Sculpture Trail, Farm and Garden Walks
Art Farm Birchs Bay (AFBB) is a not-for-profit association established to foster engagement between community, artists, art and the landscape.
AFBB is situated at Five Bob Farm, an innovative working farm in the south Channel and home to Diemen Pepper. A visit to the Art Farm includes meandering through fields of Tasmanian native pepper, orchards and an extensive kitchen garden.
Art Farm Birchs Bay hosts exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops and the renowned Sculpture Trail - an annual sculpture exhibition featuring Tasmanian and interstate artists with support by private sponsorship and local government.
Art Farm Birchs Bay is based in lutruwita (Tasmania), approx 35 minutes south of nipaluna (Hobart) and 10 minutes south of putalina (Oyster Cove). We acknowledge the traditional owners of this land, the palawa people, and pay deep respect to elders past and present, to the many Aboriginal people that did not make elder status, and to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community that continue to care for Country.

ON THE TRAIL - STOP No.1Phytoplanktonby Richard Whittaker Steel Wood and Paint Phytoplanktons are endangered through our environmental vandalism, yet they are a vital basis to our food chain. Although minuscule, they are intricate and beautiful.
ON THE TRAIL - STOP No.2The Pepper Shed by Worm & Pop Hand-cut timber Using meticulously hand-cut and assembled timber, this work echoes the shape of the Five Bob pepper shed while supporting a young crab apple tree.
HOW IT WORKSThe sculpture trail is designed as a loop walk; taking in 22 new sculptures on the trail. As you walk along the trail, you’ll find each piece of artwork has a QR code. You can scan each code to listen and read more about the artwork and artist. You can chose to follow the playlist provided below, which will direct you along the intended trail. Or simply scan the QR codes as you go. (QR Code is a Quick Response Code, and can be scanned by the camera on your phone, tablet or ipad) Don’t worry if you miss a piece, you can skip ahead in the playlist, and regain the trail when ready. We recommend starting at Distillery Gallery (the small shed near the start of the trail) , then heading out through the gate down into the orchid. Welcome to the latest Sculpture Prize Exhibition at Art Farm Birchs Bay.This year, you will see an exciting embrace of experimentation. You’ll find 22 new sculptures on the trail, big and small… in addition to the 30 artworks in our permanent collection. The exhibition runs across Spring and Summer, until February 6th and open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Most works are for sale, with profits going towards the artists, the upkeep of the trail, and hosting community events. Each year, we purchase a sculpture which joins our permanent collection for you to view year-round. This year, we are also excited to present the exhibition Ephemeral Pleasures in the Distillery Gallery. Make sure to view this before heading out on the sculpture trail, or when you return from the sculpture trail loop walk.
