In Today’s Kick Ass Boomers Solo Episode, We will be talking about downsizing. Downsizing is definitely not a favorite topic of boomers, but it is something most of us will have to do at some point. Before putting a house on the market, it is important to get rid of as much stuff as possible. I decided to rent a pod so I could start packing and have a place to put all of the boxes. Since we are moving to Florida to a much smaller house, most of our furniture will have to be donated or sold on consignment. Most the have kids today do not want their parents stuff. Except for maybe some very special items, if it is old, even if it is in good condition can also be difficult to sell furniture because there is a glut of boomers selling furniture. So if you are thinking about downsizing, think about what you can get rid of and start packing your house!

How can grandparents build and maintain their relationships with their grandchildren?
Gramps Jeffrey knows a couple of tricks, which he’s happy to talk about in this episode. He has 4 kids and 6 grandchildren and looks at how the kids are growing up as a baby boomer trying to understand how the world has evolved since he was 3 years old. As the author of the acclaimed business book “The Secrets of Retailing…How to Beat Walmart” and a contributor to The Huffington Post of over 100 articles on how to help the nonprofit world and also help grow small businesses, Gramps’ commentary is quite timely in the challenging world we live in.
He has since jumped from writing about business to writing for children. He will talk about his new book, “I Don’t Want to Turn 3” and the role that grandparents play in the growth of their grandchildren.

Scott Houston's Bio:
The way piano is usually taught involves practicing endless scales and etudes, memorizing complicated notation, and focusing on classical music—not to mention the challenge of finding a teacher near you. It's no wonder most folks who take traditional piano lessons either lose interest or become a good sight reader rather than a good player. It's a shame because there's actually an alternative chord-based method that makes piano one of the easiest and most freeing instruments to learn to play!
With this method, new and more experienced players alike use lead sheets (simplified sheet music with letters) to learn the chords and melody of familiar tunes by actually playing them. I didn't invent this method. Heck, I'm not even one of the first people to teach it! But I am the most passionate about using it to help people play recreationally at any age. Throughout my chord-based courses, I focus on popular modern music and break down songs into small exercises, allowing students to quickly build their musical ear and fine motor skills without any notation knowledge. I believe that it's never too late to learn or loosen up your playing, which is why Piano in a Flash can be taken at any experience level, at any speed, all in a flexible online setting built just for adult learners.

Jean describing her book of poetry "Sandprints At Ebbtide" I hope the readers of “Sandprints at Ebbtide” will find these poems, songs and Scripture passages a source of faith and inspiration in confronting the painful life lessons of aging, loss, perceived failures and even death, both for themselves and those they love. Faith guides us to a place of comfort and peace as we reach for meaning and consolation. These poems explore my personal life challenges in the light of God’s grace and redemption. Mother Julian of Norwich summarized all this for me in her still timely quote centuries later, “All shall be well, and every manner of things shall be well.” And St. Paul reminds us that “He whose power is at work in us, is powerful enough, and more than powerful enough, to carry out His purpose beyond all our hopes and dreams.” * The poems, Redemption I and Redemption II launch us into these themes which continue to unfold throughout. It is my wish that you discover joy, meaning and purpose in each and every one of your life lessons. Link to buy Jean's 2 books: https://tinyurl.com/56zxts7e
Jacklyn (Jacci) Ryan's Bio:
Jacklyn Ryan is a Senior Care Advocate. When needing care for her parents, she reached out for help, trusting home care agencies. She learned that appearances can be deceiving. Because of her efforts, stronger laws were passed in her state to provide better protection for vulnerable family members.

Families struggle to find dependable, trusted care. These true stories from Jacci's book are but a glimpse that exposes fraud and manipulation by unscrupulous caregivers. Through these stories, you will learn to identify subtle hints that expose a dishonest care-giver. You'll discover Resources, tips on hiring and managing your caregiver and some basic estate planning questions are included. More than $37 billion is stolen each year because of the financial exploitation of seniors, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Better regulation is needed for in-home care agencies. Some states don't require caregivers to be fingerprinted, background-checked and/or drug-tested! Who can you trust?

