Hey champs — this one’s a rapid-fire episode for any community yoga studio owner who’s overwhelmed by every new AI tool, app, and platform update landing in their feed this year.
As a community yoga studio coach, Michael Jay spends his time testing this stuff so you don’t have to — and in this episode, he hands you the full list. No twenty-minute deep dives, just tool, what it does, and a real scenario for how you’d actually use it in your own community yoga studio.
You’ll learn:
•The one non-negotiable your booking platform needs — integrated SMS and email automation triggered by real member data, not a monthly guess-and-blast newsletter.
•The free AI booking bots now available across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, regardless of what booking software you’re on.
•How to brand every AI-generated design automatically using Canva’s Magic Brand Engine — set it once, never touch it again.
•Real options for camera-shy studio owners, with an honest take on when to use them and when real-you content still wins.
•The Instagram, Meta, and WhatsApp features built specifically for capturing leads.
•Michael’s own “Role + Outcome” framework for using ChatGPT or Claude properly.
Key quote:
“It was never really about which tool you pick. It’s about how you talk to it.”

"The Community Yoga Studios that grow every fall aren't the ones with the flashiest launch graphic — they're the ones who did the unglamorous looking-backward work in August, so September wasn't a guess."
Everybody treats fall like the Super Bowl of the Community Yoga Studio year, and most owners respond by doing what they did last year, just a little louder. In this solo episode, I walk through the seven things I have every Community Yoga Studio client assess before we build a fall plan — backed by real 2026 industry benchmark data, so you've got actual numbers to check yourself against, not just a gut feeling.
In this episode:
• The numbers every Community Yoga Studio owner should pull before planning fall — and the benchmark for a healthy retention rate
• The 90-day cliff: the window where roughly half of new clients are at risk, and why it matters more than new sign-ups
• Why your fall schedule needs to match the team you actually have, not the one you wish you had
• The healthy payroll-to-revenue range for a Community Yoga Studio, and where it tips into a real problem
• Why referred members outperform every other acquisition channel — and how to build that into your fall plan
• Free tools I hand you directly in this episode: a schedule template, a marketing/event guide, a retention planner, and my 2026 Studio Planner
"Belonging isn't just a nice value to have — it's measurably your cheapest and most effective growth channel for a Community Yoga Studio."

“You don’t build a successful community yoga studio by making perfect decisions. You build one by making the next right decision, over and over again.”
For the first time on the Yoga Biz Champ Podcast, we’re turning the microphone around. In this Ask Me Anything episode, I’m answering some of the questions I get asked most—about coaching, running a community yoga studio, business, and a little about the person behind Yoga Biz Champ.
We talk about the biggest mistakes I see new yoga studio owners make, why leadership and marketing are investments rather than expenses, what makes my coaching style different, and a few personal stories that have shaped the way I work with community yoga studio owners today.

“Burnout doesn’t happen because you stop caring. Burnout happens because you care so much that somewhere along the way, you stop taking care of yourself.”
If you’ve been feeling tired lately, you’re not alone.
On recent coaching calls, Michael Jay has been asking studio owners to rate their energy from 1 to 10. The answers have been surprisingly low. Lots of 3s. Lots of 4s. Even the 7s came with a laugh and a disclaimer.
So why are so many community Yoga Studio owners running on empty?
In this episode, Michael is joined by former studio owner and consultant Stephanie for an honest conversation about burnout, boundaries, self-care, and what it really takes to sustain yourself while leading a community Yoga Studio.
Together they share stories from their own experiences as studio owners, discuss why summer can be an ideal time to reset, and explore the habits, systems, and mindset shifts that help owners protect their energy without losing momentum in their business.
The conversation touches on everything from taking time off and finding your personal rhythm to delegating tasks, reconnecting with your own practice, and remembering that the health of a community Yoga Studio starts with the health of its owner.
This episode is especially valuable for owners who love their community Yoga Studio deeply but have started to feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or disconnected from the reasons they opened their doors in the first place.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
• Why so many community Yoga Studio owners are feeling burnt out right now
• The warning signs that your energy tank is running low
• Why summer can be the perfect season to rest, regroup, and prepare for fall
• How dedicated time to work on your Yoga Studio—not just in it—can reduce stress and improve focus
• Why delegation, systems, and asking for help are essential skills for community Yoga Studio owners
• How finding your own rhythm can improve both your health and your business
• Why attending classes as a student can reignite your passion and creativity
• The importance of practicing what you preach as the leader of a community Yoga Studio
• Simple self-care habits that can help prevent burnout before it starts
• Why building a thriving community Yoga Studio begins with taking care of yourself

