Who knew that an encounter with Slow and Low rock and rye could lead us to such a profound conversation about mental health? Whiskey lovers and mental health advocates, this episode is tailored for you. We dive into the fascinating history of this whiskey, based on an 1800s recipe known as Hochstadter, and we also get to explore the intriguing new Slow and Low Coffee old-fashioned that's making waves. The conversation isn't just about the booze, but the intricate tapestry of history and craftsmanship it represents.
Switching gears from savoring the perfect old fashioned, we tackle the sobering issue of mental health disparities among veterans. By shedding light on alarming statistics from reputable sources, we try to expose the inequalities that prevail between White and minority veterans. Our guest, a brave veteran herself, shares her personal journey of overcoming post-traumatic stress disorder. Her narrative is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, as she recounts her struggle in finding the right doctor, the importance of mental health advocacy, and the harsh reality of having to take control of her own healthcare.
As we wrap up, we take the time to share some valuable advice and resources that can be instrumental in anyone's recovery journey. Our guest emphasizes the significance of a positive support system and the necessity of taking things slow. She shares her story of confronting mental health challenges and how a dedicated therapist and a solid support system played a pivotal role in her journey. We conclude our conversation with an important reminder: be open, be honest, and remember, it's okay to be gentle with yourself. This is an episode that promises a flavorful journey into the world of whiskey and a poignant narrative of resilience and hope. Give it a listen.

In our glass is Slow & Low Rock and Rye Straight Rye Whiskey
This is 84 proof and retails for just over $21 at Spec’s for the 750 ml bottle.
Hochstadter's takes rye whiskey and flavors it ” strongly ” with orange and honey (plus a bit of lemon, grapefruit, and horeshound), then bottles the concoction along with plenty of rock candy syrup, which knocks the sweetness into the stratosphere. We sampled a bottle to see what the fuss was all about a century or so ago¦

In our glass: Pedernales 2021 Viognier Reserve
14.6% alcohol by volume. Retail $42. 2021 was a vintage to remember. The rainier growing season made for some challenges, which we mitigated with longer aging and using our 500L puncheon (2x size typical wine barrel). This Viognier has 40% of new French oak aging over a period of seven months.
The first stop was at Pedernales Cellars. We had a great visit with sommelier Brooke. She knew Dawn was a member and still gave us a full experience! During today's visit we learned why Pedernales Cellars named their rose "Over the Moon" It was in honor of how the founders met. Larry & Jeanine, David and Julie's parents, met when they were both hired to work on Apollo 11 mission from IBM. They were “moonstruck” in Houston.

Last stop in Fredericksburg was, The Rhinory
The main attraction is a rhinoceros part of proceeds are used to save rhinoceros in South Africa. It is a tasting room in pole barn with a patio outback and a view of the rhinoceros in the pastor.
Tasting room was very warm on the day we went Thermostat was 78. was busy but we were able to get a table without reservation pretty quickly on a Friday at 4:30. Our wine server was just ok, informative at the table but not attentive. We decided on one of two flights opting for the more expensive flight which was $50 a person, included five wines and a freebie to start with. They featured wines that are not Texan. Both reds and whites. We opted for the $50 tasting because it offered a Sauvignon blanc and Pinot Noir. Having these on the menu (our favorites) piqued our curiosity. The Sauvignon blanc was unique as it had a hint of jalapeño but other than that not too memorable. Service was not worth the tasting cost. We were left up to our own devices to uncover an explanation of rhino. The tasting room was medium-sized and warm probably due to all the windows. We definitely felt like we needed a fan or would have opted to sit outside. The rhinoceros was neat. He was active playing in the pasture. Overall, if it wasn’t for the rhinoceros, it would probably not be on our list to revisit, however if you would like to taste wines other than Texas wines, it may be a stop on yours is it in Fredericksburg. Neely, being an animal lover was drawn in.. but didn’t buy any wine other than tasting.

