Maria Khani: Maria Khani is a Syrian educator, lecturer, and author based in Southern California. She is a proud mother of three children—two sons and one daughter with whom she cofounded A Country Called Syria in 2012, a nonprofit traveling museum and set of art events showcasing the history and culture of their homeland.
For 15 years, Khani served as the Senior Muslim Chaplain in the Los Angeles and Orange County jails, providing educational and spiritual services to incarcerated Muslim men and women. She also works as a public speaker, lecturing on Islam and Muslims at educational, community, interfaith, and governmental institutions, as well as an educator on analytical Quran studies.
Rabbi Tamar Magill-Grimm: Rabbi Tamar Magill-Grimm brings a love for ongoing, serious, deep Jewish learning and spiritual growth to her role as Senior Rabbi at Beth Jacob Congregation. Over the course of the last 10 years, she has served in various roles at Beth Jacob, including Rabbi-Educator and Assistant Rabbi. Prior to working at Beth Jacob, she was the rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel in Rock Island, IL. Rabbi Tamar received her Rabbinic Ordination and Masters in Jewish Studies from Hebrew College Rabbinical School in Boston and graduated from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Anthropology and Sociology, and a certificate in Women’s Studies. She lives in St. Paul, MN, with her spouse and two daughters. Together they enjoy cross-country skiing, watching women’s basketball and eating pizza. beth-jacob.org
Rachel Pieh Jones: Rachel Pieh Jones has written about life at the crossroads of faith and culture for the New York Times, Runners World, and more. Her work is influenced by living in the Horn of Africa, raising Third Culture Kids, and adventurous exploration of the natural world. Originally from Minnesota, she lived in Somaliland and Djibouti for over twenty years. She holds two Masters degrees, is a current PhD student in Intercultural Studies, and works as a ghostwriter and developmental editor. Rachel is the award-winning author of six books including Pillars: How Muslim Friends Led Me Closer to Jesus." www.rachelpiehjones.com

Mariam Mohamed: Mariam Mohamed came to the USA in 1984 from Somalia for post-graduate studies in hydrology. She also holds Master's degrees; in Plant Science and in Sampling and Multivariate Analysis. She worked as a Research Analyst in Molecular Biology at Harvard University, then moved to Minnesota in 2000, where she became a Program Director for Workforce Development, Inc. She is particularly proud of her work as Executive Director of the Somali Parent Teacher Association (SPTA), successfully transitioning a concept to a vibrant community organization dedicated to the service of refugees and student immigrants. For the next five years, Mariam dedicated herself to improving conditions for Minnesota families and children in her role as Program Officer of the Children & Families Program at The McKnight Foundation.
Since 2010, Mariam has worked as an independent consultant and program facilitator for clients such as the Minnesota Department of Human Services, St. David’s Center for Child & Family Development, the Governor’s Early Learning Council and UCare. At UCare, she has led various initiatives including Circles of Health to educate and empower women – mostly in the Somali community – to lead healthier lifestyles, heal from historical trauma, support their children’s success and make informed health decisions. She formerly served on the boards of Think Small, Prepare & Prosper, CAPI and World without Genocide.
Mariam is currently on the board of UCare and St.David.
Mariam also is an entrepreneur and she is the co-founder of Hoyo Sambusa, a social benefit company that provides jobs for refugee and immigrant communities in Minnesota.

Notes from Episode 1...
Inerrant: : free from error. Biblical inerrancy is the belief that the Bible, in its original manuscripts, is completely free from error in all that it affirms. This includes not only theological and moral teachings, but also historical and scientific claims. The idea of biblical inerrancy, meaning the Bible is without error, gained prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the United States, as a response to modern biblical scholarship and criticism. The most well-known articulation of this doctrine is the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, which was drafted in 1978. Biblical inerrancy is not synonymous with biblical literalism, and Christians often focus more on what is intended to be written by a biblical author than the veracity of what is actually written.
- Baptist, Pentecostal, Evangelical, and Fundamentalist churches tend to hold to a doctrine of inerrancy.
- The Wesleyan and Methodist Christian tradition affirms that the Bible is authoritative on matters concerning faith and practice but does not use the word "inerrant" to describe the Bible. What is of central importance for the Wesleyan Christian tradition is the Bible as a tool which God uses to promote salvation.
- The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada do not officially hold to biblical inerrancy. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, the Lutheran Church—Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod, and many other smaller Lutheran bodies do hold to scriptural inerrancy, though for the most part Lutherans do not consider themselves to be "fundamentalists."
Infallible: 1: incapable of error : unerring 2: not liable to mislead, deceive, or disappoint : certain 3: incapable of error in defining doctrines touching faith or morals. Some authors use "inerrancy" and "infallibility" interchangeably. For others, "inerrancy" refers to complete inerrancy and "infallibility" to the more limited view that the Bible is without error in conveying God's self-revelation to humanity. On this understanding, "infallibility" claims less than "inerrancy".

