from Charlie Munger’s thought of making a bigger impact by developing a latticework of mental models. Most people, typically, while trying to solve a problem or work out something, are unconsciously referring to their mental model. However, they are unaware of how they actually arrived at the conclusion. On the other hand, someone who is trying to be smarter and more innovative will have a whole toolkit of options. According to Arun, the interesting stuff often happens at the intersection between those frameworks. It’s like as building a bigger repository of mental models, e.g., consuming books and lessons which is one way of clicking the mental models and what recipes we can make with these different concepts to make a bigger impact. So being much more deliberate and conscious about collecting and using these mental models/frameworks is one way that you can be smarter and faster.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • Defining a mental model and their application in cross-disciplines.
  • Understanding current mental models from L&D perspective and getting smarter in selecting from among these mental models.
  • Applying relevant mental model type vis-à-vis things or tasks that we or audience want to achieve.
  • Collecting or stealing big ideas from the big disciplines and experimenting it your context.

In this episode of L&D Go Beyond podcast, Amit Garg Founder & CEO of Upside Learning Solutions speaks with Kevin M. Yates, The L&D Detective on challenges and opportunities for measuring the impact of training and learning on human performance and business goals.

Kevin has been in the training, learning, and talent development space for over 20 years working across multiple industries in a myriad of local and global roles, the most recent being learning analytics and impact measurement. Having felt saturated a few years ago, Kevin said that he was on the verge of leaving the training, learning, and talent development. At the same time, he discovered his interest in learning analytics, to which he was introduced to by Jack and Patti Phillips of ROI Institute. It has a methodology for measuring return on investment for training, learning, and talent development. It prompted him to stay on. Over time, people started comparing him with Sherlock Holmes due to his investigations into data & facts and trying to solve measurement mysteries. And that’s how he got the hat of the L&D detective.

Kevin also raised an important point and that is training and learning must be used not only for measurably changing behaviors, actions, and performance but also for sustaining them.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • The biggest challenge: Not proactively thinking about outcome & defining impact while fulfilling training and learning ‘order’.
  • Defining intention and purpose of training and learning solution for impact measurement.
  • Culture of learning: Transitioning from order-taking relationship to discovery-based engagement.
  • Measuring impact as an art, talent, and skill: A challenge and opportunity for organizations finding a unique skillset or upskilling and hiring from outside.
  • Telling an impact story by combining operational efficiency data with learning effectiveness data for helping business achieve a business goal.
  • Use of predictive analytics for answering expectation for the outcomes from the training and learning solutions we are offering.

Rance is a story designer, author, and speaker. His book ‘Instructional Story Design’ is practical guide for developing stories that train. He is the founder of Needastory.com and school of story design for those who are struggling with storytelling at work.

According to Rance, stories work well in workplace learning due to their capability to prepare us for a situation and to act in the real world. Training can be made memorable and actionable by telling a story effectively. The main reason why stories are so effective is because they are a great vehicle for delivering emotion. A story needs to contain 2 essential elements: relatable characters and strong conflict.

The purpose of story design, according to Rance, is to fill the gap between story and action.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • Drawing balance between story and instruction in producing the output.
  • Telling story first followed by reflection question based on emotional content then followed by decision-making and feedback.
  • Creating relatable characters through audience profiling; their current circumstances, reaction to circumstances, their viable fear, and training benefits to them.
  • Creating a strong action-list as a tool for performance improvement and covering important aspect of overall learning design.
  • Attributes & challenges of 3 story types; fictional, non-fictional and metaphor.
  • Overcoming challenges for using stories in workplace learning.

In this episode of L&D Go Beyond podcast, Amit Garg speaks with Karl Kapp about gamifying workplace learning the right way.

