I'm fortunate to have frequent conversations on this Pod that transform how I think about our world. And this conversation transformed me more than most. I hadn't seen the Emmy award winning Netflix show "Love on the Spectrum" before I met its supporting star, Devin Morrissey. My eyes were opened in April when I saw him on a panel at the Autism Investor Summit that gave me profound new insights into the world of a self-described "autistic powerhouse." Devin is SO authentic in who he is ... is SO reflective of his experiences (the good, the bad and everything in between) ... is SO gratitude-forward when he describes his life, his city (LA), his girlfriend (Andrea) and all that he's been through. Amber's a classic CEO/Entrepreneur/Founder: she's started an ABA practice, a global non-profit, she's starred in documentaries. I'll highlight two (of many) things I appreciated about our conversation 1) her international non-profit - focusing on parent-training & parent-led interventions - not only addresses supply/demand imbalances for BCBAs/RBTs globally ... it's potentially a model that payers here in the US (that's you, Tricare) are actively exploring; could that be a future for ABA? 2) she's a passionate advocate for women founders/entrepreneurs, as am I. I've always been intrigued by the question: "is a little ABA better than none at all?" Some people/agencies I speak with insist on clinical models that conform exactly to clinical prescriptions and the traditional 2-tiered model of ABA. I totally agree ... as long as families have that option. But what about families in rural areas? Or families of older kiddos who sit on interminable waitlists and can't get services? It feels like they deserve the life-changing power of our science as much as any other family. This conversation with Jeff Beck, co-founder and CEO of Answers Now, helped inform my thinking: with newer technologies, previously unreachable kiddos with autism can now get some form of ABA and that feels worthwhile. Dr. Rachel Taylor is the newest-elected Director of the CASP Board of Directors and a longtime ABA business owner/operator. When her son was diagnosed and she was seeking therapy, her reaction was "we know how to do this better." That's been the basis of her decades long passion for highest quality ABA programs and advocacy in our communities. I'm fascinated by the intersection of digital health and behavioral healthcare. After all, if more of our lives are moving online, wouldn't our therapy trend in that direction too? Before I joined the autism services field (in 2012), I spent 6+ years in outdoor education non-profits, including starting and growing my own non-profit, Sierra Nevada Journeys, from 2006-2012. I had to learn the hard way about grants and fundraising and I wished I had a guide like Rachael. Rachael comes from the IDD/ABA world and her specialty (in addition to leading operations) is grant-writing ... including finding grants that for-profit providers can apply for (candidly, I didn't even know that was a thing before I met Rachael). Rachael was so helpful that I actually worked with her on a grant for Ascend Behavior Partners (my ABA organization). Great tips and tricks to up your grantwriting game. Enjoy, kind listener!

I met Dr. Darren Sush at the Autism Law Summit in 2022 (Oklahoma City) and I couldn't wait for this conversation given the recently announced partnership between Cigna/Evernorth and the Behavioral Health Center of Excellence on outcomes and value-based care. I'm a HUGE fan of accreditation ... a HUGE fan of the BHCOE ... a HUGE fan of quantified outcomes (as a pre-cursor to value-based care) ... so this was as homerun before I even hit the recording studio. Move knowledge, not patients." That, my friends, is the definition of root-causing the immense supply/demand imbalance we see in ABA ... and across healthcare. And that's exactly what Alicia Curran and Dr. Kristin Sohl are doing with Project ECHO autism. I first met them for an ECHO training in New Mexico in 2019 and I was ENRAPTURED by how they're turning medicine on its head by focusing on empowering front-line clinical teams. For instance, imagine a program that trains/supports pediatricians to make effective autism diagnoses ... or nurse practitioners to work with people experiencing kidney failure. Because it just doesn't seem possible - nor practical - to increase the number of psychologists and nephrologists. But with ECHO? Anything is possible. Enjoy, kind listener!