Ann's Bio:
Ann did not grow up in one place because her father was in the navy. We moved so often I was the “new girl” in nine different schools before I graduated high school. I am by nature, very shy. Always being the “new kid” helped me learn how to make friends, but I also learned how to be happy alone. I loved to read, so the friends that followed me from place to place were the ones I found in stories.
I was five years old when our family left Jacksonville, Florida. My father was assigned to the military base in Charleston, S.C. We were in Charleston for eight years, but we lived in three different houses and I went to four different schools during those years. All of us liked to fish. We spent many days sitting on the sides of bridges while we fished until our shoulders and legs were tanned a deep copper. I remember climbing over rubble at Ft. Sumter where my imagination ran wild thinking of cannon fire and shouting soldiers. We walked along beaches while Dad told us tales of pirates. He insisted we were walking over treasure that pirates had buried in the sand beneath our feet. I think I get my imagination from my father.
When Dad was transferred to Groton, Connecticut, my brother Mike and I played in snow for the first time while Dad helped weld together the first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus. In Yorktown, Va., we waited until the tide went out so that we could find lead musket balls left over from colonial battles. No matter where we lived, I learned that life was a grand adventure and every day is a gift of unlimited possibilities.
There were only a few certainties in my uncertain life. I knew I was responsible for packing my own stuff. I was also responsible for keeping up in school and at home. I learned at an early age that good people can be found everywhere. I realized that a home does not depend on the house you put it in. These were all priceless lessons to learn at an early age.
I graduated from Florida State University, and served as a teacher with the Peace Corps in Liberia, West Africa. This is where I met and married Jim, another Peace Corps volunteer. We returned home and settled in Evansville, Indiana where it made me so happy to live in one house for more than thirty years.
Over the years, I have been a middle-grade reading teacher, a youth minister, and a college counselor. Through it all, I have been a writer and now I am adding podcaster to that.

Michele Fishburne's Bio:
Michelle Fishburne’s life turned upside down during the 2020 COVID spring when she lost her job and could not find another notwithstanding months of trying. At the end of July 2020, when the lease on her post-divorce house was up and her youngest was going off to college, Michelle found herself without a house, a spouse, a job, or a kid to take care of. That is what she did NOT have. What she DID have was a 2006 motorhome, tons of curiosity, and a lot of experiencing RV’ing all over the country. She combined all of these into a cross-country project, interviewing people about their lives during the pandemic. She RV’d 12,000 miles and interviewed hundreds of people. Now 100 of those 1st-person stories are being published by UNC Press and the Duke Center for Documentary Studies in “Who We Are Now: Stories of What Americans Lost and Found During the COVID-19 Pandemic” (March 2023). Michelle continues to be a full-time nomad, living and working in her motorhome, Airbnb’s, and the occasional house sitting gig. Her favorite thing about aging is that it gives us each an opportunity to change and see the many facets of ourselves, reassembled each time in different ways, like a kaleidoscope.

In this conversation, Diane Bruno, a funeral director, and author, shares the story of her many transitions in life. She also talks about the importance of journaling to help you process your emotions and build your legacy. She discusses how journaling can be beneficial for both oneself and loved ones. Diane also tackles how technology has made learning new things easier than ever and how anyone can access information and courses regardless of age or experience. She believes that boomers make great life coaches because of our life experiences, which make us well-equipped to provide guidance to others.
Let’s get to know more about Diane Bruno’s passion.
I am an accomplished communications professional who knows how to craft messages that resonate with their intended audience. With over twenty years of experience in the communications field, I have witnessed it all and have been on the cutting edge of constant change. From the advent of the first corporate websites and intranets and throughout the evolution of social media technologies, all organizations have one goal in common, the desire to speak effectively to their internal and external audience.
I launched my career at DDB Worldwide (part of Omnicom Group), one of the most influential and sought-after agencies in the advertising arena, with a focus on press materials and releases, executive communications, employee engagement, copywriting, corporate social responsibility, and more. The trajectory of my career has been an interesting and diverse migration. From the corporate communications arena to the funeral industry and back around, the one constant that has endured is my passionate love for the written word.
Respect, empathy, clarity, validation, and appreciation need to be a part of every written message. I incorporate each of those into my approach to keeping employees and internal and external stakeholders engaged; they are the principles I live by in every aspect of my life.

“Sometimes it's [facing changes] not by our own choice, but the universe has a plan in place, and all these transitions happen in clusters, and that can be really overwhelming.” - Diane Bruno
“By journaling, you get to really see where you've been, what your successes have been, what you're most proud of, and what's kind of missing, you know, what you would like to pursue, so it's a great way of tapping into yourself. It is a great way of planning out the future because there is a future, and there are so many different things you could do with so many different stages of life.” - Diane Bruno

Gail Gensler is a pro-aging lifestyle model who is changing the way people think about age through fitness and embracing a healthy lifestyle from a "real woman's" perspective. Her life philosophy is that age shouldn't have any effect on how we live, how we look, or what kind of workouts we do. She is here to break down the barriers of institutional ageism and change how fitness brands see midlife women. In this age of inclusivity, we are not represented, and it is her goal to be the model representing this powerful demographic. This is the legacy she wants to leave.

