In this workshop, we will discuss the theory behind and reasons for a brief intervention approach, will provide training in and practice with specific motivational interviewing strategies, and will consider ways to incorporate these approaches into conversations already taking place with students across campus.

Additionally, there is recent research on marijuana and the clear implications for college student health that we will review, including impacts on cognitive functioning, mental health, risk for addiction, and other unwanted effects. Along with lessons learned from a legal state, we will discuss these findings in the context of the brief intervention content from earlier in the day.

This presentation will provide information about how the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is utilizing their Year One College Alcohol Profile (Y1CAP) to serve a variety of purposes in their efforts to reduce high-risk drinking among students. The Y1CAP is a web-based prevention tool that uses brief motivational intervention techniques to communicate with entering students about alcohol consumption prior to their arrival on campus each fall. The Y1CAP is also used to communicate campus and community standards and policies related to alcohol and sexual assault and provides the university with valuable information about their incoming class that can help guide prevention efforts throughout the academic year. Brief Motivational Intervention is a proven strategy for addressing high-risk drinking and personalized feedback programs are certainly not new but the variety of applications for these types of programs are largely unexplored. During the webinar, we will discuss the predictive value of the Y1CAP and similar programs in relation to student retention and enrollment. We will also discuss how the Y1CAP data, in combination with other data sources, can be used to create group profiles for Greek chapters, student organizations, athletics, housing units, etc. and how each unique profile can be used by staff to implement tailored prevention programming for students.

Research consistently finds an association between sexual violence and alcohol. However, the nature of that association is complex, so translating these findings into successful prevention efforts can be challenging. This training will provide a unique opportunity for campus sexual violence and alcohol prevention professionals to come together and explore these issues. The session is designed to foster a dialogue about how these issues intersect and provide an opportunity for participants to generate ideas about how best to approach these issues in their own prevention efforts. The session will begin with a review of research findings about sexual violence and alcohol and an overview of a framework for effective prevention on college campuses that consists of a set of best practice principles and a strategic planning process. Through interactive exercises, discussion, and sharing ideas, participants will explore the implications of the research and best practices for creating more effective prevention and education efforts and finding opportunities for collaboration and mutual support across alcohol and violence prevention efforts. The workshop will touch on an array of specific topics, including the relationship of the alcohol/sexual violence intersection to consent, social norms, skill-building, bystander intervention, and environmental management.

Addressing High-Risk Drinking Embedded in Group Membership: The Failsafe Student Leader Toolkit College prevention specialists have known for decades that high-risk drinking is often clustered into social groups and communities that can become, as sociologist Steven Lyng describes, “edgework communities.” College campuses provide a perfect breeding ground for these communities with fraternities and sororities, sports clubs, recognized student organizations, and even group-oriented co-curricular activities like marching or pep bands or student newspapers. Understanding how high-risk communities operate socially helps us focus prevention and intervention efforts to incorporate group dynamics such as group culture, expectation setting, peer enforcement, and peer intervention. The Failsafe Student Leader Toolkit was created to adapt evidence-based strategies for use with these groups. An online collection of videos, scripts, templates, and instructions, the toolkit enables student leaders to work autonomously with their membership, utilizing the power of leader influence while delivering tried and true individual and environmental strategies. Tom Workman, creator of the toolkit, will discuss the theory used to develop the toolkit, demonstrate the toolkit, and train NCC members on how to use the toolkit on campus.
