For the past few months, I’ve been toying with the idea of sunsetting TQ4LP, but I haven’t been able to make a definitive decision. You see, when I started this podcast, I had no idea where it would go. I had no idea if anyone would be interested in what I had to say. I had no idea how transformative of an experience it would be for me. Well, as fate would have it, it’s changed my life.
Throughout Seasons #1 & #2, I explored topics of personal interest simply because I wanted to dive deeper. TQ4LP gave me a convenient excuse to “geek out,” which not only taught me more about the topics but allowed me to integrate what I learned into my daily life, which was hugely beneficial.
For Season #3, I pivoted the show, as I wanted the content to me more intentional about helping people level-up their mindset to achieve peak performance in all areas of their life. I figured that, in some way, if I could help shorten the learning curve or given listeners a way to think differently about things or to give others more confidence, their lives would improve. After all, who wants to stay stuck? I know I don’t. No one does.
Unfortunately, far too many people are willing to stay stuck because they don’t have the tools necessary to get unstuck or they don’t have the confidence that anything they try will help or they are comfortable with what’s familiar because the familiar is certain.
In any case, my hope was that helping others shift or reframe their mindset to make their lives better or, at least, parts of their lives better would be a noble pursuit. In some small way, TQ4LP was a service to others, a way to give away the knowledge, insights, and dare I say, wisdom that was given to me by so many remarkable people in my life. With that, I’ve arrived at a place where I know it’s time to sunset the show.
The Season #3 finale speaks to episodes that I found particularly helpful for me in my personal quest to level-up my mindset to achieve peak performance in my life. Enjoy!

A labyrinth is a maze.
As with any complicated maze, it's challenging to find your way to the other side without getting lost or turned around.
In many cases, you end up right back where you started, which is what happens when you engage in negative self-talk or buy into the beliefs that limit your potential, which can have massive implications on your self-worth and overall perception of the world.
Depending on your background with religion, philosophy, or modern-day social media, you may advocate the perspective that "life is suffering" because most people either don't know how much they are suffering or don't know what it's like not to suffer.
There's a better way.
Step #1: You need to acknowledge that your brain IS NOT broken, but your mindset IS NOT okay.
Step #2: You must stop controlling things in the external environment trying to fix things within yourself.
Step #3: You need to accept that everything in life is neutral until you give it meaning.
Get more specifics by checking how to minimize or eliminate suffering so you can argue for and live up to your potential.

There is no other way to state it: Distraction is a dream killer.
There are many reasons why distractions kill dreams. Some of us have self-limiting beliefs, some of us have emotional triggers that knock us off our game, and some of us are just lazy.
No matter the reason, distractions serve as an avoidance mechanism that allow us to avoid engaging in those things that evoke anxiety and stress. Distractions allow us to avoid dealing with problems and can often lead to self-sabotaging behaviors.
Fortunately, there are ways to minimize and/or eliminate distractions. These approaches do, however, require that we prioritize our dreams ahead of whatever convenient distractions exist.
Each of us only has one chance at this life and the biggest regrets people have as they approach the end of life are those things that they never attempted in the first place.
Distraction has no power without our participation.

Think back on a time when you successfully navigated conflict with someone. What worked and why? Did you use that approach in future conflict with that person?
If so, you are keenly attuned to the power of precedent, which is an event or action that guides subsequent circumstances that are similar.
Now, think back on a time when you established precedent as a coping strategy to avoid pain or suffering. To what extent did that precedent add productive value to your life in the short- or long-term?
In either case, precedent that leads to favorable or unfavorable outcomes is a reactive way to live because we become prisoners of the moment, trying to tap into those things that provide some semblance of relief.
There’s a better way.
The triumph of principle over precedent allows you to live an intentional life, a life that’s on purpose. You do this by honoring yourself, living a healthy life – physically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually, facing your fears, and learning from your mistakes.
This episode explores 4 approaches you can employ to live a principled life, a life grounded in principles rather than living in a reactionary way, which is, ultimately, more gratifying, and more fulfilling.

If you let what other people think about you affect how you show up in the world, LISTEN UP!
You're, like the rest of us, are constantly being judged. You're constantly being assessed and evaluated by others. The reason?
Judgment, assessment, and evaluation are part of the human condition because people are built to make cognitive adaptations, which are coping strategies deeply rooted in human behavior, such as detecting danger or making decisions that allow for reproduction, survival, and evolution.
Whether such judgments are right, wrong, or accurate isn't the point. The broader point is that all humans judge and their judgments are none of your business.
Each person's perspective or perception of you is theirs and any judgment they have of you is more of a reflection on them than you.
This episode explores 4 ways that can help you to stop worrying about what others think about you - it's none of your business anyway - so you can level-up your mindset and design healthier, happier relationships.

