Qualifications Aren't Everything So many of us keep thinking that if we have the experience, we can automatically open all the doors we want, but it doesn’t work like that. Your career success has very little to do with your experience. Focusing solely on your performance, experience, and qualification in your work will not make you successful. If you are not seeing the career success you desire, it’s either because of a lack of clarity, confidence, or strategy. So many of us are not clear on what we want, and this makes it impossible to be confident in our pursuit or create a clear strategy that can get us where we want to be.
You cannot achieve something you are not clear on because if you don’t know what you want, you don’t know what to go after or what it’s going to take to achieve it.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares why your qualification and all your experiences mean nothing. Your experience does not hold as much weight in your career success as you think it does. Learn how to get clear on your skills, who you want to serve with your skill, and what the job needs to look like for you to be able to have the life that you want.
Tune in!
During this episode, you will learn about;
[00:00] Introduction to the show
[00:45] Today’s focus: Why Your Qualification Means Nothing
[02:05] Why you should stop focusing on your performance to be successful
[02:43] Three factors that undermine success, clarity, confidence and strategy
[03:23] Getting clear on what you want in your career
[05:50] How confidence holds you back from your career success
[07:38] Being strategic and intentional about what you want and working backward
[09:39] Action and advocating: Working towards what you want and asking for it
[12:28] Being self-aware and holding ourselves accountable
[13:25] Working smart, not harder, soft skills vs. hard skills
[15:24] Surrounding yourself with the right people
[17:46] How to stop giving your power over to other people
[20:27] A quick recap of the show
[21:37] Ending the show and call to action
Notable Quotes * Your career success is dependent on clarity, confidence, and strategy * As you change, the plan that you’ve for your career needs to change * If you are not clear on where you are heading and what it’s that you want out of your career, you won’t see the success that you want. * You’re not going to get to the next level just because you think you deserve it; you can’t feel entitled to something if you’re not doing the work it takes. * We’re so focused on the hard skills that we forget about the soft skills we lack, which are keeping us from the jobs we want. * The more you advance and move up, the less it’s about hard skills and the more it’s about soft skills. * It doesn’t matter how many jobs you have; you can’t run away from you. * The baseline of your career success is your personal development; personal development leads to your professional development, which then leads to career development.

What To Do When You Feel Stuck in Your Career When we feel like we want more, but we’re not sure what it’s that we want, it’s important to take time to reflect and ask yourself the right questions. Even in moments when we feel stuck and like we’ve no choice, there are still action steps that we can take to get ourselves unstuck. Defining what being stuck means for us and identifying where the feeling comes from can help us identify what is fueling it. Whether it’s from boredom at work, not making enough money, lack of fulfillment, or our work environment, we can change how we serve with our skills. However, sometimes, feeling stuck has nothing to do with our careers but our personal life. When we’re experiencing hardships in our marriage, friendship, parenting, or just with ourselves, it can show up in our careers. Thinking through all these areas and having a solid Why can help us make the right changes that are not fueled by the wrong things.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares about what to do and the best thing to do when you feel stuck in your career. There are so many steps to take to get yourself unstuck, but you have to think through your situation to identify the right next thing for you and your career, depending on where you are.
Tune in!

[01:22] Define what being stuck means for you
[02:37] Identify if it’s just a season that you are in and have a solid Why
[04:58] Determine if you’ve been proactive in your career as you should be

[14:34] What does next look like for you and what needs to happen
[18:21] A quick recap of the show
[19:43] Ending the show and call to action
Notable Quotes * If you want to make a change in your career, make sure it’s being fueled by the right things. * Change is not just finding a new job; sometimes, you may need to change how you show up at work. * Sometimes, when you feel stuck, it’s a sign that it’s time for a new job. * You’ve to realize that every job is not a job that you work for the rest of your life; start getting comfortable with the idea that you might not be there long. * You start feeling stuck when you feel like you’ve no other job opportunities and your job is all you got, but that is not the case. * When you say I’m stuck, you’re saying that for a reason, and you’re feeling that for a reason; if where you’re is not right, what does right look like for you * It’s the action that changes your situation, It’s not the thoughts or saying a hopper wish, it is taking the first step. * You need to acknowledge your emotions but don’t make a decision out of how you feel; how you feel all the time is not real. * You know what to do; it’s just that you don’t ask yourself the right things

