Hey guys, last night my phone showed me this album of a Game Day my friends and I did somewhere about a week and few days ago to mark the end of the year. We played a variety of games.

But before the games, a friend and I went by a Lounge nearby to pick up some Pizza, drinks and Ice for the occasion.

The manager of the lounge gave us this ginger drink to enjoy whiles we wait for the Pizza. As expected, the drink was BITTER! We ended up leaving it there after taking like 2 sips at most each. Lol

In a few minutes, the Pizza was ready and we took off to meet the others at the venue we picked. It was at the house of one of my friends.

Upon arrival, we went straight to playing. We started with Ludo and Uno (I’m sure you know what these are).

Next, we did some pick and act. For the pick and act, we divided ourselves randomly into two teams: Team A and B.

Then we had the acts written and folded into a bowl. A member from each team would pick an act, and act it out for their group to identify. My group lost this game because for some reason, we kept picking very difficult acts. I picked Caterpillar for one of my acts. How tf do you act caterpillar?😂

After Pick and Act, we played Never Have I Ever. This part is not in the video because I forgot to record. I was too busy finding out the no good my friends have been up to.😂

After this round of refreshment rolled out, we played an instructions game. This game was all about following following instructions about touching parts of your body. Head, eyes, nose, shoulder, knees and toes. So the lead would mention a part of the body, and you’re expected to touch it. There was a cup between every two people, and the end goal was to see who would be able to pick up the cup when the lead says “cup”.

Then we played Simon Said next. It’s very similar to the instructions game I just explained, except, there’s no cup with this one. With this game, one of you basically becomes a character called Simon. Then he says “Simon says …..” and you have to do what Simon says. If he doesn’t say “Simon said …” but simply says “Do …” you’re not supposed to do it. You’re supposed to only take instructions from Simon. So for instance, if he says “Simon says touch your head”, everyone touches their head. But if he says “Touch your Head”, no one touches their Head. As a matter of fact, no one should flinch. We kept eliminating people until there were only two people left. It was very difficult playing this one because it required immense attention and fast response.

Then we played Truth or Dare next. Truth or Dare was wild, but what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, so no tea for you guys unfortunately.😂😂

To ensure that everyone doesn’t pick truth, we created a rule where after every two Truths, the next person automatically had to choose a Dare.

In between games, we refilled empty bowls with popcorn, served new rounds of Pizza and drinks. To keep everyone’s mouths busy.

Next we played Beer Pong. But in our case, we replaced the drink with a soft drink. For this game, you’re supposed to bounce the ball into a cup filled with a drink, and the opponent drinks it. The goal is to bounce as many balls as possible into cups, so your opponent drinks too much. Lol

After this, we opened a free style game floor where everyone played whatever game they wanted to play. We had scrabble, Ludo, Uno, and this Candle Blowing thingy. I joined the nerdy group to play Scrabble first, and joined the Candle people later. The popcorn was all over the place at this point.😂

After the professional development session I shared about last week and several excuses and postponement of our relocation date, my post mate and I set out for Tatale yesterday.

We left Tamale around 10am and got to Tatale around 1pm, as dusty as dusty can get. I wore a turtleneck because I knew what lies on the road. Lol

After we got to our destination (Tatale EP Agric Senior High School), we changed into more casual clothes and headed to the market to get some stuff to help is settle in.

This was what the road to the market looked like. No, that is not fog. This is dust. I had a migraine from how much dust I inhaled throughout the day. I’m not sure how that works, but yeah.

Interesting enough, it was market day when we got there. The market here reminds me of market at Savelugu. Not as disorganized, but the structures in the market were very similar.

My colleague bought a sponge and some slippers. I, on the other hand, bought a bucket. It appears neither of us remembered to bring a bucket along. I’m honestly shocked at the price differences between things here and once back at Tamale. I guess that is owed to the fact that Tatale is about 20 minutes ride away from Togo’s border.

Being here feels strange right now(which I guess is to be expected) , but I for sure will try as much as I can to enjoy the place despite challenges I’ll face here.

A few months, I shared about my trip to Red Clay Studio, an art center in Tamale. I also mentioned in that post that even though I explored a lot, I still hadn’t seen everything the place had to offer.

Well, on Friday, I went back there to see a little bit more of the place. Again, still couldn’t see the entire place.

This time around, there wasn’t a tour guide around for some reason, so a friend basically became the tour guide cos they’ve been here many times already.

So starting off the tour, we had these clay pots. I’m not sure exactly what they’ll be used for, or what fancy name the art they’ll be turned into will be called.

Anyways, around here, they’re used to store water. In the early 2000s, almost every house in my neighborhood had one of these pots because fridges were not really as common as they’re now. Let me tell you, these pots just don’t freeze water, but boy are they cool!

