In this podcast, Nathan discusses the importance of The Three R's™: Respect, Respond, and Redirect™. Nathan helps us understand and address the underlying emotions driving disruptive behavior to effectively defuse conflicts.

Illustrated by an incident during a training session in New York City, Nathan explains how to effectively handle interruptions and conflicts in multiple settings, including work, family, and public interactions. By sharing a story where a participant's disruptive behavior was met with understanding and engagement rather than dismissal, the speaker highlights the importance of recognizing the underlying issues behind someone's behavior.

In this episode, I share personal reflections on my 40-year marriage journey with my wife, starting from our humble beginnings with no understanding of how to navigate life together, to celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. I recount the challenges we faced, including financial difficulties, the birth of our children, and the trials of raising a family, with a focus on the spontaneous and unpredictable nature of life. Despite the hardships, I highlight the importance of gratitude, growth, and the realization that life's meaning is shaped by our responses to experiences. Through the story, I talk about hope, resilience, and the endless potential for learning and becoming better, including an inspiring quote from Jordan Peterson. Ultimately, I encourages you to search for beauty and meaning in your own lives, recognizing the eternal nature of important, true, and real things.

This podcast delves into the profound impact stories have on individuals and societies, illustrating through historical and literary examples how narratives can inspire change, dictate perceptions, and influence actions. It discusses the effect of literature like Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War', the moral dilemmas in Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables', the deceptive tranquility in Nazi Germany during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and the motivational power of Thomas Paine's 'Common Sense' during the American Revolutionary War. I emphasize the dual nature of stories to both build and destroy, and urge listeners to consciously choose and curate the narratives they tell themselves and others. Highlighting the permanence of practiced thoughts and actions, I encourage you to focus on positive, virtuous, and noble ideas to to build the story that becomes a fulfilling life.

Revitalizing Relationships: Don't Let Your Bonds Become Stagnant

In this heartfelt talk, I share analogies that highlight the importance of keeping relationships fresh, just like spring water. I emphasize the concept of honoring the 'bids', or attempts at connection, from others, to encourage healthy progress in relationships. Stagnant water in a stream is akin to stagnant relationships and in this podcast, I underline the significance of 'emotional deposits' in ensuring the prosperous flow of relationships.

Happiness and Change, No Matter What Others Think: Confronting Self-Consciousness & Embracing Your Ability To Become

In this reflective talk, Nathan discusses the often subtle insecurities we carry about our appearances and how these thoughts can impact us. He deciphers how insecurity is common, and that the best way to confront it is by shifting our focus from how we look, to the value we provide to others. Nathan talks about the importance of dressing appropriately and the influence it has on our self-perception and performance. Additionally, he critiques an attitude of superiority based on appearances and encourages us to pursue the positive changes we can make in ourselves, whether it's related to appearance, fitness or attitude. In conclusion, Nathan empowers the viewers to retain their personal power, to be the person they aspire to be, and to not give away their power to others' opinions.

Podcast 77: Regret, Loneliness, and Good Things To Come

In this episode, Nathan discusses the experience of regret and provides a deeper exploration of the feelings that arise during the holiday season. He urges the listener to not dwell on past mistakes and instead embrace the learning opportunities they provide. Reinforcing this point, Nathan quotes John Greenleaf Whittier and Henry David Thoreau about regret. Nathan discusses the choices we make, and the importance of accepting responsibility for these choices to gain personal power and influence outcomes. He suggests that, instead of trying to erase past experiences, it is healthier and more fruitful to make those experiences meaningful. Nathan concludes with a reflection on the story of the baby prophesied by Isaiah, who grew to suffer for humanity, and offer hope and healing. He encourages listeners to look forward with faith, learning from past mistakes, and celebrate hope this Christmas.

In this episode, Nathan reminisces about his idyllic farm life during his childhood. The narrative takes an emotional turn as he shares the traumatic story of the death of their pet dog while operating farm machinery. This event leads Nathan to discuss the delicate balance between shielding one’s loved ones from pain versus allowing them to learn from difficult experiences. He uses the example of Corrie Ten Boom, a famous Holocaust survivor, to enhance this point. Nathan closes the podcast by emphasizing the importance of love as a guiding force in processing, understanding and transcending past suffering.

Our memories are built on stories. Unfortunately, some of our stories are "anger stories," and in them is a very unhealthy share of negative emotion.

