Finally got my MBA and what to do with all the time! I’ve been so used to doing 20 hours of school work a week, daily meetings with classmates and working on assignments…but now I have time… The scariest part of working is having all that time so I could have time to do nothing. It’s been a fun ride but here are some thoughts about what to do once an MBA goal is complete.

It’s really cool to “make money at what you love” but sometimes you have to do something that isn’t about money. I know…breath it's going to be ok! There is a need for everyone to do something because you love it, and not complicate the equation with trying to build a business from that hobby. I’ve started multiple companies that started as hobbies so maybe it's part of the hobby lifecycle to have a desire to do something for nothing which grows into something.
The 5 stages of hobby to business and back:
Stage 1: Interest in a new skill or hobby
Stage 2: You’re now good enough that people you know ask you to do the hobby for money
Stage 3: Good enough that people you DON’T know ask you to do the hobby for money
Stage 4: Making too much money that you need to form a business to save on taxes/liability
Stage 5: Find another hobby to escape your new business and start again at stage 1
Enjoy!

I get it, don’t worry…I’m not saying that remote work is evil but there needs to be a balance between in person and remote to succeed in business today. There must be facetime as needed and remote work not stigmatized by those that choose to be in the office more. Here are 5 reasons why remote only work is a bad career move.

S1E25 - Knowing when to quit is important
There are times in life when either a job, group or team just doesn’t seem to be working as it should. When there is more effort needed to get together than the fun/excitement from whatever you’re doing…you have to ask yourself if it’s time to quit. Many people like to say that gritting though issue is important but that only is true if the payoff is worth it.
When you should quit:
You can do it, and it’s worth it everytime.

This is the big brother of analysis paralysis at its heart. Never moving forward till every minute detail is hammered out and forgetting about your biggest ally, time. S1E16 - Why Kanban is better than Scrum for Development
Kanban is a better system than Scrum for development, but scrum is better if you’re in management trying to measure work on projects.
Scrum has many extra steps to getting stuff built such as:
Kanban is a much simpler model and one focused on delivering tasks as soon as they are done and is more resilient to changes in scope or priorities.
Scrum is mainly about ceremonies and is great for managers that need to talk about deliveries on a regular basis. Kanban is much more fluid but results in far less time spent on ceremonies and more on completing tasks from the assigned product backlog.

Performance Conversations: How to Use Questions to Coach Employees, Improve Productivity, and Boost Confidence (Without Appraisals!) by Christopher Lee
About the book:
“There are three universal truths about traditional performance management. They are widely used, universally despised, and are known to be ineffective. These reasons are cited in the recent spate of announcements from dozens of major corporations who have abandoned their appraisal systems. As a result, many organizations are grappling with what to do instead. They have adopted many interesting and innovative practices, but most are a random collection of activities that are not bound together by a sound theoretical framework. This new approach is built upon a sound theoretical foundation, uses proven management techniques, and offers a novel framework and tool for managers for regulating and enhancing the performance of their staff. Dozens of ready-to-use templates and accompanying tools help make good management practice more accessible, practical, and effective. Just as important, the new approach is both millennial- and remote worker-friendly as it incorporates features that speak to how they work.”

Chunking - Big problems need to be broken down into smaller chunks/tasks.
Timing, If there is a priority due to timing (Deadlines or time sensitive info) then priority should go to the item with maximum utility for the lowest amount of work needed. IF it’s a BIG problem, then chunk it down to start making forward progress
Always find a way to bring a big problem into small chunks to make forward progress an element to your issue. You’ll never get anywhere trying to eat an elephant!

10 Tips for Successful Public Speaking
From Toastmasters International - https://www.toastmasters.org/
1 . Know the room . Be familiar with the place in which you will speak. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.
2 . Know the audience. Greet some of the audience as they arrive. It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers.
3 . Know your material. If you’re not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase. Practice your speech and revise it if necessary.
5 . Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear and assured. When you visualize yourself as successful, you will be successful.
6 . Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. They don’t want you to fail.
8 . Concentrate on the message – not the medium. Focus your attention away from your own anxieties and outwardly toward your message and your audience. Your nervousness will dissipate.
9 . Turn nervousness into positive energy. Harness your nervous energy and transform it into vitality and enthusiasm .
10 . Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. A Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need.

The engineering process from Musk's experience:
1 - make requirements less dumb
2 - try very hard to delete steps of the process
3 - simplify / optimize
4 - accelerate cycle time
5 - automate
From Everyday Astronaut YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/t705r8ICkRw
https://tulip.co/blog/cycle-vs-lead-vs-takt/
Cycle Time Definition Cycle Time is the amount of time a team spends actually working on producing an item, up until the product is ready for shipment. It is the time it takes to complete one task. This includes time spent producing the item and the wait stages (amount of time the task is left ‘waiting’ on the board) between active work times.
Lead Time Definition Lead time is the time measured from the moment a client puts in an order to when the final product gets delivered.
Takt Time Definition Takt Time in German means rhythm. It is the steady ‘beat’ to which production must follow to satisfy the demands of the customer.
Takt time is the rate at which manufacturing processes and systems need to complete the production in order to meet the customer's request. Therefore, this is less of measuring the total time it takes to complete a segment or the entirety of the production.
Cycle Time Example Suppose your team works 40 hours a week, producing a total of 160 units.
The key to keeping a good production system is to maintain the Takt Time just below Cycle Time. If your Takt time is more than 15 minutes, you may have difficulties meeting the customer demand. Reducing Cycle Time is one of many ways to keep the operations on a steady, manageable schedule.
