Primitive Man Soundz so far has been primarily an online publication that has focused on the bands from the 60s & 70s. More specifically, the various approaches and attitudes behind the different heavy underground rock scenes around the world. Starting a podcast gives even more ground for these artists' to be able to share their stories like never before. I was recently invited by Buddy Slowik, the host of Mississippi's Supertalk. Born and raised in Florida, Richard Maddox began playing music just like any other kid. Influenced by The Beatles, amongst others, until it was his turn to create music! He eventually met his bandmates and formed a unique band, like many, that would come and go... Masalla are a Daytona, FL based heavy rock/psych group that released one single in 1970 on the Climax label that is pure earthquake bliss in the ear! It was pleasure speaking with Maddox about growing up, his love and passion for music, Masalla and yes... The reissue of this record from Ancient Grease that is coming for very soon, so stay tuned! New York based group Unsettled Society released a few singles on the Pete Huntley label called Charm in the mid/late 60s before the group transitioned to Thunderhead. Cappelletti played rhythm guitar and sang lead vox in the band(s) and after suffering a near fatal car crash, that left Mike permanently injured, it's safe to say he was supposed to continue on as a ROCKER! I've been working on nailing this interview down through Mike's oldest son for quite sometime and I'm glad to finally release this episode of the podcast today. Enjoy!

I wanted to track down an interesting subject from the legendary Woodstock festival. I've had the pleasure fo speaking to a few artists that played, but no one that actually attended the festival. That was until I located Mike Greenblatt, a writer, freelance journalist and in 2019 he published his first novel "Woodstock 50th Anniversary: Back To Yasgur's Farm" which also included a foreword by the legendary Country Joe McDonald! Greenblatt is a purist when it comes to music. His love for the arts is outstanding and inspiring and though he's older than me, I feel we're the same in many ways. We came from the same generation of thought, the same energy source, the same cosmic womb... WE ARE THE PEOPLE! It was wonderful speaking to Greenblatt and hearing his legendary tales of attending the greatest and most terrifying festival in rock history, Woodstock! You had to be there in many ways, but hopefully this a kaleidoscope into that prismatic void for anyone that missed it, which was most of us. Enjoy!

Born and raised in Sol-Cal, D'Agostino was bitten by the "Sabbath" bug at the early age of seven and from them on, this has inspired and manifested the trajectory of, not only his music taste, but his life! In 2003 D'Agostino purchased one, if not the, most valuable and rarest piece in rock history. The unheard Black Sabbath Acetate! This is the kind of stuff that only legends are made of and that's exactly what our conversation entails! Joe's a nice guy and is very passionate about music and music history, so this conversation was fluid and natural. A folk legend from Maine, Bill Stone recorded his lone LP masterpiece in 1970 entitled "Stone" at just the age of 19/20 with his friends and local talent from the community. Having been done wrong buy the label head, nothing new there, he decided to pursue other ventures in his life and relocated here in TN for awhile while attending Vanderbilt for his doctorate in the 80s before moving back to Maine. Stone never stopped playing music throughout the years and still jams to this day! It was a real pleasure speaking to the man behind such an extraordinary record in this short, but revealing and calm interview. Enjoy!

Canadian/British based trio, May Blitz is by far one of the most popular and influential groups to come out of the scene in the early 70's. Having been label mates with bands such as Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep and Jade Warrior, May Blitz would go on to release two incredible studio records and then 2012's live "Essen" album before the smoke settled. It was amazing to finally have the opportunity to speak with Reid as we started our correspondence back in October of 2021 and finally its hear. The MAY BLITZ episode, enjoy!

Witch are single handedly one of the most influential groups to come out of what is known as the Zamrock scene back in 1970s. A group that took Western influences like Deep Purple, The Led, Jimi Hendrix and completely ran with it making it their very own. It was a true honor and privilege to be able to speak with Emmanuel as this has been something we've been working on together for quite some time and I'm stoked to finally share this episode of the podcast. Bastidas is an incredible artist born and raised in California. I first became aware of his work through the wonderful world of skateboarding and as the years have gone by I've noticed his work appearing in other places. Different yet familiar. BB recently did a series of paintings for Creature Skateboards and has been part of a very prominent and growing company called CLSICS/ROSIN and many other great ventures! It was a real trip speaking to the man behind the wonderful paintings I've been seeing over the last 4, or 5 years and stoked to have had the chance to speak with him. Enjoy!

