Ken and I had a hoot talking about adventure as a ten year old at Marvel Con ‘75, the first hosted by Marvel Comics Group. Did he meet STan? Did he pose with Red Sonja? Did he put his face in a cut-out? The pictures tell the tale…but why not listen to Ken himself? Look him up on imdb for a big smile, too.
It’s really simple audio, but it was a very fun show before about 20 kids, mostly 3-5 year olds.

Marvel Comic Con in 1975 was the very first convention hosted by the Marvel Comics Group itself- and Sam Maronie was there! Here’s a few minutes with his eyewitness account, including his meeting with Jack Kirby. Sam shot most of the existing high quality photos from the event that you still see today- and continues photographing comics convention the nation over. Sam’s also produced a book: Tripping Through Pop Culture: The (Mis) Adventures of a Pop Culture writer, with a cover by the acclaimed Joe Phillips! It’s also got a foreword from Scott Edelman, who you see in the silly picture above with legendary inker Joe Sinnott- our next guest on Creating Marvels!

DAK picks up from part one (Creating Marvels podcast 5, which you can find on Podbean here), telling chronologically about the series he wrote, including insights into the heroes, especially the origins of Hellcat’s lingo and her deeper psychology.
Part One asks what has been special about choosing to become a comics creator, to the man who broke in as regular Spider-man artist with maybe fandom most beloved short story! Ron had drawn KA-ZAR, STAR WARS, and some issues of MARVEL TEAM-UP when he was tapped to turn Roger Stern’s dream into the eleven page “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man.” (”Kid” is from Amazing Spider-Man #248, from 1983.)
Now we revisit its creation with Ron, who talks about stewardship of long-time characters, but also introduces us to his very latest co-creation (with TV comedy writer Darin Henry): The Blue Baron, from Sitcomics (click and see!)

How did that story depict Luke, keep him unique and speak to his identity as a character, rather than random cypher super heroes? It touches upon some frighteningly contemporary elements, too.
