The background music in this episode comes from the Taizé community, a monastic community composed of more than 100 Catholic and Protestant Brothers located in Taizé, France. Taizé prayer services have become quite popular the world over, and are known in part for the simple, worshipful music they incorporate. A note on the music used in this guide: Circa 1999 I walked into a favorite used bookstore in rural western Massachusetts, The Montague Book Mill (whose very appropriate tagline is, Books you don't need in a place you can't find). Over the sound system I heard what sounded like beautiful baroque guitar music. Then I turned a corner to discover that the music was actually live, and was being played not on a guitar, but on an 11-string lute-like instrument called an Arch Guitar. I bought the musician's CD on the spot and have listened to it regularly ever since. Todays reflection offers eight of the tracks from this album. They are: Suite BWV 1007: Prelude (J.S. This audio reflection guide will take about an hour to lead you through the same material that is in the printed Directed Reflection Packet that accompanies this retreat. Feel free to use either resource, just pick the one that works the best for you.
I'd like to offer a brief explanation of the music that accompanies this reflection guide: Having lived in Madrid as children, my brother and I had a chance to return there together in 2005. One night while strolling through Plaza Mayor, we were both stopped in our tracks by something we heard. It turned out to be a street performer playing classical guitar. As sometimes happens, we both stood there transfixed, watching and listening for at least a half an hour. The artist turned out to be a Russian man named Alexander Orlov who had emigrated to Spain to study guitar. It wasn't just the man's technical proficiency that was so arresting, it was his phrasing and interpretation of some of the familiar repertoire that left us spellbound. We gladly put money in his hat, and we eagerly purchased his CD which was appropriately titled "Plaza Mayor". We've been playing it ever since. It often serves as the soundtrack to the cooking of a meal in either one of our houses. It never gets old. Unfortunately the disk is not available commercially as far as I can tell. But I've used six of the tracks from "Plaza Mayor" as the background music for this reflection:

This guide was created as a reflective exercise for IJM staff during the 2020 lockdown. It forms part of an innovative set of tools created to offer spiritual reflection and refreshment during the unique challenges of COVID lockdown and the move to 100% remote work.
