In this episode, Martin explores a listener's thoughtful question: "How do you approach the topic of continuing care for someone who's returned after dropping out? I don’t want to come across as 'I told you so' or overly pushy. Sometimes it feels simpler to avoid the conversation altogether. Is there a more effective way?" Join Martin as he delves into the nuances of this delicate situation, offering insightful and empathetic strategies to foster meaningful connections and positive outcomes.

To get great results it's important that people follow their care plans. We focus a lot on communication approaches that help people see the value of rebooking to support their progress. But what if what your CA says doesn't support what you say? Or worse, what if it actually sabotages what you have said!

In this episode, Martin breaks down the best ways for the CA to finish the visit to support people rebooking (and what they should never say).

One of the great things about chiropractic is that you can often create phenomenal change in an instant. There can be a challenge where people feel or even say "is that it?" when they get up from the table! As humans, we often see the amount of time someone takes with us as a proxy for value.

In this episode, Martin breaks down how to avoid these shituations as much as possible as well as how to deal with them when they do crop up!

We often talk about the value of playing the long game. That when you prioritise long-term over short-term goals it helps you avoid 'bright shiny objects' and do things more in line with your values.

So what about infinite games? Simon Sinek has written about the value of playing an infinite game, so how does it apply to us in chiropractic?

In this episode, Dr Ash Pritchard joins Martin to explain how he sees his involvement in chiropractic as an infinite game.

Do you hate it when someone talks over you? It feels crappy, doesn't it?

In this episode, we explore this common yet seldom discussed challenge.
Martin guides us through understanding why this happens and how to subtly (or not so subtly) shift the dynamic.
The focus is on pattern interrupts and the 'yes,...and' strategy β€” tools not just for chiropractors aiming to refine their interactions with clients, but for anyone looking to navigate conversations with more grace and effectiveness.
This isn't about dominating discussions but about fostering a space where everyone is heard.

Objectively measuring the progress your clients make is a key to creating a high retention practice. But what if the measurements don't improve (or get worse) by the time of the re-exam? It's a shituation that can have the client deeply dissatisfied and you feeling uncertain about how to discuss it and what to recommend next.

In today's episode Martin maps out a framework that takes into account the technical and communication aspects of this shituation to give you an approach that will leave you feeling much more certain with your care plans and re-exams.

The bottom line is that the best way you can help people is to have them receive the benefits of care. Crafting your approach to communication is critical so that people both see that you care and see that they are likely to benefit. You have to have both the emotional and logical bases covered.

In this episode, Martin breaks down an approach that will help you connect and communicate individual value so that more people experience the benefits of care in your practice.

In the chiropractic world, there's this belief that the key to keeping patients is all about nailing down slick scripts and selling them on the wonders of chiropractic care. It's a never-ending hustle of always closing deals, roping back in those who've left, and scouting for fresh clients. But, here's a thought: maybe there's a smarter way to do this.

People stick around for two reasons: they feel a real connection with you because they know you genuinely care, and they see that chiropractic care helps them do stuff that's important to them. It's not about how well you can recite lines; it's about the bonds you build and the value you bring to their lives.

Your skills in creating these connections and showing the real worth of what you do are what really drive patient retention. Your current Patient Visit Average (PVA) isn't just a number; it's a reflection of how good you are at keeping patients around.

In today's episode, we're cutting through the noise to focus on what really matters. I'll break down the exact skills you need to amp up your retention game, based on where you're at right now. It's about moving away from the old playbook and towards a more authentic, effective way of running your practice.

Let's cut the crap. Today, Martin is going to tell you about the four ways you're screwing up patient retention without even realizing it. In the chiropractic world, there's this bullsh*t belief that if you just nail the perfect spiel in your report and become a ninja at dodging objections, patients will magically stick around. Wrong.

This episode is about tearing down that illusion. It's not about mastering some fancy script or playing verbal judo with patients. That kind of approach? It's a one-way ticket to a never-ending loop of convincing, losing, and desperately trying to win back patients. You end up stuck in this cycle of throwing money at Facebook ads, gimmicky discounts, and whatever else, hoping something sticks. Spoiler alert: It doesn't work.

