Why does Australia recognise Palestine, but not Taiwan?Taiwan is a thriving democracy, home to 23 million people and the world’s leading producer of advanced microchips. It has its own government, its own military, and its own foreign policy. By every practical measure, it operates as an independent country. And yet — Australia, the United States, and most of the world refuse to officially recognise it. Instead, they continue to follow the One China Policy, acknowledging Beijing while keeping Taiwan in diplomatic limbo. This video explores the history of the One China Policy, why Australia and the U.S. haven’t abandoned it, Taiwan’s own preferences for its future, and what might happen if recognition ever did occur. Along the way, we look at the paradox of Australia recognising Palestine — even while it’s governed by Hamas, a listed terrorist organisation — but not Taiwan, one of the world’s strongest democracies.👉 Why does this double standard exist?👉 What would change if Taiwan were recognised?👉 And how long can this fragile balance hold before someone forces the issue?🔔 Subscribe for more analysis on strategy, security, and the big questions shaping Australia and the world.#Taiwan #OneChinaPolicy #Australia #USPolitics #TalkingTactics---Like the 3D printed models in the background? Australia’s closest and potentially most important ally isn’t half a world away — it’s right on our doorstep. Just four kilometres from Queensland lies Papua New Guinea, a nation with deep cultural ties to Australia and growing strategic importance in the Indo-Pacific.In this video, we break down the emerging Australia–PNG partnership and what it means for both countries. From the landmark Pukpuk Defence Treaty and the inclusion of a PNG team in the NRL, to new opportunities through the PALM labour mobility scheme, this is about more than aid or diplomacy. It’s about creating a true partnership — one that strengthens security, builds skills, and ties our nations closer together. We’ll also look at the challenges: the treaty still isn’t signed, China is leaning in hard, and Canberra may need to offer more — like expanded migration and training opportunities — to seal the deal.Could PNG become Australia’s closest ally, and a model for how we engage with the entire Pacific? Australia is stepping into the missile age — but is it moving fast enough to keep pace with China? Right now, Australia operates a range of advanced missiles, from Javelins and Stingers to long-range strike systems like HIMARS. But here’s the catch: most of them are imported. Australia is making a major leap in military aviation by replacing its Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters (ARH) with the powerful AH-64E Apache Guardian. In this video, we explore why the Australian Defence Force (ADF) chose the Apache, how it compares to the Tiger ARH, and what this upgrade means for Australia’s military capabilities. With advanced firepower, Longbow radar technology, and superior battlefield networking (Link 16), the Apache Guardian is set to revolutionize Australia’s attack helicopter fleet. The AH-64E Apache Guardian brings unmatched situational awareness, featuring the AN/APG-78 Longbow fire-control radar, which enables automatic target acquisition and engagement at extended ranges. With Hellfire missiles, Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM), and APKWS guided rockets, the Apache is a force multiplier for the Australian Army. Its Link 16 data-sharing system allows it to integrate seamlessly with other ADF assets, improving joint operations and real-time intelligence sharing. Unlike the Tiger ARH, which suffered from high maintenance costs and poor availability rates, the Apache boasts a proven track record with a robust global supply chain and high operational readiness. This acquisition signals a major shift in Australia’s aerial combat capabilities, aligning with global allies like the U.S. Army. Australia is making its biggest investment in naval power in generations, more than doubling the surface combatant fleet. With new Hunter-class frigates, general-purpose warships, and uncrewed drone ships, the Royal Australian Navy is set to become more powerful than ever. Plus there will be increased lethality with long range strike and maritime strike upgrades such as the Tomahawk cruise missile from Raytheon, of which Australia is purchasing 200.Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, Defence Industry Minster Pat Conroy and the Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Mark Hammond made the announcement in February 2024 and many of the capabilities that were announced have either commenced construction, narrowed down designs or been delivered, such as the first Arafura class Offshore Patrol Vessel. 🔹 What does this expansion mean for Australia’s defence strategy?🔹 How do long-range strike missiles like the Tomahawk fit in?🔹 What impact will this have on regional security? This historic move is shaping the future of naval warfare in the Indo-Pacific. In this episode of Talking Tactics, we dive into the exciting changes following David Crisafulli’s election as the new Premier of Queensland. Crisafulli has already promised a major 100-day review of Brisbane’s Olympic venue infrastructure, which could bring some much-needed clarity—and possibly new direction—to the preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. With the QSAC (Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre) plan facing all but scrapped, Crisafulli's review will likely focus on three alternative options for Brisbane’s main Olympic stadium:The Gabba Redevelopment – a proposed upgrade to Brisbane's iconic stadium to meet Olympic standards.Victoria Park Stadium – a fresh stadium proposal in the heart of the city with a higher price