House of Hesed: Recent Episodes

Wesley LoGiudice

Hesed is a Hebrew word for love, which we have no adequate translation for, it is loyal, steadfast, kind, unconditional love, it is the love which God graciously shows His children. Join us as we nerd out about the Bible and theology, as well as explore how we can all build a house of hesed in our communities and in our individual relationships with God.

The following is a reading from some bonus chapters of my book, The Shepherd King Breath of The Spirit. My good friend Michael James Brown did the voice acting for these chapters but we only recorded the audio and unfortunately did not have any video to go with these readings. I will be releasing the rest of these chapters in the near future, probably on Halloween, so be on the look out for that soon! On the final installment of this miniseries Michael will be reading through the last chapter of my short story, Haunted By God. As I mentioned in the show notes for the previous episodes, this short story is based off of 1st Samuel chapters 4-6. This story can be found as bonus chapters in "The Shepherd King". If you are just now tuning in I would recommend starting with episode 5, which is the beginning of this short story. Otherwise you may, no you will be pretty lost.

For more info on The Shepherd King you can to wesleylogiudice.com and to purchase the book you can go to amazon.

First of all, I do apologize for the late podcast, I don't really have an excuse, I was just behind on the editing for this week. As you may have guessed we are continuing through the short horror story "Haunted By God". Michael James Brown reads through the next two chapters of this story. For some context this story is based off of 1st Samuel 4. This story is originally found as bonus chapters in Wesley's new book, "The Shepherd King". As I mentioned last week this book does not have anything to do with the main plot points of The Shepherd King, but it is a part of the same universe of the main story line. If you haven't listened to last week's podcast, which is a reading of the first chapter of this story, than I highly recommend going back and listening to that episode first.

You can purchase "The Shepherd King" on Amazon, and if you'd like to learn more about the book you can go to wesleylogiudice.com

I have used again the "sound" of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB for short) of the Universe, and the "sound" of a Black Hole from the Perseus galaxy. See the show notes of the previous episode, episode 5 for more info on these sounds.

This week on the House of Hesed Podcast Michael James Brown reads from a short horror story that is included in Wesley's book, "The Shepherd King". This story is called "Haunted By God" and is based off of 1st Samuel 4-6. This story is in the form of bonus chapters at the end of Wesley's book, so it does not have anything to do with the main plot points of the book. "The Shepherd King" is more of a fantasy adventure whereas this short story is more of a horror fiction.

You can purchase "The Shepherd King" on Amazon, and if you'd like to learn more about the book you can go to wesley.logiudice.com

The ominous music that is in Yashane's dream with Dagon and the Ark is a splicing together of some sounds from space that NASA has released. NASA took the wavelength of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) of the universe that is believed to be radiation left over from the big bang and converted it into sound waves. They have also done a similar but different process where they used the gas surrounding a black hole in the Perseus galaxy and did some editing magic to create the "sound" of a blackhole. I got my degree in Chemistry not Physics, so if I am off on the explanations of any of this stuff, I apologize in advance, also feel free to reach out and correct me on it.

In this scene of Shane's dream, he is in the presence and throne room of Yahweh and I've used these sounds to represent Yahweh's characteristics. Let me explain, in the Bible, Yahweh's name denotes what kind of God He is, many people will translate the name "Yahweh" as "I am who I am". So He is the God of "being", "existence", and really "everything". It is only fitting, then, to use sound that was generated from the background radiation (CMB) of our universe, which is, to my knowledge, microwaves that permeate the entirety of space and existence as we know it.

I used the black hole sound because Yahweh's presence is somehow above (Exodus 25:17-22) and (as I have written it) inside of the shadow underneath the cherubim's wings. It's like this shadow houses Yahweh's very presence (which is infinite) and becomes a "blackhole" of sorts. Additionally, a black hole is something that is dangerous, infinitely dense, and unseeable; character traits which are shared by Yahweh and which I thought were apt to emphasize in this scene.

This week Wes and David talk about the Bible's oldest poem, otherwise known as the song of Deborah. Inside this poem there's some trash talk between the tribes of Israel, some really old, nerdy poetry, and yes, yo mama jokes. Amidst all of these eclectic and seemingly random lines of poetry however, there seems to emerge a message about where God's people position themselves when the battle comes knocking, as well as what God does to His people's enemies.

