Horse and livestock owners. Ranchers. Farmers. We work with our hands. We’re every color and religion. We grow flowers in the city. We’re warriors, guardians, peacekeepers. We’re everyone with the instinct to survive. We don’t quit. This is our podcast. Let’s talk about where people like us fit in. Try to understand it. Please join us. Mr. McGiggles is back. And not a minute too soon, as I had a hellish long Honey Do list for him here on the farm. As usual we mock modern woke pop culture... I swear A LOT... we probably piss off a few people... and we spend a good amount of time discussing how to successfully buy and own property (especially property with land) when one of you deploys or spends long periods away from home. Part of country living is being a steward of your land and that can be a lot for one person. Trees fall down. Tractors break. Wells go dry. Basements flood. Just life as usual, but to survive and thrive it takes a team and support and planning. It's a work in progress for us. Please join us AND forgive the technical difficulties about 3/4th of the way through. Didn't think this episode was going to make it to air but we recovered the damaged file for the episode and figured out a way to reverse engineer an ending to it. Sometimes you just have to get it done. Join me, just little ol' me and my now and again foul language, to discuss red herd changes (nothing stays the same, does it?), where in the heck my husband has gone off to for so damn long, growing older, day light savings (what suck that is, right?), the possibility that dudes with loud, buzzy, obnoxious little cars might have been born without a penis, and maybe some inside baseball about avoiding trainers who don't feed your baby horse when you send them for training (not MY trainers... mine are amazing), etc. The usual. Not really. Damn it. But we tried. We also wore make up. Our guest, friend and fellow pod caster Kendra McGhaha, and I discuss every thing under sun including our shared love of donkeys, filters on social media, waiting for the other shoe to drop (usually we just Trip Over Flat Surfaces, The Pod Cast- BOOYAH extra points for in-description reference to a Guest's podcast) and then we swapped origin stories for her pod cast and mine. The Red Herd is joined by international artist Ethan Samaha, along with previous co-host Marielle Fontein D'Errico. We talk to this homegrown young artist about all things - big ideas, tiny details,- "great and small." We discuss his first large scale exhibit at The Blikken Hut in Berryville, VA on 24 and 25 June (today and tomorrow). Ethan also gets us caught up on what it's like to work with electricity, the impact of a looming neon shortage (thanks for nothing, Putin, jerk) and how, as I like to point out, "all politics are local." Because we have Marielle Fontein D'Errico, local entrepreneur, fellow window dancer (long story- listen to the podcast), cowgirl worken' off an OTTB, all around tough chick, and international woman of intrigue. We discuss her latest business venture in lovely and authentically quaint Berryville, VA called The Blikken Hut, how she likes ponies too (ponies are wicked and naughty and we like them), all the new opportunities in Clarke County, Virginia (unless you want to subdivide in which case, go away), and how she might have to join the podcast on a regular basis. We threatened. We told you if someone didn't fall on the co-host sword I'd have to bring in the big guns. Well, please meet the big gun at our farm... Mr. McGiggles. Take him with a grain of salt. Or several shot s of your hardest spirits. He's got strong opinions, matched only by his heart of gold, decades of championing the underdog, and a lifetime of liberating the oppressed. Our podcast will allow for opinions and reflections of all manner. Mostly you will hear us banter and mock each other. We call that flirting. Otherwise, we discuss how we met, how we came to buy our property and build our small farm, and other sundry tropics. What the heck is this podcast about? Seriously. It's important for everyone to understand that while I'm clearly obsessed with horses and working cows (I'm also really into those lush pearly lip glosses right now- sorry- I digress), this podcast is about that and more. Not so much about lip gloss. But sometimes. It's about the cowgirl and the cowboy we could all be if we wanted. The farmer inside the city girl. The lumberjack inside the suburban dude. OK. Not so muc h that one maybe. Sorta weird. It's about wanting to connect to something that remains primitive and elemental inside most of us. And yet it seems the world is also moving away from this basic connection to the wild and one another. Our differences seem to define us. But we think there is common ground to find one another and our connection to the wild. For McGiggles, that's me, your host, it's through horses. And ranching when time allows. This episode expands on where we're coming from and where we'd like to arrive. Also, as promised, some awkward moments. It's not like you didn't get a warning order. Thanks for listening. Hi ya'll. As promised, we're back. Final edits are done. So it suddenly occurred to us, oh damn, we need to warn people that we are letting this podcast into the wild. Especially given that my former Green Beret, EXTREMELY extroverted husband will be my first co host (permanent position is still available HINT HINT). So this is just a quick ad to promote what we here in The Red Herd are calling a "soft opening" episode. A dry run. Practice. Expect it to be a little clunky. Things will get better as time goes by.
