I'm Rebecca Gagnon. I'm a coach, creative, and former electrical engineer. In this podcast, we talk about life, and how you're lived! We discuss self-improvement, spirituality, creativity, purpose, and fun, all with a gentle focus on an understanding of life that I learned while seeking answers for my own struggle with eating disorders, anxiety, and depression.

I'm so excited to have Alex on for another episode.
In this episode, we discuss our upcoming course, centered around inquiring into this simple question, "who do I think I am?" ... which often has answers that reveal the layers of belief that we walk around with.
Our identities and self-concepts are often so deep and unquestioned that they run our lives without us even noticing.
By inquiring into these layers of belief, we can allow limitations to fall away, enabling us to live life in a freer, softer, simpler way.

And what if the reliable presence of that thing we call "discomfort" is ... actually comforting?
If you think your problem is not believing in yourself enough, maybe just let that one go.
You can do things, successfully, without believing you can. Contrary to the manifesting/self-help manifesto.
Don't let a lack of confidence, or a "low-vibration" feeling, stop you from getting started.
Belief in yourself just makes the process a lot more fun. But it's not a requirement.

"Who do you think you are?" is a question that gets thrown around, rhetorically, as an insult.
But when we genuinely ask it, it has the potential to shake our entire foundation, enabling us to experience fluidity and freedom beyond our habitual self-concepts.
I'm honored to have my friend and colleague, Becky Anderson, on the podcast!
Becky is great at noticing and articulating the nuances of how the mind works and how it can make us feel stuck. This makes her a great coach, because so much freedom comes from just getting that high level view of the little innocent games and computations that our minds are making all the time, in a smart-but-not-wise effort to keep us safe.
She opens up in this episode about what it’s been like to put her work out there, and also what she’s been seeing about emotion and the way that our minds tell stories about what we’re feeling, and how that is and isn’t helpful.

What if we could truly see that there is nothing to fear in any feeling? It would change everything. There would be no need to cope using our unwanted habits and addictions. There would be no anxiety. There would be no "stuckness."
When we truly look into our feelings, and see that every single one is safe, and that the story we have in our minds has nothing to do with the feeling itself, everything changes.
www.bekaelle.com
Let's talk about anger.
We're conditioned to be afraid of feeling angry. But no harm can come from feeling a feeling. It's the resistance and bottling and "I want this feeling to go away, therefore he/she/'the situation' needs to change" that gets us into ickiness. And even "ickiness" is defined by a mind.

When we catch a glimpse of the infinite peace that is beyond our thinking, the mind says to itself, "Oh, that was nice, I want to be there ALL the time!"
The sweet little mind tries and tries and tries to quiet itself. Deep breaths. Perfect posture. The right technique. But it can't quiet itself... because that's not in its nature. Just like teeth can't chew themselves.
When we truly see that our thoughts are just thoughts- that they hold no inherent truth just because they pass through our head- we get some space. As we get curious about this, we realize that there's no reason to go on a crusade against something that is completely harmless.

I was talking to a client who said, "all of the self-care I have to fit in is exhausting me."
We took a moment to sit with that statement.
When so-called "self-care" has become just another to-do that is stressful to even think about, we have to giggle a little bit at the irony.
Peace comes from subtracting, not adding.
You already are self-care. Peaceful, loving energy is your natural state. You just have a lot of stressful thinking clouding things up, telling you that you'll only feel at peace if you get your endless to-do list done.

I also mentioned Michael Neill's book: The Inside Out Revolution. Highly recommend!
Life wants to flow through you. Sometimes the stories we get used to believing make things feel stagnant and stuck. This is what I call "resistance."
When we start to realize that pain comes less from life itself and more from our thinking that resists feelings and life in general, the mind picks up on it. It starts a new plan to "not have resistance."
But this is just another thought.
Resisting resistance is just more resistance.

When something happens, the mind loves to know why.
It's so understandable, because sometimes knowing why can help us avoid things in the future. But sometimes, especially when related to our emotions and unwanted habits, the "why" can be a bit of rabbit hole. It's helpful to process past memories and see how the brain latches onto stories that no longer serve us. But sometimes we can't even remember the memory that caused it, or it could be multiple memories, or we just don't know. Sometimes it's helpful to just feel rather than seek. The feeling just wants to be felt so it can pass through. Endless seeking and storytelling only adds tension and resistance, and makes the feeling scarier than it really is.