Karl started his discussion by highlighting the confusion between gamification and game-based learning. The common mistake that many people make is considering that gamification necessarily involves some kind of a game. Taking an example of progress bar, feedback loop, etc. he explained that the correct idea or concept is using game elements or the pieces of game. Gamification can also be done using concepts or psychological ideas such as story-based instruction. Karl also explained 3 types of gamification, namely Structural Gamification, Content Gamification and Performance-based Gamification. Gamification in his opinion allows us to have transparency into what is being evaluated, how it is being evaluated and what our goals are. So, if the parameters are reasonable and decided upon in consultation with the learners themselves, gamification can be very helpful and motivating. As a learning professional, our job he emphasized is to decide what the right learning intervention is at the right time and how to do it effectively.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast:

  • Envisioning KPIs through gamification for performance improvement and feedback.
  • Employee group contribution in devising the gamified experience.
  • Gamifying the process and not the end outcome by focusing on behaviors and elements which are enabling the overall performance.
  • Transitioning from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation with extrinsic as a trigger.
  • Tips on avoiding mistakes in applying gamification to workplace learning.
  • Games as a vehicle for non-linear thinking in unveiling insights for organizations in the competitive marketplace.

Both Sam & Rick, as senior learning specialists, support Open Learning Campus (OLC), which is the World Bank Group’s single destination for staff and client learning.

Rick recalls the situation around March 13, 2020 when the World Bank Group suddenly had to transition to the work from home scenario until further notice, because of the pandemic that shook the entire world. However, with the OLC architecture already in place, Rick says that it really helped them to balance that transitional phase. According to Sam, the biggest challenge in delivering learning programs during the pandemic is that losing that physical presence. With the full hybrid model, it has added another challenge for the instructors to not fall back on the old habits.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • Establishing balance between physical presence in the room and the virtual environment while transitioning from room to virtual.
  • Spaced learning as an opportunity of improvement in quality of delivery.
  • Being respectful of the learner’s time by designing learning which is more accessible and digestible.
  • Just-in-time learning mindset as a rising trend within workplace learning methodology.

In this podcast, Amit Garg speaks with Patti Shank, President at Learning Peaks LLC, about Writing Better Multiple-Choice Questions to Assess Learning.

Patti shares the very interesting background story of her new book. She says that over a period of many years, whoever she’s worked with, anyone who wanted to create a test with multiple-choice questions, has ended up effectively destroying the test, which was an awful experience. She then followed up the research further and was surprised to know that even her own multiple-choice questions had problems. She then spent the last 4 years reading and learning everything about multiple-choice questions, and then wrote a book on it. Patty says that it is the hardest book she has written and covers many things about multiple-choice questions which people think they know but they don’t.

According to Patti, people have certain misconceptions about multiple-choice questions, the biggest one being that a multiple-choice test can only assess recall. However, the main purpose of an MCQ test is to assess the learning objectives, and whether the people who took these courses are able to meet learning objectives and, if not, we need to fix these courses.

Below are the major takeaways from this podcast-

  • Framing right questions for performance-based learning objectives
  • Good distractors for learning designers to keep in mind
  • Differentiators for formative versus summative assessments
  • Scenario-based questions for better recall
  • Questions to play the role as actual task

In this curious podcast, Amit Garg speaks with Stefaan Van Hooydonk, Founder of Global Curiosity Institute, on Intersection of curiosity and learning at workplaces. The institute, brainchild of Stefaan aims to help individuals and organizations foster a mindset of curiosity to inspire them to keep discovering and innovative. Stefaan has worked with numerous organizations in learning leadership roles covering 6 industries and 8 countries over 3 decades.

Stefaan shares his observation from his early career that there are people at organization who are natural learners and curious. But the challenge is that such people, whom he calls ‘A’ players, are only 10-15% of the entire workforce. On the other hand there are ‘B’ players who want to learn but miss that chance of learning due to some challenges. Stefaan identified this challenge of turning these ‘B’ players to ‘A’ players. Talking about the L&D choices and mindset, Stefaan highlights about the availability of choices i.e. either L&D is driving innovation or weighing more on compliance. He emphasized that companies need to be intentional about their curiosity and exploration, to avoid dilution of their learning efforts.