How they kept them cool was that they would place the pots inside these sacks, wet the sacs, and find a cool shaded spot in the house to place them.

Of course, if they’re in an art center, I’m sure there must be different plans for them besides use as cooling pots. According to my friend, they’re most likely going to be used to paint human heads😂. I don’t really know. I guess we’ll find out in a few months when they’re put to use. As for the boxes, I have absolutely nothing to say about them because I have no clue what they’re doing there. They look like pretty normal boxes to me.

Next, I went to take a closer look at this train. I know nothing about trains, but (again according to one of my friends) this is the engine or so? I don’t know for sure cos this is the closest I’d gotten to a train in my life up until this point. I could agree with my friend though, cos I’ve seen Tractor engines and they look somewhat similar to this. I also watched a video on social media last month where one guy was explaining where a certain car engine got it’s name from, and I remember the engine looked like a mini version of this right here.

As for this thing here, no one had any idea what it was. We all had a few ideas though. Me personally, I thought it was one of two things - A submarine, or some sort of a watchtower. I’m thinking these two things because of the steel stair-climb thingies inside it and the small opening at the rear end. I told my friends I’d tell them what it was in 3 days once I posted it on Hive, cos my friends on Hive know all sorts of things. So someone better get talking.😂

And finally to the mega train itself. This is a very old train. I found this symbol along the sides of the train. If you remember this picture above from my post a few months ago, I showed you guys a picture of some photos in the room full of art. One of those pictures showed people standing in front of this train.

Aside this, the train looked pretty old both on the outside and in. We weren’t allowed to go into the train, but I managed to sneak inside to get these.

At the back end, there was this small compartment that we argued over about what it could be. I’m of the personal opinion it was like a small toilet. I’m convinced I’m right because I took a look directly under that small compartment and I saw a hole, almost resembling some sort of a drainage system.

I also got these pictures of the insides of the train through the window. I think these were probably either scribbled on there from wherever the train was kept before it got here, or from passengers that boarded this train back in the day. Although, I think the latter is highly unlikely.

Looking at these window pictures later, I realized they look like paintings, because of the white window frames. Not sure if I’m the only one seeing them though.

And finally we got to the front of the train where we saw the compartment where the coal (fuel basically) was fed into. I’m not sure what it’s called.

This was basically the end of the train part of the tour. I didn’t pay much attention to the planes this time cos I saw my fair share of planes last time. I still took a few pictures though.

And the most interesting part of the tour! The Capital CorpsesFancy name, right? This is one of the things I love about art - the fancy names. And this fancy name tells a story.

(A small background story of why this place is called the Capital Corpses)

Ibrahim collected these rusted sewing machines and out-of-use school desks and turned into the Capital Corpses. He called it that because these artifacts were collected from Tamale, the Capital of the Northern Region. And seeing that they were rusting and out of use, they’re basically dead.

In this room, there over 100 of these rusted sewing machines on school desks. These are all wired and connected to a switch, and you can turn them on by stepping on the switch that corresponds to a certain row.

Seeing all of these turned on in harmony under complete silence is breathtaking!

But this is not even the coolest thing about the place.

When it is extremely quiet around this part of Red Clay, it is rumored that friction of the the corpses (rusted sewing machines) rusted parts moving against each other produces bird chirping sounds. I’m not sure how true this is, but I recorded the video attached so you can see and be your own judge.

I couldn’t really get as much of the history in this trip because we didn’t have a tour guide with us. I was really curious about what the black hanging cloth represents, but my bet is that it goes to add to the “corpses” in the name.

Oh yes, and there was this humongous blackboard too. Although not very visible, it still has writings of the subjects they were used to teach for the last time before they were put into this work of art.

And this brings us to the end of this month’s trip to Red Clay Studios. In my next trip there, hopefully I should cover from the Parliament of Ghosts to everything else remaining.

In my last post about extracurriculars I got some comments talking how it might be too late for them to get some extracurriculars on their CV.

In this video, I talk about how taking gap years can be a great way to build up your profile and fill the blanks, making you a more competitive applicant in an application pool of very competitive.

Hey guys, a lot has been happening, but just haven’t been able to keep up and share. Today, I decided to make some time and share this as a sort of a little update on what I’m currently up to.

Today marked the starting of the Mental Health Bootcamp at HopIn Academy. I started filming after we came break from a break, so this is a very short clip. The bootcamps’s kick off was very fun and educative though as we had a very insightful lecture on Mental Health by Dr William Hill Koomson, Psychiatrist at Tamale Teaching Hospital(TTH) and Lecturer at University for Development Studies(UDS) School of Medicine.

