Welcome to another episode of The Take Off where Mick is joined by a special guest. Today, we're speaking with Paudie McGrath - an old friend and a colleague!

With increasing population comes the need for more housing, commercial buildings, social spaces, and infrastructure. The latest figures in Australia showed that the gross value added by the construction industry amounted to over 150 billion Australian dollars, having recovered in 2021.

Sector-wise, the value of construction work in the private sector was significantly higher than in the public sector. Construction activity varied across states and included residential, non-residential, and infrastructure projects. Employment in this industry rose to around 1.18 million people in 2022, having witnessed a decline in employee numbers in 2020 and 2021. With the booming market, how can we overcome labor shortages? Women are usually outnumbered by men. In the Australian construction industry, women make up only 12 percent of the workforce. And this gap is getting worse, not better. This probably wouldn’t matter, if it wasn’t for the fact that many women WANT to work in construction.

Suggesting Solutions VS Doing the Work 😎

Welcome to another episode of The Take Off where Mick talks about why Contractors are paid more than Consultancies. While both job titles can be profitable and allow for a flexible work schedule, the key difference is that a company usually hires contractors to complete a specific task, while consultants may have a broader scope of responsibilities. Consultants are usually brought on to create solutions that can optimize a business’s productivity and bottom line using technology and processes that the business might not know about.

There are several differences between operating as a contractor and a consultant. The big difference is that contractors actually perform work to complete a task, and consultants create solutions to guide how a company can conduct its workflow. There are more subtle differences in how the two designations operate, listen now to find out more!

Don’t forget that you can only sell a thing that you have proficiency in 😎

Mick is back with another episode of The Take Off where he talks about why the Construction could fail in 2023. In reality, the real causes of construction company failure are within the control of the company owner. That doesn’t mean these causes are always easy to fix.

There are literally hundreds of reasons why construction companies fail and have to close up shops. When construction companies fail, it’s typically not caused by a single issue. In most cases, there are a number of contributing factors and missteps that led to their failure. While outside factors can play a role, just look at the Great Recession, most companies fail from within.

Today, Mick talks about the four root causes that lead to construction companies going out of business. Listen now to find out more!

It’s not about talent or how good you’re. It’s about how much you’re NEEDED 🚧

Mick is back with another episode of The Take-Off ✈️ where he talks about why construction and Engineering companies should start considering professionals from overseas.

Australian businesses are crying out for more workers with the country in the middle of one of its largest-ever labour shortages. There are more than 423,000 job vacancies, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Mostly, candidates in the current market are moving for better salaries which is approximately a 60% rise, or for a more senior role. Where else, professionals from overseas are moving only for a 30-40% rise and for real reasons and a better lifestyle.

In this episode, Mick talks about how the construction industry won’t be able to survive for long if they don’t hire professionals from overseas. Listen now to find out more and give us a review if you find this useful.

Chasing money is worse than dogs chasing cars💲

Mick is back with another episode of The Take-Off ✈️ where he talks about why one should stop chasing money to be successful in their career.

Well, a lot of us work for fame and money. But will that take us to places where we want to reach? The greatest reward of becoming a millionaire is not the amount of money that you earn. It is the kind of person that you have to become to become a millionaire.

Changing jobs just for more money? The biggest mark against a candidate is having a history of hopping from job to job in relatively short intervals. Yes, job-hopping can still hurt one’s career, despite how the job landscape has changed in recent years.

In this episode, Mick shares 5 reasons why you should STOP chasing money. Listen now to find out more!

It's not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change 📈

Mick is back with another episode of The Take-Off ✈️ where he talks about the quantity surveying industry in AU. He has been recruiting for PQS firms for over 10 years including Ireland, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand and talks about how the quantity surveying role is unrecognized in AU.

The future of the surveying profession is an issue that has been lingering for many years. Recently, the concern has been growing wider and louder among surveyors. Some surveyors contend that the surveying profession, in its current form, is heading toward extinction. Their reasons include a gradual decline in the number of qualified and licensed professionals, the impact of emerging technologies, sophisticated and more capable equipment, and a decline in the number of new graduates in the profession. Others have even considered it a less rewarding profession. But are these reasons valid and if so, is there a solution to the problem? To address these questions, one needs to look at current challenges to the profession as well as the possible impact of any factors that could adversely impact the future of the profession.

In this episode, Mick shares 5 reasons why the quantity surveying industry might die. Listen now to find out more!

Taking time off from work is a chance to get away from the routine to recharge your soul 🔋

Mick is back with another episode of The Take-Off ✈️ where he talks about his 2.5 weeks of traveling around the U.S and Mexico and how this has helped in both his personal and professional life.

There is nothing quite like a good holiday and it is a great chance to escape your daily routine and see new places, but these trips are also important in terms of health and well-being. A holiday can be a chance to improve your physical and mental well-being so they are experiences that everyone should be taking advantage of at least once a year. Despite this, many people do not go on holiday often for work-related reasons but this could have a negative impact in many ways.