Think back on the moment when you first learned how to ride a bike, climb a tree, or drive a car. Because you didn't know how to do any of these things, you approached the experience with awe and wonder. You were engaged in each adventure with rapt curiosity. Unfortunately, research informs that curiosity begins dwindling around age 5 and is replaced by preconceived notions and, later, past experiences, which leads to a life that's stale and routine toward approaching problems or situations.
Fortunately, there is an alternative. Shoshin, the Zen Buddhist word for "beginner's mind," allows us to look at every situation in which we find ourselves as if it's the first time we're seeing or experiencing it. It allows us to be open to possibilities and potentialities versus simply deferring to our preconceptions or our "expertise."

Recently, I had the privilege of being a guest on The Mind Over Matter Podcast with Heather Hakes. Heather is a coach who has been studying psychology, personal development, and human potential for more than 20 years. Her emphasis on the power of mindset to shift paradigms in people’s lives made for a terrific conversation. She asked me about stepping into an unknown future pertaining to my consulting business and burgeoning ministry, what it means to un-memorize yourself to set down the pain of your past, the essential nature of self-love and self-care, how to win the day by being intentional with how we spend our time, and much more! It was an honor being a guest on her show and have no doubt our conversation will level-up your mindset so you can perform better in all areas of your life. THANK YOU for joining the conversation!

What is potential? As an adjective, it means “having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.” As a noun, it means “latent qualities or abilities that may be developed and lead to future success or usefulness.”
Immaterial of which definition you emphasize, far too many people argue against their potential because they never pursue or intend to pursue their full potential.
These people talk themselves out of it by deciding that pursuing their potential is too difficult or too time consuming or wouldn’t be accepted by others. Living this way point to self-imposed limiting beliefs, which is especially insidious considering that the world doesn’t get your best or what you’re capable of.
If this is you, I encourage you to stop arguing AGAINST your potential and start arguing FOR your potential.
This episode explores ways to argue for your potential and how the benefits of doing so levels-up your mindset and gives you a shot at achieving peak performance. After all, each of us is on this pale, blue rock for a short amount of time and such a shift in mindset can be game changing for your life.

The distinction between “reacting” and “responding” appears to be subtle or, merely, semantics, but there is a significant difference between how each shows up in our lives. “Reacting” is taking action back AT someone or something, which is driven by our survival instinct, while “responding” is answering back TO someone or something, which is driven by our rational mind. The former relates to physical or psychological threat, which takes the form of “baggage,” such as fear of failure, fear of not being accepted, fear of the unknown, and the like. The latter allows us to think deliberately and helps guide our behavioral responses to situations in which we find ourselves. Learning how to manage this difference helps you level-up your mindset to achieve peak performance in life and relationships. THANK YOU for joining the conversation!

In 1985, the band, Fleetwood Mac, released a song entitled, “Jumping at Shadows,” which is a song about feelings of insignificance and regret of a life not lived to the fullest. It’s also a metaphor that, when we jump at shadows, we tend to be afraid of small or inconsequential things that we really shouldn’t be scared by. But when we focus on those things, when we jump at shadows, we risk not living a joyful, fulfilled life.
Fortunately, there is a systematic approach that allows you to assess risk based on our tolerance of or aversion to risk to level-up your mindset and achieve your greatest desires and make your dreams come true. The question is: What risks are you willing to take?

Research informs us that we have ~60-70k thoughts per day and 80% of those thoughts are negative and 95% of them are repetitive. That equates to ~50k negative thoughts per day and only ~3k thoughts that occur when we aren’t on autopilot. Those data points are quite sobering to consider and it’s no wonder how people can let their thoughts take them captive. Fortunately, there are ways to take back control, but you need to be willing to interrogate your thoughts.
Ask yourself...
To what end are your thoughts adding productive value to your life?
How is your external environment contributing to negative thought patterns?
How can I appreciate more of the things that bring joy to my life instead of emphasizing what you lack?
Answers to these questions allow you to level-up your mindset by taking your thoughts captive so you can achieve peak performance in all areas of your life.