The discussion with him covered everything from what Mental Health is, the difference between Mental Health and Mental Illness, causes of Mental Health illness or disorders, the stigma people with mental health disorders face , the need for mental health sensitization, challenges faced by the Mental Health/Psychiatric Workforce and some proposed solutions to battle the challenges.

Today’s discussion alone cleared a lot of misconceptions I had about some Mental Illness and Mental Health disorders that I originally thought I knew so much about. But It didn’t just clear some misconceptions I had, it changed my mind entirely on how I saw mental health disorders like schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and the likes. Traditional myths about mental health illnesses like common schizophrenia was also demystified and scientifically digested.

To be honest, I self-diagnosed myself for a lot of mental health illnesses for every new disorder we learnt during the discussion. Thankfully though, Doc kept reminding us that it was normal to experience some of these symptoms but that it is advised to seek professional advise if we felt like we were showing symptoms for periods longer than the usual.

So much was covered today that I can’t show you in just one post. The bootcamp will be happening over a week-span though, so hopefully I’ll keep posting updates to the very end. By Friday, we would’ve been put in groups where we’ll come up with business models surrounding the Mental Health Space and pitch to a board of judges. The winning team will be incubated as part of HopIn’s Business Incubation Project. I hope I’m able to share the entire journey with you guys here(at least most of it). We’ll see. Have a great week!

I decided to make this in video form because it’s special. This is a two-in-one video of my Hive stars and a celebration of my 1 year Hive anniversary!

The Neoxian city despite the fact that it’s not a person embodies one big fun community and contributes a lot to my journey on Hive so far. Mr D and his city where I met my now Hive friends will always remain a sanctuary in my life. I also have my own space where I run the city games with abu.

Like I said in the video, I’ve met so many people on Hive who have each influenced and contributed something positive to my journey and I can’t mention everyone. I simply say that anyone that in any way has positively influenced my journey, I’m grateful. From the tiniest upvotes, to the shortest comment.

I had planned to talk about my Hive goals and where I am on the path, but the video is already too long, so maybe I’ll do that in another post. Thanks for checking this out and thank you for all the support and memories.

Hey guys, I was just thinking today it’s been a while I did a video and went digging into my video drafts to find this video right here.

It was an update vlog I made about 2-3 months ago when I was overwhelmed with my ~~overworked and underpaid~~ national service.

Lol looking back at how stressed I was at the time, I am relieved! Seriously, I was all kinds of stressed then and even though the stress is still not over completely, I’ve got time to catch my breath now.

Aside this video, I actually found another one about a voice over travel blog I made about 2 months ago when nhaji01 and I went to Red Clay. I wrote two posts explaining the tour, but made a voice over with the videos we took there to take you through more of a visual experience. I don’t think I’ll be posting that anymore though because it seems it’s content has become irrelevant because of the elapsed time. So enjoy the depressed update for now. Lol

I think there’s a certain element of communication that certain people lack. Sometimes when other people are talking to you about their situation, what they really need is for you to just listen to them vent. Maybe they’d appreciate some sort of comfort, but they really just need a listening ear to vent to.

Social media is really just a big facade. A place where we come to to put on the masks we want to be identified as at different points. The only way to know what people’s reality is outside of the pictures, captions and blogs is to really know them outside the public stunts.

I used to have that problem of entitlements to people’s attention too. Now, I just realize that everyone has their own shit to handle and so should I. Sometimes you look at the problems you’re dealing with without people knowing and you wonder what they might be dealing with when they’re offline too.

Hey guys, I read about the Piratae Comtest a few days ago and have been planning to make an entry but couldn’t because I planned to do it in video form and didn’t find the time due to some busy offline activities with work.

Also, after finally bringing myself to record the video, then came the shy. I’ve been skeptical about posting it because I’m not used to talking about stuff like this here. For the fun of it, I’m going ahead to post this:)

Th experience I talk about in this video goes way back to my Senior High School days. This was like 5 years ago or something.

I was basically a rookie to the whole dating thing and I didn’t have any game or rizz then. Lol maybe I still don’t, but I guarantee that I’m a lot better than I was then.

Anyways, because of my lack of experience, my first attempt to talk to a girl in hopes for something that led to a relationship, I said some very silly stuff, ended up getting bounced and found out later that the girl who advised my “crush” to bounce me actually wanted me for herself…

Watch the video to unvail the details:)

This post is a submission to the Paritae blogging competition "Dating Chronicles". If you haven’t joined the comtest yet, check the linked posts for more details and join the fun:)

I recorded this a few days ago when I was on my way to the first Hive Students Hub book distribution event in Northern Ghana.

