Sitting at the table this time with Shonitria to talk about all things cannabis and motherhood: Angie Stocker aka Highly Angie along with the hosts of the "Good Moms Bad Choices" podcast Erica and Jamilah. The ladies share how they approached cannabis use during pregnancy and breastfeeding... reflecting on what we didn't know back then with what we do know now. We also get honest about how we really feel about the judgment we as cannamoms face from others, and how we deal with it. Plus, what do you do when your partner doesn't want to "let" you use cannabis because you're the mom now of their kid? Welp, we got the answer for ya!

Dr. Miyabe Shields, Ph.D., who prefers they/them pronouns, joins this episode of the Blunt Blowin' Mama podcast to get into the science behind our favorite plant: cannabis! Miyabe is a pharmaceutical scientist who specializes in the molecules in cannabis and the system in the brain and body that are activated by them.

Some questions Miyabe answers (because the more we know!) in their conversation Shonitria: Why is it that some people don't get high after ingesting edibles? Does smoking weed harm our brains and "fry" our brain cells? In what ways can cannabis help neurodivergent people? What does science say about using cannabis as a mom? And what's the cleanest way to ingest cannabis... edibles, tinctures, dry herb vaping, dabbing, joints, etc?

It's always wonderful to chat about cannabis with a scientist who studies the plant to help us understand the plant even more. Sahra is a mom who smokes weed and founded the popular Isankofa Skin Care, where she creates affordable small-batch skin care products with all-natural ingredients. She believes everyone deserves to access quality skin products without the hefty price tag. Sahra joins the Blunt Blowin' Mama podcast to discuss how cannabis helps her as a mom and business owner. She comes from a family where weed was normal, as her Rasta father was a regular cannabis consumer who sometimes would give her cannabis tea as a child for ailments. Her father normalized cannabis as medicine to her, and she takes the same approach now that she's a mom.

Shonitria has been a long-time fan of Isankofa's zinc deodorant (it's natural, organic, and there's no added fragrance — perfect for sensitive skin!), natural gold face serum, and herbal face toner. There's something for everyone; the best part is that you won't hurt your wallet! To celebrate the podcast episode, Isankofa is offering up to 20% off sitewide. So don't walk; run to stock up or discover your new skincare faves, too :).

This 420 episode of the Blunt Blowin' Mama podcast is sponsored by The Travel Agency -- Shonitria's fave legal NYC dispensary. Arana joins this episode to chat about what it's like being a cannamom working in the legal weed industry.

Drop by The Travel Agency's newest location in Downtown Brooklyn and let 'em know Blunt Blowin' Mama sent you: https://www.thetravelagency.co/

Follow The Travel Agency on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetravelagency.co

Arana says she never felt the stigma on weed until she started working in the industry. She's the president and co-founder of The Travel Agency, a BIPOC-founded company that believes legal cannabis has the power to repair the damage caused by the war on drugs.

The Travel Agency is a purpose-driven business, with the brand new Downtown Brooklyn store owned by those who have experienced cannabis-related injustices and their Union Square dispensary directing over half of the profits to The Doe Fund. The Manhattan mama says it took a while for her to figure out how to talk to the parents at her kids' school about what she does for a living. But she says she realized she should have no shame or feel a need to qualify her cannabis profession because weed has never harmed or killed anyone, unlike alcohol.

Arana also shares how cannabis has been a useful tool in her marriage and a way she even bonds with her mom! Plus, Arana teaches us how to know if the weed you're buying in the newly legal state of New York is counterfeit or not -- she also details the dangers of vaping and what to look out for when buying vape carts. This is such a good episode -- happy 420, y'all!

Being a mom who smokes weed is honestly something I am very proud of because I know I am a great mom and it's mostly because cannabis is part of my self-care routine. However, cannabis is still federally illegal and very misunderstood due to the lack of education on the plant. Most people still consider weed a drug and those who partake in it drug addicts. So imagine what these naysayers call moms who smoke weed? It's hardly kind.

I'm no stranger to dealing with haters and the uninformed who believe in the stigma around weed. I often get asked: How do I deal with haters and those who want to label me a bad mom for smoking weed? On this episode, I lay out exactly how to handle someone who wants to judge, shame and bad mouth moms who smoke weed and what to do if someone tries to come for you because you're a cannamom. Normalization of weed will soon come but in the meantime, here's how to navigate people in your life who just don't understand how weed is plant medicine that does way more good than harm.

On this week's episode of Blunt Blowin' Mama, we are running back a conversation where we analyze a study on cannabis use in pregnancy that was published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) on Nov. 15, 2021. This study claims that cannabis use in pregnancy causes higher levels of cortisol in the children born, resulting in more instances of anxiety, stress, and depression.

