What happens when you ask a world traveler, a life-coach, a one-woman-show-stopper and (finally) sober woman from the South what she thinks about life? You get “Now That You Ask.” A podcast that looks at topics that range from death to desire, and from wondrous to downright whacky. Akasha Halsey is a woman who after seventy-five years on this planet, is ready to have her say! The podcasts are short (the time it takes to down a cup of coffee) and while they will often make you smile, they will always make you think.
On this poignant Friday the 13th, I find myself consumed by a sense of melancholy. Despite years of therapy, the sadness resurfaces, prompting me to look back on past regrets and unfulfilled desires. Yet, amidst the heaviness, I recognize the countless blessings and dreams I have realized, offering immense satisfaction and fulfillment. I am learning to embrace and integrate melancholy, using it as a guide toward self-compassion, gratitude, and a profound sense of hope for the future.

This transformative experience not only boosted my confidence but also helped me connect deeply with my writing and the audience, proving that synchronicity can lead to remarkable personal growth and fulfillment.

I have a deep-rooted love for Alabama football, a tradition handed down from my daddy (who would have celebrated his 104th birthday today). Growing up in the South, Saturdays were marked by football gatherings, food, and camaraderie. Listen as I share fond memories of these gatherings, the joy and anguish of being an Alabama fan, and how this passion was rekindled in my 40s. Now, as a diehard fan, I follow not only my college team but also Alabama alumni in the NFL. Football remains a cherished tradition in my life, filling my Saturdays with excitement and community.

The universe often throws unexpected changes our way, disrupting our plans and shaking our expectations. These moments have shaped my perspective on trust and adaptability and I've learned to view these disruptions as opportunities for growth and discovery. One of the bigger lessons I've learned is that we must let go of rigid expectations and remain open to the new possibilities that come our way.

Like many people of the world, I recently watched a bit of the Olympics and found myself somewhat awestruck. After seeing those inspiring athletes and, believe it nor not, as a result of my own experience working with a trainer at the gym, I am reminded of the significance of perseverance and recalibration in achieving fitness goals. There is great value of self-belief, adapting to challenges, and achieving personal victories in both physical fitness and life. Reset and finish strong.

Horse people are a community unto their own. My dear friend Nancy, a passionate horsewoman, is the one introduced me to the world of horses and riding about 20 years ago. It's quite remarkable how much there is to learn and master when it comes to riding and Nancy loved every aspect of it. Despite my initial apprehension towards horses due to a childhood incident, I have found joy in witnessing Nancy's daughter, Kate, and her granddaughter, Carter, embrace their love for horses. In fact, it was at Carter's first horse show, where I was moved to tears by the resemblance between Carter and Nancy, and the enduring impact of friendship and shared passion for horses.

I love finding a loophole and thinking that I can cheat the system just a little bit. Over the years, I've become quite good at identifying ways to do less and still achieve the same result. However, I've also learned that there are some areas where there are no loopholes. As I've grown older, finding loopholes has become more challenging, and the consequences seem more significant. Contemplating age, I realize I have a choice: to define myself by years or by how I truly feel. This awareness becomes crucial in navigating moments of feeling low. Despite occasional dips, I acknowledge the power to decide whether to carry these emotions with me or let them go. From a simpler lifestyle abroad to an introspective journey within, I've learned to appreciate life by slowing down, taking stock, and feeling younger, even if just for a moment. Life, viewed through the lens of how I feel, becomes a reminder that there's joy in recognizing the room for growth, improvement, and appreciation.

With crisis comes lessons. In this episode, I reflect on the lessons I learned and the determination that arose from a medical event I experienced in my twenties. It was scary. It was frustrating. But with that challenge I discovered that I know my body best and made a vow to take control of my healthcare decisions. Please enjoy this intimate exploration of resilience and the power of self-advocacy.

I recently had a truly transformative experience visiting Kehinde Wiley's exhibit, "An Archaeology of Silence," at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. In an attempt to capture the profound impact of the artwork, this episode is a heartfelt letter to the artist, expressing my gratitude and awe. Wiley's colossal paintings of young black individuals, both living and deceased, set against nature and contemporary clothing, left an indelible mark on my soul. The sculptures, larger than life and brimming with life even in their portrayal of death, moved me from one existential moment to another. Wiley's work has moved me in a way that no other art has in my 77 years, and this experience has rekindled a sense of newness in my life, and for that, I am endlessly thankful.
Admittedly, this letter took days to write and still feels a paltry expression of all I experienced. Please take a moment to visit Kehinde Wiley's website at https://kehindewiley.com/.