The outreach was a success and you can find a report of it here. The kids were overflowing with joy and were curious to learn more about the internet and who we(Hive) are.

I’m excited about the work the hivestudentshub have set out to do as an extension of the Hive Ghanaian community. It’s amazing how much Hive cares about lives of people in continents far and beyond, and it’s desire to change and positively impact lives of people.

We’re grateful for all the support the Hive community has given the Ghanaian community and for the funding from @valueplan to keep alleviating people’s lives of suffering and improving their standards of living all over the world.

The Hive students Hub is a newly born support project for school going children in Ghana, similar to the HiveGoesToSchool project run in Venezuela.

The community team representing (@depressedfuckup,@thisisnativeboy, @abdul01, @samed10) run our first out reach program at GAF International School, an underprivileged primary and Junior High School in Tamale, Ghana.

Prior to our visit, we’d made several preparations in accordance with the school visit protocols and it was agreed we could come today. So we were at the school premises by …am

We met and talked with the staff, enlightened them (again) on the purpose of our visit, and then together with the school staff, we went around the class rooms to talk to and distribute the books among the kids.

You should’ve seen the kids faces. They were beaming with excitement and happiness, curious what our uniform T-shirts represented, what we had for them, and why we were giving them anything to even begin with. So to brief them:

we educated them on who we are, letting them know that we present an web3 community called Hive and that this book distribution was one of the several ways our community is supporting and changing lives in the real world.

We visited 8 classes, from Kindergarten 1 to primary 6 and we shared 164 books among the students and 36 books among staff, giving each member of staff 3 Hive-branded books and 1 hive-branded pen. For the kids, we gave two books to each student in the upper primary classes because they were older and had more use for the books. For the much younger kids, we gave one book to everyone in the remaining 7 classes, everything adding up to 200 books and 16 pens being distributed (12 pens for staff and 4 for Hive representatives)

At the end of our interaction with them, we helped them see that the internet was more than just TikTok or Facebook. Hive is a standing embodiment that the internet can be more. That social media can be more than just a place to post pictures and videos. It represents a true sustaining community that cares about the quality of life of even people outside the community, and is willing to contribute a quota to helping people and making the world a better place.

From our interaction with the student and staff:

  • A concern raised by the school about a lack of a computer laboratory to help keep the kids abreast with basic modern necessities like access to technology, specifically the internet. This was raised by a very concerned member of staff and he even mentioned of his several attempts to get in touch with non-governmental organizations(NGOs) that could in some be of assistance. In the future, I think there could be regular check ins at the schools previously supported by Hive through the HiveStudentsHub to see if Hive could further help alleviate some of their lacks.
  • We saw a lot of untapped talents upon our visit and we think it would be great to have some of the kids display their talents on Hive even now. The team considered creating Hive accounts for either the schools supported or individual accounts so kids with potential to indoctrinate and expose them early enough to the internet, web3 and content creation, whatever their talents may be.

At the end of everything, the students and staff organized to say a thank you to Hive for this act of kindness. We’re hoping that we can do regular check up on the school, update the Hive community, and if possible go back there for another distribution exercise some time.

Nothing is impossible with Hive and Hive on several occasions has demonstrated that. The Ghanaian community is forever thankful to @guiltyparties, @theycallmedan and @valueplan for all the ongoing projects aimed at improving the quality and standard of life in our motherland.

A few days ago, I attended a seminar called The GhGenome(Ghana Genome). Before I got there, I thought it was going to be a pretty boring seminar. But I was surprised when the event started. The guest speaker was Prof Ofori Acquah and he did his best to try to keep things basic because there were kids from High school in attendance with us as well.

The GhGenome is a research project aimed at identifying genetic disorders unique among Ghanaians. Until when I attended the seminar, I didn’t know we had sickle cell types identified and named by Ghanaian metrics because of the the fact that they’ve only been detected in Ghana so far.

The GhGenome mainly focuses on sickle cell screening, education and awareness creation because of the rising number of sickle persons in Ghana. The reason being that there’s a lack of education on what sickle cell is, how genetics increases children’s chances of being sickle sickle positive, and the need for couples to test their sickle status before they even consider getting hitched. People around here heavily rely on superstitious believes about sorcery to blame for why children have genetic conditions like down syndrome, instead of looking at their own genetics for underlying mutations.

Of course, GhGenome’s mission is not just all talk. They arranged to provide free sickle cell and prostrate cancer screening a day after this seminar was held.

GhGenome is also training the first batch of genetic counsellors in Africa, and will deploy them out to serve African’s l, especially couples advise on their genetics and direct them for genetic testing at the appropriate facilities.

