Welcome to Becoming a Sleep Consultant with Jayne Havens. On this podcast, I’ll be discussing the business side of sleep consulting. You’ll have an insider’s view on launching, growing, and even scaling a sleep consulting business. This is NOT a podcast about sleep training. This is a podcast about business building and entrepreneurship.

This is a topic that I have covered before, but since every day as a Sleep Consultant looks different I decided to tackle it again! The beautiful thing about running your own business is that you get to do it in a way that works for you. This example of “A Day in the Life” is my first day back at work with my kids back in school. It felt great to have a full day of calls and to be back in the swing of things again. I am sure tomorrow will look entirely different!

Amber Matusky has been supporting families through birth and the transition into parenthood as a birth and postpartum doula since 2006. She is a solo parent to two amazing kids, 13 years apart. She began sleep consulting earlier this year as a way to further support her clients long term, as well as a means to realize her dreams of being more present for her kids. One day Amber wishes to move abroad, and she believes that her ability to support families virtually is going to be what allows her to make this move for her family one day! Amber finds peace in nature. You can find her in the garden growing vegetables, in the kitchen preserving the bounty or on the water paddle boarding in her free time!
On this episode of the Becoming a Sleep Consultant Podcast Amber shares what it looks like to support her clients as they work towards independent sleep habits for their children while she continues to bedshare in her own home.
Amber shares:
- How bedsharing works for her and her child, but if there ever came a point where the arrangement no longer felt sustainable, she would simply make a change!
- That she certainly had doubts about supporting families to sleep in a way that was different from what her sleeping arrangements look like at home, but then she realized that as a doula she is very comfortable supporting births that look different from her birth experiences - and she loves that side of her work.
- How she plans to grow her sleep consulting business so that she can transition to full time virtual work!

Tara Dakin Sauer, LMFT, PMH-C is a CPSM graduate passionate about the impact of infant sleep on parental mental health! Tara’s therapy practice, Renew Psychotherapy, specializes in treating trauma that occurs or resurfaces during pregnancy or postpartum. Tara's consulting business, a Renewed Momma, merges her expertise as a newborn care specialist, sleep consultant, and perinatal mental health professional to provide trauma-informed sleep programs that are uniquely tailored to meet the needs of moms experiencing significant anxiety.
Tara is also excited about combining her knowledge and skill set related to both maternal mental health and infant sleep to help other sleep-based postpartum professionals feel more confident in supporting their clients’ mental and emotional well-being. This newest part of her business is dedicated to providing education, resources, and collaborative care services to support sleep consultants, NCSs, and postpartum doulas in being able to more holistically promote the physical and emotional wellness of both babies and parents!
On this episode of the Becoming a Sleep Consultant podcast Tara and I discussed how to best combat the negativity surrounding sleep training.
Tara shares:
- That the intense mom shaming that happens on both sides of the sleep training debate is almost always rooted in a parent’s insecurities about their own choices they are making for their family.
- That a parent’s discomfort with the crying during sleep training is often less about the child’s discomfort and more so about the parent’s own discomfort with the noise.
- As sleep consultants its most important to show up to these conversations with confidence. When you truly believe that the support you are providing your clients is what is ultimately best for the child and the family as a whole, it’s way easier to navigate these conversations.