There’s much more to a holiday than simply taking time off work and enjoying yourself. Holidays also help improve productivity and creativity and strengthen relationships. In this episode, Mick talks about the benefits of holidays and why they are so important. Listen now to find out more!

Brains just like the hearts love recognition 🧠

Mick is back with another episode of The Take-Off ✈️ where he talks about why construction companies are not able to RETAIN their people.

Retaining employees is not an easy task, yet every business cannot afford to keep hiring. It is, therefore, a company's responsibility to ensure they treat their employees well both to motivate and retain them for a longer period. One of the most useful ways companies use to maximize productivity and performance is by maximizing employees' commitment and motivation.

It is widely accepted that employers must deliver clear and defined employee value propositions for staff to motivate them to stay with the company. However, what’s important to one individual may not be valued by another. Australians rank work-life balance, job security, and location as the primary motivators to stay in their role. This was closely followed by salary and benefits, plus flexible working arrangements.

In this episode, Mick talks about how construction companies can strike a balance between Recruiting and Retention. Listen now to find out more!

Social media is not media. The key is to listen, engage, and build relationships!📡

Mick is back with another episode of The Take-Off ✈️ where he talks about why construction companies should be using SOCIAL MEDIA more effectively.

Social media is no longer a meme-sharing platform. It’s a valuable tool for brands to gain rich insights, and customers and grow their reputation.

Communication is one of the major areas that have been revolutionized by the inception of social media. In this day and age, communication is the key to success. This is where social media can be used effectively in order to connect with more people and that too in a quality-oriented manner. Different channels like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram can be used to connect with your contractors, developers, and clients, and make sure you stay in touch with all of them irrespective of place, time, and space.

In this episode, Mick talks about why social media is crucial for your business and how you can engage with your audiences. Listen now to find out more!

What you plant now, you will harvest later! 🌱

Mick is back with another episode of The Take-Off ✈️ where he talks about how the construction industry can employ and retain more Contract Administrators effectively.

With the increasing population in Australia comes the need for more housing, commercial buildings, social spaces, and infrastructure. Employment in this industry rose to 1.18 million people in 2019, however, declined in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. Sector-wise, the value of construction work in the private sector was significantly higher than in the public sector. It's interesting to see how the market has shifted and skilled Contract Administrators are in high demand now compared to a couple of years ago when they were struggling to find employment.

Here's what Mick shares about what construction companies MUST consider when hiring:

  1. Plan Ahead! By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail
  2. Clear & define career progression plan in place
  3. It's not just a job advert, it's a dream
  4. Use existing employees' progression path as an example
  5. No CAs in the market. Why not consider a QS?
  6. Don't interview, you need to SELL
  7. Master your social media. You are what you share!
  8. Build your brand awareness by sponsoring events
  9. Meet at a café or pub and build a relationship with your potential hire
  10. Onboarding is an art.

It is a marathon, not a sprint.

Mick is back (after a year) with a new season starting this week - The Take-Off ✈️

The 2020 Covid-19 pandemic pulled the rug out from almost every business in the world, and the industry had to learn to adjust quickly. Some adjusted well, and the others sadly could not ride the wave. It's been a few years of ups and downs and it's affected us all in different ways.

This week on MEA$URED. Today on our podcast, we will be talking about how construction companies are currently facing major challenges and what you can do as an employer or contractor in order to hold on to your best people.

Giving your people feedback is an excellent way to help them grow and thrive within the organization. You can congratulate them, provide constructive feedback for their improvement, or simply be present as someone who cares about what they're going through. It's critical to not only recognize employees on a regular basis but also to take the time to evaluate how things are going with each individual employee so we know if we need any additional assistance in meeting goals.

You're going to have career development in your business. And that might not only be financially or through many different means but also with the vision - getting them excited about what you do and how it benefits their lives. You can set KPIs for these new employees so they know where their goals lie; if one doesn't meet those expectations then stick by the word when giving out promotions because reputation is everything.

Making your employees feel like they're a part of something important is the best way to get them on board. Visionaries and innovators who will champion change in the name of progress are needed in the construction industry. The most important aspect of building a great company is not always what you do; it is how your role within that business inspires others to join your cause.

Training and development are not just for the corporate world; they're necessary to keep employees engaged. If you want your company successful, it needs people who will stay updated on what's happening within their job function or field of expertise- which means that if any knowledge gaps exist now or ever, there should be some sorta training program in place.

Giving your employees salary and bonuses compensation is not something you should take lightly. Employees want stability in order to show up every day at work knowing that their hard work will be rewarded by increased responsibilities or rewards which are fair regarding performance levels already reached.

Australia’s only pre-construction recruitment specialist.