This video is Prof Ofori Acquah’s presentation on the state of genetic disorders in Ghana, and the mission of GhGenome to screen and decode, educate and spread the word about the need especially for couples to go for genetic counselling.

I’m sorry about the not-so-clear video. I shot it on my friend’s phone because mine died just before the event started.

I like travelling, and since I don’t have the money to be able to afford it, I make do for other forms of travel aside physical travel. One way to travel without actually leaving your home is to hop on the internet, and games like minetest make the experience even better, because you’re in a game world where there is a limitless possibilities and entities to explore.

I’ve always had the intentions of trying out some games recently, and minetest was the last one I thought I’d try first. I initially planned on first trying splinterlands, then psyberx and cryptoshots. I’ve known about splinterlands for a while and have read several posts about it on @josedicus’s blog. Psyberx and cryptoshots however, I’ve only found out about recently.

Minetest is a blocky world video where you get to explore and build your own world in whatever fashion you like. It is open source and so customizable however you want, and it’s built on sandbox, a popular metaverse project you might have heard among the top 3 metaverse projects. If you’ve played Minecraft before, minetest is basically just like Minecraft in terms of game mechanics.

What is interesting is how I found out about minetest. If it wasn’t for Mr Dragon, guardian of the neoxian city, I probably wouldn’t be talking about minetest today with this much excitement. Since the city chat moved to discord, he introduced the minetest game as a little fun game for us to play in the city. I hear a lot of the citizens saying it is addictive, and after playing it last night, I understand why now.

Gameplay And My First Impression Honestly I was wowed when I saw what a creative world Mr Ray had created for the city on minetest. I spawned in front of the city and was met with a very beautiful view on the city’s gate, which happened to either be Mr Ray’s house, or close to it.

It didn’t take me long to see the monsters and aliens the citizens of the city had been talking about all day in the discord server. I honestly was taken by surprise when I saw them because I didn’t think I’d meet them that soon. I thought it’d take me a while before I run into them.

Running into them helped me though, because now I have to figure out the controls very fast if I don’t want to get killed by them. It took me like 2 minutes, I think, to figure out the controls, but even after an entire night of playing, I still having mastered them like I did with a game pad for FIFA. I guess that’ll happen eventually though.

Shortly after figuring out controls, I was on the move to get away from these creatures to safety and find myself some land to start building my land. I met another hinderance here. You see when I said I figured out the controls earlier, I meant I figured out which key was for movement in the different directions, and how to switch my camera view. I didn’t know you could jump at this point. I find that out when I got myself into a situation. I fell into a hole just near where I spawned, and took about 1 minute to realize the Space Bar was the key used for jumping. Unfortunately by this time, one of the monsters had shot some sort of blockers to corner me in a tight spot but I still got away, only to be killed by some other spider-looking monster shooting some lethal weapon.

After respawning, I didn’t move for about a minute, but took my time looking around with my mouse, and switching my camera view to figure out the best path to take. Lucky me! I realized there had been a staircase staring at me the first time I spawned, but I was too busy looking around and being wowed by the environment. I headed straight for the staircase this time.

Maybe I wasn’t so lucky after all. The blocker shooting monster shot some blockers in front of me as I climbed up and I was caught unable to move on the stairs. As I wiggled my way out of each block, it shot new ones to block me even more. I waited for a long time for some other creature to come put me out of my misery so I would just respawn and continue my game.

Then after a while of waiting, I turned around to look for other alternative routes out of there, but didn’t find any. Up the stairs was the only path that would lead me anywhere productive, I was sure of it. So I ended doing what we wouldn’t advice people do in real life. SUICIDE. I threw myself from the stairs for some creature to finish me, and lucky for me, some spider looking creature gave me a quick death. “I call that mercy”.

If you’ve played minetest at all, you know that I was in for one of a game. I didn’t know that the changes from the previous session you spawned from would follow you into the session of that spawn. Almost the entire staircase was blocked with the blocker from that spider creature and on top of that, one annoying bee stung me to death immediately I spawned. Didn’t even give me enough time to process the fuckery I was about to go through.

Just look at this. Even a chicken came for my head at one point. That was how helpless I was. I stood there and watched as that chicken flew closer and closer to me because I knew I wasn’t very familiar with the controls to be able to outrun it. And standing there, I couldn’t do anything but shooo it away with whatever it was in my hand. Damn bird wasn’t up for no games though and kept at it until I was DEAD!

I struggled with gameplay because I didn’t take my time to configure my keys and what they do earlier in the course of setup of the game. If you don’t want to end up like me, helpless and violated by both meer chickens (or duck or whatever the hell that thing was) and bees, your first order of business when you set up shop needs to be to configure your controls or keys.

