46-In today’s ever-changing world, the notion of staying in one job for decades has become increasingly rare. The stability of pensions, fully funded 401k plans, and other long-term benefits are no longer guaranteed. As a result, many working parents are re-evaluating their career paths and exploring the idea of transitioning from employees to entrepreneurs. This shift is not just about financial gain but also about achieving freedom, flexibility, and the opportunity to build something meaningful. If you’ve ever found yourself daydreaming about a better life for your family, now might be the perfect time to consider unbossing yourself.
The journey from employee to entrepreneur is one that requires planning and a clear understanding of yourself. Starting a business simply to make money often leads to frustration and failure. To increase the potential for a successful business, you want to grow a business that aligns with who you are. God has given you certain gifts, abilities, and you have acquired many skills.
It’s also important to consider your personality. Knowing how you produce your best work, communicate with others, and how to use your natural strengths is crucial. You don’t want to be in a business where you have to be everything, but yourself. In fact, one of the most gratifying aspects of having your own business is that you get to be yourself!
80% of the process of starting the right business is knowing yourself. The other 20% is growing a business model that aligns with who you are.
Understanding yourself and why you want to make this transition is crucial. It’s not merely about escaping the 9 to 5 grind; it's about creating a lifestyle that you and your family love. The first step in this journey is recognizing that change is necessary and that you have the potential to achieve your entrepreneurial dreams.
For many, the idea of starting a business is daunting. There are numerous business models to consider, from freelancing to coaching to offering digital products. However, the key to success lies in knowing yourself first. As I mentioned, my personal experience ranges from selling products on eBay to helping grow a digital marketing agency, showing that diverse paths can lead to successful entrepreneurship. But, over time, I have learned more about myself and adapted.
One of the challenges that many working parents face is the tension between family obligations, community responsibilities, and the demands of their day job. Balancing these while building a business requires a plan, goals and a schedule. You can learn to work on your business without neglecting your family and commitments. The goal is to build a business that enhances your family life, not detract from it.

All of us know that the world has changed in many ways. Some are good and some are not. But life has always been it has been full of change. Along with change comes people with ideas for business and social impact and much more.
You’re listening to this podcast episode because you’re interested in change. You have an idea or you have already launched your business.
But going from idea to execution can be difficult sometimes. Even if we love what we do, there are aspects we don't enjoy.
Especially when hard times come.
In this episode, I want to take a few moments to plead with you to avoid quitting. Sometimes when things don’t work we think of quitting. But when you have a side business idea that has a valid market, do not give up.
I want to encourage you to avoid giving up I want to turn your attention to three possibilities. I don’t know what your big "Why" is behind your side business, but I do know that there will be times of challenge and difficulties.
Some of those difficulties won't be related to business. They come from life. We experience trials. During those times, staying consistent is difficult.
And if it seems like growth is slow and if it seems like it’s taking you longer than you expected, I want you to consider three possibilities that can change your perspective.
They will help you avoid giving up.

When you have an abundance mindset, you believe that there are plenty of people to serve, more than enough money to earn, and it’s possible to build a life and business that’s meaningful.
An Abundant Thinker believes that it is possible to grow beyond who they currently are. They believe that it’s possible to become more, do more, have more.
A Scarcity Thinker thinks everything is fixed. They think in terms of “Well, I’m not one of the elite. Or “I just do the best with the cards that I’ve been dealt.” Or “It’s not possible for me to learn or do something new.”
Use this exercise to determine your mindset and become an abundant thinker.
Abundant Thinking Exercise
For this exercise I’d like for you to do the following:
- Settle yourself in a distraction-free zone.
- Take out a sheet of paper and write at the top “My Beliefs About My Business”
- Draw a line down the middle.
- In the left column, write the title, “Limiting Beliefs”.
- In the right column, write the title, “Realistic Truths”.
- Choose to believe the truths.
Limiting Beliefs are not true. They are lies we grow to believe as if they were true. And we have to train ourselves to believe what the Realistic Truths are.
So take some time to write down 3 to 5 and if you want to do more you can, but start with 3-5 Limiting Beliefs you may have about your business or about your business skills.

So often we don't use our own definition of success as our North Star. What we tend to do is use someone else’s success as our North Star.
That leads to discouragement.
In this episode, I share why it's important to define your own version of success and what may be holding you back.
Success is subjective.
For example, success for the lady who has decided to stay home with her children instead of pursuing her full-time career is going to be strikingly different from the woman who decides to open a bake shop.
Success for an insurance salesman will be extremely different from the success of an online entrepreneur.
But no matter who you are, or what you do, you must define your own version of success, so you can experience a life of meaning and significance.

Within a 12-hour period I witnessed two different birds in two different circumstances.
One flew into our house and was scared and trapped. It didn't know where to turn or what to do. It wasn't able to do what it was designed to do.
I observed the second bird the next morning while having my quiet time. It was Robin, and it was hopping around the grass, flying from tree to tree, and doing exactly what it was designed to do.
