In this week's episode I am joined by Mike Sheppard. Starting out Mike trapped in his early youth but quickly relized he wanted to coon hunt to increase his fur harvest. Following the advice of a local Bluetick man, he went stright to Dave Dean to get a Hammer bred Bluetick. After that he was hooked. While he did his fair share of winning Piazon shined in the stud pen and his currently sitting at 9th on the historical reproducers list. Mike is hopefull to have a Piazon puppy in the future that will be as good as some of the other top hounds out if him.

In this week's episode I am joined by Aidan Anderson. Aidan plays professional baseball for the Texas Rangers organization. This is not the normal 9-5 that most of us have. It takes a lot of family support to keep hounds and keep them in the woods. During the off season Aidan hits the woods hard, often hunting with his family. He has 2 brothers, a sister, multiple nieces and nephews, and of course his dad that all hunt as well. They have even started a lifestyle brand called Coon Branch Outdoors. CBO is rooted in faith, family and the outdoors.

In this week's episode I am joined by Owen Brayson. Owen had a humble beginning with a neighborhood squirrel dog that turned into so much more many years later. Even when he went looking to get into squirrel dogs he stumbled a bit and was finally given some direction that put him on the right path. That path was a River Run Feist, and Dutchess was her name. She was the start of many successful years in the squirrel dog business. Unfortunatly Hurricane Katrina made squirrel hunting almost impossible and Owen was forced to get rid of his beloved squirrel dogs. Luckily he was able to pick up without missing a beat when he retired and is back at it once again. He is even hosting a number of UKC Squirrel Hunts.

In this episode, Darren Petty joins us once again. He is settling in after his long journey to Sweden and back. Darren and I had talked about this trip a few times while he was planning it and I told him I definitely wanted to hear about it. Darren went over and stayed with former Tree Talkin Time guest Erik Rohdin. Erik planned some pretty epic adventures for the two of them and there wasn't a lot of downtime other than driving from place to place. What would be a once in a lifetime trip for most will most certainly not be for Darren as he is already planning his next trip.

John talks about how he got started coon hunting "just by chance" and has stuck with it for 50 or maybe it's 51 years now.

In this week's episode I am joined by TJ Bolin. I met TJ at Autumn Oaks and breifly learned about his female redbone Penny. Penny had won her cast in the Dual Champions hunt and won the Redbone breed in the show. After having him on I learned a lot more about redbones and the people that hunt them. TJ is quick to give credit to others that have helped him along the way. He has owned, bred, and hunted some top redbones and I can't help but think that is because of how genuine he is.

While waiting for casts to get back on Saturday night/Sunday morning at Black and Tan days Chris Nidy sat down with me to pass the time. We talked about how Chris went from showing Black and Tans and other dogs at AKC dog shows to getting into the nite hunts and eventually finding himself as president of the American Black & Tan Association. Chris had an important message about service and all the work it takes to run an association and hold large events. We all need to step up to help our asssociations, and clubs to continue so todays youth may one day be able to take them over. We had a few interuptions along the way as casts were rolling in and had to cut it a little short but it was a great conversation that we can all learn something from.

In this week's episode I am joined by retired Pennsylvania game warden Rod Burns. Rod was a long time coon hunter that became a game warden later in life. The job took him away from his passion of running hounds but when retirement came around he was quick to get a pair of pups and pick up right where he left off. In this episode we talk about a few of Rod's wildest and most memorable moments on the job, as well as the differences in coonhunting from when he stopped to recently picking back up. Towards the end of our conversation we speak about the recent political battle we just had here in PA. Luckily we were able to get our point across to a handful of Senators but this is just a warning that we need to be organized and prepared for these types of attacks.

Now they have beagles and one retired Treeing Walker. While we didn't talk much about the business, they offer great briar proof clothing that they hand make. In this week's episode I am joined by father/son duo Greg and Josiah Pulling. Greg and his brother Jim were on the podcast a few years ago. Once again I caught up with them at the Great American Outdoor Show to record this episode. On the way to the show I was listening to Bear Siragusa's podcast The Hunting Hound as he talked about being a father and a houndsman. This made me want to get the input of this father/son duo on the matter. I thought Greg being an accomplished houndsman and Josiah being a budding houndsman that has been immersed in this way of life since he was only in diapers would both have a good perspective on the matter.

In this week's episode I am joined by my son Charlie to talk about the recent bear hunt he went on with Tree Talkin' Time Legend Uncle Wayne. Charlie is a bit shy so his part was a little short. With this being the 2 year anniversary of the podcast I thought it was fitting to go back and listen to Uncle Wayne's episode 64 Years a Bear Hunter. Make sure you listen to the end for the details on the contest. Here are the trivia questions:

  1. Whose Secret Family Recipe is it?
  2. What year did Chuck Gaietto purchase Jukebox?
  3. What is the month and year that the "Legends" were featured on the cover of Full Cry?
  4. Where was Mark Booth when he had the idea for Southern Hound Hunting Magazine?
  5. What is the name of the oldest guest (90 years old) to come on the podcast?