Welcome Back to Kick Ass Boomer, Today we are joined by Dr. Ynge Ljung!
Dr. Ynge Ljung was born and raised in Sweden, Dr. Ynge graduated as Chemical Engineer, but nobody at that time hired women engineers, and she moved to Bangla Desh, then to Venezuela. In 1990 she came to The United States, where she went to The Traditional School For Chinese Medicine in Miami from 1992 - 1995 when she graduated as an Acupuncture Physician. She opened her own clinic and had amazing results, but one or another didn’t respond as she expected. The patient would feel much better after the treatment, but the ailment would come back, mostly aches and pains and digestive problems.
This was not acceptable to Her so she started a quest to find what the root was, and found that allergies played a big role in these patients, and took courses to learn how to remedy this. In 1998 she started treating for allergies with the system called NAET. It was an excellent protocol and she had great results, but it took a lot of time and many visits, so many patients didn’t finish their treatments due to lack of time and money, and many families had more than one child, and allergies themselves. In 2000, She started to experiment and research other methods to speed up the process. By now allergies started to be more and more common, and with many people living far away from a practitioner, she started to work on a protocol and system the patients could do themselves. In 2006 The Allergy Kit was born and launched on the internet! With one DIY kit, a family can treat their whole family, thus taking the power of their health back into their own hands and this is the mission and passion of Dr. Ynge!

Although he fondly recalls the newspaper business as his “crazy ex-girlfriend,” he now embraces the life of a marketing copywriter. He enjoys used-book shops, vinyl records, marching bands, and dysfunctional love songs. R.J. lives in Grand Island, NE, which is, of course, not a real island. “Lion Taming, Dating and Other Dangerous Endeavors” is his first book.

Welcome Back to Kick Ass Boomer, Today we are joined by Michael Cobb. At the height of a successful career in the computer industry, Mr. Cobb left to pursue more pioneering opportunities in the emerging real estate markets of Central America. In 1996, he and his business partner formed a company, Exotic Caye International, to provide loans to North Americans purchasing properties in Belize, Honduras, and throughout the region.
As the need for capital outstripped the supply, the mortgage company was converted to an international bank under the jurisdiction of Belize. It continues to provide mortgage services but has expanded its services to encompass the full realm of financial products.
Mr. Cobb also saw the need for a regional real estate company that would serve the Baby Boomer consumer with a North American standard product for the next 2 decades. He led the group into real estate development and created a holding company for several properties including a resort on Ambergris Caye, Belize. In August of 2000, Exotic Caye purchased 3.5 miles of Pacific Beachfront property due west of Managua, Nicaragua. This master-planned community hosts world-class infrastructure, homes, and condominium units. In February of 2006, the ECI Development group acquired 1100 acres and 3km of coastline in Costa Rica, setting the stage for expansion into this popular market. Most recently they merged their Belize property with a much larger parcel and have begun to develop 200 condominiums units on Ambergris Caye, Belize.
Additionally, Michael has spoken at hundreds of international conferences about real estate financing and development. He has acted as a consultant to The Oxford Club and gives counsel to various real estate projects throughout Central America.

Lisa E. Betz never intended to become a writer. She followed her love of math and science to a degree in mechanical engineering and a job at an aluminum manufacturing plant. (She knows the real reason aluminum foil is shiny on one side and dull on the other.)
After six years in the industry, parenthood led her to change jobs and become a high school substitute, which led to an opportunity to direct a high school play. Lisa’s directorial debut was a success, leading to a dozen more plays, everything from Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde, plus one pun-filled melodrama she wrote herself.
Looking back, Lisa can see how her unconventional path to authordom prepared her to create her quirky, unusual mysteries. Her years leading Bible studies gave her a deep understanding and appreciation for the first-century setting of her books. Her analytical, engineering mind helped her create complex, clever mystery plots. And her years directing high school plays. It gave her a deeper understanding of how to develop complex, lovable, sometimes snarky characters.
In addition to writing novels, Lisa speaks and blogs about living with authenticity and purpose. She also experiments with ancient Roman recipes, eats too much chocolate, and enjoys long walks in the woods. She and her husband live on a beautiful, wooded hillside on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with their rambunctious cat, Scallywag, who is the inspiration for Nemesis, the mischief-making cat who stalks the pages of the Livia Aemilia Mysteries.

Book Descriptions
Death and a Crocodile (Livia Aemilia Mysteries, #1)In ancient Rome, sensible young ladies don’t investigate crimes, but Livia Aemilia doesn’t let stuffy conventions stand in her way. When her father is murdered and her innocent brother accused of the crime, Livia and her spunky maidservant set out to identify the killer. Will their meddling expose the culprit or lead them into mortal danger? A fast-paced mystery set in first-century Rome, featuring a feisty amateur sleuth, a cast of eccentric characters, and a glimpse of the early church.
Fountains and Secrets (Livia Aemilia Mysteries, #2)
Nancy Drew meets ancient Rome. Impulsive Livia is more interested in solving a missing persons case than hiring fresco painters for their new home remodel. But her husband forbids her to get involved, knowing that she could be in extreme danger. Soon their lack of trust in each other leads them to behave in counterproductive ways that threaten their new marriage and personal safety.
Fountains and Secrets, book 2 in the Livia Aemilia Mysteries, is quirky, fast paced, and clever, showing readers that trust and honesty are more important than winning the battle of the wills.
