Jesus' first claim in John 6:35 is, "I am the bread of life" and it comes with some heavy implications about Jesus' divinity, mission and obedience to the Father's will. You will hear about how Jesus' claim was purposeful for his audience and for us today as we strive to live in light of the work of God, which is to believe in the one he has sent. Welcome to our first sermon on Jesus' 7 I AM Statements. John records 7 statements where Jesus uses the phrase “I AM” about himself, to make himself equal with God. His original audience would be transported back to the story of Moses and the burning bush in Exodus 3. In Exodus 3, God reveals himself to Moses and to us to make his presence, power and purpose known. Listen in on how this interaction is not only important for understanding the narrative of the Bible, but how it is important for our lives.
In honor of Memorial Day, we are looking at how God desires us to highlight and remember his character through how He has been faithful to us by looking into how Joshua lead the Israelites to construct a memorial to remember the Jordan River crossing.
We are finishing up our series in 1 John this week. In this passage, John's focus is continuing to live a life that glorifies the one true God and recognizing that eternal life comes through Jesus. I also summarize three very important things we have been challenged by in 1 John:
- To develop a more full and beautiful vision of the person, power and reward of Jesus Christ
- To look in to our own discipleship as it relates to our intimacy with Jesus
- To see evil in the world as it relates to our hope in Jesus to overcome evil and the devil

Today's text of 1 John 4:1-6 is presented in light of the narrative shared in Jeremiah 28 where Hannaniah prophecies that the King of Babylon will be defeated and all the Jewish captives will be released within two years. Jeremiah rebukes the prophecy, but not with his own words or strength. In our world with so many false and contrary messages to the Gospel out there we need to build skills and have strong basis of Scripture's authority for guiding us in who we listen to as authorities that form our lives.
A life of sin is not compatible with a life of fellowship with God. John reinforces that the Father's love for his children is what gives us hope for Jesus' return and living a life of integrity, under his operating system that is empowered by the Holy Spirit. The world and its desires will lead us astray, so we must confidently remain in Christ. The Apostle John was writing to his audience of Christians who were experiencing temptations and persecution from within and outside of the church. The world and the evil it represents and the antichrist spirit present in those who had previously fellowshipped with the believers created a real threat to those believers who John encourages and admonishes to remain in Christ.
At the end of my sermon I had our congregation to listen to the song "Holy Spirit" sung by Francesca Battistelli (here) to be able to think about the answer to the question about a time when God protected you or His word gave hope and assurance.

James 5:17-18 says, "Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." Today we're discovering how prayer and listening are transformational practices to cultivate intimacy in our relationship with God and change the world around us. We will explore and uncover how these practices encouraged and helped Elijah see the way forward during dark and discouraging times in Israel's history.

In our church we believe in the authority of Scripture that is standard by which all conduct, beliefs and opinions are tested to live a godly life. We don't just believe this as some creedal statement, but truly attempt to live it. Listen to how the Apostle Paul's words to young Timothy are applicable today and guides us as we trust God and His word.

The foundation of joyful fellowship with Christ is highlighted by the practices of obedience and repentance. Obedience birthed from intimacy and knowledge of God and His word supernaturally overflows in our love for others at every stage of our spiritual growth. Which leads us to the last point today, which is, the Gospel is for all and unites us under Christ to receive one another with joy. It is important to note that Peter does not lead with the Gospel, but he recognized the process of transformation that God is working in him to view people without unnecessary points of division, and to represent God well by not showing partiality. The church today would benefit from taking these points into consideration and how it lends to the credibility of the message of the Gospel, rather than detracts from it.

This may be a difficult road to choose, but it brings freedom and victory in Christ that leads us closer in fellowship with God and one another.

Psalms 19, written by King David really emphasizes that our relationship to God as Creator and King becomes more clear as we immerse ourselves in the revelation of himself through creation and His word.
Creation is not a substitute for God's Word that gives us a full picture of who God is and what His purposes from an eternal perspective are.

Today we will consider how a life of faith produces fruit as we align ourselves with God’s word by noticing how this 1st Psalm sets the tone to the rest of the book, the characteristics of the righteous and the wicked outlined in Psalms 1 and considerations we give to this Psalm in light of the New Testament revelation of the person and work of Jesus Christ.