The Cross Bloods were an interracial group that formed in Maryland and recorded only one single, but mind you its a blister of a record! It was a trip speaking with Andy, who is closer to where I live than I thought, about his time as the drummer in the band as well as his parents being the sole investors in the bands short, but impactful career. In Season 2 I had the pleasure of speaking with Gold guitarist Ed Scott about the group, but this is a perspective you don't hear too often and thats management! Cabral, along with his brother Dennis, participated in the band's legend after they formed in '68, but Ron was more on the management side of things as he helped with the groups gigs and so forth. Cabral was in the NAVY from '59 to '61/'62 with none other than the legendary Country Joe! Having taught grade school, Ron eventually hung up his music management hat and focused on his teaching career, as well as writing and publishing two books! Enjoy

Head honcho of SoCal based label Riding Easy Records, Daniel Hall has single handedly done exactly what he sat out to do and thats his own thing. From working in the corporate rock world during the 90s and into the 2000s, to DJing, Hall has made his way from one realm to the next until he decided to start up his very own label in 2013. Now coming up on it's 10th anniversary, Hall and everyone involved with the label have no intentions of stopping anytime soon! This was by far the most radical trip I've ever been on since I started the podcast. I've was familiar with The Source Family and Father Yod for years and was completely blown away when I finally had the opportunity to speak to one of the legendary guitarists from the family and group, Djin Aquarian. Frijid Pink is a personal group for me. A band I listened to with my close friends back home during high school and more specifically the track "God Gave Me You". That is a song that is in the top 10 no doubt. This episode has been a long time coming and not because this is the first episode of season 3, but because originally it was supposed to be a written interview for the online publication portion of Primitive Man Soundz! I couldn't resist... I needed to launch season 3 after a much needed hiatus this past few weeks and I don't think theres a better band nor musician to do that with. Enjoy!

One of the first bands I was turned on to from the ever growing, deep rooted underground sound that is the 1970's. I feel like I should mention that I find myself not so much motivated to listen to a live record. But this... This is pure insanity! Having never played live before and with only a short time to practice and rehearse, this band truly made magic that evening in Hawaii and Dale is here to tell the story and set the record straight! It was a pleasure not only meeting Dale, but to hear his amazing story and career in music. We believe he is the only surviving member of the band and with that information, makes this even more special and spectacular. Sit back, tune it and as always... Enjoy!

It was a great pleasure to do a duo episode with the guys as they briefly share the legacy of The Flesh Eaters as well as their current projects. TFE impacted and altered the Hollywood/LA scene in the late 70's and into the early 80's. They blended and liquified genres their entire career and as of recently they've gotten back together! It was rad to not only meet the legendary Chris D. in this brief encounter, but that of Larry Schemel's, as he's performed with Death Valley Girls, Midnight Movies, Kill Sybil and of course The Flesh Eaters. Based out of the Mission District in 1960's San Francisco, Gold were among some of the most unique and dedicated bands to come out of that time period. Sharing the stage as well as the same bill with the likes of Hot Tuna, Ten Years After, Mike Bloomfield and so many more, thy paved their way by performing live and practicing 5 days a week. Even though they had a few singles under the belt, they unfortunately didn't have a record deal. As time moves forward, so does everyone and everything, but Ed has managed to keep the Gold legacy going! They have FINALLY released their long awaited music after nearly 50 years since they first formed and Ed is looking to keep the band going and playing for as long as he can. Enjoy!

