Tree Talkin' Time is all about tree dogs. We talk to people who hunt various breeds of dogs to pursue and tree anything from squirrels to bear.
In this week's episode I am once again joined by Doug DeRossett. Doug and I just shoot the breeze talking about more cur dogs from his many years of following them. He has had many curs from grade dogs to registered Stephens. He also has traveled and hunted with many different people and in many states. He has always been looking for the best dog he could find.

In this week's episode I am joined by Mike Sheppard. Starting out Mike trapped in his early youth but quickly relized he wanted to coon hunt to increase his fur harvest. Following the advice of a local Bluetick man, he went stright to Dave Dean to get a Hammer bred Bluetick. After that he was hooked. He started breeding dogs as he needed them and has kept a farily nice line of dogs by all accounts. After about 20 years in the coon hunting game, came a dog that put Mike on the map, Piazon. While he did his fair share of winning Piazon shined in the stud pen and his currently sitting at 9th on the historical reproducers list. Mike is hopefull to have a Piazon puppy in the future that will be as good as some of the other top hounds out if him.

In this week's episode I am joined by James McCarson. His start in hunting with dogs started young and included a few squirrel dogs. It wasn't until later in life that James got bit by the squirrel hunting bug, and became addicted! His treeing feist have totally changed his life. He went from being a die hard deer hunter to now only going out a few times a year and wishing he was following his dog Sage the whole time he's out there. Despite only having a few dogs over that last decade he is a well accomplished competition hunter. He has won everything from dog boxes to world hunts and plans to keep on pushing his feist.

In this week's episode I am joined by Michael Profumo. Michael has been a long time listener of the podcast and we have become friends over the last several years. In this week's episode I am joined by Doug DeRossett. Doug is a lifelong cur dog man. He has traveld the country coon hunting with various hounds and curs but has always kept a few good cur dogs. He is a coon hunter that likes a fast track dog that has the brains and nose to handle a tough track. Stephens Curs is where he had the most luck and keeps them even now. Coon hunting was so important to him as a young man he saved up and bought his first coon dog before he could even drive. In this week's episode I am joined De'Andre Williams. De'Andre or Dre as his friends know him is a die hard coon hunter from South Carolina. In this week's episode I am joined by Owen Brayson. Owen had a humble beginning with a neighborhood squirrel dog that turned into so much more many years later. Even when he went looking to get into squirrel dogs he stumbled a bit and was finally given some direction that put him on the right path. That path was a River Run Feist, and Dutchess was her name. She was the start of many successful years in the squirrel dog business. Unfortunatly Hurricane Katrina made squirrel hunting almost impossible and Owen was forced to get rid of his beloved squirrel dogs. Luckily he was able to pick up without missing a beat when he retired and is back at it once again. He is even hosting a number of UKC Squirrel Hunts.

In this episode, Darren Petty joins us once again. He is settling in after his long journey to Sweden and back. In this week's episode I am joined by TJ Bolin. I met TJ at Autumn Oaks and breifly learned about his female redbone Penny. In this week's episode I am joined by Mark Holladay. In episode 138 Robin told us all about the bird dog crosses he is hunting and got me and Mark hooked up so we could talk about them some more. Mark was a bird dog trainer for many years that transitioned to squirrel hunting when the birds vanished. He struggled to find something he liked until he stumbled on a couple of different bird dog crosses. These 2 dogs have built the foundation that Mark and Robin hope to continue for years to come.

In this's weeks episode I am joined by Terry Carr. Terry Carr owned the famous Leopard Wick's Camo Jug long before his rise to fame at the end of John Wick's lead. Terry tells the story of how he found Jug and how he inevitably sold him to John. While waiting for casts to get back on Saturday night/Sunday morning at Black and Tan days Chris Nidy sat down with me to pass the time. We talked about how Chris went from showing Black and Tans and other dogs at AKC dog shows to getting into the nite hunts and eventually finding himself as president of the American Black & Tan Association. Chris had an important message about service and all the work it takes to run an association and hold large events. We all need to step up to help our asssociations, and clubs to continue so todays youth may one day be able to take them over. In this week's episode I am joined by Carlton Savoy. Carlton is a lifelong squirrel dogger with 66 years of experience following dogs in pursuit of bushytails. He has had all types of curs and feist including Cajun Squirrel Dogs that he raised for a number of years. While sniping tree rats has been a major passion, passing it on to the next generation has been more important for many years. He has taken numerous children on their first squirrel hunt. He is also a prominent member of the community and has helped with multiple benefits as well as volunteered his time and talents to cook for families wiht children at St. Jude Hospital. In this week's episode I am joined by retired Pennsylvania game warden Rod Burns. Rod was a long time coon hunter that became a game warden later in life. The job took him away from his passion of running hounds but when retirement came around he was quick to get a pair of pups and pick up right where he left off. In this episode we talk about a few of Rod's wildest and most memorable moments on the job, as well as the differences in coonhunting from when he stopped to recently picking back up. Towards the end of our conversation we speak about the recent political battle we just had here in PA. Luckily we were able to get our point across to a handful of Senators but this is just a warning that we need to be organized and prepared for these types of attacks.

