Katrina chats with Heilok Cheng this week regarding her fascinating PhD venture and brilliant use of REDCap in research projects. Heilok is a PhD Candidate at the University of Sydney, and her thesis is entitled, ‘Bottle feeding practices early childhood caries and child obesity.’ Heilok has completed a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is also a research assistant at Australian Catholic University’s Nursing Research Institute and Deakin University, working on systematic literature reviews and managing participant data collection on the state-wide INFANT programand the national Let’s Grow clinical trial to support toddler physical development. Heliok’s previous work included an infant feeding practices study for the NSW Ministry of Health at Sydney Local Health District.

Welcome to episode 16! On today's episode Dion and Belle pair up to bring you a first conversation with the new Head of School and Dean of the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Sydney, Professor Brendan McCormack. Hailing from Irish beginnings and recently relocating from Scotland, Prof Brendan is an internationally renowned nursing leader. Prof Brendan's research focuses on person-centredness with a particular focus on the development of person-centred cultures, practices and processes. Prof Brendan has had success at introducing person-centredness at the clinical level, and then further extending it into a leadership style. In this episode, Belle and Dion explore this further with Prof Brendan, along with the use of creative methods in health care research, his own PhD experience and visions for the future.

This week Louise chats with Clare Davies regarding her research journey from MPhil to PhD! Clare is a Lecturer in Nursing at the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery and has over 25 years’ experience in nursing and academia. Clare's chosen field of speciality is paediatrics and child health and has held senior nursing positions in both Australia and the UK. In this episode, Clare talks about her passion for paediatric research, what made her enrol in a PhD after completing her MPhil and the importance of leaving a legacy through research.

Professor Elizabeth Denney-Wilson is a leader in her research field. She is a passionate advocate for the principles of primary health care and preventing and managing chronic disease, particularly overweight and obesity across the lifespan. In this episode, Elizabeth describes how she manages her role at the University of Sydney with the many projects she is involved in across five universities and the Local Health District. In the past year she has also taken on a role with the Sydney Vaccination Centres and was recently appointed to a World Health Organisation Guidelines Committee for the early prevention of child obesity. Professor Denney-Wilson does all this while staying connected to her community as an active member of her rowing club. She shares her insight and advice to aspiring researchers and emerging health professionals.