It is important to acknowledge that it can be detrimental to relationships when we find ourselves in our own drama or the drama of others. And if you find yourself experiencing a great deal of drama with little-to-no resolution, you’re probably stuck in The Drama Triangle, which is a social model of human interaction.
This model describes the connection between personal responsibility and power in conflicts and the shifting, and potentially destructive, roles people play. These roles include “The Persecutor/Villain,” “The Rescuer/Hero,” and “The Victim” and how playing one or more of these roles can prove unhelpful in navigating difficult situations or conflicts.
Fortunately, there are ways to level-up your mindset to bring about better, more helpful outcomes with your significant other, your friends, and at work. It’s time to get unstuck.

I recently had the privilege of being a guest on the Beyond the Rut Podcast, hosted by Jerry Dugan. During the conversation, we discussed...
Being motivated by external validation is a common issue in the modern world. It is normal for us to seek acceptance and love from those around us during our childhood, teens, and young adulthood. However, as we enter into middle age, it is essential that we strive to attain our own internal validation. This can be done by engaging in activities for the sake of doing them, regardless of anyone else’s opinion.
The key here is to focus on doing things well and being able to be proud of our efforts, not just relying on recognition from others By making this shift in mindset and outlook, we can free ourselves from doubts and self-doubt for good.

When we think of fitness, most people think of “physical fitness.” We all know that eating right, engaging in regular physical activity, getting enough sleep, and managing stress are important. The health and quality of your relationships, however, are, arguably, equally as important. This relates to the idea of “social fitness,” which relates to how we build and optimize our relationships and interactions with others. This is especially relevant with the ongoing mental health crisis, particularly with teenagers. Whether it has to do with the pervasiveness of smartphones or the 2020 lockdown, enhancing your social fitness “muscles” is extraordinarily important to leveling-up your mindset to achieve peak performance both in relationships and the daily tasks you perform. This episode discusses practical ways of doing just that. THANK YOU for joining the conversation!

Learned helplessness is a state of mind where someone believes that they are unable to active effectively, especially when it comes to avoiding negative outcomes. It is inherently problematic and can lead to a host of mental and physical issues, such as depression, loss of interest in life, and feelings of worthlessness. Fortunately, there is hope, as identifying things within a person's control and focusing on those things rather than those things outside of their control helps reduce and, potentially, overcome learned helplessness in addition to other techniques and approaches. Moving beyond such a condition, however, isn't as simple as "dusting yourself off," as it is much more layered a nuanced than that and it requires others show grace and love and to be a beacon of light. One of the greatest gifts in life is the ability for each of us to choose how we live our life. This is not to suggest that we pick our starting point, which is to say that some people are born into abject poverty while others are born into wealth and privilege...or...some people are victims of abuse while others grow up free from abuse. Objectively speaking, however, we can choose how we live our life or, at least, how we think about living our life and this episode explores 7 ways that explain what "Being on Purpose" in life means and how living "on purpose" can bring about a more joyful and fulfilling life. And once we figure out how to do that, we level-up our mindset and engage in new and different actions that allow us to pull our ideal future into the present. Enjoy! Many of us may associate vulnerability with feelings of uncertainty, shame, fear, or weakness. While vulnerability 2023 is still related to weakness in the minds of many, it is actually a deeply important part of the human experience and learning to display vulnerability can bring with it greater joy, love, and authenticity in our lives. In relationships, displaying vulnerability builds empathy, which helps us understand the perspectives, needs, and intentions of others. In leadership, displaying vulnerability makes us more relatable (and likable) to those that follow us. In life, displaying vulnerability is the courage to be yourself, which should be perceived as a strength, not a weakness. Doing so allows you to level-up your mindset to achieve peak performance in your relationships with others and there is little-to-no downside to that. THANK YOU for joining the conversation!