In this week's episode I am joined by father/son duo Greg and Josiah Pulling. Greg and his brother Jim were on the podcast a few years ago. In this episode I am joined by Fletcher Ladner of Rotten Bayou Kennels. Fletcher has been hunting and breeding feist since the mid 90's. What started out with a female being bred to some yard dogs created a successful line for Fletcher and his buddy Harry. In this week's episode I am joined by Shawn O'Neil. While Shawn is a die-hard coyote hunter I wanted to dig into his past. I was finally able to corner my buddy Mick into coming on the podcast this week. I have known Mick for a 6 or 7 years through various social media and forums. Mick is originally from England and has an impressive resume of hunting all across Europe but is now over on this side of the pond in Canada. When he got here pursuing bobcats became his new obsession, and with that came tree dogs. Mick wanted the old style versatile curs that have almost been forgotten about. Jimmy Tipton has lived his whole life in the Smoky Mountains and has been following dogs since he was old enough to walk. He has followed many different hounds but he has found Stephens Curs to be his breed of choice. He has had a lot of luck pursuing bears and coons in the rough mountains around his home.

With 34 World Champion titles won by dogs owned by Jukebox Kennels in a little over 30 years I'd certainly say they are doing something right. Chuck Gaietto, Ron Smith, and Blake Perkins took some time at Autumn Oaks to talk these dogs and their accomplishments. Chuck started squirrel hunting in the late 80's and bought Jukebox a few years later. Jukebox started the World Champion streak by winning 10 himself. In this special episode recorded at Autumn Oaks, I am joined by Cheyenne Cummings, Tyler Compton, Tim Deck, and last but certainly not least Austin Deck joins me as my co-host for this episode. Cheyenne has had this line for quite awhile and has put a lot of time into it. He is a hard hunter and part of his success is the team of people that hunt dogs out of his line. It took a little while to get this one lined up but I caught up with Eddie O'Dell. Eddie got into squirrel hunting to stay active after an injury left him unable to coon hunt. He had a rough start but finally stumbled upon a dog named Cool Whip, and the rest is history. Cool Whip has quite the resume that Eddie tells us about. While he has certainly proven himself in the woods he has also proven himself in the stud pen as well.
I'm not sure how I stumbled upon Luke on Instagram but I'm certainly glad I did. Today's guest Luke Houser is a coyote hunter but I didn't have him on because he uses a combination of scent and sight hounds. I had him on because of his incredible hound inspired art work. Luke is a welder by trade but in a short time has become a very talented portrait artist, engraver, and silversmith. Amy is a busy woman and was hard to pin down but once I was finally able to we had a great conversation about Treeing Curs and her family's line of them. They have had these dogs for 40 years and she is still continuing the breed them to this day. While we have focused on a lot of big game lately Amy has been a coon and squirrel hunter all her life but the Amazing line has had some success in the big game world as well.

After talking to Dan in episode 27 I wanted to dive into more cat hunting with Mountain Curs. Perry Elliott and his Wyoming Mountain Curs was a name I had seen numerous times over the years so I reached out and he did not disappoint. We talked about how he switched from hounds to mountain curs and how his dogs have performed for him over the last 20 years. Curt Ladner joins me and explains how breeding the Ladner Blackmouth Cur has not only been passed down from his father and grandfather but goes back even further. We also talk about the versatility of the breed but how breeding tree dogs has always remained a priority. As always we have a few good hunting stories thrown in there as well.
I recently saw someone post a video of their Faulkner Curs on facebook and it led me down a path to Steve Block. Steve is the longtime friend and hunting buddy of the founder Gary Faulkner. In March I was able to attend the Leopard Cur hunt and catch up with Bill and a few others as we talked mainly about what are known as midwest bred leopards. Bill has been involved with the Leopard breed since the late 1970's. Unfortunately had to cut this one a little short due to the events going on at the hunt. I'll have to get Bill on again to talk more about his long history with the breed.
In this episode I sat down with longtime family friend Terry Sullivan, his son in-law Blake Ambrose, and their friend Burgess Wills. These guys are all members of Orbit Hunt Club in Isle of Wight county Virginia. These guys were hard to get talking but had a few good stories and some good information about deer hunting with dogs.
Derril talks about getting into hounds and hunting with some well-known dry-ground lion hunters. How those friendships helped him into his lifelong career as a government hunter. Derril then explains how the versatility of his Kemmer’s has enabled him to use the same dogs on various types of game. For someone that said he had nothing to say it was a great conversation that went from reminiscing about the old days to breeding a line of dogs.
In this episode, I sit down with Charlie and Rehan from Garmin. They tell me about some of the history and evolution of the dog tracking and training products.