As you can see from the gameplay and screenshots, minetest is not the complex and advanced graphic video games in God of War Style. It is very basic in terms of both graphics and gameplay. The movements are kinda boring, but okay in my opinion and I’ll recommend to you if you’re about exploring or you like to check out metaverse-like games.

I think it is also worth mentioning that the game by default doesn’t have monsters inside it, but the monsters are a mod added to the default game. So by default, you don’t have crazy chickens attacking you or bees stinging you.

I’ve loved gaming since I was a little boy, but gaming has been one of the two things I gave up growing up, and I think that is about to change now after minetest. I think I’ll be getting more involved with web3 games, lining up splinterlands and psyberx, even though these 2 might be a little more advanced than minetest. If you want to explore a game world of endless possibilities, definitely hop on minetest, and if you want to have a freaking good time aside minetest gameplay, hop on to The Neoxian City Discord Server

PS: I wrote and recorded the play preview several days ago, but haven’t been able to post it until now. It is worth mentioning that I’ve played minetest a lot more, and thanks to Mr Dragon’s guidance, I am a better player now. Maybe I should write a part 2 explaining the technical aspects of minetest which involves the real exploring… Building houses, finding treasures and killing monsters. I’ll leave you with this for now.

Hey guys, this week’s newbies initiative tasks on hive dapps and front ends has been the toughest one so far, not gonna lie. Not just because of the involvement of 3Speak, but because of the time it took me to get my screen recording and cropping and stitching right. I’ve been on this almost all day. This is my first time doing something like this, and I’m sure it shows in my voice in the recording. Okay, enough with the rant and onto the task.

In this video, I covered what my favorite dApp is, and the many reasons I like it. I also talk about some things I don’t like about it which include the cover image thing, and the problem with the post editor not showing the entire post on the mobile app.

Also, I talk about 3Speak and how it’s video blogging feature makes it unique from the other Hive dApps. I like to think of 3Speak as Hive’s own youtube, but on steroids.

Also, I talk about Liketu, Hive’s Instagram on steroids. I believe posting using specific using frontends related to the topic of your posts increases your odds of getting curation from the curation accounts of the frontends. Posting finance-related posts through the leofinance front end could increase your chances of getting curation from leofinance’s curation account, @ leo.voter. Posting your pictures through Liketu also might increase your odds of getting curation from Liketu on your photography posts.

This is the second post of the three-post MIA Diaries series I’m doing to cover the events that happened during my inactivity here two weeks ago when we started exam. This event happened on Saturday 3 weeks ago,and It covers the second theme of my school’s SRC week celebration, Artists Night, where we had a performance by a famous Ghanaian musician called Fancy Gadam. It was a wonderful night! You can check out the first post of the series here

Here’s the twisted part though. You’d be expecting that because it was just two days to the start of exam, the attendance for the event will be poor because people would be busy studying for the start of exam in two days right? Wrong! Students attended massively, and honestly, I wasn’t surprised. I expected this. I’ll explain why.

My school is not one that takes entertainment very serious. I’ve been in my school for 4 years now and we’ve NEVER celebrated SRC Week. It’s supposed to be a tradition to celebrate SRC week every year, but for reasons unbeknown to us students, my batch in particular unfortunately haven’t seen any SRC week celebration the 4 years we’ve been here. Until this one of course. So it makes sense that students took this Artist Night as a once-in-a-lifetime (Once in a 4-year degree time in our case lol)opportunity to enjoy this fun night because it might really never happen again until they leave this school.

So yeah it was a pretty cool night. I repeated my outfit for dinner from a few weeks ago if you read my awards & dinner post. I don’t think anyone noticed though because of the crowd and the fact that the auditorium’s lightning was not clear enough to focus on detail like that.

I got to the event pretty late at 12am(that’s like midnight here) because I knew Fancy Gadam, the artist performing at the occasion was one that likes late performances(and I was right). As you can see from the picture above, there was a long que waiting to get inside even that late at night. After two hours of waiting and fake hype about him finally coming on stage, we saw him at 2am and the occasion officially started. Not that we were sitting idly waiting for him, but let’s just say he was the main site of attraction for the occasion and the reason why a lot of people attended. While we waited for him, there were of course performances by smaller or relatively new artists(Underground Artists). Some of them were pretty good if I’m being honest.

When Fancy Gadam came on stage, the crowd started moving closer to the stage until the stage was almost taken over by us. Most of the people that were upstairs came down too and got closer. People ran to touch him, others to take pictures with him but were stopped by the artist’s security. A few managed to evade them though, just long enough for a quick selfie. I was surprised when I found myself full of energy and having so much love and showing so much interest in his performance. I thought I didn’t like him that much. I was clearly wrong.