Wow, 100 Episodes! For this special episode, I asked Mark Zepp to come on and talk about his incredible career and journey in the Outdoor Industry. I wanted to know more about the guys and how they got their start hunting as well as a few stories like always. They didn't disappoint either.

Richard was a self taught geneticist that shared his knowledge with the readers of Full Cry for many years. He also applied this knowledge in breeding American Leopard Curs, Camus Curs, and Old Time Farm Shepherds. The success he found with these different breeds was through his active promotion in the pages of Full Cry every month. Rick gives us a little peak into the life of J. Richard McDuffie.

In this week's episode I am joined by Shawn O'Neil. While Shawn is a die-hard coyote hunter I wanted to dig into his past. Before moving to Idaho he had a small pack of Mountain Curs that he hunted on bears. This pack in a short amount of time treed hundreds of bears. Shawn did this all while hunting on foot. Shawn has more experience with working dogs of various breeds than almost anyone I have ever talked to and we barely scratched the surface into his experience in this episode.

It all started with a picture of a Full Cry cover from January 2003. The Legends of the squirrel dog world all in one photo. Today's guest Allen Reeves was one of the men in that photo. HE was well known for writing the article about the Camus Curs. A breed that is no longer around today but Allen and I dive into the history and their hunting style.

This weeks guest needs no introduction if you are familiar with the OMCBA. Merle Seeley has been following these little cur dogs for around 20 years and has made a huge impact on the breed. He has owned, trained, and hunted some of the best competition squirrel dogs known within the breed. His goal when he gets a young dog doing well is to win the Jr World Hunt. He has done this 9 times and I am sure he's not done.

I was finally able to corner my buddy Mick into coming on the podcast this week. I have known Mick for a 6 or 7 years through various social media and forums. Mick is originally from England and has an impressive resume of hunting all across Europe but is now over on this side of the pond in Canada. When he got here pursuing bobcats became his new obsession, and with that came tree dogs. Mick wanted the old style versatile curs that have almost been forgotten about. So while he had some luck with his Leopard Cur Ruby, he tried something a little different as well. Now on his third generation it seems to be working so make sure you listen about Mick's bearded bobcat, coon, squirrel, upland, and waterfowl dogs!

In this weeks episode I went back to my old neighbors that laid my foundation for hunting. I lived next to Charlie and Anne Thorpe for about 3 years growing up. Charlie had 2 English Pointers, a couple of English Pointer puppies and a pair a Beagles when I moved in and I was instantly hooked. It only got better when I saw their taxidermy collection throughout their house. I went and caught up with them, reminisced, and learned a little more about how they got started hunting.

This is not an episode of Tree Talkin' Time. This is a family project and it is here to make it easily accessible for everyone in our family. This is the story of two sisters Ruth and Nellie who grew up in the mountains of Tennessee and made their way to Pennsylvania to build lives side by side and eventually after both being widowed together again. Ruth was called home to be with the Lord in May 2022 not long after recording this. We love you Mommom and always will

I recently saw someone post a video of their Faulkner Curs on facebook and it led me down a path to Steve Block. Steve is the longtime friend and hunting buddy of the founder Gary Faulkner. Gary has turned over the reins to Steve in breeding his line of dogs and Steve did not disappoint in giving me an overview about the breed.

We are going to start a series over the next month or so and talk about some of the different cur breeds. I am going to feature founders, breeders, and/or promoters of these different breeds. In this episode I had Terrance come on and talk about his Treeing Tennessee Brindles. Terrance runs his dogs on a variety of game species with good success. I enjoyed a chance to learn about these little plott like dogs and hope to see a few go in the future!

In March I was able to attend the Leopard Cur hunt and catch up with Bill and a few others as we talked mainly about what are known as midwest bred leopards. Bill has been involved with the Leopard breed since the late 1970's. Unfortunately had to cut this one a little short due to the events going on at the hunt. I'll have to get Bill on again to talk more about his long history with the breed.

These guys are all members of Orbit Hunt Club in Isle of Wight county Virginia. These guys were hard to get talking but had a few good stories and some good information about deer hunting with dogs.

Derril talks about getting into hounds and hunting with some well-known dry-ground lion hunters. How those friendships helped him into his lifelong career as a government hunter. Derril then explains how the versatility of his Kemmer’s has enabled him to use the same dogs on various types of game. For someone that said he had nothing to say it was a great conversation that went from reminiscing about the old days to breeding a line of dogs.

Brian Messersmith is a houndsman that has been hooked since an early age. Thanks to a family member that had hounds, hunting big game with hounds has been a lifelong passion for this Idaho native. We talk about how Brian and I met and became friends, how a promising young lion hound can double as a coonhound, and a few exciting stories about chasing bears and mountain lions in northern Idaho. This episode is a little different in the fact that we don't really talk dogs but this is an app that I use and believe in. Brad is a an awesome guy who has built a social media app with the help of his co-founders from the ground up. We talk about Go Wild, social media, and the hunting industry. First link in the show notes is my personal account that you can then download the app from. The second link is to the article that Brad wrote and speaks about in the podcast.