Martin's here to wake you up. He's going to lay out the real reasons patients are walking out the door and what you can actually do about it. Forget the usual BS. It's time for a reality check on building genuine, bullshit-free relationships with your patients. So, buckle up and get ready for some hard truths that could turn your practice around.

In this episode, our host, Martin, dives into the world of cognitive biases that shape the beliefs of both health professionals and those seeking chiropractic care. As university-educated health professionals, we often pride ourselves on thinking 'correctly,' but the influence literature tells a different story – our thinking is inherently biased.

Martin explores a groundbreaking new paper that unveils the six key biases influencing our perceptions. Why is this crucial? Because if you aspire to broaden the reach and impact of chiropractic care, understanding and navigating these biases is paramount. The key lies in communicating effectively, aligning with the biases of both your patients and yourself.

Join Martin as he unravels the mysteries behind these biases and demonstrates how this newfound awareness can revolutionize the way we communicate the profound value of chiropractic. It's not just about delivering information; it's about connecting with individuals on a level that resonates with their unique cognitive framework.

People do what they do because they believe what they believe. The most common belief that causes people to stop having care is that 'you see a chiropractor when you have pain'. When people come back in the return of their symptoms is an opportunity to help them see the value of a different belief system. But for them to be able to see it you have to ask the right questions.

In this episode Martin maps out the three best questions to use with reactivations and exactly how to use them in your practice.

Retention is based on 2 things:

When people have long-term problems you need a more advanced skill set to be able to present chiropractic in a way that they are likely to follow through with care. You see when people have long-term problems it has more of an emotional impact that can make it harder for them to see the value of your care.

The bottom line is that science is THE currency of influence. Anti-chiropractic zealots try to position chiropractic as "unscientific" because they know that it will put people off using chiropractic. Using science in your communication can help give you and your message more credibility and authority and this means more people are likely to start and continue care with you.
It's easy to get it wrong though. If you get too 'sciencey' then you will just get glazed eyes and bored people. If you get too simple or emphatic then you can actually lose credibility!
In this episode, I go through the do's and don'ts of communicating using science and research and use an example of a paper from Nature's Scientific Reports "Detection of cognitive decline by spinal posture assessment in health exams of the general older population"

Communicating chiropractic can be hard. The big idea of chiropractic is simple - that chiropractic can help your body work better so that you can do ALL the things you have to do and love to do. But connecting people with it is more difficult. It's more difficult because this idea is different from the predominant ideas in our culture. And it's difficult because we have the curse of knowledge where it's hard for us to imagine what it's actually like to not know that!

This is where metaphors, similes, and schemas come in. They are all ways of linking concepts that people already understand to chiropractic.

In this episode, Martin goes through his favourite links to the bid idea of chiropractic!

If you don't have a great examination it's tough to know if someone who isn't getting symptomatic results just needs more care or they need a different approach. It's tough to know when to change someone's frequency of care. It's tough to really practice in a model that is about function, not pain.

When you do the right tests (and do them right!) it helps the client get the best care, helps your clinical certainty, AND, can help communicate the value of prevention and performance.

In this episode, Martin explores all these areas and gives you templates that you can use to upgrade your exam.

Have you ever looked at your schedule and seen that "that" person is coming in? You know the one who is always complaining, doesn't value what you want, and is a pain in the arse to deal with?
And conversely, are there people who are a joy to see? They 'get it' and value you and the care you provide.
Would you like to have more of the latter and less of the former? Would you like to learn a simple tweak to your language which will filter the 'right' people in (and the 'wrong' people out)?
On this episode of the podcast, I go over a simple tweak in your language (changing actions to identities) that will act as a beacon to the people you want to see. And even better, using this tweak will increase the chance that your ideal clients (the 'right' people) will follow your recommendations.

Authority is such an important aspect of success that Cialdini included it in his 6 principles of influence. When the people in your community are deciding who to see they are looking for someone that they can trust. When people are deciding whether they should follow your recommendations they are asking themselves if they trust you. When they are deciding whether to refer someone to you, again trust is the determinant.

And quite simply, authority is the fast track to trust.

Dr Scott Vatcher is an expert on how you can build authority and shares his approaches in this episode.

It can be tricky when you're trying to explain the value of prevention and performance-based care to people who are pain based in their beliefs. If you make them wrong then they're not likely to want to listen to you, but if you don't explain the value of more proactive options it sucks for them (they get worse results) and it sucks for you (you end up with a practice full of pain based people!)