We all know that in order to achieve peak performance, we need to be physically, emotionally, and psychologically healthy. One type of health that often gets overlooked is spiritual health and it is next to impossible to maintain our overall health and well-being if one (or more) is out of whack. With regard to spiritual health, every spiritual journey, whether you are believer in the God of any religion or you are an atheist, has its share of ups and downs. During the "ups," we feel like we can conquer anything because we are filled with inspiration. During the "downs," however, when things reach their lowest point, we experience spiritual crisis known as "The Dark Night of the Soul." In effect, this experience is a form of spiritual depression* and, to navigate it successfully, we need to progress through 6 stages whereby we upgrade our life from low-resolution to high-resolution, which allows us to level-up our mindset to achieve peak performance. From the time we wake up in the morning to the time we go to sleep at night, we make decisions. Research suggests that each of us makes ~35,000 decisions every day, most of which are habituated decisions that don't require a lot of mental effort or overload our brains. This is a good thing, as most of these decisions are inconsequential in the grand scheme of our day or our lives. They do, however, drain our mental energy to a degree and, when coupled with having to make decisions of consequence, can lead to "decision fatigue." The result of decision fatigue can lead to feeling tired, having brain fog, and a whole host of physical symptoms, such as headaches or an upset stomach. To combat decision fatigue, the goal is to habituate inconsequential decisions in favor of making fewer decisions of consequence. Doing so will level-up your mindset to achieve peak performance. We've all had days where we feel "blah." Those are the days where we don't feel like doing anything and it's a normal part of life. While waning motivation can be a signal of depression in extreme cases, the ebbing and flowing nature of motivation is tied to something more straightforward: Mindset. Since this podcast is dedicated to helping you level-up your mindset to achieve peak performance, addressing the nature of motivation is appropriate, especially during times when you feel less driven or motivated. From an early age, we learn about cause-and-effect relationships and, to keep things simple in our minds, we like to point to singular causes and singular effects. More often than not, however, there are multiple causes that have multiple effects. Imagine what life would be like if you made a decision right now to shift the causes that can bring about new and different effects, such as shifting habitual thought patterns or making changes to your environment. The ability to take responsibility to new and different ways of being is nearly endless and brings about different effects because you changed the causes. And knowing that each of us is responsible for the effects, or outcomes, in our lives, we get to choose the causes and this episode unpacks ways to level-up our mindset to realize better effects and to achieve peak performance. You've probably heard the adage: There are two constants in life: death and taxes. While death and taxes are, in fact, constants, time is another one because time is fixed. We all get the same 86,400 seconds, 1,440 minutes, and 24 hours each day. What isn't fixed, however, is how much energy we have from minute-to-minute, day-to-day, which is why an alternative way of being able to achieve peak performance is for each of us to do a better job managing our energy rather than managing our time. A starting point is to identify how much time per day we can perform at our peak by being highly energized and laser focused. From there, we can define how many things we can do excellently and make sure to do the most important things first. And we also need to engage in habits that promote energy or, at least, help us reboot and recharge. Each of these points, and much more, are outlined in this episode. Have you heard of the "Both/And" approach to thinking, making decisions, and solving problems? Until recently, I hadn't and learning about this way of thinking has help me level-up my mindset and perform better in life and in business. You see, in Western cultures, we are socialized into rational, dualistic thinking patterns, which is about comparison and differentiation. Essentially, it's "either-or" thinking. While either-or thinking has led to incalculable advances in science, technology, and medicine, dualistic thinking isn't the only way to interpret the world and doing so can allows us to be myopic in our approach to life and decision-making. By contrast, ancient traditions, such as Buddhism or Taoism, emphasizes the non-dual mind thereby transcending either-or thinking or a fixed mindset. Take a listen and give Both/And thinking a try. You'll be glad you did. Thank you for joining the conversation!

Have you ever wondered why some people are champions and others aren't? Have you ever wondered why some people excel in business and others don't? Have you ever wondered why some people are able to level-up their mindset every day and others struggle? The differences are fractional, which is to say that they are very small or slight. Those that achieve peak performance are fractionally better every day than those who don't achieve sustained success, with the former employing a crawl, walk, run approach to how they go about engaging in work, activities, or new things. These people know they aren't going to be good at things right at the start, but they don't let it stop them because they possess a positive attitude and this compounds over time. Ultimately, being fractionally better every day requires working the crawl, walk, run process in light of the accompanying frustration and adversity. Thank you for joining the conversation!

How much time per day do you spend on your smartphone? What types of food are in your refrigerator or pantry? Do you have toxic people in your life? These are a few examples of the "environmental threats" that either serve to distract or inhibit our ability to achieve peak performance. And while there are many others, these three serve as common, everyday threats that, when not dealt with appropriately, can lead to a whole host of damaging consequences, such as mood and sleep disorders, overweight and obesity, and feeling beatdown and defeated. By managing each more effectively, however, you can enhance your performance simply by reducing the degrees of "bad." Doing so starts to level-up up your mindset and sets the stage for achieving peak performance. Thank you for joining the conversation!