Stefaan defines curiosity as ‘the mindset to challenge the status quo; explore, discover, and learn’. Workplace curiosity needs to be productive – start with a question, focus on getting answer, be disciplined enough to get there. Productive curiosity often leads to better exploitation as well as new exploration.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • Achieving balance between exploration & exploitation
  • Organization’s life span link with curiosity
  • Measuring curiosity at workplace
  • Training people to curiosity- An L&D approach

In this podcast, Amit Garg speaks with Toby Harris, who is the Director of Product Marketing at Filtered, a learning tech company. Toby has extensive experience in various roles like sales, marketing & project management and has closely observed the industry dynamics. He is excited about working with clients who are willing to break the rules to apply research and to have challenging conversations inside their organizations. He is an ardent believer of how learning science and learning research has brought about a sea-change in large organizations and thereby is influencing the decision making.

In the context of this discussion, Toby touches upon Curation and Learning Ecosystems. He elaborates on what they do at Filtered, that is helping organizations get the best return on their L&D spend by using data to decide on the most important skills for an organization, analyzing and filtering it to zero in on the relevant content, and delivering it via LXP or multi-channel campaign. This is where curation comes in.

The discussion also covers transitions in the industry with regard to what influences decision making and how there have been positive changes that have made the industry decision makers to consider using curation and creation prudently to achieve their learning goals.

The talk primarily revolves around the following key points:

  • Recognizing & analyzing curation
  • Contextualizing & aligning the content & curation with organizational goals
  • Identifying gaps in creation through curation & vice-versa
  • How creation remains critical for unique & most impactful requirements
  • Analyzing complexity types hindering the learning culture

In this engaging discussion, Amit Garg talks to Keith Keating, Global Learning Strategist at GP Strategies about design thinking for learning engagement. With a vast experience of 20 years in L&D, Keith leads clients on the development and execution of their global learning strategies. He harnesses design thinking to help fortune 500 clients tap into understanding and resolving un-met customer and employee needs. Keith finds his passion in preparing these companies for the future of work.

While talking to Amit, Keith candidly mentioned about his journey and how he was quite obsessed about losing a job & job titles initially. His belief of being a lifelong learner led him to gain control over his own future & adopting a learning approach. Keith’s keen passion lies in enabling, encouraging and empowering talent to take control of their future.

Sharing his thoughts on learning engagement, Keith talks how learning engagement is really about the quality and quantity of learner’s participation in the training or learning experience. Keith has some great advice for learning leaders and learning designers in terms of prototyping faster and being wary of ‘too much’ engagement. He believes that motivation & inspiration are two of the biggest gaps that hamper the ability to create that learning engagement.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • Changing learner mindset from being ‘order takers’ to ‘trusted advisors’
  • Culture - A desired catalyst for learning engagement
  • Design thinking integration with learning engagement
  • Treating technology as a tool & not as a solution

Amit Garg gets candid with Kirk Donaghey, Standards and Frameworks Manager at Optus about building learning programs that engage. As an accomplished people leader, Kirk’s focus is on coaching and development to achieve sales and performance growth. Being a learning and development professional, he possesses in-depth experience pertaining to coaching, facilitation, and leadership development.

In this podcast, Kirk emphasizes learning engagement while differentiating it with a learning experience. He interprets learning engagement as how much engagement a session or a piece of learning is fetching. Learning experience on the other hand is more about being holistic and deals with end-to-end experience and accessibility of that learning. In his discussion, he put forth the concept of moving from high effort & low value to high value & low effort in bringing engagement.

Kirk spoke from both facilitator and digital perspective while sticking to the 3 principles of sustainable, accessible & experiential which he substantiated further when it comes to engagement.

Talking about the frameworks, Kirk mentions how their organization is keeping track of engagement while considering personalization.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • Key drivers of learning engagement.
