The City of Tehachapi held their first Farmers Market of the summer on Thursday, June 2nd. The market is being coordinated by City Hall with logistical support from Public Works and the Police Department. In a statement, City Manager Greg Garrett said, “Come out, buy some fresh produce, enjoy the live music, and then stop by and grab dinner and a movie from one of our small businesses."
Gallery N Gifts will be presenting artwork by Anya Lathrop. Her upcoming show is titled “Horcruxes” and it’s a showcase of embroideries done on raw canvas. The pieces are depictions of books she holds near and dear, including science fiction stories and fairy tales.
Embroideries are a challenging medium as they are only made up of straight lines and knots. Colors can not be physically mixed like watercolors or oil paintings. Instead, the artist must layer colors in a way that blends the yarn into the desired color. Anya’s talents are not limited to canvas. While she is a painter and textile artist she is also a skilled musician, writer, and acts in our local theater.
You can visit Anya’s captivating exhibition during the month of June at Gallery N Gifts, located in Downtown Tehachapi.
The Friends of the Library held a tremendously successful Spring Book Sale on April 23rd. They raised over $2,500 which will go toward prizes for the library’s Summer Reading Challenge. With this amount of money, the library will be able to double if not triple the amount of prizes.
The Summer Reading Challenge will run from June 1 - July 31st and will have an official kickoff event on June 14th at 11am. All ages can participate and that does include adults as well, so log your books in Beanstack to earn your prizes.
While this is the last big sale of the Summer, you should keep an eye out for one or two “pop-up” sales during the summer which will be held in conjunction with a few of the Downtown Tehachapi Farmers Markets, but if you’re antsy to buy some books for a good cause, you can always go to the Library’s Downstairs Bookstore. The books are individually priced and all proceeds fund our library’s wonderful programs. Visit their website or walk in to find out more about their many excellent events!
