Healthcare is Human (HIH) is an independent project where healthcare workers tell their own stories. Dr. Ryan McCarthy interviews and photographer Molly Humphreys takes candid pictures of healthcare workers. Project material is available on Facebook, Instagram, with other platforms under development. Kym Mattioli produces the podcast. HIH is supported by a grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council.

Healthcare is Human: Recovery Series continues an in-depth look at individuals working in substance abuse recovery in Martinsburg, WV. Who are the incredible folks doing this important work? With such a difficult disease, why do they choose to work in recovery?
We meet Rebecca Bingman, a peer recovery counselor, who describes her approach to reaching people suffering from substance abuse disorder (SUD). “Meeting somebody where they are, it starts with not being judgmental–a smile, looking them in the eye, how I'm sitting, it's the simple stuff.”
“Being able to actually actively listen and hear what they need. Maybe it is a person to watch their cat, which might be the only thing that's keeping them alive at this moment. Meeting people in language, talking about a shooting gallery, a get-off house, and knowing what that is, and not using it in a condescending manner. And not being shocked when they tell me this horrible thing that either happened to them, or they’ve done to somebody, to further their disorder.”
“What do you want to address today? Is that what we're here for? Are we addressing another part? And knowing that they're not going to be criticized. We're living life with a disorder. It's the same as me having diabetes–nobody criticizes me for that. But tell them that you have a substance use disorder, and then get frowned upon at the pharmacy after having surgery and are in need of pain medication.”
“I can pick you out of a room every time. It's not tattooed on our foreheads or anything like that. I just know, and I don't know how to explain it. I've been in the room where I've been judged by people like me. And I've also been in the room where I've been accepted and been loved. And it's just how I present myself: being open.”

We meet Kimberly Craig RN, who says, “Each patient who comes through here (the crisis center) is human, just like myself or anybody in this room. They're humans and they make mistakes. And sometimes those mistakes are drug and alcohol use. That does not make them any less of a person.”
“When you present someone with care, love, hope, that could be the deciding factor on whether or not they continue to abuse drugs, or not.”

We meet Alessia Brand who says, “Addiction is a brain disease and I try to train and educate our patients to understand their brain gets hijacked. In the beginning, they do have this choice, but, once they're addicted, their brain is after dopamine. That's what they feel like they need to survive. The beauty of the Crisis Support and Recovery Center team is that we all bring different experiences and we have staff who are in recovery themselves. We couldn't do this without them because that fact really resonates with our patients.”

We meet Angie Gray RN, a public health nurse who says, “My goal is to see West Virginia wild, wonderful, and well. We need to be looking at healthcare through a social lens and those social determinants of health, because that's what clogs up the whole system, if they don't have all those other pieces, wraparound services, affordable housing, and all those things.”

“I was born within the walls of this hospital in 1988 and graduated from Hedgesville High School in 2006. I've been here for 20 years and have worked in several different positions. I am currently the nurse manager on the sixth floor telemetry unit at Berkeley Medical Center,” Adriana tells Healthcare is Human.

In our latest podcast episode, we meet Rachel Mattherly, RN. Born and raised in Fairmont, WV, she attributes her small and friendly hometown as a key influence on her decision to go into healthcare.
An alumnus of Fairmont State University School of Nursing, Rachel says she enjoys the tightly knit oncology unit where she works at the Berkeley Medical Center. “I think I have found my niche in oncology. We often have repeat patients and we get to know them and their families. We also see people out in the community, “ says Rachel about nursing in Martinsburg, WV.

In this episode, we meet Natalie Smith RN, a nurse who cultivates her compassion through creative outlets. What started as a hobby has become an essential burnout prevention strategy for Natalie, allowing her to bring joy and laughter to nursing.