If you were unfairly treated by someone else, or bullied or abused--- if they did things that made you angry, if you felt ignored or oppressed in some way, and you tell that story and the anger is present in the story, guess what it does to the person who offended you? Nothing. It doesn't make them "un-offend" you. If they are still living, it's unlikely to make them run to you and say, "Hey, I just had a feeling I should apologize for bullying you in second grade. By the way, I don't remember who you are anymore, and I live in another state." If they're not living, you certainly can't change anything about their current state. You can't go back and say, "You need to make this 'un-happen.'. You made me really angry. You made me really sad. You made me feel unloved, rejected, ignored, mistreated"--- fill in the blanks.

Harboring and telling "anger stories" is like reaching into a bag full of rattlesnakes. All of the poison gets injected into you as you retell the story. You replenish the poison, and you put the snake back in the bag--- this time a little fatter and a little more poisonous than it was the last time, and round and round and round it goes.

I'll help you change the stories.

All of us deal with anxiety or fear of some kind, and to some amount, for some period of time. As I was studying for NLP certification, I came across this: "Based on metaphysical thinking, there is only one real emotion on the planet--- love. All negative emotions are derivatives of fear." part of my work then is to help people be rid of fear, whether via NLP, or just by being a friend. Our fears can range from what someone said to me recently: "I'm feeling a little out of control," to something as extreme as in the Bible: Job 2 verse 9: "Then said his wife unto him, doest thou still retain thine integrity? Curse God and die." He was really going through some stuff and she was done with it.

Some of our fear takes the form of stage fright. Some is just regular old--- and I mean regular old, though it can be crippling--- anxiety. Some fear is well-founded and some is not. Most of it will put us in a state of fight or flight, and spending a lot of time there will destroy your body, your mind, and your relationships.

Anxiety / fear of any kind, and excitement, are almost physiologically identical. As far as your body is concerned. They're the same thing. So what's the difference? What makes one shut us down and the other one get us all jazzed about what's about to come? The answer is all in your head, literally.

Here are some things that will help you find excitement, in place of fear and anxiety.

Finding truth requires effort, not a patronizing pat on the head. Anything virtuous, lovely, of good report, or praiseworthy leads us toward truth. The opposites of those lead to untruth, to lies. It is a lie that our purpose on earth is to just skip happily through a rainbow world, picking flowers and having food handed to us, while our bodies remain healthy and strong and our friends all praise every single thing that comes out of our mouth. That's not reality.

It is truth to know that we are tested and tried by difficulty, trial, effort, faith, and perseverance. The most successful and happiest people you'll ever meet have experienced a lot of all of these. They give others the freedom to learn by similar experience, knowing that it is not their job to save them, but to love them, encourage them, and cheer for them when they go through difficulty of their own. If there is no absolute truth, then there is no absolute love. If there is no absolute love, there is no absolute answer.

I can help you find truth,  confidence,  relief, and hope for the future. Go to natewalkercoaching.com, click on the contacts page, and tell me how I might be of assistance. There are great things that you and I can do, and great tools that I have available to help you.

A couple of weeks ago we talked about the Sunk Cost fallacy. The more time and energy we put into a failing strategy, the more unwilling we are to give it up. That's the easiest definition.

Not long after that podcast aired, I got a question from a listener, who said something like, "yes, but how do you know? Where's the line and how do you decide? Couldn't staying the course actually be an act of courage?"

Hello, my friends. Shall we talk about how messed up humans are, including you? Humans are just weird. We have all these weird tricks that our minds play on us, and not one single one of us is ever immune to this kind of stuff. We have little mental shortcuts we take. We have funny little fallacies that we do, and I'm gonna talk to you about one of them today because I think it will be helpful.

I've had conversations with people, in the last week, who are all facing some version of this topic, and so I'm gonna give you a couple of examples and then tell you what it is.

I can remember being asked, "who are your heroes?" That question always produces some pretty interesting answers and some pretty varied ones.. You'll get all kinds of stuff. You'll get sports heroes. You'll get military heroes. You'll get, characters from mythology. You'll get scriptural heroes. You'll get heroes from history, all kinds of heroes. And you can ask what the qualities are and you'll get all kinds of answers. Some heroes are worth the title; some, not so much. I

So who are the real heroes? In a world gone insane, I can think of nothing more heroic than a man who is willing to say, "okay, I'm in. I'll do it. I'll marry someone. I'll start a family. I'll miss sleep. I'll try to be patient. I'll teach my children. I'll honor my wife. I'll provide for them all, protect them all, watch them grow, help them through heartaches and challenges. I'll be disrespected. I'll be worshiped. I'll be tired. I'll be elated. I will suffer. I will pray, and I'll work myself to the bone for 50 or 60 years. I accept the responsibility to fill the world with love, beginning here and now."

