The talk describes an alternative to adjoint methods, used to relate flow quantities of interest to the parameters of the problem, based on time periodic solutions of the flow equations.

The talk describes work studying the effect of a step change in the wind on the flow and stratification of a enclosed volume with high and low openings and an internal source of buoyancy. It finds stratified interiors are effective in buffering temporal variations in the wind.

The talk describes experimental work investigating the effect of turbulence on the sedimentation of disks, and shows that it modifies significantly the settling dynamics of the disks in a number of different ways.