Jeffrey Pezzati is a Chicago legend to say the least! Having played in bands such as Naked Raygun, Big Black and The Bomb, Pezzati has laid down the groundwork and inspired so many bands and generations to come. I'll never forget the first time I really heard Mission Of Burma and where I was in life at that time. This is a band I find myself always going back to just like Nirvana. Completely original and incredibly talented individuals. MOB formed out of Boston in '79 and by the time the early 80's rolled around they had already disbanded. But they left an impact on the generations to come and its as clear as day who it is and where it came from. It was a pleasure speaking to Peter about his life growing up, when he began playing music, attending shows in the punk and hardcore scene and of course, playing drums in MOB. As of late, Prescott has another outfit called Minibeast who has recently released a new album. Enjoy!

Chris Corsano's drumming and general approach to his art is simply immeasurable. His influences are personal and are respectively explored, but Corsano has defined his on place in the 'code breaking', free-improve Matrix that he dwells. Groups such as Sun City Girls, Ruins, Boredoms, The Bishops and so many others led me to his work , as well as his own influences, over the years and even inspired and influenced my very own approach to music. Norman Westberg participated in one of the most mind altering, soul crushing, yet gorgeous and serene, groups to emerge in the last 40 years. We know of so many bands that were influenced by Swans, so it was very humbling to hear what influenced Westberg and his approach to the music that he wanted to make during his multi decade participation in the group. A groundbreaking and unique guitarist, Westberg joined Swans after the release of their EP and the rest is well... History! It was an honor and privilege to speak to this legend as I've personally been a huge fan and admirer of his prolific body of work for some time now. It doesn't get any heavier than this. Enjoy!

I don't think this band needs any introduction. If you're into the heavy underground 70s rock scene, as I'm sure you are if you're listening to this, then you know Josefus. I originally contacted Mitchell sometime last year, but due to the unforeseen circumstances that this last few years has unfortunately provided us, we put it off until now. All of the amazing TX bands that stem from Josefus (Come, Stone Axe, United Gas and Christopher), are all equal parts of this incredible legend that is late 60s/early 70's TX. Dave and other original members of the band are currently working on a new album and DVD that will come out hopefully sooner rather than later, so keep your ears and eyes open for that. Enjoy!

Without a doubt, Fugazi was and still is, one of the most influential, original and groundbreaking groups to hit the scene in the late 80s and throughout the 90s/early 2000's. A super group of sorts to storm out of Dischord Records with their debut EP in '88, Fugazi went on to write and record some of the most powerful records until their indefinite breakup in 2003. It was a pleasure and honor speaking to Joe Lally about growing up, his relationship with music, becoming a musician, joining Fugazi and so much more! German based group Gift released two records and a single between 1972 and 1974 before splitting up. But with a successful reunion over the years, the group still has a story to tell! Prior to Gift, the band was originally called Phallus Dei (look up the translation), but with an angry church on their backs they changed their name to Gift, which I understand has two meanings. I did a written interview with member Rainer Baur a few months back, but I always wanted to circle back to doing an episode on the podcast with someone else from the band. Helmuth has released a large body of work over the years that ranges in all genres and after the band was said and done in the mid 70's, he got a degree and career in chemistry. It was awesome catching up with Helmuth and talking about old times with Gift, the current state of things, what he's been up to in recent years and much more. Enjoy!

Bob Bert was part of a stellar generation that got to see the likes of The Talking Heads, The Cramps, The Gun Club, Ramones, just to name a few, come up in the mid/late 70s New York. Bert witnessed some of the most influential bands, but also participated in some of the most influential bands of his generation. That being Sonic Youth in the early/mid 80's. I can honestly say without a shred of doubt, that Sonic Youth are one of my favorite groups, so the honor and privilege to speak to this legend was simply mind blowing! After Sonic Youth, Bert went on to participate in groups such as Pussy Galore, Bewitched, Chrome Cranks and Lydia Lunch. As of late, Bert has been in playing in Lydia Lunch Retrovirus and has recently written a novel! Enjoy!

Robert "Bubba" Keith is a very talented musician and writer that from an early age, knew he wanted to be a rockstar! After participating in a few groups, Keith and some of his friends set out for LA with their eclectic group, Uncle Tom to try and reach for their dreams. After many years and everyone moving back home, Keith finally got his break when asked to join the legendary Ohio based band, James Gang! The band shortly thereafter recorded their studio album 'Newborn' in 1975 and the rest is... well history! Keith has lived the rockstar life, but he's transcended that lifestyle and leads a more laid back, still rockin', philosophical journey that has made for a wonderfully connecting conversation. Enjoy!