In today's episode, we tasted 3 different Cabernet Francs with a price point under $15. Two were from France and one was from Napa. We had a returned guest for this episode, V. Spoiler Alert, her Franc won the taste test. Set back, take some time and listen to us discuss the different Cabernet Francs by themselves, with pulled pork and with a cheddar ball rolled in bacon.
Domaine de Pallus Messanges Rouge Chinon 2020
Messanges is an old Loire Valley name for Cabernet Franc. A silky red, with a charming core of damson plum, black pepper and rosemary. The acidity here binds everything together, while the light tannins add a bit of firmness to the structure. Well-balanced and juicy, this would be great with food now. Drink now through 2028.
6 months in cement tank, 4,000 cases produced, abv is 12.50%, Price at HEB - $14.99
Michel Armand Chinon 2021
A vibrant cherry red with glints of violet. On the nose, a bouquet of black fruit and hints of spices. It Is good structure, with silky tannins at the core, surrounded by generous fruits and fresh acidity.
The winner of the blind taste test - bought by V
Cosentino The Franc from Lodi, California
Winemaker notes:
Aromatics of dusty chocolate, blueberry, and cedar. The palate is redolent of dark berries, lilac, roasted marshmallow, and a touch of anise. Velvety and juicy with supple mouthfeel, nice complexity, and a pleasant lingering finish.
Sophisticated tannins make this a great food wine; a perfect partner to Margherita pizza, cozy companion for chicken cacciatore or an appetizing side kick for an antipasto platter!
Excellent quality and vibrant character define Lodi’s 2020 vintage. The season got off to a slightly later start, with a delayed and slow bud break. The end of harvest found yields were down quite a bit across the region, with later-ripening varieties showing good concentration.

In our glass we have 14 Hands 2017 Rose and Becker 2021 Saignèe.
14 Hands Rosè
This Syrah-based Rosé opens with delicate aromas of rose petals and rhubarb. Refreshing flavors of melon and strawberries are followed closely by a kick of citrus in the finish. 13% ABV
https://www.14hands.com
Becker 2021 Saignee Rose
Saignée, or to bleed, is the method of collecting juice immediately after we crush red grapes. By utilizing the juice from the same grapes which produce our favorite red wines, fermenting as if a white wine - slow and cold - we are creating a bigger, bolder rosé with pronounced bright fruits and florals. The 2021 Saigné is a blend of Counoise, Cabernet Sauvingon, Tannat and Syrah, all of which mingle together, yielding a striking rose with a bright floral nose, citrus and watermelon on the palate.
Aromatics: Bright florals, pink rose petals, strawberry, raspberry fruits
On the Palate: Pomegranate, ripe strawberries, candy watermelon, bright acidity with a light fruit finish

In our glass today is POUILLY-FUISSÉ by Jadot.
Produced in the Mâconnais region of Burgundy, this famous wine is partially barrel fermented with 6 months of ageing in French oak casks. The judicious, subtle use of oak allows Louis Jadot’s Pouilly-Fuissé to retain its complexity and structure.
GRAPES:
100% Chardonnay
TASTE:
This wine has aromas of fresh red apples, honey and white flowers with elegant and rich flavors of toasted nuts and citrus. One of the purest expressions of this typical Burgundian grape.
PAIRINGS:
Roasted salmon, shellfish or creamy cheeses.
DISTINCTION:
Pouilly-Fuissé appellation epitomizes the top of the hierarchy of Mâconnais wines.
You can find information about this wine and Jadot's other offerings at https://lovejadot.com/In our sass, we are talking to middle school parents as well as parents of kids in the fifth grade. Take a listen to some of the things we have learned in our first half of parenting kids in the sixth grade. We talk about what we wish we knew before and little things that we had no clue would be our new truths.