Here's the study: https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.2106115118

Now, you know we tried to go straight to the source and we reached out to the study's author, Yasmin Hurd, but got no response. So we brought on our own medical experts to unpack the study's findings and provide real, transparent, and unbiased insights from two board-certified registered nurses, Kait Boettcher and Adjuan Edgerson. We asked each nurse a variety of questions about the study, and they broke down what this study's findings really mean for pregnant mamas using cannabis. The nurses also provide advice for expectant mothers who want to use cannabis for medical reasons.

This episode is so informative and really teaches us that we hold the power to educate ourselves on the effects of cannabis -- especially when it comes to its use during pregnancy.

I breastfed both of my kids. But I only used cannabis while breastfeeding one of them. Not too surprisingly, my second born (my cannababy) was the kid I used cannabis while breastfeeding and he's the one I ended up breastfeeding the longest -- 25 months to be exact. I know it's no coincidence either because without cannabis I would have given up and thrown in the towel way sooner because breastfeeding is not easy -- neither is weaning. Well, that's what I thought until I started intentionally using cannabis postpartum and realizing along the way how helpful weed could really be for a breastfeeding mama. This is a highly requested topic and I am finally giving y'all all the information on why I used cannabis during breastfeeding, how I weaned both my kids, and how cannabis helped with not only my breastfeeding journey but weaning, too.

Learn more about breastfeeding and using cannabis by watching my informative workshop on it, the BBM Self-Guided Breastfeeding And Cannabis Workshop where I speak with lactation consultant Evonne Smith, Dr. Oga Obie, cannamom advocate and children's book author MsKindess Ramirez, and Jessica "The Mommy Jane." Our over 120-minute conversation is full of tips, tricks, advice and our own accounts on how weed is beneficial for the breastfeeding parent along with the most harm-reductive ways to consume it with a baby in the home. I used cannabis during my pregnancy with my second child and I firmly believe it was the best decision I ever could have made for myself and baby. I enjoyed my pregnancy, I was emotionally well and physically cared for with the help of cannabis. Now, I want to make sure other parents know that cannabis is an option for pregnancy, too. Listen, I know that pregnancy can be very challenging physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In my opinion, cannabis eases those challenges and allows me to just enjoy the blessing that is pregnancy -- bask in the experience as my body works a true miracle. It's so hard to be present for that miracle when navigating the many curveballs pregnancy can throw your way. So, after many requests from y'all, I put together this episode as a resource and needed guidance for anyone who is considering using cannabis during pregnancy and doesn't know where to start.

This episode is a comprehensive breakdown of the best forms of cannabis you can incorporate into your life and my fave products for expecting mamas. Honestly, I should've done this episode sooner and I wish I had a resource like this for myself when I was pregnant with my first kid in 2015. But it's here now and I am so happy to provide it for you. Don't forget to tap into the products mentioned in the episode listed below.

Our favorite OBGYN is back on the Blunt Blowin' Mama podcast! Dr. Genester Wilson-King is chatting with Shonitria about cannabis for menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea, which are severe debilitating cramps. The doctor talks about using Aima's CBD-CBG suppositories, which is a THC-free water-based product for pelvic pain and menstrual cramps that is inserted vaginally for direct pain relief without any psychoactive or "high" effects.

And can a doctor drug test a pregnant patient without your permission? Dr. Wilson-King answers this question for us!

Does weed harm fertility, and should you stop smoking weed if you're trying to get pregnant? The doctor shares some advice!

Dr. Wilson-King provides helpful insight into how patients can handle encounters with rude or judge-y physicians and medical professionals.

She also lays out very clearly the best approach to drug testing at hospitals and if it's really possible to detox cannabinoids from the system before birth.

Happy New Year!!! Wow, it's 2024 :). But first let me (finally lol) tell you about my solo summer "Eat Pray Love" European vacation. I know I have been promising this episode for a while and now I spill every detail about my life-changing trip.

I had the most magical night in Marseille, France, on magic mushrooms... I spare no detail about how that night unfolded. I stayed up almost all night on shrooms as I listened to music and became reaccquianted with myself -- it's an evening I'll never forget.

And can you believe that when I went to Paris, I smoked weed in a club, got hella paranoid that people knew and left! Phew chile... so many stories I share with y'all in this episode. This trip was my first time travelling solo and honestly, it was just what my soul needed. Being a mom and having been in a relationship for over a decade, I had no idea how much I needed to get away from EVERY THING and EVERY ONE until I actually did it. I hope I inspire you to go do the thing that fills your cup up, too because you're worth it.