What if your biggest opportunity isn't getting more leads?
What if it's helping more of the students you already have become consistent?
I recently attended a boutique fitness webinar packed with data around member behaviour, retention, revenue and community. The examples weren't Community Yoga Studios... but the lessons absolutely apply.
In this episode, I translate the findings into practical ideas you can use right away in your own Community Yoga Studio.
In this episode:
• The 4 member segments every Community Yoga Studio has and how to identify them
• Why the "Situationship" group makes up over 70% of members and may be your biggest growth opportunity
• The surprising 5-visit milestone and why getting students to class quickly matters
• Which members drive the biggest impact on revenue and retention
• Why quarterly challenges can improve attendance long after they end
• Practical ways to increase visit frequency and engagement
• How leading studios are using loyalty, referrals, milestones and automations to grow smarter
• Why human connection is still the secret ingredient behind every successful Community Yoga Studio
The Community Yoga Studios growing sustainably aren't just getting more leads.
They're helping more people build routines, feel seen, and become part of the community.
And the data gives us some pretty amazing clues on how to do exactly that.

If your Yoga Studio marketing always feels last-minute, you are not alone.
In this solo Marketing Month episode, Michael Jay breaks down why so many Yoga Studio owners feel like they are constantly scrambling to promote programs, manage the schedule, answer emails, lead the team, and keep the business moving.
The issue usually is not a lack of ideas. Most studio owners have plenty of good ideas. The real problem is that those ideas are often sitting in the owner’s head, being launched too late, or getting buried under everything that feels urgent.
This episode is a practical reset for Yoga Studio owners who want to feel more prepared, more organized, and more in control of their marketing.
Michael shares simple steps to help you block real marketing time, delegate the tasks that are slowing you down, look at your energy as well as your schedule, create repeatable systems, and finally get your marketing projects out of your head and onto a project board.
This is not about becoming a perfect marketing machine. It is about creating a better rhythm so your Yoga Studio can grow with more clarity, more consistency, and less owner overwhelm.
In this episode:
Michael talks about why last-minute marketing rarely works well, how to protect time for business-building work, why successful studio owners stop trying to do everything themselves, and how one simple checklist can make future launches feel so much easier.
He also shares how success starts to look different when your systems, team, marketing, and community all start moving in the same direction.

This is a great episode for any Yoga Studio owner who knows they need to stop overthinking their marketing and start showing up with more clarity, consistency, and personality.
In this episode, we cover:
• How Samantha approaches social media for her Yoga Studio
• Why studying strong marketers outside the yoga world can help

Things have changed for the Yoga Studio owner.
After spending time at HFA, sitting in sessions, listening to operators, consultants, and studio owners from all over… one thing became very clear:
What used to work… doesn’t work the same way anymore.
In this episode, I break down what’s actually happening in the industry right now—and how it directly impacts your Yoga Studio, your growth, and your day-to-day experience as an owner.
This isn’t theory.
This is what’s happening on the ground.
If your Yoga Studio feels harder than it used to… if you’re doing all the things but not seeing the same results… this episode is going to hit.
We get into why competition has quietly changed the game for every Yoga Studio, why relying only on “being good” isn’t enough anymore, and how the studios that are growing are thinking differently about marketing, systems, and community.
I also break down one of the simplest but most powerful shifts I heard at HFA—how to think about your marketing as both “fishing nets” and “fishing poles”—and why most Yoga Studios are missing half the equation.
We talk about referrals (and why your Yoga Studio doesn’t actually have a referral problem), what’s really going wrong with lead follow-up inside studios, and how a lack of structure—not effort—is holding a lot of owners back.
There’s also a real conversation here around team, burnout, and what role you need to play as the owner of your Yoga Studio right now.
Because whether you like it or not… your presence still matters more than anything.
And finally, we bring it back to what actually moves the needle:
If one of those is off, your Yoga Studio feels it.
This episode is about getting honest, getting clear, and tightening up what actually drives growth in your Yoga Studio—without overcomplicating it.
If you’re building a community Yoga Studio, trying to grow one, or just trying to get things back under control… this one’s for you.

Many community yoga studio owners reach a point where they feel like they are doing everything.
Teaching classes.
Answering emails.
Posting on social media.
Processing refunds.
Updating schedules.
Managing teachers.
Running a community yoga studio requires wearing a lot of hats, especially in the early stages. But as the studio grows, the owner’s role needs to evolve too.
In this solo episode, Michael Jay shares a simple exercise he uses with community yoga studio owners to help them understand exactly what work is happening inside their business before they hire help.
The process starts by documenting every task happening inside the yoga studio for one full week. From there, those tasks are organized into categories like marketing, administration, operations, and community building.
Once everything is visible, it becomes much easier to see what the owner should keep doing, what should be delegated, and what tasks could even be outsourced.
For many community yoga studio owners, this exercise reveals the exact role the studio needs next — whether that’s an assistant manager, an operations administrator, or project-based support.
When the right people are handling the right work, the owner can focus on leadership, marketing, and strengthening the community inside the yoga studio.
If you’re feeling stretched running your community yoga studio, this episode offers a simple framework to bring clarity, build support, and move the business forward.
⸻
In This Episode
How to document everything happening inside your community yoga studio in just one week
Why most yoga studio owners underestimate how many operational tasks they are actually doing
How to organize studio work into clear business buckets
How to decide what the community yoga studio owner should keep doing
How to turn your task list into a real job description
When outsourcing small projects makes more sense than hiring
Why every role in a community yoga studio should help move the business forward
⸻
“Most community yoga studio owners don’t need to work harder. They need clarity on what work actually belongs to them.” - Michael Jay

