Today is the winter solstice. The sun couldn’t be any further away. But the good thing is the days will only getlonger from now on and summer will be here before we know it! It is also the traditional day for plantingonions.

Today is the eve of the winter solstice and it show. It is cold and the day seemed to disappear quite early in the afternoon. It was hard to get going and hard to keep going – so we went garden shopping, which resulted in a slightly dramatic happening.

Sometimes computer gardening keeps me out of the garden, but it stays in my head. Having said that I have been in there today and have made great progress. There are also some delicious things coming out of the garden for dinner tonight – yummo!

You gotta love a good rainbow and today we had an amazing one caught on camera. I also started the process of marking out the new garden room and then moved on down into the edible section for some deep maintenance.

I’m not a great one for following instructions but I’vedecided to attempt to align myself to garden design principles for this new garden room – well as closely as I will allow myself without compromising my creativity. So this time I’m all about the site survey with surprising results.

Yesterday was a holiday for the King – not that I wascompletely without work, but when your work is your passion – technically it’s not work!… And today I have ramped up my heavily maintenance so I can have more free time later. It is so encouraging to make great progress.

If I thought last time was a bit rainy and annoying weatherwise… my goodness me… the last day or so has been horrendous. The weather has whipped up a storm of epic proportions. Things should be a bit more settled going forward, so I have no excuse not to give the garden some much needed love.

Intermittent rain has prevented any outdoor gardeninggoodness today, so I’ve taken a road trip with Hubby the Un-Gardener to the townthat hosts my favourite garden of all time. Sadly we won’t be visiting it this time… maybe next time.

Today was largely spent weeding up in The Palace. Room Two is mostly natives and is doing well for its age. Please forgive me for my terrible pronunciation of some of the Latin names, but to be fair all of the original Latin speakers are dead so who really knows how things were pronounced.

I have whipped up my great big list of big jobs that oncedone will make my life easier and now it is a case of working through it and inthe end having a garden that is a lot lower maintenance.

Today is the first day of autumn if you go by the calendar. I took the new season by the horns and removeda tired crop… my watermelons and replaced it with a mustard cover crop.

This chit chat is all about trimming my rosemary hedges. I was told when I first got here that the only thing I’d be able to grow is rosemary, to which I replied ‘watch me.’ But they were right – rosemary does indeed grow really well here.

I’m quite knackered. I have whipped up an enormous list of absolutely all things for the garden. Some are needs, some are wants and some are could's and should's. Yesterday was a holiday, so I took it.

Today I tackled the overgrown chamomile in The Thankful Garden. It is all very well to create a garden, but in the long term you need to maintain it so it stays beautiful.

When you spend months growing food in the garden, it doesn't do it justice to just gobble it down. It needs to be celebrated in the kitchen and honoured in the meal.
However I'm not all that great a cook so my efforts to honour my cabbage harvest went a little awry.

Today is a special day. On this day 18 Jan in 2018 we move here to our then empty 10 acre property beside the sea on the wild west coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
We began rebuilding our lives here - it hasn't been without its challenge, but it is very much the place we call home.

Today is super soggy so I'm pretty much forced to stay indoors where I've done my Monday 'Computer Gardening'.
I did put on my red rain coat and ventured out into the garden to find out why my weather station wasn't recording the rain.
Any yesterday we had a surprise visitor in the garden - well it took me by surprise that's for sure.

This is podcast #4 and it seems to be coming along nicely. I think I'm getting the hang of editing so it didn't matter too much when I stuffed up a sentence here and there, and when the very noisy airplane flew overhead - I just chopped them out.
Now that I'm feeling a bit more confident with the recording, I should probably say a bit about me. I'm a gardener on the wild West Coast of New Zealand and have been blogging about growing veggies for almost a decade. In 2019 we moved a house onto a 10 acre coastal property and I continue to share all the gardening things going on as we settle into the land beside the sea.