Let's start with this: No one should be in jail for weed. It's 420 and it's only appropriate for Evelyn LaChapelle to be a guest on the podcast. Evelyn is a mom, cannabis advocate and business owner. She is also very open about her experiences within the legal justice system after being sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for depositing cannabis funds into a bank account. The California mom spent five years in the North Carolina prison across the country from her friends, family and her young daughter. She details the nuances of her release from prison that many people may be unaware of, like how she entered a drug rehab program in exchange for time off her sentence. It was in this program that she had to introduce herself as someone who was "addicted" to marijuana. While we all celebrate the plant each year on April 20, it's also important to take a moment to remember that this same plant was weaponzied against Black and brown people for years and the effects can still be felt today. Evelyn shares how she had to watch cannabis go legal in her home state and numerous other states across the country while she served time for it. We also get into how she and her daughter handled her incarceration -- which she admits was tough for them both, including her own mother who would fly across the county just so she could visit with her for 30 minutes. Depsite it all, Evelyn was able to turn her anger, frustration and passion into her business venture, 87 months and The Weed Lady. Follow Evelyn on Instagram @87months

Shrooms have been such a huge part of my healing. This is not the first time I have made this declaration because it's true for me. Not only did tripping on shrooms help me heal and learn more about me but I really think it helped me see that my relationship with weed as not a good one. I was smoking weed to go to sleep at night, I smoked weed to wake up in the morning, and I smoked weed before engaging with my kids and everything inbetween. Weed wasn't a tool in my wellness tool kit, it had become a crutch the I depended on to function. I talk more about this on this episode of the Blunt Blowin' Mama podcast and I don't think I am the only person with this experience. I have now healed my relationship with herb and I'm sharing all this because I know I'm not the only one who has been there.

Questions I get asked often: What about when the kids grow up, how will I handle the “weed talk”? Or will I smoke weed with my grown kids? While I think I have the answers, the fact of the matter is that I don’t know yet because my kids are still young (ages 7 and 4). So I decided to tap a mama with experience in raising kids into responsible adults. Wendy, a California mom of four and the author of “Why Mommy Gets High” joins the Blunt Blowin’ Mama podcast to share her perspective raising kids with the help of pot. She shares some tips for us mamas who are just starting out and she dishes on which of her adult kids she’s smoked weed with. I admitted a hard truth last year: I needed to put in real time to improve my mental health and heal my traumas. I knew I couldn't work at a high level by juggling Blunt Blowin' Mama and a full-time journalism job with a major media company while also working on my very fractured mental health. I mean I do enjoy feeling like superwoman. But naw, I just didn't have it in me to do it all anymore. So, I made the impossible decision to take a break from Blunt Blowin' Mama and use that time to work on my mental health. I get into that in more detail in the episode, but this is a good precursor for context and whatnot. I also discuss on this episode how running has helped me not only lose 20 lbs but also improve my mental health. But it was a struggle at first getting back at it. I had to really humble myself when it came to my body and how shocked it was to move again. I also talk about healing and releasing a lot of trauma that I had been holding onto for years. I've been doing deep healing work on my mental health and I'm ready to share. More to come, boo! So, get in your fave smoke spot, roll up, pack a bowl or whateva and sesh with me -- I missed y'all so much, feels good to be back :). The Blunt Blowin' Mama podcast is back BACK backBACK!!! I want to thank you again for listening and your support. P.S. y'all gonna love the new smoke break!

We went on our first family vacation to New York City and it was actually really fun because we had tons of shrooms, edibles and weed! Speaking of shrooms, I had the bright idea to trip in the city (the Lower East Side to be exact) and well... things didn't exactly go as planned. (But it was still an very eye-opening psychedelic trip for me!) Between sight-seeing with the kiddos and having a lil psychedelic fun, I also had a chance to check out the NYC cannabis scene now that the adult use of cannabis is legal in the Big Apple. So much to dish on in this episode, y'all!

I experienced postpartum depression for two years after giving birth to my second child, my son, in 2019. But I didn't even know it because I didn't start exhibiting postpartum depression symptoms until about 12 months after giving birth in 2020. Cannabis was about the only thing that kept me functioning but it was also the thing that made it hard for me to recognize I was depressed. It's been a wild revelation for me and I talk about it with y'all on this episode. I get into how my depression impacted my life, work and family. I lost all desire to do the things I loved, I was having trouble taking care of myself (and my apartment), and I had gained a lot of weight (about 30 lbs). Still, I wasn't able to clearly see that I was not myself. Honestly, being so vulnerable with y'all on the podcast was scary. I shared some personal things about my life on this episode, and I really hope my story can serve as a testimony to help someone else who may be going through something similar. We are not alone. On this week's episode of Blunt Blowin' Mama, we analyze a new study — published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Nov. 15 — on cannabis use in pregnancy. The study’s researchers revealed in their findings that cannabis use in pregnancy causes higher levels of cortisol in the children born, resulting in more instances of anxiety, stress, and depression. There were also reports that children born to mothers who smoked weed during pregnancy had higher instances of aggression and hyperactivity. We reached out to the study's author Yasmin Hurd but we received no reply. So, we brought on nurses Adjuan and Kait to unpack the study's findings and provide real, transparent, and unbiased insights. Check out the full episode now!

