Daniel Mendoza was Born in 1765 to Sephardi parents, in a Jewish section of London called Whitechapel. Dropping out of school at 13, Daniel Mendoza became a professional fighter at 18 beating several formidable opponents. He fought 3 legendary bouts with The Gentleman Richard Humphries, taking the better of 2, which led to the first recorded instance of trash talk in the press. In 1794, he defeated Bill Barr to gain the title of All England Bareknuckle Champion. His popularity gained him an audience with King George the III - possibly making, Mendoza the first Jew to meet with the king. Mendoza would relinquish his title a little less than a year later only after losing all his money and spending time in 18th century White collar jail. Though he died destitute in 1836, he changed the sport forever. The Light of Israel fought as a proud Jew and was an inspiration to his community, then and now.

Born in 1917, Jack Kirby would grow up to create Captain America, but as a youth, he roamed the streets of New York’s Lower East Side. Always a talented artist, he sought an escape through drawing and found his way to the famed Pratt Institute. There he was a student…for 7 days. The institute moved too slow for him, so dropped out and took a job drawing Popeye the Sailorman.
Over the next few years, worked various illustration jobs until joining Timely Comics, a precursor to Marvel, where he created Captain America. Drafted in ’43 to fight for the allies, his ability to draw led him to scout duty, where he snuck behind enemy lines to draw maps. In late ’44 because of frostbite, he was discharged, and following the war, he returned to the comic book world.
Working for both Marvel and DC he would go on to create or co-create the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, The Avengers, Groot, Silver Surfer, The Eternals to name a few. Passing away in 1994, Jack Kirby would never get to see his creations take over the big screen. This is the Story of Jack Kirby, Badass Jew!

Born in Romania in 1908, Vera Atkins Rosenberg’s father was a student of history and prepared her for the dangers he knew Jews would face. From a young age she served as secret operative, helping Jews escape pogroms in Eastern Europe. As World War II approached, she began work for the British eventually moving to London and helping lead a division of the Special Operations Executive. Throughout the war she organized and recruited operatives who would sabotage and disrupt German forces in France. Because she was such a great spy, we may never know all her contributions to the war effort, but what we do know is she was one Badass Jew! Check out Volume 3 for her story.

Born in Poland in 1893, Joseph Greenstein was dangerously premature which at this time was essentially a death sentence. To the doctors surprise, he survived infancy but grew a into a sickly child. At the age of 14, it was once again assumed his days were numbered, but a chance encounter with a carnival strongman led to a years of training on the road with the show. Returning home, he married the love of his life Leah, but was forced to leave after killing a polish soldier who had attacked other Jews. In America he travels to Texas where after being shot in the head and surviving he tangles with KKK. Over the years he continues his training and bending horseshoes with his bare hands, breaking chains with his chest, and holding back planes with his hair. His acts of strength are noticed by a Hollywood agent and is booked for the vaudeville circuit, performing all over the world. Later he retires for the stage to create organic health supplements and knock out American Nazis. Volume 2 of Badass Jews tells his story…

Born in Austria in 1833, August Bondi would join the ill-fated Austrian revolution at a young age, before fleeing the country in 1848. In the states, he learned of the evils of slavery firsthand, even finding himself lashing out in anger at an enslaved man. His loss of control led him to rethink who he was and understand how far he had strayed from the ideals of his youth. Though never a fan of slavery he immediately changed course becoming an outspoken Abolitionist and heading to Kansas to fight against slavery with John Brown. Volume 1 of Badass Jews tells his story…