What is a community Yoga Studio actually worth in 2026?
In this episode, I sit down again with Mitch to break down what’s really happening in the buying and selling market right now — no fluff, no myths.
We talk valuation, clean accounting, leadership structure, the impact of ClassPass, and why community-driven studios continue to hold strong resale value when they’re built properly.
If you own a community Yoga Studio and assume selling is too hard or not possible, this episode will challenge that thinking.
In This Episode:
• Why community Yoga Studios often outperform trend-based concepts in resale
• The biggest mistakes that quietly kill deals
• Why owner-dependency lowers valuation
• How retention directly impacts what your studio is worth
• When to start planning your exit — even if you’re not selling anytime soon
A Quote from Mitch:
“Wrap your business in a pretty bow — clean books, strong systems, real leadership — and you create options.”

“Retention doesn’t begin at six months. Retention begins in the first three weeks of a student’s journey, and it’s built quietly, class by class, in the first 90 days.”
It begins the moment a new student walks into your community Yoga Studio for the first time.
In this episode, Michael Jay breaks down what’s really happening during the first 90 days of a student’s journey—and why this period quietly determines whether someone becomes part of your studio’s community or drifts away before the habit forms.
Drawing on real studio experience and industry insight, this episode explores the psychology of new students, the common points where studios unintentionally lose people, and the practical systems that help students stay consistent long enough to truly feel connected to a Yoga Studio community.
You’ll also hear what typically happens between months three and six, why attendance patterns matter more than most owners realize, and how small, consistent actions inside a community Yoga Studio often matter more than big marketing campaigns.
This episode is especially valuable for studio owners who want to build a strong, steady community Yoga Studio—one where students don’t just attend classes, but feel like they belong.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why the first three weeks are the most fragile part of a student’s journey
What should be happening in the first 90 days to help habits form
How automation and follow-up messages can support students without feeling robotic
Why teachers and culture are the foundation of a strong community Yoga Studio
What happens between months three and six—and how to prevent the silent drop-off
Practical steps any Yoga Studio can implement immediately to improve retention and build community

"In 2026, Google is not a library. Google is a Concierge. And a Concierge doesn't send people to a ghost town."
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the endless "to-do" list of Instagram algorithms, SEO keywords, and content funnels—stop. The game is about to change entirely.
In this deep-dive "thinking" episode, we explore the massive shift happening in 2026: the move from Screens to Ambient Computing. With Apple and Google partnering on a new AI-powered Siri, and rumors of camera-equipped AirPods and Jony Ive’s new "iPhone of AI," the way students find your studio is shifting from "Search and Click" to "Look and Ask."
We break down exactly what this "Star Trek Moment" means for your business, why "Perfection" is now a red flag on social media, and give you a specific 2026 Playbook to future-proof your studio today.
In This Episode, You Will Learn:
• The "Star Trek" Shift: Why we are moving from a "Library" economy (searching for answers) to a "Concierge" economy (asking for answers).
• The Apple + Google Signal: What the historic partnership between these two giants means for your local SEO (and why Siri is about to get a PhD).
• Hardware Rumors: The inside scoop on "Project B798" (AirPods with cameras) and the Ray-Ban Meta glasses—and how they will "read" your physical studio signage.
• The "Ghost Town" Penalty: Why Google’s new AI hates static websites and how to prove to the algorithm that your business is alive.
• The Anti-Aesthetic: Why Adam Mosseri (Head of Instagram) says "Shares" are the new "Likes," and why low-fidelity, messy video is crushing polished ads.
• The "Audio Audit": A simple test to see if your website is ready for the Voice AI era.