In this Episode Wes and David talk about the only female Judge in the book of Judges, Deborah and the other Judge during her time Barak, or as Wes likes to call them "The Queen Bee and Lightning". We talk about separating out some of the debates and discussion over women's roles in our current religious landscape in order to uncover the original intent and meaning of this story.

It should be noted that early on in this conversation Wes mentions that Deborah clearly seems to be the one in charge and the Judge, however in later references to this story (1 Samuel 12:11 and Hebrews 11:32) Deborah is excluded from a list of Judges, while Barak is included. I think this should tell us, that at least the author to the Hebrews read this story and concluded that Barak, not Deborah was the Judge in this story. Additionally, when counting the Judges, you have to exclude either Deborah or Barak in order for the total count to add up to 12.

If you google "list of the Judges in the Bible" today, or at least when I did (the algorithm could be different for different people or if you use a different search engine), I got a list that included Deborah but excluded Barak. I think this is important because, again, the person who penned Hebrews seems to have read this story and concluded that the man, not the woman was the Judge of this story. When reading the Bible I think clues to whether or not you are interpreting it correctly can be found in how Jesus and the Apostles interpreted certain passages.

So does that mean that Wes is wrong in saying that Deborah was clearly the one in charge and the Judge here? Well, yes. Deborah is a judge, but we must remember that the term "Shofet" in Hebrew can denote either a Judicial role or a Charismatic leader or Cheiftan. Deborah is a judge in the sense of how we understand the English word "Judge". However, I do agree with the author to the Hebrews that Barak, not Deborah should be counted as the Judge or the "Sherif" in this story.

In other words if you are to say something about women's roles in the Bible when referencing this story I believe that Deborah's place in the story as a Judiciary for Israel and a Prophet-Woman are most likely understood to be placed, included and even emphasized in this story not to show that women can be in leadership positions (though I can understand that conclusion) but rather to highlight the tension between the seed of the snake, and the seed of the women. To simplify this, I believe that Deborah and Jael's prominent roles in this story are primarily thematic in nature, to show us the theme of the tension between a woman and the snake, as opposed to promoting women being in positions of leadership.

Okay that was a lot! You should also google images of "Mount Tabor" as it is really cool and helps one to visualize this epic battle!

In this episode Wes and David chat about the 2nd Judge, and the first Assasin in the Bible "Ehud the Unifier". We start out talking about the Judge before Ehud, Othniel the Lion of God and his arch nemesis with a mouthful of a name "Cushan Rishathaim King of Aram Naharaim".

Then we move onto Ehud and spend a majority of the episode exploring what was going through Ehud's head when he planned, hesitated and then carried out this Assassination. This assassination centers around two very famous places in Israel, Jericho and Gilgal. Gilgal was a place that was akin to the Statue of Liberty for the Israelites.

Gilgal was the first place Israel made camp when they entered into the promised land in the conquest under Joshua. It was also the place where Israel all marked themselves as a people of God with the rite of circumcision, and there was a national monument built there, made up of 12 stones, each one from picked up from the bottom of the Jordan river by someone from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. Gilgal means "circle" or "wheel" because this monument was the place where God rolled Israel's shame away and gave them a new identity when they entered the promised land.

No longer would they be known as an enslaved people group, nor would they be desert nomads, now they would have a land of their own, given to them by their God. So what are those idols doing at this national monument? That is the central pivot point for this story and where are conversation today centers around.

One handed assassins, the queen bee of Israel, the legendary stone slingers of Benjamin, the strongest man this side of the Jordan, and the outlaw turned sheriff of Israel. In this first episode of the House of Hesed Podcast David and Wes introduce Judges as the Wild West of the Bible, we start out talking about the word "Shofet" and why "Sherrif" is a good translation, then we give an overview of the book.

Next we talk about Adonai Bezek! One of Wes' favorite bible characters and how he foreshadows what the rest of the book will be about. Lastly we talk about the "Cainites" and their bizarre family lineage from both the line of Cain and the line of Jethro, Moses' father in law.