tag but big potential.Northshore Hamilton Stadium – a new stadium concept located along the river, aiming to add a unique waterfront experience to the Olympic Games.David Crisafulli said during the election campaign that there will be "no new stadiums" built for the Olympics. Does that rule out Vic Park and Northshore Hamilton, leaving only The Gabba option on the table? There was a lot of criticism of that plan initially - will we be going back to that?Let's discuss what this new government could mean for Brisbane’s Olympic legacy.Today, we're talking tactics. #davidcrisafulli #brisbaneolympics #thegabba https://youtu.be/YRjvhiIbCeU00:00 Introduction00:43 QSAC Is Scrapped 01:06 The Three Remaining Options02:34 Could Federal Government Funding Be Reallocated to Help with the Main Stadium?04:14 An Exclusive Chat with Davidf Crisafulli 06:00 What Do I Think Is Going To Happen? 06:55 What Do YOU Think Is Going to Happen? ---Talking Tactics delivers an informed and progressive look into new world Business, Finance, Politics, Infrastructure, Defence, Technology and Current Events. Where will the Swimming event be held during the Brisbane 2032 Games? Will it be in the Brisbane Live arena, as initially planned? Or out at the Sleeman Sports Centre aka Chandler, Brisbane's 'premier' swimming complex. Could we drop in a pool at Suncorp Stadium, the Centenary Pool in Spring Hill, the Newmarket Pool or maybe we get all the swimmers to dive into the Brisbane River and dodge all the bull sharks living in there as they race up the lanes? Ariarne Titmus, Mollie O’Callaghan, and Kaylee McKeown are all Queenslanders who have now won gold for Australia. The female 4x 100m relay featuring three Queenslanders has also won gold. Elijah Winnington has won silver, and the men’s 4 by 200 metre relay team features two Queenslanders has also won silver. Australia’s water polo team is exceeding expectations and the triathlons look to be going ahead. Queensland has produced far more swimming champions than any other state and because of that, I believe that we should be know as the "The Home of Australian Swimming," And we need a world class aquatic centre to be able to keep producing those champions. The CFMEU is now proven to be corrupt – a recent 60 Minutes investigation has found the union has been using EBA agreements to fund organised crime and bikie gangs. This has been occurring in all states across Australia, including Queensland. The Albanese Government has put the union into administration, but has this gone far enough? The CFMEU has caused havoc within the Australian economy defrauding the Aussie taxpayer of millions of dollars, and the Labor Government is complicit. Successive Labor leaders have removed the industry watchdog allowing the CFMEU to work with impunity and little oversight. This is an open secret. The CFMEU has been linked to or directly responsible for the movement of drugs, including MDMA and methamphetamine. They have utilised stand-over tactics to bully small businesses and honest workers into unfair bargaining agreements. Over the past week, they have blocked the Cross River Rail. Their tactics have cost the country days of productivity. In Victoria, 18,500 days of productivity have been lost and in Queensland, 11,000 days have been lost. I believe the CFMEU should be deregistered as a union. We should return to separate unions such as a sparkie union, a plumber’s union etc. What do you think? Australia dominates the mining industry, the leading the charge is BHP, the largest mining company globally. From its humble beginnings in Broken Hill, Australia, in 1885 to its current status as a multinational metals and mining giant, BHP's journey is nothing short of remarkable.UPDATE: As of earlier today, the BHP bid to buy Anglo American has failed. As per the Australian Financial Review: "BHP confirmed it had not been able to reach an agreement to secure the backing of Anglo’s board and so would not proceed. BHP must now walk away for at least six months as a result." Today I’m talking a look at BHP's rich history, innovative techniques, and pivotal role in Australia's industrial development, including its contribution to iconic structures like the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games may seem far off, but if we don't get started on stadium upgrades, infrastructure construction and planning soon, we might run out of time. Which is why it was great that the 60 day review of the Olympic venues from Graham Quirk was submitted on Friday, and released today, which saw a recommendation of scrapping The Gabba redevelopment, and building a brand new world class stadium at Victoria Park for $3.4 billion. Only for QLD Premier Steven Miles to ignore the recommendations of the report and announce the opposite - that new stadium isn't happening and instead, opening and closing ceremonies will be at Suncorp Stadium and the athletics will be at QSAC Stadium at Nathan. What a rollercoaster of a day. Steven Miles' announcement came as I was editing my reaction video to the Quirk review, so I had to quickly add in my two cents on that. I might consider making a full video on the new stadium options soon but wanted to get this out today. What do you think? Is Suncorp and QSAS the way to go for the Brisbane Olympics? Woudl you have liked to see a new Victoria Park stadium or did you think that the Gabba demolition and rebuild was the right option? Let us know in the comment section down below. With a staggering price tag and growing opposition, the fate of the Gabba hangs in the balance. From the initial plans to add 8000 seats to the stadium, costing $2.7 billion, to the subsequent backlash and resignations, the future of the Gabba as the host venue for the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics competition remains uncertain. We'll explore the factors that led to this uncertainty, including a review by former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and recent statements from key figures like John Coates.Discover the alternative venues being considered, including Suncorp Stadium in Milton, Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, Albion, and a unique proposal for a new super stadium above Cross River Rail Woolloongabba. The Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games are eight years away, and that's time, but if there are delays to the preparations, we might quickly run out of time.