Edward Colver is one of the most groundbreaking and essential photographers of the last 20th century. A self taught master of his craft, he has single handedly captured the hardcore/punk scene of the late mid/late 70s into the early/mid 80s. I don't think theres a single person out there thats not been in his viewfinder at some point in time. The list is out of control and I personally do not have enough characters to type them out. But I will mention, most notably, that he's responsible for the the cover of Black Flag's "Damage", Circle Jerks' "Group Sex" LP, and live photos/group shots/self-portraits of artists such as Andy Warhol, Bad Brains, Wasted Youth, Nick Cave, Ice Cube, RHCP and many many more. It was a true honor and privilege to speak to the legend. If your a skateboarder then you know of Corey's incredible career that has spanned over the last 20 years. His style and grace on the board is as important as it is off the board. He gave his generation of skateboarding a true sense of fashion, culture and purpose. One of the many things I admire, and have for many years, about Corey is his youthful approach to virtually everything he does. It comes out in his personality and especially in his work. As of recently, Corey has launched his own skateboard brand called "Adored". It is his love-letter(s) to skateboarding and all things that inspire him. Born and raised in CO, Sunny moved to Portland, OR where she eventually met her future bandmates, started a kickass all women rock band, quickly signed to RidingEasy Records and moved to LA! Salli Sachse is an American actress, model, photographer, painter from San Diego, CA that has had such a rich and impactful career that took place in the mid/late 60's. She has stared in films along side legends such as Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern and so many more! Salli shot photos of CSN&Y in the early days and became close friends with a lot of the music legends in the scene during that time. She even had a song written about her by Jackson Browne! I first became aware of Sachse and her work from the 1967 film "The Trip" that stared Peter Fonda and from then on out I was a fan! Sit back as Sachse takes us on a mystical journey through Laurel Canyon, abroad and dozens of other locations as we surf through her memory and legacy. Enjoy!

