Does a child’s background predetermine their success in school and beyond? Jo Welter asked herself this question as she began her role as a superintendent in Ambridge, PA. She grappled with the many human struggles her students faced daily, and decided to embark on a journey with a literacy study that changed the trajectory of her schools’ outcomes. She learned that when teachers and administrators are determined to use reading research and meet students where they are, every child can learn to read.