When we think of peak performers, it's not a stretch to assert that Yoda isn't the first person or character that comes to mind. It turns out, however, that not only was Yoda wise, but he was also the epitome of a peak performer as a Jedi Master. He not only possessed the ability to perform at a high level, but he also had the ability to translate his knowledge and wisdom to others in his teachings. When considering what he taught, each of us needs to reflect on those things that we need to unlearn, those things that we are willing to commit to deeply, the parts of our lives we can do a better job controlling, leveling-up our mindset to emphasize abundance rather than lack, and making a commitment to doing rather than simply trying. What is the meaning OF life? I have no idea, but what I do know is that there are ways to create greater meaning IN life. The key tenets to finding more significant meaning in life relates to coherence, purpose, and significance. Coherence allows us to make sense of our lives either in the moment or after the fact. Purpose relates to having goals or aims that ground us in our "reason for being." Significance asserts that our lives matter because, without our existence, the world would be worse off. Without meaning, and without living by our values and virtues, the world is a lesser place. But being able to show up in the world because our lives have more meaning, allows for the world to be a better place. It allows us to find awe in our lives every day and everywhere. What brings meaning to your life? Once you know, chase after it and hold it tight. Thank you for joining the conversation!

People fear what they don't know, and they hate what they are afraid of. This relates to (most) people's dislike or intolerance to uncertainty. When people feel uncertain, they experience anxiety. Uncertainty + anxiety = fear. And all of us know that fear is a powerful emotion (some may argue that it's even more powerful than love) because fear keeps us safe from real or imagine threats. When we feel threatened, particular in the face of being disconnected from others, we guard our fears in a variety of ways, such as through resistance, anger, avoidance, and the like. The question is: Is guarding our fear helpful to our lives? Perhaps, but, in most cases, there are more effective ways to cope. Thank you for joining the conversation!

Each of us likes to believe we think for ourselves, but do we? As children, the adults in our life, such as our parents, teachers, and coaches, download their worldview and beliefs and we, generally, accept that as truth. These truths form our beliefs. While this isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, at some point when we become adults, we realize that we've been living by other people's beliefs. Still further, there are sources of information, such as the mainstream media or other experts or authorities that attempt to imprint their worldview or beliefs on us. Throughout history, psychologists, neuroscientists, and philosophers have tried to understand humor, which is to say: Why we laugh. Interestingly, humor was once framed negatively, and it was viewed as a way for people to be demeaning or disparaging of others as a way to demonstrate superiority or vulgarity. In effect, humor was considered undesirable behavior and something to be avoided. Fortunately, research evolves and advances, and with the development of the field of positive psychology, humor helps people develop greater emotional well-being and optimism. And while no one knows definitively why we laugh, the physical, mental, and social health benefits are striking and learning about them should lead us to seek out moments to laugh every day. Let's see if it works... "Singing in the shower is fun until you get soap in your mouth. Then, it's a soap opera." (hehe). Thank you for joining the conversation!

It's no accident high performers consistently achieve exemplary results. Fundamentally, all high performers possess a similar understanding about what is needed to consistently excel. They know that being emotionally committed to engaging in meaningful work, having the ability to leveraging their strengths, possessing a strong work ethic, building strong relationships with others, and having advanced self-leadership abilities are essential factors that contribute to their success. High performers also live by specific habits that move them closer to meeting or exceeding their goals. This episode explores 10 habits high performers create for themselves, which allow them to take control of their lives while leaving nothing to chance. Is the current story about yourself serving you? And is this the story you want to tell? The answer to the first question is "yes," if for no other reason that if it wasn't, you'd tell a different story. The answer to the second question is less obvious. If you're achieving a measure of satisfaction or attention, it's obvious that's the story you want to tell, but you will lack fulfillment because fulfillment cannot exist in the midst of dysfunction. It is a mindset of lack, which will never lead you to the life you want. It's a mindset that will perpetuate pain and misery. But if you want to live a life of gain or abundance, the starting point is to look at your histories with gratitude, to look on the pain or trauma with compassion knowing that it's shaped you into the person you've become. Doing so allows you to begin crafting new stories around the progress you're making toward your goals versus constantly judging yourself negatively for what's missing. Our inner voice (aka "The voice inside our head") is caused by certain brain mechanisms that cause us to talk to ourselves without speaking or hearing words. It's a form of intrapersonal communication ("within") where a person acts as both the sender and receiver of messages to engage in "self-talk." Such self-talk can be both positive and negative. On one hand, it can be uplifting and supportive. On the other, it can be negative and self-defeating. And if the foundation of all of our relationships is "the conversation," how we talk to ourselves, ultimately, affects the relationship we have with ourselves. The cool thing is that we can choose how we talk to ourselves moment-to-moment, day-to-day. The question is: Do you want better for yourself? If so, change the conversation you're having with yourself. This episode explores strategies on how to do that more effectively. Thank you for joining the conversation!

