The College of Europe (Bruges) is starting a podcast series in which the college community will discuss different aspects of European Affairs and more. This podcast series is an opportunity to open the content of some of the conferences and discussions that happen in the College to the wider public and it will allow for wider participation in the discussion on the Future of Europe as well as creating the opportunity for all to listen to original episodes made by our students and our staff.

The topic of disinformation has become a constant in the current security discourse. With the boom in modern technologies and the rise of AI, coupled with the earlier shift that came with social media and online media platforms, a new urgency appeared as regards addressing the threat stemming from disinformation and foreign information manipulation and influence (FIMI) online. Markéta Šonková (IRD) talked about these issues with Kristína Šefčíková, a project manager at Prague Security Studies Institute, a Prague-based security-oriented think tank. Kristína specializes in disinformation, strategic communication, and foreign malign influence, with a specific focus on the area of Central and Eastern Europe. They discussed the rising risk of disinformation and misinformation, EU tools aimed at countering these threats, the role of AI, algorithms, and modern technologies, as well as resilience of democratic societies vis a vis these threats, including during the most recent European elections.

This international, non-profit association represents a wide range of firms in the computer, communications, and internet industries. Marine de Lassalle est professeure de sociologie politique à Sciences Po Strasbourg et directrice du laboratoire « Sociétés, acteurs et gouvernement en Europe » (SAGE, CNRS / Université de Strasbourg). Ses travaux de recherche portent sur les perceptions de l’Europe, sur la gouvernance de l’Union européenne et sur la compétence politique.
Sa réflexion s’appuie notamment sur les résultats d’une vaste enquête menées auprès d’électeurs européens et présentés dans son livre, publié en 2022, "Faire parler d'Europe. Voies et formats des rapports institués au politique". For this first episode, we will listen to a conference given by the European General Studies Programme in the framework of their Conference Series "Global Europe in the Real New Millenium. The EG interdisciplinary dialogue on European integration in the post-pandemic world". This conference series was set up by Prof. Didier Georgakakis, the European General Studies coordinator at the College of Europe.
The aim of the conference series is to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue with leading intellectuals on the future of European societies and potential changes currently occurring. Today, the global pandemic we have just experienced seems to represent a turning point that has been described as the new real millennium. The profound consequences of the pandemic, after a series of successive crises in the years 2000-2010, may represent a major turning point for European integration.
In this talk, Prof. Patrick Pasture, a History professor at KU Leuven & Prof. Wolfram Kaiser, Visiting professor at the College of Europe, will analyse what can history teach us about the current dynamics and potential future implications for European integration. The conference was entitled: “The empire that never was. A Global History perspective on European integration”.