How to be confident in your career Confidence is the number one thing that a lot of people struggle with. In fact, most of us are actually being held back not by our skills or experience but by how we think about ourselves. Being more confident is not about being better than your colleagues. It’s all about knowing your role, why you are there and how you go there. A lot of insecurities we go through in our careers are based upon things and assumptions that are not even true and, most of the time, have nothing to do with our careers. Understanding your insecurities, role, and why you are will enable you to see your value and help you stop downplaying yourself.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares how you can be confident in your career and work. Confidence comes from within, and the most important thing you can do is work on yourself and build your inner confidence. No amount of money or title will change how you feel about yourself. Learn how to be confident in your career. Tune in!
During this episode, you will learn about;
[00:00] Introduction to the show
[00:48] Today’s Topic: How to be confident in your career
[01:03] Ways to be more confident in your career or work
[01:15] Know the role you play
[01:56] How you should deal with your insecurities
[04:27] Stop tying your performance to your confidence
[07:50] Set goals and accomplish them
[10:25] Check your lanes
[11:46] Be your own personal cheerleader
[14:49] Learn how your personality is affecting your career
[15:19] Ending the show and call to action
Notable Quotes * Knowing that role you play is knowing why and how you got there. * You can only go as far in your career as you have grown personally * You need to become the person you need to be that will be able to sustain the level of success that you want. * A lot of times, you don't see success in your career when there are so many areas you need to grow. * Sometimes you will be unable to give 100%, and that is okay: normalize seasons of rest and growth. * Even in your off-seasons, you're still great because your identity is not attached to what you do at work. * Setting goals and achieving them gives you an extra confidence boost * If you don't remember your wins and the impact in your off-seasons, you'll feel like a complete loser. * Sometimes people will stop cheering you on, not because you stop being great but because they are busy. * Confidence comes from within; having a certain title or amount of money is not going to change how you feel about yourself.

Dangers of Staying in Your Job Too Long We are living in times where we can’t afford to get so comfortable anymore, and this fact forces us to change our way of thinking. So many are afraid of being job hoppers, but being a job holder for so many years doesn’t make you a hero, especially when a job is not serving you. When you stay in a job because of the pay or are afraid to hop, you get hurt. Don’t break your neck in a job that you don’t enjoy because of fear. It’s not worth it! Staying in a company for so long not only dries your skillset, stagnates your income, and lowers your ability to look for opportunities but also makes the company feel like they are your only option.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares some of the dangers of staying in a job for too long and how you can assess the urgency you need to have or not have to leave a company. You only got one Life to Live, so you have to make sure it's lived on your terms. Tune in!

[04:35] Some of the dangers of staying in a company for too long

[10:06] How long is too long to stay in a company
[11:26] Why the value of your skillset is the core of everything
[14:41] A different perspective on asking for a raise.
Notable Quotes * You only got one Life to Live, so you have to make sure it's lived on your terms. * Don’t break your neck in a job you don’t enjoy to afford a lifestyle you don’t need. * Your salary is linked to your skillset; once your skillset starts drying up, your salary also starts drying up. * When you get so comfortable in a job and then experience change, it can make you feel lost. * Nothing is permanent; you can't get so comfortable because anything can happen to you. * You can be seen as dependable, but don't let your company feel like they are your only option. * It is not about when you should leave your job but about what it is costing you to stay. * When you start thinking about what it is costing you to stay in your job, you will see the urgency that you need to have or not have to leave it. * If you don't know the value of your skill set, you leave yourself open to being underpaid.