What could possibly be more heroic than that?

When I was a little kid, my mom would sometimes have the Julia Child cooking show playing on TV. My mom says that little four year old me would look at those knives and dreamily sigh, "Why can't we have knives like that?" For some reason I was absolutely fascinated with her kitchen knives. I thought they were the coolest thing on earth.

Fast forward, and I have become, quite by accident, somewhat of a knife collector.

Somebody asked me once, "what's the best overall survival knife?" Well, I wrote a five page document, ranking several knives in order, and talking about why you would choose one over the other, and what some suitable alternatives would be for the price.

The reason that was five pages long, the reason I have more than one knife, the reason a person might want more than one car, is all comparison. There's something better about each one. There's something that's a drawback about each one.

Inherent in every design in knives or in people, are strengths and weaknesses.

We are prone to compare ourselves to others all the time. This comparison game, good or bad, is something that's wired into us.

From this episode:

"… a couple of the daughters were in high school and they were really, really upset at the prospect of this move. After they moved, they thought it was the end of the world. In conversation with them, I would hear them talk about what they left behind. Leaving the friends, leaving what they thought the future would hold. They worried that their future could not possibly be as good as their past, and that whatever future there was would be nothing like what they had imagined or hoped it would be. And what about all the memories that they would leave behind?

"My own daughter, in a conversation with me a few months ago, and expecting her second child, expressed some anxiety about how she would feel about the new baby. How would she feel when he was born? What if she didn't love him as much as the first one? What if there wasn't enough love to go around? What if her future just held more labor and less love? Now, most parents have similar questions with their second child, but of course this was her first second child."

Change is always easier, and the future always brighter, when we understand how to love.

When people lack the words for something, it’s often unimaginable to them. Without words, some things just don’t exist.

We are often unaware of things we can’t describe, or hyperaware, and overly influenced, by those we use all too often—especially if they are negative. Our language dramatically influences our life experiences.

Words have power.

What you say or describe will influence your future: your physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, and emotional health.

In the music of your soul, do you choose consonance or dissonance? I have spent a lifetime creating or arranging music. That’s a language in which I am quite fluent. Similarly, I can help you rearrange the music of your mind. Let me know how and when I can help you realize the symphony in your soul.

In a conversation a few days ago, I said something about: in the world of metaphysical thinking, it’s postulated that there is only one true emotion. That emotion is love. Everything else is a derivative of fear. The friend to whom I was speaking said, “Would you do a podcast about that?”

In this episode, we explore a few definitions of love, including Eros, Philia, and Agape.

We also talk about fear, love's great counterfeit, and how to recognize and replace it with love. The happiest people live there.

You've probably noticed, especially over the last couple of years, that society as a whole feels heavier, angrier, more afraid. Negative emotions like anger always cause harm to our bodies and minds. Getting rid of negative emotions can free us up to do things that we are capable of doing, but would otherwise be unable to do. There are opportunities that we simply can't see when negative emotions have gotten in the way or negative habits of thinking.

It's time for you to put that behind you. You need never tell that story again to yourself or to anyone else. You will be shocked at how much of your life is being governed by this heavy bag of stuff you are carrying around, with a story inside of it.

I've worked with several clients over the past few weeks. A surprising number of them have been dealing with some anger. In this episode, with permission, I share a portion of one of my conversations with you. I think you will find this helpful.

During this season of gratitude and appreciation, gather your family close, and examine them with gratitude. If you are the only family you have, examine yourself for all that is beautiful and good and kind about you. Most importantly, may we all seek to do what the Master would do: be grateful as He is grateful, serve as He serves, and love as He loves.

"I believe that appreciation is a holy thing—that when we look for what's best in a person happen to be with at the moment, we're doing what God does all the time. So in loving and appreciating our neighbor, we're participating in something sacred." –Fred Rogers

Be sure to listen to part two on this topic, in the next episode of Nathan's School of Thought.