Today's episode of MEA$URED with Mick Donaghy features an interview with Mikael Heinonen, a qualified quantity surveyor and co-founder of Collabaloop, a construction technology startup with a mission to incrementally transform the culture within the construction industry. As well, he is also the chief enabler of the build better network and someone with experience working for consultancies, main contractors, and large mining organizations.

He introduces himself to the people, what he's up to at present and his plans for this industry. He tells us about how he first got into the field of quantity surveying and why it was such an appealing profession for him. He also talks a bit about his background with consultancy work, then contractor side jobs as well, in total there are different types of perspectives. In this interview with him, he tells the story of how he got his Viking helmet, a prestigious position as a quantity surveyor.

Mikael shares his journey from being in a well-paying, stable position to starting something new and different. He talks about the challenges that come with building an entirely new company as opposed to incremental growth at your current job; how it is important for entrepreneurs not only to be good business people but also to know their limitations because you cannot do everything yourself! He goes into great detail on what led him here today; how many factors were involved including going back through MBA. Looking inward, self-analysis was really helpful too when understanding some things better himself rather than just relying on.

In this episode, Mikael discusses innovation in the construction industry, that collaboration is a big part of what you want to achieve with the color blue. He tells the reason why he focuses on apprentices and how they need support otherwise it’s pointless. Employers should create a healthy workplace culture that people want to turn up each day and give their best. This goes a long way in terms of doing what you need for success, so it's important.

There's a lot of evidence out there to show that diversity is good for business. It increases creativity and innovation, as well as productivity. It’s one way to stay ahead in today’s competitive landscape. Having diverse cultures with an emphasis on unity and strong female leadership will do wonders too.

Understanding what makes a project successful. And one way that we do this is by measuring those critical aspects of projects like how well they are going, and if there's anything not working correctly too as it relates to psychological safety within an organization which all have big impacts on whether or not people feel comfortable speaking up with their ideas when needed most. The quantity surveyor is becoming more and more dominant in today's work environment. This should not surprise anyone; after all, it was their job to make sure that nothing goes wrong with the project at hand. It would help everyone if they could keep this up-to-date perspective on themselves by looking for ways of improvement where possible.

Reinforcing positive culture within the construction industry. https://au.linkedin.com/in/mikael-heinonen

This episode of MEA$URED with Mick Donaghy features Michael Manikas, the general manager and majority owner at Australia-based business DLG Shape. The company provides construction fit-out and refurbishment services across all sectors for both private clients as well as government organizations across Australia - and they're an Aboriginal-owned enterprise! In fact, he is a qualified quantity surveyor and the former CEO of the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

In this podcast, Michael shares his experience working both for tier-one contractors and consultancies. He is deeply committed to helping out in the construction industry by engaging more Aboriginal indigenous groups with relevant skill sets who would like a chance at success onsite - Australia currently has an imbalance in this space that majorly needs attention.

Michael’s message of unity was one I found inspiring. Not only did he have a burning desire to empower the Indigenous community, but also his humility and selflessness towards all First Nations people is something we should take note of as an industry.

Michael talks about why he became a quantity surveyor, where he grew up, and how someone in his family has been involved in the construction industry. He also shares some of the interesting people he met along this journey.

Michael discusses his struggles through his early career and anything that was a little harder to come. To get comfortable working for the builder, he had learned or do something in order to be into mindset; it made sense at this point of time when going into the CEO role with a prestigious company where diversity is a key element. Michaels’s strengths lie in how well he gets along with people. He talks about his current position in DLG and his responsibility there as per real vision regarding aboriginal communities.

He wants to inspire more Aboriginal people and others from indigenous backgrounds. As someone who's seen first-hand how the construction industry has helped build community with pride, he knows that there are many opportunities out in this field for those seeking them.

There is nothing like a person's touch to leave an industry behind Michael quote “And if I can help some of them in some way, I feel like I've left the industry in this place a bit of person.”

On this episode of MEA$URED Mick shines light on some of the talented migrants we have living in Australia who aren't given a chance by Australian companies due to a lack of local experience.

Although we are facing one of the biggest resource shortages in many years, Candidates like Hani Mahmoud, a qualified civil engineer, who is professionally recognised by Engineers Australia, cannot get a foot through the door of any local companies.

Hani is an Australian Permanent Resident, he has 15 years experience on major infrastructure, roads, highways and drainage projects. His kids go to Australian schools and he pays Australian taxes.

Hani has applied to over 100 jobs. He has barely received feedback from a hiring manager or recruiter. No local experience = no good.

Whilst many local companies struggle to find qualified people to join their business, Hani and thousands of other qualified Migrants are becoming disillusioned by the job market in Australia and will likely return to their home countries or retrain and enter a new market.

They aren't here to apply for Job Seeker, they are here to work, improve their lives for their families and to add value to Australia.

In in my opinion giving candidates like Hani a blanket rejection without even meeting them is not good enough; we must change our mindset or get ready for the unavoidable brain drain Australia is likely to experience in years to come.
