As you already know I like to accomodate in this hotel dominating the valley at the entrance of the Aizkorri-Aratz nature park in Basque Country not only because of the beautiful views but also because they provide good and friendly service at affordable prices .

They have a restaurant inside the hotel and also a small tavern in the outsides; the buffet-type breakfast here is €6/day.

  • Relaxing cup of coffee latte after filling my stomach with toast and cereals.

How about waking up and seeing this wonderful mist covering the entire valley from your balcony? This hotel is dominating a valley located at the entrance of the Aizkorri-Aratz natural park and since I discovered it I have already stayed here twice because I love the views, breathe the pure and fresh air, the tranquility of the place and the proximity of immense forests that I will show you in future posts.

This is recorded in the middle of summer and, while in the city where I was born it was 36ºC, here we did not exceed 15ºC and we had fresh drizzle almost every day. I had to sleep with a duvet in the middle of summer! Amazing.

The beds I slept in during my stay.

Later in the morning the fog clears and you can better appreciate the depth of the beautiful valley.

Views from my bedroom window.

Time to have a cold beer at noon appreciating the clear valley.

As you can see, part from having a decent meal at a good price, this is a fun place to come for dinner or lunch while enjoying the show. The best dish for me on this menu is, undoubtedly, the flambéed beef sirloin, which they prepare tender, juicy and full of flavor.

  • Thin slice of veal fillet rolled and stuffed with a mince of garlic and parsley.

  • Red wine Marqués de Riscal Reserve 2015 from Rioja (€22).

  • Raw veal sirloin waiting for being flambéed.

  • Chef flaming sirloin.

  • I ordered it medium rare.

  • Meat already plated and cooked.

  • After making some thin pancakes, they pour Cointreau (orange liqueur) into a jar.

  • Then they fill pancakes with cream ice cream.

  • So chef sets fire to the Cointreau liqueur and throw it on the pancakes with the lights off.

  • The dessert ready to eat once the rest of the fire is turned off.

Overall evaluation of the restaurant: 6 points out of 10.

This is a Japanese cuisine restaurant with 8 courses Japanese griddle menu at €24 price (they have 4 more menu options, being the most expensive at €78, including lobster), drinks not included. Currently they have ⭐4.1 rating in Google Maps and my personal rating was ⭐4.

The best thing about this restaurant for me is eating at the griddle table with the Japanese chef cooking everything at the moment and doing a show, with quality beef sirloin flambé as the star dish (will be shown in the 2nd part of this series). Besides, they have other gastronomic offers in another part of the premises, such as a buffet menu or a sushi menu.

  • Miso soup.

  • Chef preparing some starters for different menus.

  • Pork loin with soy.

  • Yakitori chicken.

  • Chef elaborating rice three delights version.

  • Part of the show with three delights rice version: the chef plays with the diners by throwing pieces of omelet in their mouths and, as you will see in the video, he hits me right the first time.

  • Final result of the rice three delights version.

Overall evaluation of the restaurant: 6 points out of 10.

Carlos always says to me that stretching is very important and he's absolutely right. Many injuries could be avoided by warming up well before exercising and stretching well afterwards, in addition to the fact that stretching provides more benefits such as, for example, greater development of muscle mass, avoiding the dreaded muscle aches and greater muscle recovery.

I had an iliotibial band syndrome injury years ago that left me unable to train for a whole year and you can't imagine how I recovered..., right: doing stretching along with strengthening exercises of the affected part.

Hip rotation and iliotibial band stretch.

Feet crunch, ankles rotation and loosening muscles.

Turn up the volume to hear loud the neck crunch!

The neck crunch is one of my favorites and is the one that relieves me the most, but for people who are not used to it, it can be a bit unpleasant. It is very important that you leave your neck fully relaxed so that the chiropractor can do the crunching and readjustment well. If you tense your neck it can be dangerous when it is going to be readjusted.

After the readjustment, he makes you a very pleasant stretch with a towel. In this case, he is suspending your neck and at the same time pulling your neck back.

Here he also leaves your neck in suspension and at the same time rotates it to one side and the other.

Here he now stretches your neck but towards your body, using the force of his body for it. It may seem annoying but it is also very liberating.

I had been suffering from back muscle pain for several days, as well as a cervical contracture and a sciatic nerve impingement, so I decided to call my regular physiotherapist and chiropractor to try to fix my body a bit.

His name is Carlos and has been a sports physiotherapist at a soccer club for many years although now he has his own clinic. He comes to your home for a very competitive price.

Okay, I think he wants to make me suffer now....

Here he's crunching my spine. He tells you to breathe in deeply and release the air little by little and, while you're releasing it, he takes the opportunity to put pressure on your bones and readjust them.

Read all the details I wrote about this restaurant and know about more dishes in the Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 of this series.

Fun fact: For some the word carbonara comes from carbone, which in Italian is the name for coal, and it's believed that the name of the dish has its origin in the typical dish of charcoal makers in the Apennines (called carbonari in Italian ).

Macaroni carbonara: The pasta was made made by hand, one by one, of Iberian ham broth jelly, having a very powerful ham flavor and at the same time being very soft texture, almost without having to chew it. It had cheese and bacon cubes on top and then the waiter would add a special thick cream that was also very tasty, he would grate Parmesan and bring the pepper shaker to you so you can add pepper to taste.

Adding the special thick cream.

The head waiter came to my table to explain me the next dish and how they will pair it.

Idiazábal cheese millefeuille: In this case, the pastry layers are made of fried and dehydrated cheese, a process that is repeated for at least three times to obtain a thin and crunchy dough with a powerful cheese flavor; the cream filling, in this case, is a smoked Basque cheese mousse called Idiazábal cheese, which is typical to eat with walnuts and quince.