Today I go through how to use bridging as a communication approach for people who you have already seen but haven't explained prevention or performance to. How you can 'renegotiate the agreement' to one that serves them and you.

Have you ever been explaining chiropractic to someone and it just clicks with them?
And then used the same words and approach to someone else and it falls flat?

Effective communication is all about the message that THEY receive.
If you want chiropractic to matter to more people, you need to adapt your communication to them.

In this episode, I show you how to use Daniel Kahnemman's idea of 2 systems of thinking (Zoe Chance calls them the Gator brain and the Judge Brain) to make your message matter more.

Do you find it frustrating that there are people who could clearly benefit from your care who don't come in?

Whether it's people who start care and don't continue, people who you meet who have problems you know you could help with who don't come in for care, or people who choose to get care but don't bring their kids in, it can be infuriating!

I have been using a simple framework (emotion, logic, and urgency) to understand why people who do have care do what they do. It also explains what may be missing when they don't.

When you create a practice designed for high retention a bunch of things happen. People stay longer so they get better clinical results. Your practice grows without you being too reliant on new people. It's a more fun and less stressful way to practice.

2023 looks like it could be a turbulent year. The recession, the Ukraine situation, and all the other reasons for uncertainty can have an impact on your practice. In uncertain times people are less likely to take on new commitments and expenses. The better your retention the more likely you are to sail through these turbulent times.

On this episode, Vismai Schonfelder joins me and we talk all about the keys to building your retention and the upcoming "Grow Your Tribe" workshop we will be teaching together.

If you're like me you probably have a whole lot of projects that you have started but have stalled. You've spent time and energy on them but nothing has happened. There's no return on the investment you have made.

Dr Mike Charlton is a master of implementation. Of getting stuff from idea to 'done".Β

In this episode, Mike joins me and we talk about how he thinks about implementation and his chiropractic journey.

Implementation is the key to success. It's the action that turns ideas into reality, and it's what separates those who succeed from those who don't. Many people have great ideas, but it's the ones who take action and put in the hard work to see those ideas through to fruition that truly succeed.

The old saying goes, "success is 99% implementation and 1% inspiration." This means that while inspiration and ideas are important, it's the execution of those ideas that really matters. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new idea and to think about all the potential success that it could bring, but if you don't actually take the steps to make it happen, it will never come to fruition.

Yeah, I get it. "The 3 secrets of..." is one of the most overused headlines/ subject lines. We are supposed to be attracted to the mystery of the "secret" and be compelled to investigate further.

I didn't want to use it but there are a few mysteries when it comes to chiropractic success.

Why are some chiropractors wildly successful and others seem to be always struggling?

Why can one chiropractor go to a seminar and it's a pivot point that sets them on a path to helping way more people and another goes to the same seminar and nothing changes?

There are a lot of opinions about success. Which should you listen to? I believe that the best answers are based less on someone's opinion and more on science.

In today's episode, I map out the three keys of successful chiropractors based on the research of Carol Dweck and Angela Duckworth.

A core idea in chiropractic is that how healthy you are is based on how you FUNCTION, not on how you FEEL.

Connected to this is the practice of giving people a care plan. The idea is that the best results happen when we base choices of frequency of care on how you have assessed their function.

So how should you handle it if someone stops sticking to their care plan?

"Influence. The Psychology of Persuasion" by Robert Cialdini is arguably the 'bible' of the influence literature. It lays out the core ideas on why people do what they do and what we can do to ethically influence them to make better decisions.

It's the book that set me on the path of improving my communication. To celebrate the 50th episode of "Under The Influence" I have reviewed Cialdini's 6 principles of influence and how you, as a chiropractor, can apply them.

Most of the people you take care of are stressed. Most of them are chronically stressed. It's having a profoundly negative impact on their health and happiness. And you, as a chiropractor, can help them in a way that no other healthcare practitioner can.

In this episode, Martin is joined by Dr. Wayne Todd. Wayne has been in practice for over 35 years. Throughout his career, he has been striving to help his patients as much as possible. Wayne has a relentless curiosity and a practical mind that have enabled him to create a cohesive approach to helping people recover, improve and maintain their health – the SD protocol.

Whether you like it or loathe it, videos of chiropractic adjustments get lots of views on social media.