*NB. We interviewed the Lord Mayor the week before Annastacia Palaszczuk announced her retirement, and before Steven Miles became the new premier of Queensland. We included a small piece at the end of the video noting it, but weren't able to fully incorporate all the recent events that have happened, especially Steven Miles' announcement that he "would" establish an independent authority to look at the venues for the Games, just as the Lord Mayor has asked for, and also the potential "pausing" of the Gabba's redevelopment. We will hopefully make updated videos on these projects as more announcements from the new premier are made.**Brisbane's Lord Mayor recently quit the Intergovernmental Leaders Forum, a committee designed to advise the 2032 Coordination Office on issues essential to the games such as infrastructure. He quit as he felt like Annastacia Palaszczuk's State Government were making all decisions related to the games behind closed doors without the Forum meeting and discussions taking place. The final straw was the announcement of the RNA Stadium upgrade and request for Brisbane City Council to cough up more money for that project. The upgrade was to make a home for the Brisbane Lions AFL team and Brisbane Heat cricket teams while The Gabba Stadium underwent its $2.7 Billion upgrade. I sat down with Adrian Schrinner in order to find out exactly why he quit, what he wants to happen instead and what it actually means for the preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In a significant development for Brisbane's northern suburbs, a $35 million study will be led by the Queensland Investment Corporation to explore the potential construction of a toll tunnel connecting Kedron and Carseldine. This ambitious project, spanning about 7 kilometres, promises to reduce congestion and improve connectivity by seamlessly linking the Bruce Highway to Legacy Way, Clem 7, M1, and Centenary Highway. The study will assess technical, financial, and transportation aspects while considering the impact on public and active transport options in the corridor. This study is looking at a highly contentious area of Brisbane’s northside known as the North West Transport Corridor: an area that includes plenty of bushland and green space which has been set aside for decades for future surface-level transport developments. But there is increasing calls to protect this green space, rather than strip it away, and add new transport developments underground via tunnels. This isn’t even the first tunnel proposal – a study was recently completed by the Brisbane City Council to look at a potential combined road and rail tunnel, with connections to similar points in this new study. What’s changed in this new study? And finally, Suburban Futures and MODE Design have released images of what the Chermside suburb could become, if heavy through transport was diverted away via the tunnel, and the road reclaimed to become better utilised pedestrian friendly spaces that will enhance the area for businesses, residents and visitors. Let’s take a look. Today we’re talking tactics. #chermsidetunnel #northwesttransportcorridor #brisbanedevelopment

Whether it was the original idea, or the BaT Tunnel (Bus and Train Tunnel) or the currently under construction project. So we wanted to actually have a look at what is actually happening with Brisbane's new rail line, the construction progress of the underground metro tunnels, how it will connect with the Brisbane metro bus rapid transport project and whether this will actually have any benefits for the people of Brisbane. Let's find out because today we're talking tactics.

Today's episode features an interview with Anthony Ryan, CEO of the Brisbane Economic Development Agency.
Brisbane city is no stranger to hosting major events such as State of Origin, the AFL Grand Final, the World Science Festival or the Brisbane Truck Show. And coming up in the next decade is the 2032 Olympic Games, the FIFA Womens World Cup and many other sporting, business or cultural events and Brisbane is really solidifying its position on the world stage. While some may argue that these events are costly and inconvenient, today I’m exploring what significant benefits they bring to the city. I sit down with Anthony Ryan, CEO of the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), who sheds light on the increased notoriety, infrastructure development, investment opportunities, and boost to the tourism industry that major events generate.Discover how hosting these events elevates Brisbane's profile, attracts international businesses, improves infrastructure, and creates a sense of excitement and pride among residents. We discuss the positive economic impact on local businesses, the synergy between simultaneous events, and the long-term tourism growth. But what do you think? Are you excited about Brisbane hosting major events like the 2032 Olympic Games, or do you have reservations about the associated costs and feel that those funds should be directed to more important things, like the housing crisis, or cost of living crisis? I’d love to know what you think in the commect section down below.