How to advance in your career Many people think that to move up the career ladder, they have to work for long hours or say yes to every assignment. What ends up happening is the complete opposite. They get stuck and don’t advance. There is no one way or path to advancing your career, but whatever strategy is used, it should be done on your terms. However, so many of us take too long to advocate for ourselves that by the time we realize it, we are exhausted and burned out from spending so much time overworking ourselves and still in the same place. Career advancement is all about advocating for yourself, not overworking to prove yourself. So many overwork themselves because they do not understand their role in your company's success. Second-guessing yourself, not trusting your skillset, and putting unnecessary pressure on yourself will set you back so far.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares how you can advance your career on your own terms without overworking yourself. Learn how to identify what you want, have the conversations, and work on those beliefs that make you feel unworthy and like you need so much more to prove to advance your career when you have more than enough.
Tune in!
During this episode, you will learn about;
[00:00] Introduction to the show
[00:47] Today’s Topic: How to advance your career without overworking yourself
[01:10] Advocate for yourself, not overworking yourself
[01:52] Being a woman and being in corporate America
[06:42] Stop feeling like you need to prove yourself
[08:01] Put your employer in their proper place
[10:04] Purpose to Paid: Strategic career advancement
[11:23] Be self-aware and set the terms
[12:31] Take inventory of the success you brought forth
[13:24] Get clear on what you want to advance to
[15:00] Start having the conversations and do the ask
[18:35] Why do so many of us overwork ourselves
[18:58] A quick recap on how to be confidence
Notable Quotes * When it comes to career advancement, it is all about advocating for yourself, not overworking yourself. * A lot of women don't want to come out aggressive, so they do the exact opposite and don't say anything at all. * When you're thinking of advancing in your career, there is no one way or path, but it is important that it is done on your terms. * Your career needs to be in your control, set the terms, and decide what you will and will not accept. * Self-advocacy is not confrontation. * The relationship between you and your employer is a partnership, not a dictatorship, so the agreement you have, needs to be beneficial to both sides. * Your employer decided for you to be there, but you can decide when it’s time to leave. * Putting your employer in their proper place will save you so much stress down the road. * If you don't know what you want, it is hard to stay away from what you don’t want. * Have a conversation with yourself first because you cannot convince anybody else that you deserve to move up if you have not convinced yourself first.

Quiet Quitting Do you think quiet quitting is a great career-building strategy? Quiet quitting is all about not doing the work that you are not paid to do to get more control over what you do and your time. Using quiet quitting as a strategy to build a successful career is the bare minimum, and it will not take you so far. It sets your boundaries too low without clear expectations and shows a lack of ability or power to set word boundaries. Setting boundaries at work on receiving extra assignments is not a high aim. Setting clear boundaries and speaking up allows you to set expectations and helps people to know where to draw the line. Don’t assume that people can read your mind and know your expectations. Set your boundaries and communicate them to protect your space.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares about quiet quitting, why it is not a great career strategy, and steps you can take to create clear boundaries around work to protect your space. A boundary is not something you put out of the sky. You need to know the boundary you need and why you want to put it in place.
During this episode, you will learn about;
[00:00] Introduction to the show
[00:58] Today’s topic: Quiet Quitting
[01:16] The quiet quitting trend and how it set low expectations
[03:55] Setting boundaries at work and how it looks like
[04:37] How to set and protect your boundaries
[05:03] Know what boundaries you want to put in place
[06:11] Assessing your personal boundaries
[07:00] Communicate your boundaries effectively
[09:04] Working and engaging with different personalities
[11:36] Create boundaries with other people in mind
[14:15] How to speak up and confront when you feel overworked
[16:51] Learning how to say no
[20:04] Recap of the show
Notable Quotes * You cannot get mad at somebody for not honoring a boundary they know nothing about. * A boundary is not something you pull out of the sky. You need to know why you want to put it in place. * In the same breath that you're telling somebody what you don't like, you need to tell them what you like them to do. * Just because somebody is doing something you don't like doesn't mean they're doing something wrong. * Simply asking questions is a way to confront something when you are afraid; When you ask questions, they will know it is not acceptable.

Fear of Success When thinking of fear in our career, the first thing that always pops up is fear of failure, but more often than not, so many of us are scared that we may get the success we want. People don’t talk about fear of success, but it is much more common than we think and often leads to self-sabotage. There are many reasons we fear success; in most cases, it is steered by our experience with what we have seen successful people do. When we focus on what we think success will do for us, it’s easy to think we are going to crush, be stressed, and lose it. Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares about the fear of success, what it looks like, and how you can overcome it. Realizing that success is about serving others more than ourselves is key to overcoming the fear of success.

