About the Presenter:
Brandy Pinkerton (brandy@travelnurse101.com) –
Are you considering taking your nursing career to the next level but don’t know how to take that first step? Life is too short to be burnt out, underpaid, and stagnant. Travel nursing allows you the flexibility and freedom to pursue your passion for nursing while traveling, gaining knowledge, and having epic adventures. You get to explore with a purpose! I’m Brandy, your fellow travel nurse friend, and mentor. I have over 18 years of varied nursing experience, including neonatal and pediatric ICU, critical care float pool, flight nursing, and travel nursing. Since pursuing a career as a travel nurse, I’ve had adventures in Florida, Colorado, Nevada, South Carolina, Texas, and Montana. I’m an avid traveler, hiker, and outdoor enthusiast. Why did I decide to become a travel nurse? Well, I was burned out in my staff job and needed to renew my passion for nursing. After finding a great company and a trustworthy recruiter, I embarked on my first assignment solo with my two doggies in tow and never looked back! Becoming a travel nurse was the best decision I could have made for myself! While I’m grateful I decided to become a travel nurse, I also know that there are a lot of logistics involved in getting started. That’s why I’m here! When you feel overwhelmed, I’m here to be your travel nurse mentor – to team up with you, hold your hand, and give you the confidence you need for a successful journey. Instead of letting you learn the hard way, I’ll tell you all there is to know about travel nursing so that you can feel prepared to take the leap into this exciting, rewarding profession! I’m all about working smarter, not harder, and I’m happy to mentor my future travel nurse

Our guest today is Jeremy Commisso, the CEO & Founder of Nurse First Travel who helps to touch on the points on both sides.
Jeremy also gives some important tips for travelers when submitting to a position:
Have all your important points (ie specific days off, schedule requests etc) ready to go for the initial submission. It's much harder to add it in later. Reduce the amount of back-and-forth questions to make it easy for the managers to choose YOU for the assignment
Be organized with documents - turn in anything that might be of need during the assignment so nothing holds up the submission

Eric Katz has been a recruiter for many years with Healthtrust Workforce Solutions and shares the behind-the-scene look at what his company does for travelers. Credentialling is a major pain point for traveler nurses (and all types of healthcare travelers), and many don't realize how large a job it is to manage the ongoing issue of keeping up with current licenses for facility submittals.
Eric talks about the specific credentials and how they can be managed differently from one agency to another. He also shares how little details can make the difference in having a traveler's submission be accepted or rejected.
Eric's tip relates to traveling in HCA Healthcare managed facilities and shares the top three assets their facilities look for in a traveler. And even if you don't have those particular experiences, there are other things a traveler can do to put themselves ahead of the pack for a travel position.

Phil Light is a long-time RN traveler who saw the need for a professional association for healthcare travelers back when it was sorely needed. He created the non-profit association PanTravelers which offers legal support to all healthcare travelers through the services of an attorney on retainer.
Over the years he has helped travelers caught in difficult legal situations. Sometimes just a legal letter is enough to clear things up, but other times a much more lengthy process is called for.
Travel Nurses and Allied Therapists don't have a lot of resources at their disposal, especially if they move around to different travel companies over the years. PanTravelers is available to members (at a low cost for a lifetime membership) to be a legal resource should they find themselves in need.

Alyssa is a senior recruiter with TotalMed Staffing and has worked with many healthcare travelers over the years. She talks about how recruiters are frequently updating travelers' resumes and paperwork so it's as up to date as possible. Travelers don't always realize how much work their recruiters are doing for them behind the scenes so it nice to highlight this.
Alyssa's tip to help her travelers is to have them prioritize their preference on positions. If there are 20 open jobs for them, they will have a better chance of getting a position if they narrow them down to a just a few, so their recruiter can follow up on those positions and help get them through to the manager.
You can find Alyssa at www.TotalMed.com, and at TravCon this coming September in Las Vegas.

In this episode of Traveler Minute, Michelle talks to Dylan Callier about strategies to use when the market is bad.
Dylan is a Doctor of Physical Therapy currently on assignment in Chico, California, and the founder of the podcast New Medical Nomads.
Dylan was hiking Machu Picchu when the country was closed down at the start of Covid. He talks about the challenges he had in getting back out of the country to the USA.
Dylan’s tips this week are strategies to employ when the job market is tough. At the time of recording, they were only nine physical therapy jobs open across the country. He talks about the need to consider alternative types and locations of assignments, ones that you would normally not have considered in a normal, active market. He describes how he changes his thought process in considering assignments, and how that helps his chances at landing the next contract.
Dylan also talks about the importance of building up a small nest egg of cash in the event of longer time off between assignments. This gives a traveler more time and flexibility in finding their next assignment.