The more I live, the more I see that willpower is not an effective tool for lasting change.
I used to think that the reason I couldn’t stop binge eating, or stop bingeing and purging, was because of laziness and a lack of willpower. I would beat myself up incessantly for it. Til I finally discovered an easier way. The story that willpower was the answer, and that I was deficient in it, was actually contributing to my “stuckness” rather than remedying it.

The reason we don't need the magic pill is that we have a built-in detector for when we're straying away from our innate peaceful essence. That detector is our feelings.

Hello, it's me!
I’ve been sharing a lot of bits and pieces of what I’ve seen through the understanding I coach from, but if you’re new to my world, you can see I don’t often talk about the details of my struggles with eating disorders, depression, and anxiety… I just share the insights of what got me out. I think both can be helpful, and I know I learn from hearing and relating to the experiences of others. Even if my past issues aren’t yours, the moral of the story is, we all have minds. Minds all do the same thing, in different flavors. And if we’re always striving to change or control the way our minds work because we’re afraid of it, we feel stuck in painful patterns.

I talk about some things I learned on my recent trip to Costa Rica, how our minds are wrong a lot, and also some insights from a book I read about a donkey sanctuary.

If you're like me, the desire to be great at things adds so much pressure that you're too scared to even try. This episode is about sidestepping perfectionism, and viewing mistakes as a good thing, because they're the only way to get better.
This is the first AudioBlog episode! (AudiBlog? idk... still working out the branding). Bottom line: I decided to start reading my blog posts on my podcast, because sometimes listening is easier than reading. The original blog post can be found here:

In this episode, I talk about how I see strategies- tools, programs, hacks, self-help, diets- now, vs how I did before.
Sometimes we employ a strategy in an effort to feel better, but the stressing and perfectionism around it actually does the opposite. When we're in touch with the peace underneath our minds, we're not frantically solving to fix an unworthy self; we're naturally exploratory and curious, moving towards what is good for us.

If you struggle with overanalyzing everyday decisions, this one is for you!
I explain what I've seen about how we make decisions, how our mind tries to talk us out of doing stuff that's important to us, and how the mind slaps a label on our passing feelings (and is often incorrect).

In this episode, I talk about the unconscious mind... how I used to see it when I was struggling with binge eating and bulimia, compared to how I see it now. I talk about what I've learned about the evolution of the psychology world's definition of the unconscious, and how the old model seemed to trickle down into the less-helpful recovery advice that I got.

Yesterday's episode was a little spicy, so I wanted to chill the vibes out a bit by walking back on some things. I talk about how this was a good example of being new at stuff and being not on point at first but not letting that stop you. In other words... "doing stuff anyway"... even when it's scary and uncomfortable.

Felt ranty, might delete later :)
This title is mostly clickbait... but yeah... this week is a little bit of a rant-i-sode :P
I ramble about social media, how my thinking ramps up around it, and what I've come to see about that. Just an honest take of where I'm at this week.

In this episode, I talk about body image! It also happens to be the first-ever hike-isode... which means, I was hiking while recording. Tbh, I might never do that again, unless I get a lot of positive feedback about the heavy breathing.
Body image obsession was the thing that brought me to this understanding, because it was the root behind my disordered eating. I'm excited to share the first couple of insights with you.

Sometimes we strive after stuff and don't realize why. The mind tells us stories about what we need, but at the end of the day, we're really just looking for peace of mind. Things flow easier when we go for things but don't believe our worth depends on them.

Little mini episode (mini-sode? maybe it's longer than mini-sode? it's a halfie-sode?) about the whole "personal brand" concept... how overthinking how we put ourselves out there just paralyzes us unnecessarily.

In this episode, we talk about how our thinking changes on its own, and what that means about our human experience. We're so used to being handed strategies and will-power methods to change individual thoughts. What if it doesn't have to be so complicated?
I hope you enjoy!

Welcome to The Lived Podcast... where we talk about how you're lived!
In this introductory episode, I talk about my story, how I got into coaching, and the basic principles of the understanding I coach from- the one that not only helped me out of my struggles with eating disorders, anxiety, and depression, but changed the rest of my life too.