On YouTube, there are multiple chiropractors with over a million subscribers! There is even 1 with over 2 million subscribers.

Then there are the accounts on Instagram and TikTok with massive followings.

All this means that it's an increasingly common experience to have someone come in for their first visit and say something like "I want to get cracked like I saw on Instagram"or "I want the y-strap adjustment like I saw on YouTube".

It's a challenging situation because they are often coming in with expectations that are VERY different to the way most of us practice.

In this episode, Martin breaks down exactly how to handle this shituation, including the exact questions to ask.

Dr. Andrew Cameron with his partner Mark Pearce has built N8 Health group to 7 practices spread over 3 states in Australia. He is a contrarian about what it takes to build a practice. He's big on role-playing and giving and receiving tough feedback as necessary practices to build a great practice. He's not big on paid marketing.

Camo has generously offered free access to two training programs. One is all about this authentic practice model, the second is about gentle care for older people. https://www.purefocus.online/ljyjudmn

At a certain point contacting people who have missed or cancelled appointments stops being supportive and starts to feel like stalking!

Recalls CAN be a great way to keep people on track with their care (and keep your appointment book full). Done wrong they could be actually stopping people from coming back to see you!

People's expectations in 2022 are VERY different from 10, 5, or even 2 years ago. It used to be that a phone call was a personal way of connecting with people. Now, many people see it as intrusive (85% of people prefer to communicate with businesses via text!).

In this episode, Martin breaks down the dos and don'ts of recalls.

Most chiropractic communication approaches are front-loaded – they focus only on what to do in the first few visits. Maybe you have a workshop to explain the 'big picture' of chiropractic, but there is no (or little) focus on what to do on adjustment visits to drip feed the key concepts. It sets you up for failure if your vision for your practice is lifetime care but you expect people to remember the concepts you explained to them months, years, or decades earlier.

A key part of creating a wellness or performance culture is to create a system for communicating it EVERY visit. A core component of the approach that Martin teaches in the "Daily Interactions" workshop is using closing statements. In this episode, Martin explains what they are, how to use them and what closing statements to not use!

Most chiropractors focus WAY too much on new patients/ clients/ practice members! Their procedures focus on what to do on a first and second visit, new clients are treated like visiting royalty, and they tell themselves that what they 'need" to grow their practice is to get MORE new people! It often creates a trap for them where they always 'need' new people!

The alternative is to focus on long-term relationships. Part of this is to put as much focus and effort on reactivations. How can you make a remarkable experience for people who drop out of care and then come back?

In today's episode, Martin explains WHY reactivations are better than new people and WHAT you need to do to create a phenomenal experience for them!

Many chiropractors have working mothers as a big part of their practice. They are often juggling LOTS of things (kids, partner, extended family, work, friends etc.), and their health often suffers. A common challenge I hear chiropractors experiencing is that they find it hard when people come in and want to go into excruciating detail about their pain. On one hand, you want to make sure they are heard, on the other hand, it can make you run late and indicates that they haven't connected with the 'big picture' about chiropractic.

In this episode, Martin breaks down the do's (and don'ts!!!) of handling this shituation efficiently AND effectively!

When you are communicating the value of chiropractic it's critical that you keep in mind the principle that emotion trumps logic!

In this episode, Martin maps out how you can meet people's emotional needs BEFORE you meet their logical needs. He outlines Kahnemann's Type 1 vs Type 2 thinking (thinking fast and slow) and applies it to Cialdini's 3 steps to influence.

The end result is you will know how to communicate with more emotional impact AND avoid creating communication Shituations!

How would it be if all the new patients you have seen over the last year were still coming to see you? Imagine how much better they would be doing with their health AND how much busier your practice would be! Now I'm not saying there is something that you can do that will guarantee 100% retention. I am saying that focusing on retention is what most chiropractors would be best to do to grow their practice.

Would you like to get more referrals?

If you're like most chiropractors you would LOVE to have a practice that gets lots of referrals. People who are referred to you typically 'get it', they're easier to work with, and having lots of referrals makes it way easier to sustain and grow your practice.

In today's episode, I will map out why people refer (and why they don't), why the number of referrals you get is a great metric, and break down the formula for referrals.

