Inside Warringah is a podcast looking at the 2022 Australian Federal Election, specifically from the perspective of the Northern Beaches.
In this, our last episode of Inside Warringah we talk to electoral analyst Ben Raue from The Tally Room on how he sees the lay of the land in the final week before polling day.
We look at the electorates in the Northern Beaches, specifically Warringah and Mackellar, but also look in neighbouring seats like North Sydney and Wentworth. Will Sydney be awash with teal or with future hindsight, will end up becoming all hype?
Also in the episode, we look at the Senate and who NSW will likely elect as their federal senators.
In this episode we continue talking to candidates standing in Warringah, with David Mickleburgh from Labor and Kristyn Glanville from The Greens.
We first get their take on independent MP Zali Steggal and also how we transition carbon intensive industries to help Australia reach net zero emissions, the rising cost of housing and the spiralling cost of living.

In Part 2 of the Mackellar Candidate Forum, we follow the continue the discussion where we left off and cover more policies that make up this coming federal election. We talk about how the UAP can guarantee a 3% interest rate for home buyers, temporary protection visas, support for the ABC, lies in political advertising and supporting a federal intervention to remove the seawall at Collaroy.
We also hear from each candidate where they are allocating their preferences and what will happen in a minority government.
The candidate forum is hosted by Northern Beaches Climate Action Network (NBCAN) and the Voices of Mackellar. Those who attended included Barry Steele from The New Liberals, Independent Dr Sophie Scamps, Labor's Paula Goodman, Christopher Ball from the United Australia Party and Ethan Hrnjack from the Greens. Sitting member Jason Falinski from the Liberal Party and Darren Dickson from One Nation did not attend.

In this episode we start talking to candidates standing in Warringah, starting with Andrew Robertson from the United Australia Party and Steven Tripp from One Nation. We wanted to know how they became candidates and what issues they are talking about during the election.
We talk about the Spit Bridge, how that may have become a symbol of neglect for the local area, debt and foreign ownership and property affordability on the Northern Beaches. In this episode, we also cover free speech and whether a bill of rights is needed in Australia.

In this episode we talk to Lambert Fisher from Gaycare Australia, an organisation that gives real support to the LGBTQI community on the Northern beaches. They are dedicated to the mental and physical health of this community, helping with issues like homelessness and drug or alcohol dependancy. This is especially important to LGBTQI kids on the Northern Beaches, who sometimes don't have parents who accept their identify when they come out.
Debates around the LGBTQI community have come up with the Liberal Party's preselection of Katherine Deves in Warringah. Her views of on transgender or gender diverse people, particularly around sport participation, has led to a cultural debate that has hijacked coverage of the federal election.
Lambert calls for tolerance and acceptance, as whoever is elected needs to represent all members of the community, and the issues faced by those who seek Gaycare's support are more real than the role of trans women in women’s sport.
In Part 2 of our chat with Kim Smee, from the Manly Observer, we talk local politics and get her thoughts on the upcoming federal election.
We also hear how this election could be framed as an argument between two opposing sides on what people fear the most. On one side, people fearing the environmental impact of climate change and on the other, people fearing the spread of 'wokism' and how social change has meant they simply can't be themselves anymore. We also touch base on announcements on the Wakehurst Parkway and the Beaches Link Tunnel, and what candidates think of the proposals.
We talk to Kim Smee from the Manly Observer to understand her role in the local community in delivering accessible and hyper-local news.
We hear how, especially in time of crisis like when in early March this year heavy rainfall led to flash flooding across the Northern Beaches, the Manly Observer became one of the most valuable go-to news sources for locals. We talk about how this need became apparent when the printed Manly Daily stopped being delivered and how other local publications like the Tawny Frogmouth or the Northern Beaches Advocate came to deliver simple news without the clickbait.
This episode is a master-class progressive politics on the northern beaches. Will joins local campaigner Louise Hislop, who has long worked towards getting an independent elected in Warringah, starting with Australian Idol host James Mathison to eventually supporting Zali Steggal's win in 2019. Will asks how it all started and how she got into politics. Its a story of how different, varied community groups bubbled away to eventually crescendo into one big movement in voting Tony Abbott out.
We also look at what lessons we can learn from and apply to the upcoming 2022 Federal Election - especially around fake news and some false yarns being spun in neighbouring electorates of Mackellar.
Matt and Will join Michael Koziol, Sydney Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, to talk about why 90 days out from election, some electorates (including Warringah) are still waiting on a Liberal Party candidate. It's an old debate in the Liberal Party between the idea of local members choosing a candidate or one being chosen by Scott Morrison and head office.
We talk about what the election looks like in nearby seats of Mackellar, North Sydney and Wentworth, all of which have a growing Voices Of movement that increasingly looking competitive. Lastly we ask, what made Michael interested in writing about politics rather than be a politician himself.
Will and Matt chat for the first time to tackle what's ahead of them - the big Federal Election. They talk about what happened last time in Warringah, Zali's win three years ago and if she can repeat it and lastly, why there aren't any Liberal candidates out there to take her on.