I was raised with strict rules about how to be, how to act, and what to say. But I was born with the instinct to defy societal expectations and strict rules that don't align with my true self. Despite getting caught and facing punishment as a child, I found joy in pursuing activities that resonated with me, ultimately learning the importance of embracing one's authentic self. Today, I look back with a smile, cherishing the adventurous, quirky part of myself that I once felt compelled to hide.

I try to pay attention to messages from the universe before they reach a critical point. I also have a love for shrimp, passed down from my father. Our family business sold shrimp in bulk, but it was rarely on our table. This is a story about how a surplus of shrimp lead to series of eerie events and reminded me to heed the universe's subtle messages ... or else.

Recently I've been pondering ways to find deeper rest and contentment. I have managed to find a connection with my passion for football (especially Alabama football) of all things. Yes, watching football, despite not offering deep rest, reconnects me to joy and my family's traditions. While there's a fear of missing out on new experiences, I'm content with my quieter lifestyle, embracing football as a way to explore my inner self, find satisfaction, and reject FOMO. Right now, I'm saving my energy for those triumphant touchdowns that make me leap off the couch with joy.

Today, as I walked around my condo complex, lamenting the lack of amazement in my life, I stumbled upon a remarkable event. A distressed baby deer, trapped in a wrought iron fence, and its concerned mother and sibling became the unexpected stars of my day. This unexpected encounter left me in awe and served as a poignant reminder that amazement can still find its way into our lives when we least expect it, even during a routine walk in a familiar place.

I am having a horrible time coming to terms with my age. I constantly find myself grappling with the challenges and changes that come with it. But I feel that finding comfort and stability at home is actually a treasured aspect of aging, offering a warm welcome to a phase of life I didn't anticipate but have come to embrace.

Birthday celebrations are memorable occasions to be sure. I personally love an unusual birthday. It all started with my 40th birthday celebration at Rock and Bowl in San Francisco and the memories range from frigid temperatures at Baker Beach, ice cream cake and a bookstore, a lagoon in Larksburg, and even some Kentucky Fried Chicken. This year was a little different.

I have been struggling of late with recognizing what is mine to face and what is not mine. When I see people I love struggling, I want to swoop in and help them. However, I am learning that it is not always my place and I know I can be a bit overzealous to the point of making their problem all about me. So, it seems I need to make a change and an effort to stay in my lane, so to speak, or to not speak as is the case. I do love silence, but keeping my mouth shut is a different thing all together. I'm also sensing that along with keeping my mouth shut, I need to keep my mind open.

This episode is another in a series about my father and the end of his life. His dementia started slowly but with great enthusiasm. He began to forget things that he knew he should remember and this made him so mad he would ball up his hands into fists and shake his head side to side. Getting older is a fight I know I am losing but still there is a part of me that is in denial about it. I'll admit it is getting harder and harder to deny it especially when my body is trying its best to tell me the truth. I might just need to rethink my thoughts about aging.

It seems my denial, or "selective procrastination" as I like to call it, is wearing off and I am feeling my age more and more these days. Most notably, I have observed that I have become invisible to a large portion of our population. Will I let this stop me from enjoying my age? Knowing me, what do you think?

When I am feeling distressed or overwhelmed, I easily default to anger, sadness, helplessness, and fear. I am also prone to wanting immediate gratification. What does not come naturally to me, is asking for help and to pause ... wait.
Over the years I have cultivated my own creative and powerful approach to asking for the help I need at any time. While I still may struggle at times with asking part, the help and guidance I receive is nothing less than grace itself.

Until recently, I was pretty sure I hadn't met a cheese I didn't like. To be fair, the cheese currently in question used to be a favorite of mine. Now, I find it uninspiring to say the least. Cemeteries hold a special place for me. I especially love visiting my Aunt Kitty's family plot and her pink marble headstone. When I visit her I am flooded with memories which, along with her grave site, I visit happily. I enjoy walking through cemeteries and find them tranquil and beautiful. An earthquake woke me up at 5am. This is not a metaphor. Although it does get me thinking about metaphors, mortality, and whether or not I am prepared for "the big one." Does Wonder Woman ever have bad days? How does she feel after she saves the day? I can definitely say that I am good in a crisis. When an emergency arises, I am clear-headed about what needs to happen and I take action. It’s afterwards when the threat has passed that the downward spiral begins. This is when self-judgment, anxiety, and mopiness sets in. When I lose my footing and slip into negativity like this I find I have to remind myself to be positive about being negative, even (if you can believe it) when it comes to a negative COVID-19 test result. How do you step away from self-centeredness when it's not serving you? I like to think that I will show up one hundred percent for other people in my life when they need me to, but the truth is sometimes I know I am not fully engaged.