In this Season 6 kickoff episode, Michael sits down with Aurielle Vendemmia, founder of True Moon Yoga & Fitness, for a powerful conversation about what it really takes to build a sustainable, thriving Yoga Studio community.
Aurielle shares her 20-year journey from opening studios out of survival, to running five locations, to intentionally scaling back to one boutique Yoga Studio built around nervous system regulation, clear leadership, and deep community connection.
This episode is for Yoga Studio owners who want to create a business that supports both their students and their own life — while building a loyal, committed community that actually sticks around.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn
• How Aurielle opened her first Yoga Studio without a business plan
• Why running multiple studios led to burnout — and how she rebuilt with intention
• How a serious accident reshaped her approach to movement and leadership
• Why nervous system regulation matters for long-term community trust
• How consistent class structure creates safety for students and teachers
• What sustainable staffing and delegation really look like
• How to use data instead of emotion to design a Yoga Studio schedule
• Marketing strategies that attract the right students into your community
• Why not being “for everyone” builds a stronger Yoga Studio
Quote from the Episode
“Burnout is not a badge of honor. If your business only works when you’re exhausted, it’s not actually working — it’s extracting from you.”
About Aurielle Vendemmia
Aurielle Vendemmia is the founder of True Moon Yoga & Fitness, a boutique heated Yoga Studio that blends yoga, strength training, Pilates-inspired movement, and nervous-system-aware teaching.

“You can have multiple income streams and run a thriving Yoga Studio — as long as you have a plan and a team aligned with your values.” – Aly, Summit Sol Yoga & Wellness
I sit down with Aly from Summit Sol Yoga & Wellness in Dillon, Colorado — a studio owner who brings a rare blend of executive leadership, yoga philosophy, and grounded business strategy into everything she does.
Aly didn’t walk away from her career in healthcare technology.
She expanded her life.
She found yoga during a period of anxiety, traveled to India to study it, and eventually stepped into studio ownership with intention, clarity, and a real business plan. Within three months of buying her studio, she rebranded it, aligned her team around new values, elevated the customer experience, and built a studio that became profitable in year one.
Inside this conversation, we get into:
• What it’s really like to take over an existing Yoga Studio
• Rebranding fast — without losing the community
• Leading a team you didn’t hire and setting new expectations
• Building systems, KPIs, and processes that keep the business stable
• How technology supports growth
• Creating seasonal programming that feels aligned and sustainable

“If you get irritated with every little scratch, how are you going to cross the jungle?” – Vani
In this episode I’m sitting down with someone incredibly special — one of my long-time coaching clients and a true Yoga Studio success story, Vani Shukla, owner of Yoga Spirit Studios in Adelaide, Australia.
I’ve worked with Vani for over three and a half years, and I’ve watched her go from navigating the chaos of buying a legacy studio after COVID… to becoming a confident, grounded studio leader with a brand, schedule, team, and community that finally aligns with who she really is.
If you’re a teacher dreaming of owning a Yoga Studio — or you’ve taken over an existing one and you’re still figuring out how to make it yours — Vani’s journey is going to feel honest, relatable, and incredibly inspiring. I’m so excited to share her story with you.
We cover:
– Yoga as part of daily life growing up in India
– Four years of formal yoga + yoga therapy study before she ever taught
– Moving to Australia and the “meant to be” moment she found Yoga Spirit
– What it’s really like to buy an existing Yoga Studio post-COVID
– Team dynamics, member expectations, and making bold decisions
– Rebranding slowly and intentionally once the foundations were strong
– Balancing traditional lineage with a modern Western yoga market
– How mentoring helped Vani gain clarity, confidence, and direction

“You can’t grow what you don’t measure — but once you measure it, you can design a studio that feels as good as it looks on paper.”
In this episode, Michael Jay breaks down exactly how he helps yoga studios around the world plan for the new year — using real booking system data, not guesswork.
You’ll learn:
• Why your attendance and sales tell two completely different stories — and why both matter.
• The high-energy windows every yoga studio should plan around: early November, Black Friday, early December, and early January.
• The natural low periods you need to protect (hello, February 👋).
• The five data checkpoints every owner should track — in normal human language, not “corporate KPI speak.”
• How to use your booking data to build your 2026 rhythm, plan cash flow, and stop scrambling.
• Michael also shares what he’s seeing across the studios he coaches worldwide — the real reasons some owners are thriving while others are still reacting to every dip and slow week.
“You can’t grow what you don’t measure — but once you measure it, you can design a studio that feels as good as it looks on paper.”
🎯 Next Steps:
• Pull your attendance + sales reports and look at your 2025 pattern.
• Color-code your high-energy and low-risk months.
Start designing your 2026 calendar with purpose.

"Studios that win aren’t the cheapest in town — they’re the ones where people feel seen, supported, and connected."
In this episode, I’m joined by Chris Appiah and Stephanie Breaux Bradley of The Sales Arms for a deep dive into what’s really working for fitness and yoga studios moving towards 2026. We talk candidly about lead generation, why community beats discounts every time, and how studio owners can finally stop wasting money on ads that don’t convert.
Stephanie sharesthe importance of yoga as a “third space” for mental health and connection. Together, we break down how studios can stop chasing low-price intro offers and instead lean into the emotional benefits and belonging that people are craving.
We get real about:
• Why price-based marketing is a trap and how to shift into experience-based messaging
• The “three T’s” (tech, team, and training) that every studio needs to operate like a business
• How to create multiple doorways for new students beyond the standard intro pass
• What real lead follow-up looks like (hint: 10–20 touchpoints, not two emails)
• How to prescribe class schedules so students succeed instead of floundering
• Ways to use software properly — not just to collect leads, but to actually track, nurture, and convert them
Chris and Steph are in the trenches with studios every day, helping owners stop bleeding leads and start creating predictable growth. If you’ve ever felt like you’re working harder than your marketing is, this episode is for you.