Brisbane, Queensland and the rest of Australia is in the middle of a housing crisis. Both for potential home buyers and also renters, housing affordability is a massive issue. And it's something that we need to find a solution to. Brisbane City Council recently released their Brisbane's Sustainable Growth Strategy which outlines what they are planning to do to help combat this issue. It mostly involves increasing density and ensuring the construction of affordable housing in key areas. This will be done by raising the maximum building height in South Bank to the same of the CBD, so there will be residential skyscrapers on the south side of the Brisbane river. It includes incentivizing build-to-rent developments, especially ones with a focus on affordable housing. It also outlines the strategy for Brisbane's future urban renewal precincts, which again aim to increase density in key areas and create a city of precincts that will be supported by and connected to key infrastructure developments such as Cross River Rail and Brisbane Metro So let's take a closer look at this strategy, because today, we're talking tactics.
Is Woolloongabba going to become Brisbane's second CBD? Hot off the heels of the recent announcement that The Gabba’s demolition and reconstruction project has been fully funded, the Queensland Government has recently announced an expansion of the Woolloongabba PDA, which will see more housing, shopping, dining precincts and public space developed. This will include social and affordable housing as well as active gravel corridors to South Bank and the CBD. This will make Woolloongabba one of the biggest urban renewals in Brisbane’s history, when you take into account the already under construction Cross River Rail and Brisbane Metro stations just across Main Street. According to the Queensland Government, Expanding the existing PDA will see a more integrated and coordinated planning approach for the whole suburb and allow for resolving complex planning and development matters that unlock value for the surrounding communities. This project is set to transform the suburb, making it a hub of cultural, sporting, and community activity. The Woolloongabba renewal project is a major development initiative aimed at improving the area's liveability, economic potential, and social fabric. The Gabba Stadium, home of the Brisbane Lions AFL team and the Queensland Bulls cricket team, will be upgraded and expanded to accommodate more fans, female athletes, more accessible entryways and public concourses, with a new public plaza and pedestrian bridge linking it to Rail and Metro Stations. We’re going to take a closer look at the Woolloongabba renewal plans to see what it will actually mean for the residents and visitors to Brisbane. I’d love to know what you all think of the plans in the comment section, or hit me up on my socials down below. Today, we’re talking tactics.

A couple months ago, just after the massive flooding event in South East QLD and northern NSW, I released a video about flood mitigation, and what I think we need to do to prevent or lessen the damage from any future flooding events. And I mentioned the Bradfield Scheme, a massive engineering project proposed to collect floodwater in dams before it did any flooding damage, and then pipe that water out to inland Australia to irrigate farmland and create hydroelectricity. Queensland MP Bob Katter has been a huge proponent of the Bradfield Scheme, and he saw the TikTok version of our video, and Bob reached out because he wanted to chat further about the Scheme. So I sat down with Bob and talked about the Bradfield Scheme and dam building in Queensland and Australia, and a few other topics.
There is a shorter version (and with video) of this interview on my YouTube channel. You can view it here: https://youtu.be/sVi2JMkssZg

Welcome to our very first episode of the Talking Tactics with Mel Pikos Podcast! This is our first crack at uploading a podcast version of our YouTube channel show and it's an extended version of the interview that we did with Franco Giammattei from Ferrari Brisbane. We chat a lot about Ferrari's business model, how to rank up within Ferrari to be offered a chance at buying the special editions and a whole lot more.
If you'd like to watch that YouTube video here is the link: https://youtu.be/O2JoEe_1by8 We had a lot of fun at the dealership, and then I took out an F8 Spider for a drive around Brisbane.
But that was a shorter, 8-minute long episode, and we chatted with Franco for about 35 minutes. So here it is, the whole interview for your listening pleasure.
As I mentioned, this is our first podcast and it's a bit of a trial run. The interview was recorded at the Ferrari showroom, so it's a bit echo-y, and there's some background noise as it is a workplace. But we wanted to make sure that you got to hear everything that Franco said, so we're uploading. As we do more and more interviews, we're going to start setting up a proper podcast recording space, and everything will get better! Please let us know if you have any tips or advice for us newbies, just starting out in the podcast game!
I hope you enjoy the episode. Stay safe and have a great day!
