Women Bridge the Gap is a free-wheeling, conversation podcast co-hosted by Lenya Wilson and Alexandra D’Italia
Alexandra and Lenya discuss the balances of both doing work, and doing the work. First work/life balance is addressed, and how we’re also facing hustle culture. Behaviors from this capitalistic pressure can be seen in the students in Alexandra’s classroom. And both describe how they have been using social media to engage and distance themselves from what they need to. -- We want to hear from you! Still Processing the Dobbs Decision Just a nice easy laid-back episode about abortion. We need to talk about vaginas more, and this is the perfect place to start. Alexandra and Lenya both share their own abortion stories, and discuss the anxieties of kids coming of age in a society that restricts abortion. Alexandra also reads an incredible poem by Jacaranda School for Orphan’s student Felicia Luciano called Our Members of Parliament. A poignant and direct statement in beautiful language. https://www.plannedparenthood.org -- We want to hear from you! Let us know how you’re speaking about these issues with your friends. Kadeem goes over how he got started, what it takes to be a Ninja, some of the differences between the American and Australian shows, and his training practice. Where is the line between breaking the law and being a crappy person? That’s just the first thing on the agenda today. Lenya and Alexandra are together again and the conversation goes from sexual assult on social media, to Bill Clinton and abuse of power, naturally, and transitions to Formula 1, Star Trek, and the war on Ukraine. Events like these can bring to light a lot of racism that we all just live with and think is the norm, until the flashlight of light-skin elluminates the evils we have all accepted. -- Please rate and review this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. It’s our 50th episode! Thank you all for listening, sharing, commenting, subscribing, and everything! We have the Super Bowl halftime show conversation we promised last time. Where is the line between wearing something for yourself, and wearing what a patriarchal society has conditioned you to want to wear? Continuing on the musician topic, Alexandra and Lenya discuss artists like Michael Jackson and others who have fallen from grace, and what to do with the art of “monstars”, or people who have been, or should be, canceled. -- Please rate and review this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. Jumping right into it this episode with discussions of white fragility, and how easily and unwillingly it can present itself. Lenya brings in some tales of people whitesplaining on TikTok, and they discuss the fear regarding critical race theory. Alexandra brings up a good point about past life regression for white people, and what racism you’ll find in your past. They just had so much to talk about, that they’re going to have to put off the Super Bowl halftime show until next week! Send us your thoughts on that and everything we discussed on the episode. Your favorite ladies are back at it again! And jumping right into it with fresh rants and raves. Well, not many raves, not much to rave about, but plenty to rant about. Lenya has a big decision to make. She was invited to the USA Power Lifting competition, but they ban trans people. So she’s weighing if she should go and try to speak up about her views, or not go in protest. There are difficult and strong views on both sides. What do you think, listener? Let us know via email or social! We want to hear from you. Alexandra got some frank news from her doctor, and it was a bitter pill to swallow. It’s the final episode of the season and the year! Lenya and Alex have some holiday stories to tell, and they are good ones! Lenya went to her white neighbor’s house for Thanksgiving dinner where the topic of race and police violence came up. Lenya spoke out about policing injustice, and was met with, well, the reaction you probably expect but also can not believe. What’s great though is that this story has a very happy ending. Less happy are two more stories of police interacting with Lenya and Alex at points in their lives, and how the police took things too far, and how their skin color affected how each of them acted and felt. Be sure to stay subscribed for when we return we'll check in on New Year's resolutions, and make some new ones for the coming year. Lenya performed at a weightlifting competition last week and is here to tell ua all about it. Not only did she tell us about how she won and what it was like, but explained the sport and the competition, how it’s judged, and what comes next. Holidays are coming up, so we discuss what we have planned, and how we plan to not eat too much, famous last words. But don’t think we just forgot about race issues, rounding out the episode we discuss Kyle Writtenhouse’s trial, the murder of Ahmaud Arbery and how that trial is getting less attention, and the overall weight of news today.