"If you’re planning a Mother’s Day promo the week before, it’s already too late. Studios need to be at least 8 weeks ahead."
In this episode, Stephanie Breaux Bradley and I talk about something every studio owner struggles with: planning your year before it runs away from you.
We dig into how studio owners can finally stop winging their promotions and start using strategic calendar planning to drive revenue, build community, and keep their members consistent all year long.
Stephanie shares examples from her own community events — from football-themed challenges to car shows to candlelight yoga for charity — and how these grassroots promotions worked because they were planned with intention and tied to the local community.
We also talk through:
• Why being at least 8 weeks ahead on your marketing calendar is the minimum standard for success
• How to use local events, health days, and holidays to anchor your promotions
• The importance of documenting events right after they happen so you can refine and repeat them next year
• Balancing holiday promotions like Black Friday without overwhelming your members
• Creative ways to appreciate your staff and members through events and celebrations
• How planning provides control, structure, and routine for both you and your community
I also share a sneak peek at Plan26 — my upcoming free resource with World Health Days, seasonal prompts, and planning tools to help studio owners map out their 2026 calendar with less stress and more strategy.

What makes a yoga studio thrive? It’s not the logo, the schedule, or even the space — it’s the teachers and the point of view that your studio holds.
In this special “podcast buddy” episode, I sit down with Francesca Cervero, host of The Mentor Sessions Podcast and long-time private yoga teacher and mentor. Francesca has been teaching yoga full-time for over 20 years, runs a teacher training called The Science of the Private Lesson, and mentors yoga teachers to develop a strong, authentic teaching voice.
Together, we explore the evolving yoga industry, the role of studio owners in elevating their teachers, and why having a clear point of view is more powerful (and sustainable) than trying to be everything to everyone.
What you’ll hear in this episode:
• How yoga studios have shifted from community-led to franchise-driven — and back again
• Why teachers fresh out of training aren’t always ready for studio life (and how to mentor them well)
• The difference between “niching down” and developing a true teaching point of view
• Why your yoga studio is only as strong as the teachers who represent it
• How community studios today can compete with franchise-level tools
• Real talk about industry changes, competition, and what makes studios sustainable in 2025 and beyond

In this episode of Yoga Biz Champ, I sit down with Marianne Buchilo, the heart and hustle behind Peaceful Yoga in Malverne, NY. This is a grounded, inspiring conversation about what it really looks like to grow a yoga studio—especially when you're not a franchise, not a chain, but a local community-based space.

We get into:
• How Marianne took over her teacher’s studio and made it her own
• What it took to clean up legacy systems (goodbye 3-day payroll!)
• Finding confidence as a leader, a marketer, and a studio owner
•Using automation + daily detective work to keep students engaged
• Getting scrappy with local partnerships (coffee shops, cinemas, community events)
• Why studio owners need support—and how coaching filled the gap

“Until you find your why, everything else is external.” – Arundhati Baitmangalkar
What happens when you build a studio without a business plan—but with a rock-solid purpose? In this episode of Yoga Biz Champ, I sit down with Arundhati Baitmangalkar, the founder of Aham Yoga and host of the Let's Talk Yoga podcast, to talk about the deep-rooted why behind everything she does.
We go beyond the surface of yoga studio ownership and get into what really sustains a teacher or studio owner long-term. From teaching her first community class to leading international trainings, Arundhati’s clarity around her mission—to teach and be of impact—is what’s kept her grounded, energized, and successful for over a decade.
In this honest, heart-forward conversation, we talk about:
• How your “why” becomes your compass when everything else feels unclear
• Why she started small—and why that was her biggest advantage
• Moving from yoga teacher to team leader with integrity
• Redefining boundaries, burnout, and what success actually looks like
• Creating content and showing up online in a way that feels aligned
• How to build systems, not chaos, even if you’re a one-person show
• Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, over it, or just overthinking your next move—this episode is your nudge to come back to your why.

