Join Sarah for the second season of The Sincere Yogi Podcast talking all things asana! In this season, Sarah breaks down the third limb of the eight-limbed path of yoga, the yoga asana or postures. Not only will you learn the intention behind the postural practice of yoga, but you will also learn the history of key lineages and styles of practice that are common among studio classes today.

In this episode, Sarah discusses the purpose of physical practice along with the benefits of yoga postures. While the yoga postures do not encompass the entirety of yoga, they are an important tool along the journey of the eight-limbed path. Some of the benefits of the postures remain physical; the strength, mobility, and detoxification process that accompanies most approaches to asana. Still, the postures extend beyond the physical and into the subtle body by building internal awareness and structure to the breath. It's these more subtle benefits that open the door for more profound experiences within the practices of pranayama and meditation, limbs that proceed asana along the eight-limbed path.

Join Sarah as she discusses the final niyama in the eight-limbed path, Ishvara Pranidhana. Ishvara Pranidhana is the act of surrendering to a higher source, or God. This topic can feel like a loaded one since yoga has grown in popularity. It's important to keep in mind that because of cultural upbringing, religious beliefs, and personal values, this practice will be incredibly personalized to the practitioner. That doesn't mean you have to shy away from the topic, or stop practicing if you're already religious. Learn how you can incorporate Ishvara Pranidhana in your life both on and off the yoga mat!

Join Sarah to discuss the fourth niyama, or mental observance, svadhyaya. Svadhyaya is the act of self-study and encompasses everything from reading books to investing in workshops and trainings. However, it doesn't end there. If you're not implementing what you're learning then you're not really practicing svadhyaya. Self study is not just about furthering your education but also studying yourself as you do so. Svadhyaya asks you to sit in the observer seat and notice your reactions, thought patterns and subsequent behaviors.

Join Sarah as she discusses the third niyama on the eight-limbed path of yoga - tapas. Tapas, meaning austerity or discipline, is a critical aspect of any yoga practice. Every limb along the eight-limbed path of yoga will require some level of awareness and discipline in order to put these concepts into practice. While it is important to hold yourself accountable, it's also important to understand that discipline is not a form of punishment but rather a radical form of self-love. The practice of tapas helps keep that inner fire alive that drives you forward in your yoga journey, even on the days when your motivation is low.

Join Sarah as she continues exploring the yoga niyamas and the eight-limbed path of yoga. In this episode, Sarah dives into the topic of santosha, or contentment, the second niyama along the eight-limbed path. While the concept of contentment is simple to grasp, the application and continuous cultivation of contentment can be challenging. Cultivating contentment requires patience, honesty, and acceptance. Without practicing the previous yamas and niyamas, finding contentment can seem nearly impossible. Learn how you can cultivate contentment on your yoga mat and in your everyday life, and hear Sarah's personal journey with contentment in her backbend practice.

Join Sarah for a discussion about the yoga niyamas, the second limb of the eight limbed path of yoga. While the yoga yamas are moral disciplines, the niyamas are mental observances. To practice the yoga niyamas is a daily intention of honesty and mindfulness.

Like the yamas, there are five niyamas to practice and the first niyama is saucha or purity. Saucha is the perfect segue between the first and second limb of yoga as the yoga yamas help purify your karmic energy and patterns.

Learn more about the practice of saucha and discover how you can live this practice both on and off your yoga mat!

Join Sarah as she explores the practice of aparigraha or non-possessiveness. Aparigraha is often referenced in conversation with greed or not being attached to physical objects. However, the practice of non-attachment also refers to the past, present, and future. This is where aparigraha becomes a challenging mental practice. Non-attachment, or "letting go," does not mean you bypass your thoughts or feelings. It's important to be present with your experiences in order to learn and grow. However, you cannot become so consumed by your past experiences, or future worries, that you forget to be present in this very moment.

Let's get intimate! In this episode, Sarah discusses the fourth yama, brahmacharya in both its traditional and modern practice. While brahmacharya can be taken to the extreme and practiced as pure celibacy, there are other ways to incorporate non-excess of pleasure into your life.

While non-excess is an aspect of brahmacharya, it is important that you don't confuse the practice of brahmacharya with the practice of non-possessiveness or aparigraha, the fifth and final yama. Cultural and societal norms may affect one's perception and practice of brahmacharya, this is why it is best to view brahmacharya through the lens of prana or vital life energy. By practicing restraint or non-excess of your vital life energy you can then use your prana to pierce through your energetic channels and reach higher states of consciousness. When practiced with this in mind, brahmacharya becomes more about conserving one's energy than removing oneself from pleasure completely.

Join Sarah as she discusses the third yama of the eight-limbed path of yoga, asteya. Asteya means non-stealing and while it's easy to understand this concept of stealing on a surface level, there are multiple ways that we steal time, lessons, and moments of joy away from ourselves and others.

The practice of asteya occurs both on and off your yoga mat. Staying present in your practice and in your everyday life, allows you to observe whether or not you're in alignment with asteya.

Ahimsa is translated into non-harming in thought, word, and deed. It is the very first Yama in the ethical disciplines of the yoga practice. Ahimsa sets the foundation for the yoga Yamas and helps prepare your mind and body for your asana practice and meditation.

While it seems straightforward, non-harming can be a tricky principle to cultivate. In order to practice ahimsa, we must first hold compassion for ourselves and others. Holding compassion, building understanding, and moving through fear or powerlessness are all aspects to consider when practicing ahimsa.

Join Sarah as she dives deeper into the topic of non-harming and provides examples on how to cultivate this practice both on and off your yoga mat.

Ashtanga yoga is a set sequence of postures with multiple, progressing series. In a traditional ashtanga Mysore class, students learn the postures one by one and only move on to learn more once they have developed a solid understanding of their current postures. This creates a very personalized practice where students can move at their own pace and receive direct feedback from their teachers.

While ashtanga yoga has grown in popularity, Sarah's experience with the practice is far from the traditional path, at least at first. In this episode, Sarah reviews the ashtanga yoga system, the tristhana nethod, and personal account with the ashtanga yoga practice.

Learn how she went from a less conventional ashtangi to an apprentice in the Mysore style of ashtanga yoga teaching.