How To Get Promoted on Your Terms We all want to be promoted on our own terms but striving to be irreplaceable in your company will not help you achieve your goal. When people strive to be irreplaceable, they don't have boundaries, or clear expectations, overwork themselves and become pleasers. When your company feels like nobody else can do the job like you, they don't see you for other positions except that. Striving to be irreplaceable and overworking yourself does not work in your favor. It only makes you a permanent fixture for your position, and they will not see you doing something else outside what you are breaking your neck for. Getting promoted is not about hard work. It’s about documenting every success, impact, and process that you have streamlined to help you see the growth in your skills, what you are capable of, and how you can get promoted and then ask for it.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares more about how you can get promoted on your terms. Don’t downplay yourself. Stop looking for reasons to stay stuck. Reframe the story you told yourself to focus on the opportunities and move ahead.
During this episode, you will learn about;
[00:00] Introduction to the show
[00:56] Today’s topic: How do you get promoted on your terms
[01:23] Don’t strive to be irreplaceable or indispensable
[03:41] Document success, skills, and the impact you are making in your career
[07:01] Take charge and be vocal about what it’s that you want
[08:47] Be intentional and strategic from the beginning
[12:04] Why you need to go on 1 to 2 job interviews a year
[14:34] Personal and professional development
[19:28] Stop making excuses and take ownership to make a move
[21:04] The mission of PurposeToPaid (P2P) in your career
[21:55] Recap of the show
Notable Quotes * When your company feels like nobody else can do the job like you, they don't see you for any other positions except that. * You don't get what you deserve; you get what you ask for * Put yourself in spaces that you want to be in to be seen, heard, and noticed * Taking small steps will eventually get you to where you want to be rather than not doing anything. * There’s always room for growth; If you're not growing as a person, it will hurt you professionally, and if you're not growing professionally, it will hurt you as a person. * You will only go as far as you are developed. * Where there are excuses, there is a lack of ownership and accountability * Change your mindset before you can make a change in your career; how you think about things will affect how you approach them.

Dump Your Degree With Dr. Zakiya Akerele Many things shape our career paths as we grow, but our parents are often the main player in the game. Sometimes even with the best intentions, they can mislead you into pursuing something they think is great without knowing what is ahead for you. So many of us, even after realizing that we are on the wrong career path or in the wrong jobs, find it hard to pivot and make the right choices for ourselves and our future.
We feel guilty about the efforts, time, and resources, making it impossible to choose something different. You can change your mind anytime, and you don't have to feel stuck. Just because you have a degree or have done it for so long doesn’t mean you have to stay even when it’s killing you from within.
Join the conversation with Dr. Zakiya Akerele as she shares about her book, Dump Your Degree and her career journey that inspired her to write it to help you repurpose your education, control your career, and gain financial freedom. Dr. Zakiya is an educator, speaker, and full-time author, and she helps people take control of their careers.
During this episode, you will learn about;

[02:10] A bit about Dr. Zakaya's career background
[03:12] What inspired Dr. Zakaya to write the work
[06:52] Insecurities that Dr. Zakaya faced when writing her book
[11:49] Chapter 1, why Dr. Zakaya talks ‘Don’t Listen to Your Parents
[16:15] Who are they, Chapter 2: Don’t Listen to ‘They.’
[21:14] The goal of Chapter 6 – Change Your Mind
[24:24] The value of a degree now versus years ago
[26:19] Questions to ask before going back to school for a degree
[28:49] Going back to school for self-validation
[30:29] Doing the self-work and saving yourself money
[31:43] Where to find Zakaya's book
[32:05] How to reach out, connect or learn more about Zakaya
[32:37] What next for Zakaya on her career path
Notable Quotes * Even though your parents are well-intentioned and want the best for you, they still may not know what is best for you. * You can change your mind anytime; don't feel like because you have done something for so long, you have to stay. * At any time, be open to changing your mind and pivoting in your career, and make yourself happy by doing something you enjoy * If going back to school will not benefit you holistically in the long run, don't do it. * Things on the outside will not make you feel good on the inside; you have to work from within * If the reason behind what you are doing doesn't have a deep root in you, it won’t last.