BONUS EPISODE from THE BOUTIQUE FITNESS MARKETING PODCAST
Question for you… Is your business a brand? What is a fitness brand, anyway?
Do you have your answer?
So what do you think? Is your studio a brand?
I’ll answer it for you. Yes. Your fitness studio business is a brand … because all businesses are brands!
Yes, it was a trick question!
Your business is the organization and people that deliver your services. Your day-to-day ops, sales process, teachers, class flow, desk team, and more.
Your brand is how customers perceive your business, which means it’s a little trickier to nail down. It’s less tangible but is SO important.
People ARE talking about your business, or at least have a quiet opinion about it. And the reality is that if you don’t define your studio’s brand, other people will do it for you.
So, once know the answer to the question of what is a fitness brand, the next question is, what are you doing to take control of how your brand is perceived?
My guess is you’re doing a lot of things already. You’re making efforts to offer a consistently excellent class experience. You care if your studio is dirty or if your front desk staff is rude.
But let’s be real. Every business is (or should be) doing those things. That’s the absolute low bar for brand respect.
This is where it gets fun…
When you go a little bit deeper into what your brand is, it CAN be the most powerful marketing tool in your tool belt.
It can inform where you market, how you spend your marketing budget, and, in time, it can even gain you brand recognition that will have people searching your studio out by name. That kind of brand love comes with some pretty great perks: customer loyalty, word-of-mouth referrals, and the willingness to pay more, to name a few.
So, if you’re like a lot of my clients when we start working together, and you think “colors and a logo” are the core of your branding, then this is an exercise for you

In this episode, Michael reflects on his experience working with yoga studio owners and the common fears they face, particularly related to showing up on Instagram and in public. He shares his appreciation for podcasts as a platform for genuine conversations and explains why he has avoided solo episodes in the past. However, today he decides to break that pattern and dive into the current landscape of studio owners and their challenges.
Michael discusses the unique mix of clients he currently works with, including both new studio owners and those with varying levels of experience. He emphasizes the stark contrast between frazzled studio owners in constant reaction mode and calm, forward-thinking ones. Using Lisa from Tucn Yoga Pod as an example, he highlights the importance of having systems and a team in place that allows for a smoother operation and a more enjoyable work experience.
The conversation then shifts to the critical role of teachers in a yoga studio's success. Michael stresses that a studio is only as good as its teachers and emphasizes the significance of a thorough onboarding process and gut instinct when hiring. He advises studio owners to clearly communicate expectations and values to teachers, while also empowering them to be the best they can be. Michael encourages studio owners to support their teachers and help them improve, but also acknowledges that difficult decisions may need to be made if a teacher is not a good fit for the studio's vision.
The discussion moves on to the topic of bringing back students to in-person classes, especially in areas like Canada and Australia where the transition has been slower. Michael explores the idea that hybrid and Zoom classes might be hindering the return to in-person experiences for some students. He recounts a conversation with loyal students who expressed a desire for the sense of community and personalized attention that they missed in virtual classes. Michael suggests prioritizing the in-person experience while making adjustments to the camera placement for hybrid classes to enhance the feeling of inclusion for both in-person and virtual participants.
Lastly, Michael touches on the importance of building confidence in students and the power of heartfelt communication to encourage them to return to the studio. He emphasizes the need for studios to remind their members about the value of self-care and reestablishing routines post-COVID.

In this episode of Yoga Biz Camp, Michael welcomes Chris Appiah from The Sales Arms and Stephanie Breaux Bradley. They discuss the importance of intro offers in the yoga and fitness industry and strategies to convert those intro offers into long-term memberships.
Chris explains that the three-class offer works best for someone who is new to fitness and is looking for structure and guidance. On the other hand, an unlimited intro offer works best for someone who is already familiar with fitness and knows what they want.
Chris emphasizes the importance of tailoring the experience to the client and finding out their "why." He explains that the sales process should be continuous and not just limited to the intro offer. Member management is also crucial to ensure that clients remain consistent in their fitness journey.
During the episode, Michael, Stephanie and Chris also discuss the challenges of the boutique fitness industry, the importance of visuals in the studio, and the psychology behind pricing packages.
Show Notes
Chris Appiah
Before The Sales Arms, our founder, Chris Appiah, was the VP of Sales for the largest franchisee in the Xponential Fitness organization and played a pivotal role in reviving failing studios across the country. With his program in place, studios increased membership by over 500% in just 1 year. Monthly studio revenue went from $25K to $65K on average and continues to grow today. It is that experience that sparked the idea to start The Sales Arms.
Chris has over a decade of sales experience in the fitness industry. Having worked for some of the biggest brands in the industry, 24hr fitness, Peloton, and Xponential Fitness to name a few. Chris manages his team at The Sales Arms where he teaches them the best practices for sales and high level lead and member management skills. Having worked in so many aspects of fitness (Boutique, Big Box Commercial, Corporate Wellness, Personal Training and Amenity Management), Chris has seen all aspects of the business.
Over the last 3 years, The Sales Arms has experienced tremendous growth. What started as a team of two working in just a couple of studios has evolved into more than 20 employees who have helped to grow over 300 studios nationwide and who are currently supporting over 70 active clients.