If one put together a list of the most influential women of the Hebrew Scriptures, Rahab's name would appear towards the top. She's in the genealogy of Jesus. She had a provocative occupation that catches people's attention. And her story comes at a pivotal time in the history of Israel, as they are in the process of leaving the wilderness and moving into the Promised Land.
But do we really know her story? Do we slow down and really listen to what she has to say? Is it possible that because we 'know' her story, we've actually missed her story? Could Rahab have been an alternative wisdom if those in the story had really listened?

Shalom - It's one of those words we hear often and we think we know. But there are so many different ways it's been used. 'Peace' 'Restitution' 'Rebuild' From Deuteronomy to Numbers to Joel to Nehemiah.
What if shalom isn't something we give...but it's something we seek?
What does it look like for 'peace' to be a verb and a noun?

While eating with his new disciple, Matthew, and a group of Matthew's friends, Jesus gets confronted by some Pharisee's who don't like his choice of dinner companion.

Colossians 1 has this beautiful hymn that reminds us of Proverbs 8. How might this impact how we read Paul?!
Season 6 | Proverbs 8 | Wisdom: She Is Speaking
Starting in verse 22, we hear a passage that may resonate with something we've heard before. These verses give shape for how many have grounded their theology and understanding of presence during the act of creation; most famously the apostle Paul.
But wisdom, she is speaking in this passage.
What does it mean that wisdom is personified?
What does it mean that wisdom clearly has feminine pronouns?
What does it mean that wisdom, alongside God, delights in humanity?
How can this posture and invitation impact us today?

In John 21, the disciples - led by Simon Peter - are going fishing. Why? They've just witnessed the death and resurrection of Jesus, he's appeared to them at least two different times, and they decide to go fishing.
It's easy in these moments to judge the disciples behavior. Maybe we would like to think we would have done something more purposeful or spiritually minded. But do we really know how potentially confusing and challenging these days after Jesus returns would be?
And so we find the disciples fishing, and Jesus offers to make them some food. What could this moment be about?

How does Moses become MOSES? In Exodus chapter 2, we see Moses - son of Israelite slaves, raised in Pharaoh's palace - walk out the gate and see the burden of slavery on his people. And he reacts. This moment starts a chain reaction that launches Moses into the wilderness, to the land of Midian. And it's in Midian that God will prepare him to lead the people.
What does it mean to see? How do we wake up to the world around us that is unjust?
What does it mean to leave all that we've known? How do we trust that God will continue to use us if we leave the familiar?

Some stories are just so odd that it's just easier to ignore them and move on...why try to make sense of something or try to understand a spiritual truth about something that can't possibly be real?!
In Numbers 22, the people of Israel are on the verge of entering the Promised Land after 40 years in the wilderness. A neighboring king gets nervous as they approach so he hires a guy named Balaam, who is able to see visions and give prophecies, to go scare Israel away. God tells Balaam not to go, but he eventually goes anyway. On the way, the path gets narrower and narrower...and the donkey sees the angel of the Lord. The donkey avoids the angel, but Balaam (who can't see the angel) strikes the donkey on three separate occasions. At this point the Lord speaks to Balaam through the donkey!
Are we listening for what God has for us? Are we heading down a path that God might have warned us about, but we just don't seem to be getting the message? Are there donkeys in our lives that are trying to point us in the right direction?
This is a passage about discernment!
Also...We put the 'explicit' designation on this podcast because we use the term 'ass' to refer to the donkey. This was done based on the translation we used. We didn't want to get into trouble...hence the label. We also wanted to catch your attention in case you listen to this in the presence of younger ears and aren't ready to explain how a donkey had a different name back in the day...or why Lisa seems to have a potty mouth!

Jeremiah is called to be a prophet. But he's called to be a prophet of doom and gloom in the midst of one of the greatest reclamation moments of Israel's fraught history. The timing seems off. But what if the timing isn't off, what if Jeremiah is preparing the people for the unthinkable - exile. And in preparing them for exile, he's showing them that God is present, that God is still with them.
This conversation struck a few chords with how some may be perceiving of the church in America today (or at least some iterations of the church). And like Jeremiah, though the outlook may seem bleak, the fact that we are engaging these questions points to the hope we have for a re-imagination.
In this episode we spend time in Jeremiah 1 and Numbers 16 and 17 (but there's some confusion about which verses we read in Numbers 17...you'll see why).

I'll be honest. As we get Season 2 off to a start, this first episode took a minute to find it's footing. But all the groundwork that was laid in the beginning made for a wonderful reflection and meditation on what seemed to be a simplistic poem.