Career Success Doesn't Come From Hard Work So many of us break our legs taking on additional work that is even outside our pay grade, thinking that if we work hard enough, we will get where we want to be. This is just not the case. Going hard and expecting a reward is not the way to advance your career. It will lead to being played, burnout, disappointment, and frustration.
If you’re working in corporate, there is a game, and you need to know it to thrive. Your company and employer are looking for their interest first, not yours. If you are already willing to work ten times as hard for the same pay you had 5 years ago, they will not offer you more. So, spend more time advocating for yourself instead of looking for more work that you can do.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares how hard work and taking on more work to advance your career doesn’t work. She also shares practical tools and strategies to help you advance your career, personal development and advocating for yourself.

Who You Are Vs. What You Do For so many of us, our entire worth, self-image, and life is based on what we do for other people, and this can be disappointing, especially when we are never doing enough. We often spend a lot of time around our careers, and when we frame our identities around what we do for others, we start to lose the perception of who we really are. Don’t get caught up in your job title. It’s temporary and will not make you successful. Understanding who you are and what you do are two separate entities, and bringing your authentic self into your job environment is what makes success worth achieving.
Join the conversation with your host, Alicia Perkins, as she shares how you can separate your identity from your career and cultivate a successful life outside your job title. You do not exist to serve your job. Your job should be serving you. Take control!
Tune in!
During this episode, you will learn about;

The Guilt of Wanting More Out of Your Career In this episode, I share the importance of advancing your career and taking that bold step toward the next level. Most people get stuck in their jobs because they are tied to the success of the people that they work for and the teams they work with.
As a result, they end up forgetting about their own success. This is damaging! I also discuss why you should have a mindset shift and start pursuing your goals without feeling guilty about betraying your company. Tune in to listen to this and much more!
Key Highlights [01:03] Guilt of career advancement
[7:28] Feeling loyal to the company
[8:45] Stress Level vs. Pay Level
[9:13] Guilt is common with a lot of people
[13:23] Loyalty to yourself first, then to the company
[15:55] Setting boundaries for your company
[19:42] Learning how to move on
Notable Quotes * I don't think that every job we have is going to be our forever job. I think some jobs are just stepping stones to something more. * When you get so tied to the success of the people that you work for, you forget about your own success. * All of that “stay with your job until you die” is outdated advice, and that's going to hurt you. * If your company does not give you the opportunity to not only increase your pay but increase your skill set that is damaging. * As the job market grows, your skill set has to grow. * Most people don't take their growth into their own hands. They're only waiting for opportunities at their job. * Be more loyal to yourself than to your company. * It is not your responsibility to sacrifice your life for the sake of the company. * When you attach who you are to what you do, it makes it harder to leave. * Sometimes you got to move on in order to move up.

My Career Principles Don't find a job. Find a manager. It’s not the job title that matters but who you work for. Are your values aligned with your values and goals? Is it somewhere you can comfortably fit in and work towards your dreams?
In this episode, I share some of my career philosophies. Although I have not been in my career for a long time, with my experience in HR, I have some valuable career philosophies you shouldn't miss out on.
In the session, I dive deep into why who you work for matters more than the job title, ensuring your values align with your recruiter and embracing that your career path doesn’t have to be perfect.

●If you’re in a place that doesn’t align with what you align with, it will be draining.
●When you start to think of who you want to work for versus what you want to do, you keep yourself in a position where you can go after what you want and not just what’s available.
●Find a manager, not a job.
●If you start to advocate for yourself, you will see your career move a lot faster.
●The way to ensure you get the most out of something is to ask.

Why Do We Stay in Jobs We Hate When we hate our jobs, work seems to go on forever. We procrastinate, make excuses and blame external factors that are “getting in the way” of seeing things through. But a job doesn't have to be a source of misery.
In this episode, I will discuss an issue affecting many people, why they stay in a job they hate. Most people's career choices are affected by the people that surround them. The fear of being wrong and being tied to a check or job title may be another reason why people don't quit.
Having a career plan will help you make a move and take a risk that might be worth it.

[06:32] How job title and money will tie someone to a job they hate

● Always put your needs before the needs of the people that you work with.
● The longer that you stay, the harder it is to leave.
● The longer you have to wait for something, the less of a chance it is going to improve.
