Memorial Hermann recently implemented Viz.ai, an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven software platform for improving and expediting care for stroke patients. The systemwide rollout began in April 2021 at the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. The Viz.ai system is now fully operational across the entire Memorial Hermann Health System, making Memorial Hermann the largest user of AI-enabled technology for stroke care in the Houston area.

The emergence of new fetal procedures has led to a proliferation of programs using the designation “fetal center” without clarification of what referring physicians and patients should expect in terms of quality, patient safety and outcomes. Though some etiologies of pediatric facial palsy are self-limiting, congenital and long-standing facial palsies pose difficult challenges that require
a combination of surgical, adjunctive, and rehabilitative techniques to achieve facial reanimation. Given the spectrum of ages and symptom severity, as well as the various surgical options available for facial palsy, a tailored approach needs to be developed for each child to restore facial balance and function.

Only a very small amount of the chemotherapeutic drugs given systemically for the treatment of pediatric brain tumors actually reaches the brain, due to the blood-brain barrier’s efficiency at excluding the entry of most agents that circulate in the blood. As a result, the current outlook for children with recurrent malignant brain tumors is extremely poor. To address this issue, Dr. David Sandberg, is enrolling patients in new studies with novel therapies that inject medications directly into the fourth ventricle of the brain to potentially improve outcomes for children with brain tumors.

After more than a decade of work, the Tracheal Occlusion To Accelerate Lung Growth (TOTAL) Trial was published. This trial showed a survival benefit for fetuses with very high-risk Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) who underwent the Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion (FETO) procedure. In the ongoing effort to provide optimal care for patients, The Fetal Center, affiliated with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, and UT Physicians, has been offering FETO for the prenatal treatment of CDH through participation in both the Severe and Moderate Arms of the TOTAL Trial.
As a recognized, international leader in the prenatal diagnosis and management of CDH, Anthony Johnson D.O., Co-Director of The Fetal Center, worked closely with Professor Deprest (the study’s lead author and principle investigator) to lead the process of bringing the trial to the U.S., enrolling and managing these patients, and co-authoring the publications in the New England Journal of Medicine. As one of only 10 U.S. fetal centers granted FDA to offer FETO intervention and the only fetal center in the U.S. to participate in both arms of the TOTAL Trial, the Comprehensive Center for CDH Care and the entire team at UTHealth and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital are actively engaged and dedicated to improving outcomes for all patients with CDH – mild, moderate, or severe.