In this episode, Michael Jay welcomes back Lisa from Tucson Yoga Pod, who talks about her journey of opening a yoga studio. Lisa retired for the second time and went back to work after traveling extensively and visiting yoga studios all over the world. She developed her vision for the perfect yoga studio, a beautiful spa-like and welcoming environment where yoga is demystified through exceptional instructors who lead students on a journey where yoga is accessible to everyone.
Lisa opened her studio in 2020 as part of a franchise. However, due to some differences, she decided to leave the franchise and become an independent studio with the same name. She focused on redefining the mission, vision, and values of the studio with the help of Michael.
Michael assisted Lisa with pricing changes, which included increasing the intro offer from one week to two weeks. They also focused on the conversion of intro offers to memberships. Lisa's superpower is spreadsheets, which she uses to analyze the KPIs of the studio. They simplified the KPIs for the team to celebrate mini-wins along the way, and they use the KPIs to correct the course.
Lisa mentions that working with Michael helped her to focus on the bigger picture, and his support and guidance were instrumental in the success of her studio. Michael also helped her to delegate roles and responsibilities to the team, which in turn helped Lisa focus on the big picture and team mentorship.
In the end, Lisa bravely shares her journey with mental health and and she encourages others to prioritize their well-being as well.

This is an excerpt from an upcoming episode of Yoga Biz Camp
Lisa Cutts, owner of Tucson Yoga in Arizona, shares her journey with mental health on the podcast Yoga Biz Camp. In 2009, she fell ill and ended up in the ICU, unaware of the mind-body connection. Yoga became her refuge, slowing down her racing thoughts and instilling a sense of well-being. Inspired by her own experience, Lisa created a welcoming yoga studio where people can focus on themselves without judgment. Through her studio, she also found the courage to talk openly about mental illness, breaking the stigma and letting others know they are not alone. Lisa believes that success and mental illness are not mutually exclusive and emphasizes the importance of managing mental health continuously. Her goal is to foster a supportive community and encourage discussions on mental well-being.
This podcast episode featuring John Homyk, founder of Loopspark, provides valuable insights and advice for our yoga studio owners. The conversation covers various topics including how to automate processes and track staff duties, the importance of customer outreach, and the benefits of using a comprehensive CRM platform like Loopspark.
John explains how automations can help staff focus on building communities and growing attendance and sales, by freeing up time and resources. The podcast also touches on his personal journey to becoming an entrepreneur and developing multiple SaaS companies as well has how Loopspark was created as a love story to his studio owner wife.
Towards the end of the podcast John and Michael discuss the different types of introductory offers that work best for different modalities.
Overall, this podcast is a must-listen for yoga studio owners looking to streamline their processes, improve their businesses, and build a strong community of loyal customers.

Yoga Pod Tucson - LISA CUTTS
It all started back in late 2017 when Brian and Lisa Cutts started planning for Lisa to retire for the second time (not one to sit still, Lisa went back to work after 18 months of retirement once before).
As a corporate executive in the enterprise software space, Lisa traveled extensively and was able to visit yoga studios all over the world. During this time, she developed her vision for the perfect yoga studio … a beautiful spa-like and welcoming environment where yoga is demystified through exceptional instructors who lead students on a journey where yoga is accessible to absolutely everyone.
Fast forward to finding the perfect location, Brian started working with architects to design a state-of-the-art studio. Excited to finally open our doors in 2020…COVID hit and delayed the Grand Opening until late May 2020. After a few weeks, we shut our doors with the rest of Tucson and re-opened with limited capacity September 2020.
It’s been a wild ride!

Jill Agonias is a young entrepreneur fueled by a passion for seemingly impossible challenges. As a yoga teacher, rock climber, surfer, world traveler, and philanthropist, Jill’s motivated to share her love of yoga, obsession with adventure, and advocacy for equity through Sol Seek Yoga Studio.
Before owning Sol Seek, Jill helped lead Vitamin Angels’ marketing strategy - a global nonprofit that gives lifesaving vitamins to underserved populations. After nearly 4 years at Vitamin Angels, she traveled around the world practicing yoga at studios in 20+ countries while simultaneously working remotely as a marketing consultant for small businesses and nonprofits.
The culmination of these experiences inspired her to take over the ownership of Divinitree Yoga Studio when she returned to the United States in 2018. Little did she know she would revive a failed business, endure a global pandemic, almost go bankrupt, but still come out on top with a new name and brand, and renovated studio. Sol Seek is now a recognized and respected refuge and staple in Santa Barbara, California.
As an Asian American woman, Jill is also passionate about making yoga accessible and inclusive for people of color, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized communities. She uses her business as a tool for education and advocacy to help create more equitable communities within her community and beyond.

