Today on the podcast Archbishop Smith is speaking about having a holy relationship with sensual pleasure.
Food, entertainment, sexuality - how do we exercise temperance towards the experience of pleasure?
How can pleasure draw us closer to Christ, rather than farther away?
Today we are on the third and final episode of our “Embrace Limit” miniseries.
There are many different parts of being a Catholic that can seem to limit our freedom, and therefore limit our happiness. But if we look a little closer, sometime the parts of being a follower of Christ that can seem most constraining are the parts that lead to the most freedom and joy! Embrace Limit is a miniseries that explores why the limits of our Catholic faith can lead us to a life of limitless joy and freedom.
Our first Embrace Limit episode focused on the Catholic Church’s teachings on sexuality, including the definition of marriage, contraception and sex outside of marriage. Last week's episode focused on the Catholic concept of vocation.

A follower of Jesus is always in the process of accepting death. Whether that be a spiritual death to self, or acceptance of our mortality, when ever we look at the cross we are reminded of our ultimate destination. This week, for November (the month of the dead), we get into the many questions surrounding death, the decrease in funeral traditions, and the Catholic view of cremation.

Still confused about what the synod was all about? Who responded? Will anything come of it? This week Archbishop Richard Smith is joined by Dr. Eugenia Pagnotta-Kowalczyk, who was responsible for coordinating our local contribution to the global "Synod on Synodality". We examine the main takeaways from the Synthesis Report that Dr. Eugenia wrote, drawing from all the listening sessions and survey submissions.
Almost 350 Synod Listening Sessions were hosted within the Archdiocese of Edmonton, which collected 4000 individual responses to the questions that the Holy Father has to the Church. Those 4000 responses were then distilled into a 10-page Synthesis Report that was prepared by Dr. Eugenia Pagnotta-Kowalczyk. In correspondence with the Archdiocesan Synthesis report, the Archdiocese also hosted a Post Listening Session Discernment meeting with 83 Synod coordinators and leaders from throughout the Archdiocese of Edmonton to review and discuss the data that they received from the thousands of people who participated in the Synod listening sessions. Based on the Archdiocesan Synthesis Report and the presentations made by the local Synod leaders, six initial recommendations have been made for how the Archdiocese can act on the information received from the Synod Listening sessions.

Catholic Education, relations with the Eastern Orthodox, the apparent lack of a Youth Coordinator at the Archdiocese, and more where all asked during our Q&A with Archbishop Richard Smith. The first LIVE recording event started off with His Grace giving the Catholic young adults 3 points of wisdom, and then the question and answer period really tide things together in what turned into an exciting conversation.

"I will not treat the gifts of God as pointless".
Sunday as a day of rest is no longer culturally normative, and we often treat it as a second Saturday. As Catholics, what does it mean to actually rest on the Lord's Day? Do sports count as work? What if I own a business? This week we talk about whether we need to change our behavior to better witness to how we live out our Sundays as Christians.

How much of your income should go to the Church? It's a fairly personal and direct question, and the answer may differ depending on the tradition you come from. This week we ask Archbishop Smith what Catholic's are obligated to to give, and why?

Who are the voices that shape and inform your Catholic faith? Mostly contemporary speakers/celebrities, or traditional voices from the past? This week we react to the buzz around celebrity conversions, like Shia LaBeouf recently, and how much weight to give the countless voices available to us throughout the internet and Church history.

Abortion is the hot topic. And even with the Church's teaching being crystal clear, it is often misrepresented. This week Jenny and Archbishop Smith are joined by Gabrielle Johnson, the Executive Director of the Alberta Life Issues Educational Society, to talk about abortion, the rhetoric around it, and what is being done locally to help women, and their babies, during a crisis pregnancy.
*Gabrielle Johnson is the Executive Director of the Alberta Life Issues Educational Society, a small prolife charity in Alberta. They operate the Back Porch, a pregnancy resource centre, as well as provide community education around life issues. She holds a BA from the University of Alberta and a MA in Philosophy from the University of Leuven.

The music played at mass can often become a lightning rod for disagreements. What instruments are most appropriate? Are hymns necessary? How do we navigate conflict? Archbishop Richard Smith is joined again by Roderick Bryce in tackling these practical questions on Sacred Music!
Roderick Bryce is the Music Director at St. Joseph Basilica. Hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland, Roderick relocated to Stettler, Alberta with his family in July 2013. In Scotland he was in great demand as a baritone, teacher, vocal coach and choral director. As a singer, he is broadcast often on BBC Radio 4 and regularly sang with Cappella Nova, recording music by James Macmillan on Linn Records. Also on Linn Records, he has recorded Bach’s Matthäus-Passion and sung across Scotland, Northern Ireland and France with the Dunedin Consort. He has appeared with Masaaki Suzuki’s Bach Collegium Japan at the Edinburgh International Festival. Roderick was director of the Scottish Chamber Choir; founder and director of Sospiro Baroque and former choirmaster of St Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Edinburgh. In addition to a busy private teaching practice, he also taught singing for City of Edinburgh Council, Loretto School and Fettes College.

What music is appropriate for mass? Is there a right and a wrong to what songs and styles get played? Roderick Bryce joins us so that we can dive deep into what the Church teaches us about sacred music, and what makes it so sacred any way. In this part 1 of our discussion we get into the official teaching and principals, and it part 2 (to be released in a couple weeks) we go in to the practical questions.

Does God have one specific plan for my life? Or is it more like the LIFE board game where I get to choose between a few equally suitable options? Are these questions even helpful when discerning our vocation? So many questions, and this week we're joined again by Fr. Marc to help answer them!
Fr. Marc Cramer has been the vocations director in the Archdiocese of Edmonton for 9 years, and currently is the pastor of St. Charles Catholic Church in Edmonton.

Is there a relationship between how we worship and what we believe? This week, (just in time for Corpus Christi!) we discuss the specifics of how we receive Holy Communion, in the hand or on the tongue, all within the broader principal of "lex orandi lex credendi". Meaning the law of what is prayed is the law of what is believed. And at the end the Archbishop answers a question on ecumenism!