Smokin' Joe was one of the earliest social media accounts I started following during the pandemic that showcased rare and underground music that I would soon find myself obsessing over as time went on. His curation of incredible titles was something of a positive sight during this whole ordeal we've all been grinding through this past few years. Macchia recently started DJing on 103.3wwro with his Friday night show 'Hi Fi Dream Machine' that showcases underground rock, world music, the classics and everything else under the sun! You feel like you know someone well before you actually meet them in life. Everyone has had that experience, but more than not, you actually become friends with them! I was first introduced to Marco and his incredible photography through skateboarding. He's shot some of the absolute greats of our generation and just last year, his photo of TFunk was used for the cover of Thrasher's December issue and was actually the last issue of the 40th anniversary! Co-owner of Rockadelic Records, Rich Haupt has single handedly helped fuel the obscure underground rock appreciation for decades and has brought it to the attention of thousands from all over the world! If you've ever listened to these groups and I imagine you have if you are a listener of the podcast, then you have most likely come across a group that Rockadelic has lend a hand in helping to uncover. I spoke with Rich about the label, his great appreciation for music and the psychedelic landscape that certain types of bands create for its listeners. A mysterious band born out of Michigan in the late 60s and into the very early 70's. Mystic Siva are just that... Mystic! An album that was created by a bunch of kids and recorded by one of their high-school band teachers in 1970. And then poof... Everyone vanished into thin air and so did the record. But the legend grew and grew until it became one of the most unique and rare records in underground American psych lore over the last half century. I had been in contact with Mark for a few months prior to our conversation, and in just the last few weeks he unfortunately lost his wife to Covid, so we had to put a holt on our project. I can honestly say without a shred of doubt that Orang-Utan are one of my personal favorites and one of the first heavy underground 70s groups I started listening to when venturing into that endless well of content. They had such an original sound and a fast forward energy that some bands simply lacked, whilst balancing the rest of the elements that make up a rock band back in those days. I searched high n' low for an existing member and I'm excited to finally share this episode of the podcast with my special guest and guitarist Mick Clarke of London's Orang-Utan as well as the Roy Young Band! Paul Anthony Gurvitz 6th july 1944 High Wycombe Buckinghamshire England is a multi platinum song writer
who's musical journey started at the age of 15 . He bought his first guitar in a local store for 12 pounds and signed his first publishing contract at the age of 16 and has since written countless hits for many artist's including his first hit Race With The Devil with his band "GUN' which some say was the beginning of what they call metal music today.
In 1964 he embarked on his touring and performing career as a guitarist with his bands The Londoners , The Knack , Parrish & Gurvitz which was produced by the infamous Sir George Martin and then switched to bass with Gun , Three Man Army , The Graeme Edge Band and The Baker Gurvitz Army which featured Cream drummer Ginger Baker. Now living in Arizona Paul is still an active song writer and has released several solo albums and is now embarking on another journey with his new band The New Army..
It all started back in the early sixties. I was listening to Elvis, Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard & The Shadows and at the age of 15 I bought my first guitar. My father at that time was the Road Manager for the Shadows, so I started to get a taste of the music scene. I taught myself to play a few chords and it wasn't long before I was playing in some local bands. My first professional gig was in France playing on US Army camps. From there I came to to England with the same band and started to play gigs around London, that group was called The Londoners.
We were then booked to play the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. After spending six months in the Star Club we began playing all over Germany at different venues.
Once again I returned to London with The Londoners and decided to change the name of the group to The Knack. The Knack was signed to several different labels and recorded several singles for Pye and Decca. A short while after, the psychedelic era started and once again I changed the name of the band to The Gun. The Gun started to slowly get noticed around the London clubs and by 1968 had their first hit record, that was "Race With The Devil". It went to number 4 in the English charts and number 1 in most European charts. The Gun recorded 2 albums "Gun" and Gunsight". In 1971 The Gun broke up and I started a group called Parrish & Gurvitz, which was produced by George Martin. There were two albums recorded but only one was released called "Parrish & Gurvitz". That band toured the US and the UK. At the same time I was recording with my brother Adrian with "Three Man Army". After Parrish & Gurvitz broke up Three Man Army became a touring band and recorded three albums in all, "A Third Of A Lifetime", "Mahesha" and "Three Man Army Two .
Three Man Army was getting ready for a fourth album but the drummer (Tony Newman) was asked to join David Bowie. That left my brother and I with no drummer, but not long after we teamed up with Ginger Baker and started a new group. This was "The Baker Gurvitz Army". B.G.A. (as it was called) recorded the first album titled "Baker Gurvitz Army" and then took on two more members for touring. The second B.G.A. album recorded was "Elysian Encounter" and the third was "Hearts On Fire". During the recordings of B.G.A., my brother and I teamed up with the drummer of the "Moody Blues" Graeme Edge, and recorded two more albums. The band was called "The Graeme Edge Band". The first album was "Kick Off Your Muddy Boots" and the second was "Paradise Ballroom".
In 1976 the manager of B.G.A. was killed in a plane crash and that was the end of "The Baker Gurvitz Army".

