Our sermon series this term is 'Kingdom Values: dimensions of Jesus’s teaching on the values of the Kingdom of God and its implications for today’. Our preachers will explore this theme each Sunday during the Easter term.
Preacher: The Rev’d Dr Karin Voth Harman, Priest in Charge, St Andrew’s, Cherry Hinton
The Rev’d Dr Karin Voth Harman is currently Priest in Charge of St Andrew’s Cherry Hinton on the outskirts of Cambridge city. She is deeply committed to justice in interpersonal relationships, and has studied the dynamics of power in mother/child relationships as part of her doctoral work on maternal texts in contemporary literature. She has written widely on motherhood and on the relationship between priest and parishioner. Her deepest knowledge of power dynamics comes from running a chicken co-op.
Preacher: The Rev’d Elizabeth Russell, Priest in Charge, Holy Trinity with All Saints, Kensington
Liz studied at the Royal Academy of Music and spent two decades with the BBC, working for Radio 3 in concerts management for the Proms and BBCSO. She then went on for training for ordination at Westcott House during which time Sunday Choral Evensong at St John's was a fairly regular part of the week!
Following her ordination she spent eight years on the team at St Martin-in-the-Fields which included chaplaincy to the unit for those who are homeless.
She is currently priest in charge of the parish church of Imperial College and one of the DDO's for the Diocese of London
Preacher: The Rev’d and Worshipful Justin Gau, Chancellor, Diocese of Bristol
Justin Gau is a Barrister in private practice specialising in fraud and human rights on the Western Circuit. He is non stipendiary assistant Priest at St John the Evangelist, Brownswood Park in the unfashionable part of Finsbury Park and Chancellor of the Diocese of Bristol.
Preacher: The Rev’d Canon Sue Pinnington MBE, Rector, St Michael and All Angels, Houghton-le-Spring
The Rev’d Canon Sue Pinnington has been the Rector of Houghton-Le-Spring in County Durham since 2008. Sue was ordained priest in 1997, following training for ordination at St Stephen’s House, Oxford. She served her curacy in Peterborough Diocese and her first incumbency at St Michael and All Angels, Cottingley in Bradford Diocese, where she was also made an Honorary Canon of Bradford Cathedral. While in Cottingley Sue was awarded an MBE for services to the community through the Cornerstone project. She continues this work in Houghton-Le-Spring through a community project called Space 4, offering a safe space five days a week with one to one support, discrete groups, and community activities aiming to enable people to navigate life’s challenges for themselves. St Michael & All Angels also hosts the new inclusive service ‘Open Table’, which aims to create a safe sacred space to explore faith and what it means for all, regardless of gender or sexuality under the banner ‘Whoever you are, wherever you come from, you are welcome here’. Sue is also the Woman Advisor in Ministry for the Bishop of Durham.
Preacher: The Rev’d Dr Joel Love, Vicar, St Margaret’s, Rochester
The Revd Dr Joel Love is a parish priest. Rochester parish, where he ministers, has recently joined the Inclusive Church network. Joel appeared on this year’s OneBodyOneFaith Rainbow list for his work on LGBT inclusion in the Church. Currently writing a chapter for a book about vows and a piece of postgraduate research on conversation, Joel’s previous academic interests include the vernacular literary dialogues of the French- and German-speaking Reformations. He has taught German, French, and English as a foreign language. In addition, he enjoys contemporary art house cinema, short films, and documentaries, as well as reading, travel, and wild swimming.
Preacher: Dr Medi Volpe, Lecturer in Systematic Theology and Ethics, Cranmer Hall, Durham
Medi (“Meeda”) Ann Volpe is a theologian whose work stands at the intersection of Christian formation, theological anthropology, spirituality and ethics. Currently, she is Lecturer in Theology and Ethics at Durham University (UK). Her work brings contemporary theological themes into conversation with voices from the classical Christian tradition. She also has a special interest in what the Church can learn from the lives of those with intellectual disabilities. Her first book, Rethinking Christian Identity: Doctrine and Discipleship was published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2013, and her essays have appeared in Modern Theology, the International Journal of Systematic Theology, and the Journal of Moral Theology (forthcoming, June 2017). Volpe’s new book project is entitled Resurrecting the Body: An Essay on the Life of the Church.
Preacher: The Rev’d James Ridge, Managing Chaplain, HMP Wayland
James is currently the Managing Chaplain at HMP Wayland in Norfolk where hehas been since August 2016 and before that he was at HMP Chelmsford for seven years including three and a half as Managing Chaplain there. Prior to that, he was in Parish ministry in North Essex. Aside from Criminal Justice and associated issues he has an interest in Liturgy, an eclectic taste in music and a fascination with all things mechanical from clocks to cars and especially with anything bearing an Aston Martin badge. He is married to Ruth who is a Methodist Minister and they have one son who is five.
