Minister Emeritus, Rev. Dennis McCarty will return to discuss "What is Epistemic Justice, and Why Should We Care?" Epistemology is the study of human knowledge. Terms such as "testimonial epistemic injustice" sound WAY too complicated. But what if we think we know something--that just just isn't true? What if we think that without even realizing we're thinking it? That's how ethnic and gender bias work. Rev. Dennis will explain this complex-sounding study in real-world terms. We all have room for self-examination on this one.

When the last bell of the semester rings and the school buses depart for a final time, that is when class truly begins. Well, spoiler, as Unitarian Unviersalists, we are committed to being lifelong learners, year-round, year-over-year. Why? Because it is not only a central value of our living faith tradition, but it is also a counter-cultural, revolutionary rebuke to the passivity and resignation that "this is it." We have so much to learn in order to live. So as we live, may we choose to learn.

50 years ago, a group of black, feminist, lesbian socialists came together to form the Combahee River Collective. Meeting from 1974-1980, this group challenged the narrowness of both white feminism and the misogyny of the Civil Rights Movement. A half century since its first gathering, Rev. The beauty and work of interfaith community building is undeniable when we witness what is possible when we meet on the bridge of our shared values. It is important to remember however that interfaith community is a hyper-contextualized endeavor. Just as we focus on the here and now, on this world, rather than the next life or another plane of existence, so too must we understand how to live out our interfaith principles in society. Rev. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the topic of bodily autonomy is front and center more that it has been in decades. At the core of controlling, predominantly, women's and trans people's bodies is not only misogyny and transphobia, but the hatred and narrow defining of the value and purpose of bodies in general. Remembering and talking about our loved ones who have died can be very painful, even decades after a death. Many struggle to process or transform one’s relationship with the dead, preferring instead to not acknowledge what may feel like the elephant in the room. Rev. School's Back in Session! As our children return for another year of learning and growth, we begin a month-long series: UU 101. Join Rev. Nic Cable as he launches this series that will explore our history, theology, ethics, and community life together as UUs. Today, we will be diving into the rich, winding history of Unitarian Universalism, which transports us from here to Transylvania across the Atlantic to Boston and across what is now called the Midwest to where we are today. It is important for all of us to ask and understand two important questions: "What is our history?" and "What does our history tell us about today?"

The second half of the Life Roots Sermon Series considers the impact of change, loss, death, and what comes after these catalytic events. What happens when great trees fall? Is that the end of their story or does something await? Before we can find out, Rev. Nic will help us to pause to acknowledge those who have died in this annual memorial service at UUCCI.
Join our Children's Ministry Coordinator Adrienne Summerlot for reflections on what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist at this moment in a time when our faith is continually evolving. Adrienne will share her recent experience gathering with other UU religious educators to explore the history and racial justice in Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama.
Beyond our biological and spiritual ancestors, the final journey down into our roots has to do with our local and congregational context. While we may all come from different contexts, we are in relationship now through being a part of the UUCCI community. Rev. Nic will look back to the roots of UUCCI to a time when we were known as the UU Fellowship of Bartholomew County. How might this experienced and inherited history shape and resource our lives today? We will reflect on who we were, are, and have always been.
The Life Roots Sermon Series continues as we turn to the roots of our Unitarian Universalist tradition. What are the roots of UUism and how might those clarify the existential question for us as individuals and as a congregation. Rev. Nic will explore these themes while responding to James Luther Adams assertion, "by their roots ye shall know them."
"Family: We All Have One, Now What?"
In the first of a six-part sermon series titled, Life Roots, Rev. Nic Cable will explore what it means to be connected to an ancestral line of people. Families come in all kinds and sizes, and play a major part in our orientation in the world. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative, our family roots offer important lessons for our lives as individuals and as a community.

Dr. Shaheda Mahomed immigrated from South Africa to the United States in 2021 with her husband, Yousuf. They have one daughter, Yumna, who is currently studying in Mauritius for her medical degree.
Dr. Mahomed is an admitted attorney but has primarily worked in academia for the last 21 years. She has acquired a wide variety of skills while having served in many positions, including the Director of the Wits Law Clinic, Adjunct Professor, Dean, and then Executive Head of Academics. She has published and co-published several accredited articles in both national and international journals, as well as published various chapters in respective textbooks. Dr. Mahomed is the editor of Clinical Law in South Africa.

Spiritual Journey: Stephanie Studley
When The Studley family attended a Standing on the Side of Love rally in November of 2016, Stephanie had no idea what it meant to be a Unitarian Universalist but found herself curious about the organizations supporting the event. She knew Malorie Farrington through a local moms club, so after seeing her at the rally, Stephanie asked her about UUCCI and she invited Stephanie to join her at a service. Then, a couple of months later, Black Lives Matter of Columbus, Indiana had a white ally workshop in the UUCCI Sanctuary. It was the first time Stephanie was in our building. “What is this place? What do they believe?”, she asked herself. Stephanie quickly discovered that UUCCI felt like the village she and her spouse, David, were searching for.

This Sunday, Sandy McCoy will begin our month of Spiritual Journeys by sharing her story with us. Sandy was an end-of-life care professional for 25 years. Throughout the years, she witnessed and learned from each person. She grew with this newer concept of medicine as she walked alongside siblings nearing the end of their lives. Hospice nursing was her calling and a true spiritual journey.