“My research revealed that lucky people generate their own good fortune via four basic principles. They are skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition, create ::self-fulfilling prophesies:: via positive expectations, and adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good.” –Richard Wiseman

Self-fulfilling prophecy is the result of our faith, our assurance of things hoped for, and evidence of things not seen, whether good or bad. Now, of course, in the Bible verse, we’re talking about good things to come, but it works both ways. We look for evidence all the time. The kids trash the house; we say, “Who did this?” We watch a crime show; what’s the evidence? We listen to a scientist talk about how the universe works and we say, “Show me some evidence of that.” In relationships, we talk about evidence all the time.

There’s a saying that pops up very often when we’re trying to prove something, and the earliest citation I can find of the current usage of the phrase, at least, is by Arthur James Balfour, the first Earl of Balfour. He said, “There are three kinds of falsehoods; lies, damned lies, and statistics.” We use statistics or evidence to tell lies, damn lies or statistics about ourselves. Attacks on ourselves are often phrased in a way that shows what we believe we are, despite our actions for good. We say, “I am…” “I’m a bad person. I have too many flaws. I’ve made too many mistakes. I have done too many things that were wrong. I have too many hidden flaws. I have too many pet sins.”

Really? Too many for what? Too many to overcome by yourself, maybe. There isn’t some state that you can reach that makes you irredeemable, and yet we believe this “irrefutable evidence” about ourselves and find more and more to stack on top of it until the burden becomes too heavy to bear. We often come to a conclusion at the end of this kind of talk that says, “If people really knew how bad I am, they would abandon me.”

Now all of this is an evidence problem and it’s an evil one. Our evidence can even exacerbate or produce depression, and it forms a vicious cycle. Dr. Allen Schwartz said, “All of us have to clear ourselves of this ‘poor me’ way of thinking. It is not helpful and not realistic. Negative thinking is contagious, because it leads to negative talk and the self-fulfilling prophecy. If you convince yourself that your life is awful, then you go about making your life awful.”

If you find the evidence of things not seen that are good, you will find happiness. You will find improved health and better immune response. You will find deeper, more fulfilling relationships. You will find more gratitude, and you will find less fear. Your entire life can be transformed by these things that we’re talking about. Focusing on all that is good and true, including what is good and true about you, becomes the assurance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Do this every single chance you get. Treat yourself as that person you are becoming. Treat others the same way and ignore everything else. It will change your life.

I can help you with this—and help you provide some of that evidence. To get started, go to natewalkercoaching.com, and in the contact area in the comments section, tell me things you’re thinking about how I can help you. If you’d like, you can take the Habit Finder assessment linked from that same website, and you and I will schedule a time to go through it together, free of charge, and find out how I can help you best.

Some of you may already be familiar with Victor Frankl and I have mentioned him in previous podcast episodes. He was a Holocaust survivor, including time spent at the prison camp at Auschwitz. Here's what he said: "It is a peculiarity of man that he can only live by looking to the future sub specie aeternitatis", which means it's an expression that describes what's universally and eternally true. So he's saying it's a peculiarity of man, that we can only live by looking to the future in a way that's universally and eternally true. And then he continues, "…and this is his salvation in the most difficult moments of his existence. The prisoner who had lost faith in the future—his future—was doomed. With his loss of belief in the future, he also lost his spiritual hold. He let himself decline and become subject to mental and physical decay. His faith in the future and his will to live had become paralyzed and his body fell victim to illness." Remember, this is from a man in a concentration camp, or at least describing the experience he had in a concentration camp.

We can cultivate faith in others, and in our own futures, or lower our expectations in both cases. Whichever one we do will result in that thing that we expected. Our expectations control our future. Don't argue with me. I know what I'm talking about. I can just picture somebody right now saying, "Well, yeah, but that's an over…" No, it's not really an oversimplification. We can go through it in greater detail and we can have a much longer podcast episode. But generally speaking, and powerfully speaking, our beliefs about our future and about ourselves will manifest themselves.

So what do you do if you're in a situation where you want to ensure your own success? What if you want to make sure that the future is something that you can look forward to, not something you should dread? In this episode, I give you some suggestions that will prove helpful.

It's astonishing to me that I began to associate my value as a person with the number of hours that I worked, the lack of sleep, the changes of time zones, or the number of places I visited in a short time. That's not who I really was. That's not what made me valuable as a person, but I began to associate myself so much with what I did for a living, that it became my identity. to the point that it almost ended my life.