After another waiter served me that dish, the head waiter telles me that the pairing of this dish is the cider that they had pressurized for 15 minutes and that he's going to smoke at the moment for me, as you can see in the video.

My friend having some trouble with the snorkel.

She does not usually dive or snorkel so, quite often, she had some problems with her goggles or tube and was overwhelmed to the point of having to stop snorkeling, at which point I took the opportunity to give her some advice in the video:

  • Before putting on your diving goggles, spit on the glasses, rub the saliva with your fingers across the glass and then rinse them; this will prevent them from fogging up often.
  • Once you put them on your head, adjust the straps well and take a deep breath with your nose; if the diving goggles make emptiness and stick more towards your face when you inspired, it is that they are well placed.
  • From time to time, if you notice discomfort in the area inside your diving goggles, blow through your nose and decompress the space between your face and the goggles a bit.
  • If water enters your tube, do not panic, keep calm and with the air in your lungs blow hard and the water will be expelled in a jet.
  • If you swallow a little sea water, nothing happens, do not get nervous or overwhelmed; it is normal and it happens to all of us.

Feeling like fish in the water.

Telling my friend that I have seen something.

It was a sargo or white seabream (Diplodus sargus sargus) from Sparidae family; its meat is highly appreciated and tasty.

Peering the seabed.

It's the first time I see so many mullets together but in this cove's seabed, wherever you dive, there they were.

School of mullets, some of them just relaxing and others feeding.

I'm not really sure of wich species of mullet they were but what is pretty sure is that they were Mullus from the Mullidae family, belonging to mud mullets kind and not to those of rock mullets.

They have small appendices in the form of a mustaches that are smell and touch sensory organs and with those they remove the seabed in search of their food: small worms and molluscs.

Some of them made pretty large holes and other specimens of fish came to take advantage of the holes they did.

As you know this species of fish is edible for humans and quite appreciated in the fish market.

I am used to diving to certain depths with full scuba gear and seeing animals like moray eels, congers or large groupers but this time I got scared and I I felt like a small fish in an immense sea, because I was snorkeling alone and when I glimpsed what I saw I realized how vulnerable we're in the immense sea.

There was very little visibility in the sea that day (it was very cloudy) which did not make it easy at all to fel safer, since from about four meters around you could not see any thing that could come to. you

If you watch the video at that moment that I indicate in the image you will see that something is glimpsed that disappears in seconds; believe me it was quite large (at least 2 meters long) since what was glimpsed only represented half of the body of the animal towards the tail.

If you keep watching the video from there you will see that after a few seconds, I begin to assimilate what I have seen and I start to get scared, suddenly moving the camera from one side to the other, swimming back a little and turning the camera back to the place where I saw the fish.

The animal is no longer where it was and I was a bit disoriented although I try to remain calm at all times and convince myself that nothing is going to happen and that despite the poor visibility nothing is going to come for me.

Despite the poor visibility conditions and how fast the fish moved away, I have my hypotheses of what type of fish it could be:

  • It could have been a barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda, wich are also common in the Mediterranean Sea and grow to 2 meters length.
  • It could have been a common dentex (Dentex dentex), wich can gro to 1.5 meters length.

I am inclined to think that it was a barracuda, since it was large and it moved away very fast and these fish are very fast, although it does not convince me that it was near a wall feeding on mollusks (which a common dentex could have been doing), since they hunt other fish.

As you know, I like to go snorkeling from time to time in a hidden cove, located in the Mediterranean Sea and only about ten minutes by car from my house.

Peering the seabed in search of the best route to follow.

Sometimes and in some areas of the sea, the visibility is not very good and the water is cloudy due to the swell and waves. Still, I try to make the quality of my images and videos the best possible under the circumstances.

An adult specimen of salema porgy (scientific name Sarpa Salpa), also commonly known as dreamfish or goldline. They belong to the Sparidae family and it's a species from which to know many curious facts:

  • It is a totally hermaphroditic species.
  • The young specimens are carnivores but the adults are herbivores.
  • It's the only marine species capable of feeding on a highly toxic algae called killer algae or Caulerpa taxifolia.
  • Its meat is not recommended for consumption due to the probability of being contaminated with this killer algae toxin, but even if the specimen had not eaten algae, its meat is insipid and worthless in the fish market.
  • They can change the color of their body and that of their stripes according to their emotional state.

Target set and located!

Sometimes you find unexpected and pleasant visits, like this octopus.

These rock formations are located within the natural park of a mountain range and to reach them you have to add an accumulated difference of 750 meters of altitude in a circular route of 14 kilometers.

It took us about 6 hours to do the full route, with a 30 minutes stop to have lunch and refresh ourselves. For lunch, one of the couples prepared homemade pork rinds the night before and I bought some ratatouille dumplings freshly made in a traditional oven.

This hiking route is more complete than it may seem, since during the way you pass through several historical places of the Spanish Civil War (trenches and defensive posts), you cross a river and have wonderful views of the swamp from a viewpoint, in addition to some via ferratas in some sections, although we did not climb.

We recommend this type of route to anyone as it is a beautiful way to stay active and enjoy the mountains and nature but always remember to maintain minimum personal safety measures.

A local recommended me to go for breakfast to a place on the promenade where they have 8 different types of breakfast menu and you enjoy these views while eating something.

I ordered the Tonic Breakfast, the healthier menu of the rest of the options.

Tonic Breakfast: coffee, squeezed orange juice, toast with butter and strawberry jam and Natural yogurt with muesli and assorted fresh fruit (€6.95).

After having breakfast I enjoyed such beautiful views walking peacefully along the promenade.

Booked this hotel because it's placed in the middle of nature, with good views of both the mountains and the coast; also it was quite comfortable and cheap, so it was perfect for me.