In our glass today is Bruno by Karthäuserhof, Slate Reisling Spätlese. The wine is a homage to Bruno of Cologne, the founder of the Carthusian Order. On the facade of the former monastery which was built in 1335, Bruno is written in metal letters and accompanies us in our daily challenges: slate, steep vineyards, manual work. Enjoy this handcrafted wine in moderation. We deemed this tastes like an adult fruit cup
ABV is 8.5%, www.thegwc.com, it is imported by the German wine collection

Today in our glass is 19 Crimes, Cali Red. This is a collaboration with 19 Crimes and Snoop Dogg. We purchased this bottle at HEB for $10.29. This is a red blend that consists of 65% Petite Sirah, 30% Zinfandel, 5% Merlot. It is 14.1% alcohol by volume. We got black cherry, vanilla and blueberry pie. Our sass in today's episode, consisted of Dawn's birthday and Christmas gift shopping tips. She talks about fetch, https://rewards.onelink.me/vvv3/referraltext?code=3WX1G, Rakuten, https://rakuten.com/r/DAWNZO21, upside https://upside.app.link/DAWN8389 and amazon outlet. To get to the outlet in the search bar within Amazon, type in Amazon Outlet. When purchasing gifts, Dawn recommends you set yourself up a budget. Once you have figured out who you are shopping for and the dollar amount, divide that by 52 so you can set the money aside in savings. She also suggests that you organize your gifts in spots so that if you are getting something early you know where to find the purchase. If you have a person in your life that enjoys jewelry, she suggests getting on the Zales and Zales outlet mailing list and email list. They have several good sales throughout the year. Macy's is another company that you can sign up for their star rewards program and get notified of sales and good deals. Last Neely and Dawn talk about the Amazon wish list as well as using pinterest for a wishlist of things that can not be found on Amazon
Today in the glass, Dawn is drinking Enchanted Rock Peach Vodka and HEB 1877 Mango Mineral Water. The peaches used to make the Enchanted Rock Peach Vodka are from Fredericksburg. What's in our glass: Screaming Goat Gewurztaminer, vintage 2020 out of Monterey, CA. It is 12.64% alcohol and retails for 19.99/bottle through the Traveling Vineyard. (Renee is awesome)
Gewurztraminer is one of the 4 Alsace noble grapes. The others being Riesling, Pinot Gris and Muscat. Alsace is located between Germany and France. The grape s German but the style is French. The are has the sunniest and most reliable growing season weather of all France. This is because the Vosges Mountains shield it from storms. The word Gewurz translates to spicy and traminer means grape.
If you have a sweeter Gewurztraminer, it should be severed at 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit and a dry one at 50-55 degrees.
Today we are pairing it with white cheddar popcorn, bacon, salami, goat cheese, cream cheese and quince spread, cream cheese and pear spread and HEB wheat crisps. We read that spicy foods like Thai would go amazing with it.
The second wine we tasted was the Trimbach Gewurztraminer out of the Alsace region. It is 14% alcohol an retails for 23.99/bottle at HEB

The wine - Palaka Aloha Rosè 2021, Fox and the Flock Cellars, Napa, CA
https://macyswineshop.com/wine/2021-palaka-aloha-rose
Pop open a bottle of radiant summer sunshine with this light and effervescent 2021 Palaka Aloha Rosé. Glimmering pink hues delight in the glass, hinting at a zippy, fruity sipping experience. On the nose, vibrant notes of strawberry mingle with delightfully tart blood orange and fragrant acacia flowers. Subtle notes of citrus round out a pleasant, fruity drinking experience sure to best even the hottest of summer days.
This 2021 Palaka Aloha Rosé hails from California’s award-winning Central Valley, where a vast spectrum of enriched clay and sandy soils provide a brilliant backdrop for viticultural success. The reliable heat of brilliant, cloudless days is only matched by the cooling, temperate nights, extending the growing season and infusing each grape with unbelievable juiciness and sweetness.
Like many rosés, this Palaka Aloha fits right in with crunchy salads and lighter meat fare like a salade nicoise, creamy garlic hummus, blackened salmon, or spicy ahi tuna.