When most people want to lose weight or eat healthier, they turn to any one of the 30k fad diets listed with the Food and Drug Administration. While each of them works, principally because they are calorically restrictive, there is a lot of confusion around diets. This episode seeks to demystify six (6) of the most popular diet protocols to allow you to make smarter, more informed decisions should you be considering starting a diet. In this small survey, we examine diets, such as The Keto Diet, The Macro Diet, Plant-Based Diets, Intermittent Fasting, and more...and we even discuss the role of alcohol. The information presented in this episode is for informational purposes only. Be sure to consult your physician prior to starting any nutrition or fitness regimen. We don't like to believe for ourselves that we behave in hypocritical ways. We like to believe for ourselves that we can and do live by a set or moral principles or standards and that we never violate them. Unfortunately, such a belief is misguided, as we all engage in behavior that is inconsistent with what we claim. Let's face it, living by an absolute set of moral standards is next to impossible to do and rather than do that, we engage in hypocrisy, if for no other reason that it is simply easier to do. Can we stop being hypocritical? Probably not. Can we become less hypocritical? Probably. This episode explores the roots of hypocrisy, how we can become less hypocritical, and more. Think back to a time when someone you cared about hurt you. Think back to a time when you hurt someone you cared about. It goes without saying that both scenarios have happened to all of us. Were you able to forgive them and let go? Were they able to forgive you and let go? Forgiveness is more complicated than people think for a variety of reasons because when we get hurt or feel wronged, we likely experience anger, bitterness, and resentment. The question is whether those feelings provide any long-term benefit to our lives and relationships. This episode explores the benefits and downsides of forgiveness and letting go as well as the benefits and downsides of not forgiving and letting go. Thank you for joining the conversation!

Most people like to think that they make sound decisions. Not so fast! Our judgment and decision making are clouded by many factors, such as emotions, motivation, and/or limitations in our ability to process information. Because of this, we often engage in cognitive biases, which are errors in thinking when we process information in the world around us in the brain's pursuit of simplifying information. And while such biases (or "heuristics") are quite accurate, they can get us into trouble or lead us to miss out on opportunities to make our lives better. Fortunately, through deliberate practice, we can minimize the errors and begin thinking more clearly. Thank you for joining the conversation!

My journey with starting a podcast started a few years ago...although I didn't know it at the time. Seeds were planted and, eventually, I received a final spark of inspiration and haven't look back. In fact, starting a podcast is extremely easy and gratifying. We all know someone who spends way too much time bragging about their successes or their physical appearance, provoking a reaction in another person by making calculated comments that are inappropriate, and/or catastrophizing the details of their own lives or the lives of others. People that engage in this type of attention seeking behavior have their behavior reinforced whenever they are given attention, whether positive or negative. In extreme cases, psychiatric conditions or mental illness serves as the driver of attention seeking behavior and these cases should be referred to a mental health professional. Aside from mental illness, there are ways to cope with this and to help attention seekers pursue alternative courses of action that bring about what they claim they want in the first place: attention. Author of the bestselling book, Conversations with God, Neale Donald Walsch was once quoted as saying, "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone." No truer words have been spoken. Human beings perpetually seek comfort, which is not necessarily a bad thing until it becomes a bad thing. Achieving comforts in life, while nice and convenient, can lead to a type of self-reinforcing behavior that keeps us "stuck" in those comforts, which can devolve into complacency and, thus, further devolving into a loss of purpose, poor physical health, and depression. The antithesis of this, of course, is to live life on a quest to achieve excellence in every pursuit, especially during times of waning motivation, adversity, and pain. Thank you listening and THANK YOU for joining the conversation!