That is Fancy Gadam in the white Miami shirt on stage

At this point, if you haven’t watched the video at the beginning of the post yet, this is where I tell you to go watch the video now to get a feel of the occasion. You won’t understand the songs we’re singing because they’re in Ghanaian dialects. But you can still appreciate the enthusiasm and the positive energy and the fun people were having(including me🙃). I’m sorry about the camera continuously shaking through out the video. If you notice closely, that happens every time Fancy Gadam comes close to me. People kept pushing us in front to get closer to him.

The night was awesome! We left the school auditorium(venue for the occasion) around 3am, I think. Back to ours hostels to wake up with minds ever ready to devour books the following day.

I took the videos myself and edited it into a compilation using VivaVideo. Do pardon my video editing as I'm no expert. Also All pictures watermarked are from my school’s SRC camera guy who has released pictures to us students to use freely. They’re too many pictures to post, but I hope you enjoyed these ones!

Have a great day people!

Today, I went for training with my project team mates on sample collection. We’re going to be working with blood, urine and stool samples, and so it was necessary we learnt how to collect the samples. Collecting urine and stool samples are not complicated, blood on the other hand will require care and skill, especially since we’ll be dealing with children.

For our analysis, we won’t need to collect blood venous blood so the training was quite simple. We’ll only be collecting blood from the finger by the finger prick method.

So first, our supervisor who will be training us demonstrated using diagrams from some instruction manual he had, and then with one of us as a volunteer, he took the first sample as a demonstration for us to see.

We each took samples from each other in turns after his demonstration.

The Method To collect blood from the finger using the fingerprick method, you first wipe the fingertip where the blood will be collected with an alcohol swab to disinfect and clean it.

Then you wipe the alcohol itself off the finger to ensure that it doesn’t interfere with the results for the test. This step is especially important for tests that involve determining blood sugar concentration, since the alcohol will contribute to this concentration.

After wiping the alcohol off, comes the hard part- The Pricking. I personally don’t like needles so it was a little funny when it was my turn to be pricked. The pricking is done at the middle of the last finger segment, not too close to ends of the finger. Middle.

You squeeze the ends of the finger to stimulate blood to flow towards the end you’re pricking. Then once the finger has been pricked, the first drop of blood is wiped off. What we’re interested in is the subsequent drops. Contrary to what most people think, the pricking doesn’t require too much pressure or energy.

The subsequent drops of blood are collected into a small vile where drops can be taken from for the following tests.

Preparing Thick and Thin Stains Blood drops are taken from the vile containing the collected blood. Two drops are made on the slide, one thick and the other thin. The thick drop is made near the frost end of the slide.

You put another slide called at the other end of the slide on which the blood slides are, and slowly move it along the slide holding the two drops until it touches the thin blood drop. When it does, the thin blood is spread along it’s length and you basically push it along the length to make a thin mark. This what the slide looks like if everything is done correctly. The thin stain is used for a specie identification test.

I demonstrate the procedure in the video above, all though, I didn’t really get the desired results for the thin stain. My thin stain was too thin because my drop was too small, like my colleague mentioned in the video. We'll be doing a lot more practice in the coming days to perfect our skills before we actually head out to the field so it's all good.

The Hb Meter(Anemia Analysis) For the Hb meter, you basically take a drop and place it on the strip channel which is where the blood-stained strip will be placed and the Hb level read.

RDT Test (Malaria Test)

source

For the RDT test, the RDT strip has two holes called wells, one for the blood drop to be placed into, and the other for the buffer. You add the blood stain in the hole closest to the results window, and the buffer to other. If strips appear at both the C and T lines, then we have a positive test for malaria. However, if only one strip shows at the C line, then the test is invalid and we’ll have to perform a new test. If you were looking forward to seeing my own pictures of the RDT to accompany the explanation, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed to hear that I didn’t take any pictures for the RDT test.

This weekend started out boring with nothing to do but student stuff. Or so I thought until I received a phone call from my friend @zzzinnn about an awards and dinner night happening in our school auditorium last night. I initially planned not to go because if I would go, it would be with my girlfriend, @nhaji01, but she’s not on campus at the moment.

Because I didn’t plan to go earlier, I didn’t purchase a ticket for event. A ticket cost 15GHC if you’d bought it a day before the event on Friday or earlier. For those of us that were undecided and purchased the tickets at the entrance to the auditorium, we did so at an extra 5GHC cost, making our tickets 20GHC.