In 1970, Eric Turner grew into a more progressive form of rock music after a split from The Tropics, so together with Charlie Souza and Bill Peterson, BACCHUS was born. After many record releases, they were the opening act for GRAND FUNK, FREE, LYNNRD SKYNNRD, BB KING, CACTUS, THE OUTLAWS, REDBONE, EDGAR WINTER, and TED NUGENT. The band went on the USO Tour in Puerto Rico and then had the honor to open a Florida concert for MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, Bacchus also appeared on the free stage at the Atlanta Pop Festival just before Grand Funk Railroad on the main stage. It was a pleasure speaking to the guys in this full band episode! Formed in late '69, The Bolton Iron Maiden were a heavy blues, proto metal group from Bolton, UK that lasted form 1970-1976 before the untimely death of Ian Boulton Smith "aka" Beak. This episode is dedicated to the late Raven who unfortunately passed away of a stroke on the 22nd of October in 2013. I spoke to Raven's longtime friend and brother-in-law, Michael Flugge, about growing up in Columbus, Ohio, when he initially met Raven and the legend that is the "Back To The Ohio Blues" record that was release in 1975 on OWL records. Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, DeTray moved to Ohio and was swept up by the increasing rise of American psychedelia in 1960's. He would soon tap direct into the main line in San Francisco and quickly found himself wanting to start a band and participate in the rise of the movement. Dodging the ridiculous draft of the Vietnam war, DeTray fled to Canada where he would eventually start the Ant Trip Ceremony and the rest is history! It was a real TRIP speaking with DeTray about his life growing up in Kenya, moving back to the states and starting one of the coolest underground bands of the 60's and eventually joining a cult! The frontman of one of Ohio's most legendary heavy rock groups, Poobah, has been releasing music keeping his musical vision alive for over half a century. A lot of groups from that decade burn out quickly, but Gustafson. His prolific approach to music has increased in speed and cosmic velocity! Previously known as The Sound Barrier, Noah were a heavy psych rock and heavy organ based group out of Ohio that recorded a sublime record in 1972 that has stood the test of time. Recently reissued on Guerssen Records, their music captures a heady spiritualism as well as the necessary elements it takes truly to be in a rock and roll band! Twitch were an incredibly dark, mystical, and theatrical force that came out of Canada during the 1970's. Their live performances were filled with stunning occult elements that would leave the audience spellbound with memories they were sure to never forget! The band recorded a handful of amazing singles throughout its lifespan. B their lone full length LP, that was recorded in'74, wouldn't see the light of day for nearly 50 years until the captain of Supreme Echo Records, Jason Flower excavated from the earth giving the proper release that it deserved! It was a trip speaking with Ian and hearing all his wonderful memories of before, during and after the band and its incredible resurrection and appreciation after all these years. Enjoy!

I can honestly say that Pentagram is one of my favorite heavy groups from the decade of the 70's. A very reminiscent band from my youth, it was a true honor and privilege to do this episode with the great Bobby Liebling. Everyone knows of Pentagram. You may not know all the history, or the fine details, but you know of the band and the incredible legacy they've left on rock n' roll. Born in La Linea, Spain, Manny moved to Scotland with his family at a very young age in the early 1940s. Charlton would soon begin playing in bands such as Mark 5 and Red Hawks before lending a hand in co-founding the legendary group, Nazareth. Growing up, Nazareth was featured in one of my favorite movies growing up called "Lords Of Dog-town", so it was a trip to have had the opportunity to speak with this legend and to see what happened all those years ago! I don't think it can get any heavier than this! I spoke to my friend Clayton Burgess of the legendary Satan's Satyrs and Electric Wizard about all things heavy and man let me tell you, it was everything I thought it would be! Born and raised in Virginia and quickly became obsessed with groups such as Black Flag, Sabbath, Pentagram and all the underground heavies I know the listeners love and appreciate. Burgess would soon start his own group, Satan's Satyrs, and would go on to record the first album all by himself and even playing all the instruments himself before it became an official group that would go on to release half a dozen incredible records before laying it to bed in 2019. Burgess joined the almighty Electric Wizard during that period and well... the rest is history! Enjoy!

Ellison were an incredibly powerful and emotional band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada that began in the mid/late 60's before disbanding in the early/mid 70's. Being one of my personal favorites, I was completely blown away when I was finally able to locate Vincent as I had tried to do this in the past, but always came up short. It was a true pleasure speaking to this legend about his early days of playing music, meeting his future bandmates and starting a most unique band that went on to record a powerhouse of a record. Salem Mass were a heavy synthesizer based group founded by keyboardist Jim Klahr from Caldwell, Idaho in the early 70s. They leaned more on the occult side of things as they powered through the mid west on a psychedelic voyage of Mary-Prankster esque shenanigans. With a few different line up changes, guitarist Timothy Pyle found himself joining the cosmic caravan and the rest is history! I searched high and low for any of the members that may still be around and after surrendering to the silence for what seemed like an eternity, the light on the porch on the edge of the universe came on!