Human motivation is multifaceted and multilayered. That is obvious. What is less obvious are the reasons why. One primary reason is the idea of self-reinforcing behavior, which is the process by which people control their own behavior by rewarding themselves when they achieve a certain standard or meet or exceed a goal. This reward is born out of the desire to maximize real or perceived "payoffs" and minimize real or perceived "costs." In romantic relationships, people constantly evaluate the "cost-to-benefit" ratio of the relationship. This informs them as to whether they choose to stay or leave. This episode takes a closer look at this relational dynamic and how it fits within the context of self-reinforcing behavior. Enjoy...and THANK YOU for joining the conversation!

David Hollenbach's story is one of heroism and tragedy. He knows what it's like to save lives and help others through unimaginable struggle and also knows the pain that comes with not being able to save everyone. As a veteran of the United States Navy, and having served 23 years in the fire service holding numerous leadership positions, David is the definition of what it means to be a hero and knows that there is a cost to such heroism. As a sufferer of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and despite the adversity, David found a way to channel his experience and passion for helping others through becoming a motivational speaker, coach, mentor, and international best-selling author. How open minded are you? Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10. If you're like most people, the rating will be fairly high. After all, who wants to consider themselves or be considered closed-minded. This is a fascinating perspective with regard to the echo chambers in which we live our lives, particularly when we take an honest look at why it is so challenging to spend time in the discomfort of alternate thoughts, ideas, and beliefs. Ironically, it is the ability and willingness to sit in the discomfort that allows us to "round out" our perspectives even without having to adopt or advocating for the differences. And moving outside of our respective echo chambers allows us, at least in part, to expand our views and enhance our lives. Thank you for joining the conversation!

We all put things off. Does that mean we are procrastinators? Not necessarily. Technically speaking, procrastination is the CHRONIC avoidance of unpleasant tasks and/or the active pursuit of distractions that are more enjoyable than the tasks we must complete. As with anything, procrastination takes various forms and has psychological roots grounded in low self-confidence, anxiety, and/or a lack of structure. And despite the reality that there may be short-term benefit - in the form of emotional protection - habitual procrastination brings a whole host of physical, emotional, and practical costs. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome and beat procrastination. It's been said that where your eyes go, you go. Whether you are a driver, motorcyclist, bike rider, skier, or the like, our vehicles and our bodies go where our eyes are focused. And where our attention and focus goes, so goes our energy, which can go one of two ways: 1) paying attention to and focusing on the negative leads to negative energy; or 2) paying attention to and focusing on the positive leads to, more often than not, positive energy and, ultimately, better outcomes in life. We all can shift our attention, focus, and energy by reassessing our beliefs, learning how our brains work (neuroplasticity), and "rewiring" our brains to bring about more, to bring about better. Doing so will bring each of us closer to the loving energy of God, Source, the Universe, or whatever you want to call it, and it will bring about transformative, rewarding experiences in your life...and there is no downside! Think about a time when you thought you "arrived." This could be a significant event or achievement, such as graduating high school or college, getting a job or promotion, or getting married. What you likely realized shortly after accomplishing each of those goals is that there was something next. And while there are "arrivals," there is no such thing at "arriving," and in order to prepare yourself to achieve the next thing, you must build a strong psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual foundation that must be tended to continuously. In effect, our lives are "under construction" constantly because our lives are "unfinished." There is always something else to strive for, something else to excel at, more to try to perfect even though perfection is elusive. Doing so is the start or continuation of doing more to live out our purpose. Thank you for joining the conversation!

It's been said that we all must suffer one of two pains in life: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The former can lead to a life filled with joy and fulfillment while the latter leads to a long-lasting pain that is difficult to release. As with anything, we have a choice. We can choose to live more intentionally and with greater discipline despite the fact that it isn't "sexy" to do so. Or we can live a life where we regret decisions made or actions taken or, perhaps worse, we can live a life in a perpetual state of "what if." Doesn't seem like much of a choice, does it? One of the most common forms of psychological and emotional manipulation in relationships are guilt trips. For people on the receiving end o f a guilt trip, once it dawns on them that they are being manipulated it can lead to anger and resentment, which ultimately damages the relationships. For the guilt inducers, or "guilt trippers," they engage in that type of manipulation to get what they want, and this is, very often, driven by stealth anger or resentment that has been buried or repressed. There are better ways to go about getting what you want without causing irreparable damage to the relationships you claim to value most. Find out how in the latest episode of The Quest4Life Podcast. The psychology of decision-making is fascinating, especially when we consider what motivates us. When making consequential decisions, most people tend to focus on the potential loss or what they stand to lose rather than emphasizing the potential gain.