Even though she has been in the industry for a long time her family still does not know exactly what she does. They do see the results of her success and benefit from her being in the weed profession. Kimberly’s goals are to not only launch a successful brand, she also wants to advocate for mental health and the power to break generational curses using a plant based solution. Her path to cannabis started when she was experiencing crippling anxiety and underperforming in her job. She opted out of going the pharmaceutical route and got her medical marijuana card. Once she started consuming regularly she could see a big difference in her wellness. This sparked a curiosity within to use her Marketing background to create successful campaigns for cannabis businesses such as Parks and Barkley CBD. Elise McDonough is a former High Times contributor and specializes in consuming and creating MMJ Edibles. Elise believes that edibles can be the best way to consume cannabis by medical patients. She recommends that novice cannabis users should always go low and start slow to enjoy their experience to not get uncomfortably high. Blunt Blowin' Mama and Elise unpack the injustices in society and the need for systemic change to battle racial injustice and prejudice. Elise has been heavily involved with the fight for cannabis legalization and speaks on the disparity between white and brown entrepreneurs' success and how white business owners have more access to capital to launch and fund their cannabis businesses compared to their brown and black counterparts. In this episode Elise and Blunt Blowin' Mama also discuss the power cannabis has  to change the world and heal the consumer, as well as why we should encourage ourselves to be creative with how we consume cannabis in our daily lives.

Sophie has an anxiety disorder, suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), has chronic pain, and she's a brain cancer survivor. She says she tried pharmaceutical drugs to treat herself and, ultimately, she realized that cannabis was the best medication for her instead a ton of pills. She's nothing short of amazing.

Sophie calls the plant "life changing" and she's open about being a medical cannabis patient. She said she talks about cannabis with her family, daughter, husband and even staff at her daughter's school. She says she talks about her cannabis use because she wants to "break the stigma."

She has such a powerful story that you don't want to miss. Many thanks to this brave mama for opening up and sharing how cannabis helps her live a better life.

This season Shonitria focuses on sharing the stories of everyday moms who smoke weed. These women are present and phenomenal moms, which is something they all credit to cannabis. It's been an honor speaking with these women. Hopefully, their stories of how cannabis helped them spiritually, physically, emotionally, and beyond will resonate so folks know moms who smoke weed are not bad moms.

Smoking weed right before giving birth is pretty badass, which is the appropriate word to describe Jess aka The Mommy Jane. The mom of two is an advocate for all parents who choose plant medicine for their health and wellness.

Over a bong and hella weed -- we were getting stoned AF, y'all -- she reveals the best strains to smoke if you are trying to lose weight. She credits cannabis for her over 100-pound weight loss. Plus, we discuss: Doesn't it seem like babies whose moms smoked weed while pregnant are much more smarter than other babies?

Shrooms, acid, molly, Ayahuasca, and more are classified as psychedelics. Shelby and Madison are the cofounders of psychedelic publication DoubleBlind magazine. Listen, throw all your previous beliefs away about psychedelics because these ladies really broke down everything everyone should know about trippin'. They also explained why it's important to include psychedelics in holistic health and wellness conversations.

Shonitria also confessed to dabbling with a couple of trippy 'tings when she was in college -- so cliche, I know. Light one up, and open your third eye while you listen to this episode! I don't know about you guys but after listening, I have decided to plan a baecation with psychedelics ;).

Shonitria chats it up with popular cannabis lifestyle publication Broccoli magazine's Editor in Chief Anja, who gets really candid on why weed isn't the big bad drug we were all brainwashed to think it is and how she's using her publication to educate folks on the many amazing uses of the plant. Whipping out a copy of Broccoli magazine is certainly a good icebreaker to spark up conversations with any weed nay-sayer. Shonitria and Anja also discuss if the word "marijuana" should really be considered offensive.

As a mom with little kids at home, I often get asked how I plan to talk to my kiddos about cannabis. While I have an idea of how I want the conversation to go (open, honest and transparent), I still haven't had to have the "talk" with them about it since my daughter is 4 years old and my son is 8 months old. So I posed the question to my guest Ashley Kingsley, who is the proud mom of two and co-founder of cannabis wellness network Ellementa. Ashley also dished on how she likes to use cannabis to take care of herself as a woman going through menopause. To all the ladies: This is a must-hear episode!