He is proud to serve his community in public service as an advocate for equitable and sustainable economic development opportunities. The value Austin places on community was instilled in him by his parents – a police officer and a nurse. WELCOME TO SEASON 2 OF YOGA BIZ CAMP
I am so excited to kick of the year with Jennifer Pahl from Twist Yoga.
Jennifer gives some amazing tips on how to she runs her studio, what KPI's she tracks, how she gets students, how to retain students.
Put your headphones on, get your notebook out because this episode is packed with sound advise!
About Jennifer Pahl:
After many years spent dabbling in every fitness style known to womankind, Twist Yoga founder Jennifer Pahl literally ‘landed’ on the yoga mat with an injured shoulder and a body that can be described as anything but flexible. She was certainly not a traditionally "zen" person, but she immediately fell in love with how yoga made her feel.
It quickly became clear that yoga was more than just Jennifer’s personal passion — it was her calling. She wanted to share the incredible feeling of empowerment and presence she experienced from yoga with as many people as possible. So, she left her corporate career in finance behind to open Twist Yoga -a supportive studio providing yoga, meditation and functional fitness classes to the greater Portland community. Two years later, she launched Twist Your Workplace, providing corporate wellness solutions for American workplaces. Her students loved the in studio classes, but really wanted to be able to practice with the same amazing teachers from home or on the road. In 2018, she launched online classes at Twist Yoga Anytime.
When she’s not teaching, Jennifer can be found speaking at local events, writing for wellness magazines and blogs, traveling, and spending time with her two kids, husband, and two rescue dogs; Elmer and Dante. She is also a certified Mindbody Business Consultant, a Legacy Ambassador for Lululemon and is part of Mindbody’s One Champion network as a Board Member. She served six years on the board of the Lake Oswego Schools Foundation and a proud public school supporter.

On this episode, Ingrid Thompson - Fellow Mindbody Business Consultant talks about how important keeping an eye on your business finances can save your yoga business.
Ingrid talks about her upbringing and why finances became important to her and why she cares so deeply that people and health and wellness businesses thrive with a profit mentality.
She give advice for yoga studio and solopreneurs starting up and how to overcome the mindset challenges around money and that profit is not a dirty word.
Ingrid believes that every business owner deserves to fully understand how money works in their business. Understanding business finances and how money works is rarely taught as part of the curriculum and professional training for Health and Wellbeing professionals.
Over time people develop the skills and expertise in their chosen field. As health professionals they reach a stage where they can look at a client and “just know” what’s happening in their body.
Ingrid believes that every business owner can come to understand the financial aspects of business – and it is easier and takes less time than most people believe.
Ingrid shows business owners ways to learn about and understand money and finance using simple language as she draws on 30+ years of working with and explaining the financial aspects of business to a broad range of people in business.
When you understand how money works your life changes completely and forever.

Welcome to Yoga Biz Camp with me Michael Jay.
I'm a yoga business coach with 25+ years of experience as a creative and yoga business owner and some of you may know me from the Yoga Alliance Business of Yoga Webinars
Every day, I help yogis turn their passion into a sustainable yoga business. For 13years, I ran and then sold a profitable yoga studio. I believe in sharing this experience to help others like me pursue their dream and actually succeed.
In this episode, Rachel Scott joins me for a fun, informal chat about Yoga Business post Covid and the new landscape of hustle and opportunities for yoga teachers and yoga studios.
About Rachel
A teacher trainer, author, and education expert, Rachel is committed to helping teachers and studios manifest their vision, passion, and potential. With a Masters of science in Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies, she helps studios and teachers to create high-quality in person and online training and courses. with Terri Fry
On this episode I speak with Terri Fry about how she started her business with an exit plan in mind right from day one. I love this!
Terri built her business to be a profitable and eventually sellable yoga studio. She also sold her business right in the middle of the pandemic!
Terri is a bundle of high energy with a DIY attitude who thrives on challenges. Her first words, according to her late mother, were “I do myself.” With that innate mindset, Terri isn’t afraid of taking risks and trying new things.
Terri’s work life began at an early age helping in the family run business in Monterey, California. Her horizons and knowledge-base expanded when she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began her professional sales career working for a Fortune 500 company.
A major life event motivated Terri to opt out of corporate America and follow her passion for yoga. She left corporate America with no regrets and no looking in the rear view mirror to pursue a new career path as a yoga teacher. This was the springboard which propelled her onto the entrepreneurship path of yoga studio ownership.
Having achieved all the goals Terri had set for the studio, she sold it in July 2020. Yes, in the middle of a pandemic! Terri’s next career chapter as a business consultant has begun. Putting her 30+ years of experience to good use, Terri recently launched Sweat Drop Consulting focusing on boutique yoga and fitness studios.
Terri earned a Bachelor of Arts from The University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. She holds numerous yoga training certificates including one from the Yoga Alliance. Terri’s also a Certified Mindbody Business Consultant.
When not doing yoga, Terri is an avid walker (she love’s her Fitbit!), a quilter, a great reader of historical fiction and enjoys spending time with family.