You Are an Amplifier

In my coaching and consulting practice, I employ an extremely powerful tool that accurately points out habits of thought that are sabotaging success for that individual—and I mean success in any area, measured in any way they choose to measure it. As a bonus for listeners to this episode, here is a link to the Habit Finder Assessment: https://habitfindercoach.com/natewalker

It is sad and alarming to me to see three things coming up over and over, and it seems, with increasing frequency. They are Discouragement, Franticness, and Conditional Self-Worth.

Some things, when not managed, AMPLIFY our destructive thoughts.

  • Hormone levels can amplify our destructive thoughts
  • Stress can amplify our destructive thoughts
  • So can:
  • Fear amplifies our thoughts
  • Conflict amplifies our thoughts
  • Pain amplifies our thoughts
  • Fatigue
  • Urgency
  • etc.

An emotion may bring a thought to mind; a thought may produce an emotional response. But the net effect is still - you guessed it - amplification.

Our amplitudes can effect:
Two people
A community
* A mob (Mob mentality is a shared confirmation bias whose amplitudes combine so powerfully that people do things they would never otherwise do. Entire nations have felt overwhelming shame when they let their amplitudes coming until it blotted out reason, compassion, and the wise exercise of agency.)

Patterns of thought and emotion often build upon each other until they run wild. I grew up on a horse ranch. If one horse got out, we could choose to leave the broken hole in the fence until all the horses stampeded, or we could catch the little devil, but him back in the corral, and patch the hole in the fence.

We are prone to blame forces both inside and outside of ourselves for our thoughts and emotions. “My brain is just not working today; my hormones MAKE me feel this way, I CAN’T control my anger; he MADE me feel bad, etc., I have ADD, etc.

Many of us, including myself, have had struggles with depression. For some, it’s occasional. For others, it’s nearly cripplingly constant.

Depression July 2022 Umbrella study: https://rdcu.be/cT9Yv

While the thoughts or emotions I have mentioned, and many more, may feel real to us, they are most often NOT out of our control. We can catch the little devil inside, while it’s still little, put it back in the corral, and patch the hole in the fence, or we can give in to the stampede, letting our thoughts run wild until they cannot be called back. Patching the hole in the fence may include qualified professional help. For me, patching the hole in the fence—that weak spot that kept breaking over and over—was the result of having found a good professional coach who could help me make the fence stronger AND increase my power to direct my thinking, emotions, and as a result, actions. Learning how to be the one calling the shots is the greatest gift you will ever give yourself and your loved ones.

Which of the waves in your life do you wish to amplify?*

I can help you amplify the thoughts that give you personal power, increased productivity, and self-control
Faith can amplify your power
Learning can amplify your power
Meditation can amplify your power
taking charge of your health can amplify your power
serving others can amplify your power
honoring your body can amplify your power
Positive self-talk can amplify your power
and above all, changing your habits of thinking can amplify your power

You be the captain. You pilot the ship. If I can help you navigate, click the links in the podcast description, or go to … and we’ll get started. Results begin when you say yes.

Our lives are made of seasons. Recently, a family member, in mental anguish, ended his season early. Had he been able to wait until the spring of a new season, he might have grown into new opportunities. Last week, we mourned his loss, and celebrated his life.

Our seasons may include famine and plenty, love and loss, fitness and fatigue, pain and power; children, grandchildren, age ad youth, loved ones leaving this world, and loved ones coming to this world, full of promise.

Celebrate the seasons!

Wind and storm, rain and snow and spring, insects and minerals, renewal and growth, hot sun and cool days, falling leaves, then winter again - over and over. Why can we so often see this beautiful cycle in all but ourselves? We see growth rings in a tree, and can determine whether the winter was harsh in year 37 of the tree’s existence. Fighting the elements, putting down roots, pushing the rocks out of the way, and reaching toward the light, all result in a beautiful, useful, and abundant tree. So it is with us. We are growing things.

A person without challenges would simply cease to live. Only resistance builds muscle. Only experience provides the strength to overcome challenges and become something different. Trees wither and die from many things; lack of water, poor soil, disease, insects, bad weather, and so on. But the trees that are truly magnificent often overcame all that I have just mentioned. It was the overcoming that provided the needed strength to grow, or provided antibodies that would shield them against a future invader.

Things don’t always work out the way we thought, or hoped, or feared. But everything good is eternal. Everything difficult is an opportunity to learn, and if we allow it, will bring us closer to the Eternal. It may not feel like an opportunity at the time, but wishing it away won’t make anything good of the situation. Learning will. Looking forward with faith will. Optimism will. Patience will. God will.

Treasure the season you’re in, and let me help you.