The event was supposed to officially start at 6pm, but I know Ghanaians and our bad habit towards time, and worst of all, students of my campus. Students on my campus show up 2hours after the scheduled kickoff time. The program was officially supposed to start at 7pm, but I came 4 hours later around 11pm. In my defense, I didn’t intentionally plan to come late, I just didn’t plan to come at all.

Everything was already setup and the event was in progress when I got there. I was disappointed to find out that I was a bit oddly dressed though. Because it was a dinner night, everyone dressed in suits and ties, official wear and tuxedos, with shoes. Well not everyone obviously, there were others dressed like me. I wore a baggy T-shirt and pant, and finished it with a Jordan sneaker. Yeah I was totally different from the crowd. I haven’t been to a dinner night before and I didn’t know what the dress code was. Hey, no one tells you that kinda stuff. I learned tonight for next time lol.

me in white grenade Kalvin Klein T-shirt and @gunu01 in white African wear

I liked this guy’s outfit so I took a picture so I can later get myself one lol. You won’t see how fire the outfit was because I zoomed in like a lot to capture this. He’s about to have a twin for that dress and he doesn’t even know lol.

I got seated next to @gunu01 and a couple of my friends and enjoyed the show. Awards were given based on different categories. To be eligible for an award, you had to pick a nomination form for the category you wish to enter the award for. After nominees were accepted, next was voting, and awards were given based on nominees with the highest votes. Except for one category which I’ll tell you about in detail later. I found a lot of flaws with selecting the winners based on number of votes. One being for instance that one contests can just buy their way to an award if they were rich enough, and considering that each vote was as cheap as 50pesewas($0.05), that was more than easy to accomplish. I saw one contestant group win an award(best student team of the year) with just 10 votes. 10votes is just ($0.5). But I guess in their case, you could say it was because they were the only team nominated so it was only natural they won.

The awards I witnessed presented were: Student Entrepreneur of the year, Most Popular Student (Male and Female both), Most Fashionable Student, after an hour into the program since I came, I started to ask about food lol. I was hungry and so was everyone else apparently. I can only imagine how the people who came 5 hours ago at the scheduled time were feeling, if me who came an hour ago was already asking for food.

After 30 minutes of waiting, our table was served. We each received a plate of vegetable salad with chicken, and a rather weird addition. It was round and soft and most of us thought it was more meat at first and got excited. To our surprise, it was mashed yam that was fried together with meat. I thought I wouldn’t like it, but surprise again, I LOVED IT! I couldn’t have enough of it lol. And now it was on to the final award of the year. What everyone’s been waiting for.

Life of the party- Miss CKT-UTAS This was the last category for the night as it was the most important. My phone just had to die at the best part of the night because I didn’t charge it prior to the event since I didn’t plan ln coming. So forgive me for the next few pictures that are not of as high quality as the first because I took them with someone else’s phone. They weren’t that bad though:)

If you follow beauty pageants at all, you know, this was where the life of the party was. You remember I told you all award winners were selected on the basis of the votes they had except one? Yeah this is the one. For miss CKT-UTAS, it was more of a beauty pageant. Miss CKT-UTAS is like the pageant contest of my school(CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences). For this category, the winner was selected on more than just the basis of ghe number of votes they got. Their look, beauty, presentation and other stuff as well as voted were considered.(I think so lol). In my head, this was fucked up in some way, but I wasn’t on the deciding panel so what concern do I have with this? There were 7 contestants, and eviction was done until there were 2, one second runner up, and the winner.

After the Miss CKT UTAS award winner was crowned, the event pretty much ended. People started leaving and the DJ ended things with Wiz Khalifa’s. We called it a night at 3am. You might think this is late, but I assure you, we didn’t it see it like that. When I came first year the awards and dinner night closed at 5am lol. We were lucky enough it closed early this time and the pending rain missed us by just 30 minutes. I’m sure people that were still at the venue will have an extra part of the story to tell lol. Anyways, these are some more pictures at the event. There was a red carpet photography spot, but I was too shy to go there so no red carpets for you guys.😂

That was it for Saturday and pretty much the entire weekend because I don’t think it get’s better than this(unless my girlfriend get’s back lol). Thanks for reading. Have a great rest of your weekend and a great week ahead. Ciao.

My class had a group presentation on Cell Signaling today. This is one of the 7 courses we’re taking for our final semester. The name of the course itself, I guess is self-explanatory but if I had to tell you, I’d simply say it was about how the cells in your body communicate to get things done in your body.

For this presentation, my class was divided into 4 groups, Each having 20 students except for the last group with 10 students. Each group had 30 minutes to present because the lecture was a 2 hour lecture.

The video shows a slideshow of 3 videos. Me walking to the presentation, and 2 short videos of 2 of my colleagues presenting. I hope you like it.