The bottom line is your practice is a business. Yes, you are there to help people, but if it doesn't work as a business you can't help anyone. The challenge for many of us is that we have to wear so many hats; doctor, HR manager, leader, etc that the role of CEO of the business is often neglected. This means that, as a business, your practice is never as great as it can be.

Dr. Billy Chow has a unique perspective. He's a chiropractor AND has an MBA. He's owned and run multiple practices and also worked on and in healthcare businesses outside of chiropractic. This means he knows and lives chiropractic but can also see the blind spots that many of us have. In this episode, he shares powerful ideas that will help you take your business to the next level.

The moment of truth is that moment when you present your recommendations. It's the moment they either say yes or no. It's a challenging moment because you, as a chiropractor, have different beliefs, values, and priorities.Β

Communicate well and it sets up a long-term win-win relationship.

Communicate poorly and it can create negative PR, low follow-through, and dissatisfied patients/ clients.

In this episode, we will go through exactly how to get the moment of truth right!

Would you like to have a practice full of people who love what you do and you love seeing? Dr Alison Asher has created exactly this type of practice. It's a boutique practice. You can only start care if you have been recommended by another practice member. And she doesn't have a CA. It allows her the flexibility to do all the other things she does (coaches, reads, has an amazing family, and runs "Chicks Who Click" with her friend Sam).

Whether you are an associate, have associates, or will in the future there is a simple 3 part framework that will allow you to have things set up to thrive.

You see the reason that associateships don't work is almost always that they are not set up to be win-win.

In this episode, I apply the ideas from Daniel Pink's

book "Drive – The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us" to show you how to set up associate relationships to thrive.

If you want the short version of the book check out this Video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc

It's an animated summary of the ideas in the book.

What if you could tell the 'big idea' in a way that went viral?

That's one of the many questions that Dr Angus Pyke and I address in this episode.

Angus is a great chiropractor, a genius at marketing, and an all-around phenomenal human. He is one of my closest friends and one of the people that I love learning from. We are part of a book club where we read a book a month then get together to talk about what our takeaways are. This month's book is "Made to Stick" by Dan and Chip Heath. It's about "why some ideas stick around and others die." Sounds useful, hey? This month we thought it may be useful for you to hear our thoughts on the book and how to apply the ideas to your practice.Β

A true patient-centred model of care is one where the most important consideration is the patient's needs. In chiropractic, this means giving people choices in how they participate in chiropractic. Retention then (how long people stay with you) is arguably the best measure of how well you meet their needs when they come to you as well as how well you are able to connect them to a bigger picture of health.

Dr. Vismai Schonfeleder is one of the masters at creating approaches that create phenomenal retention in a patient-centred, ethical way. In this episode, Martin and Vismai discuss the role of habits, values, and creating a system (your vortex) to make it easy for people to say yes to a chiropractic lifestyle.

Re-exams are a critical way to get clinical feedback. They are a natural pause point where you can evaluate how a patient or client is responding and map out the path ahead. Done well they are the cornerstone of your retention. Done poorly (or sporadically) and they leave people confused and questioning their need for care.

If you want to communicate the value of chiropractic more effectively you HAVE to dial in your approach to the Report of Findings. Done well it can be a way of not only explaining how patients or clients can get what they came for but also open up the possibility of living happier, more active thriving life. Done poorly it can create confusion, concern, and even reactance – where they choose not to have care even though they see that they would benefit.

In this episode of the podcast, Dr Craig Foote joins Martin as they continue the "Keys to Success" series and map out the key elements to an impactful ROF.

What would you think if I told you that the key to helping people follow through with their care was to talk about all the obstacles to them coming in regularly?Β

I know, it’s counter-intuitive but research by psychologist Dr Gabriele Oettingen shows that a key element of successful behaviour change is to think IN ADVANCE about the things that may get in the way and make a plan for what to do if they happen.

It’s all part of Dr Oettingen's WOOP approach.

In this week's podcast, I show you how we can apply this research to help more people and help people more!

"The Fallacy of the Fast" is the idea that there are hacks or shortcuts that can get us results without doing the work you need to do to be successful. It's a fallacy that stops people from getting healthy. It's a fallacy that stops chiropractors from being as successful as they could be. The study referred to in this episode is "How does communication heal? Pathways linking clinician–patient communication to health outcomes".
